Ceiling in My Room.......2007-04-16

$6.99 is a lot to pay for one song, but Monkees' fans will find "Ceiling in My Room", co-written by Davy Jones, well worth the effort. This track was never included on any Monkees' disc (it was done around the time of BIRDS...BEES...MONKEES), but it certainly should have been. The song is a mournful tune about the pitfalls of fame and success. A very penetrating eye-opener that Rhino should have included on MUSIC BOX rather than hide away on this obsecure release.

Note: The song ("Ceiling in My Room") deserves 5/5 stars, but I gave it a 4/5 because this is an inferior compilation overall.

Decent sampler, but substitutes some oddities for hits.......2004-08-05

This is an odd hits collection, made stranger by the fact that you probably won't find it in a record store, but in a cut-out bin at a supermarket or drugstore. Still, it's certainly worth the few bucks it costs, and just might get you interested enough to seek out some of The Monkees' other work.

Monkees staples like "I'm A Believer" and "(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone" are to be found, but it lacks other well-known tracks such as "Theme From The Monkees", "Last Train To Clarksville", "Pleasant Valley Sunday" or "Daydream Believer".

However, it does include "Listen To The Band", one of the finest songs the Monkees ever recorded, as well as "Ceiling In My Room", which is still available only on this very cd to this day, unless I am mistaken. "Shades Of Gray" is another underappreciated gem included here, featuring some of Jones and Tork's greatest vocal work with the band. Also included is the Nesmith-penned and Dolenz-sung "The Girl I Knew Somewhere", which I have always liked.

I don't understand why "Heart And Soul" was included, though, from the Monkees 1986 "Pool It!" album, and I could have done without "Cuddly Toy", considering that "Pleasant Valley Sunday" would have been a much better inclusion from the original album "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones, Ltd.". Overall, it's a good bargain disc if you manage to find it somewhere. I guess it's not such a big deal that the theme song wasn't included, but dropping some of the weaker entries for hits would have been nice. Of course, that probably would have elevated it beyond cut-out bin status and upped the price.

OK not the best.......2000-07-10

The CD,it only has a few good songs like "I'm a Believer","Heart and Soul","Listen To The Band",and "(I'm Not Your)Steppin Stone,besides that its all down hill.A couple of songs on it were made after Peter left."Ceiling In My Room" really brings it down.

Here They Come.............2000-06-21

Well, even if that song isn't included, this is still a pretty good album. My favorites are Daydream Believer (of course!) and Ceiling in My Room. Who cares if they don't play their own instruments? They still make great music.

The Tradition Continues.......2003-11-17

This group of young guys have got it all together in perpetuating the wonderful tradition of the Boys From Indiana, one of the finest traditional bluegrass bands that ever played. The penmanship of most of the material wouldn't let it be any other way, the Holts are solid and better bluegrass songs were never written. If you like your bluegrass traditional in this day of a lot of progressive and other slants on bluegrass this is an album to buy, and I know you'll want to get all of their current material. Old Boys From Indiana material is extinct but this fills the bill real well and bring back fond memories of them.

Solid, but not stunning.......2002-12-05

My first exposure to the Wildwoods was their 2002 album, "Back Country Road," which is simply stunning. I was surprised to find you that this earlier album is merely an okay-sounding bluegrass gospel set, with some really nice harmonies, but kind of muted, low-key picking backing them up. Not as much spark and fire on this album, although it's still very good and very solid. Worth checking out, though their next album will blow your mind!

Super Bluegrass Gospel.......2001-04-07

I recently saw the Wildwood valley Boys in person and was really impressed with their music.Their blend of playing with Tony Holt's voice is fantastic. Most of the songs on this CD are written by the Holt family and there is not a bad song in the bunch. One song just seems to blend right into the next one. If you like good ole traditional bluegrass gospel music then this CD is a must for you. As the title says, I'm A Believer in the Wildwood Valley Boys.
