Grave Disorder

The Damned are back and--thank hell--all their faculties are intact. These superannuated punks have ceaselessly provided live music for Britain's gnarly pallbearers to pogo to, but Grave Disorder is only their fourth studio album in 16 years (and the first to feature bereted loon-ball Captain Sensible since 1982). Rat Scabies has been replaced by ex-English Dogs tub-thumper Pinch, while Dave Vanian remains at the vocal helm. Vanian even gets to sing a manly voiced love song to missus and bassist Patricia Morrison (Sisters of Mercy), which humorously robs Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" of a few chords. Vanian is at the top of his game: "Absinthe," his tribute to the hallucinogenic dishwashing liquid of turn-of-the-century Paris, is a wonder; "Amen," a grimly insurgent anti-religion rocker with clanging church bell samples, is hilarious; and the Andrew Lloyd Webber treatment on the brilliant "Beauty of the Beast" (Vanian's tribute to the flesh-crawling artfulness of the vintage black and white horror flick) only makes you mad that the Damned never got around to doing a gothic version of Phantom of the Opera in their 1980s heyday. Even so, this album is neat, neat, neat all the way and perhaps the finest album the Damned have ever made. --Kevin Maidment --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.
Album Description
Grave Disorder is the brand new release from the legendary band The Damned. The new material was written between March and May of 2000, produced by Grammy award winner David Bianco (Tom Petty, Teenage Fan Club, Del Amitri, Rollins Band, Buffalo Tom, and Afghan Whigs) and marks the first time that David Vanian and Captain Sensible have collaborated since Frankie Goes to Hollywood was polluting our airwaves. Rumors spread like wildfire that these sessions delivered some of the strongest new material from The Damned since Strawberries was released back in 1982. Grave Disorder was The Damned's Nitro records debut comes packaged in a Digipak with 13 Damned tracks. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

One of the top 3 best damned albums.......2006-01-13
my favorite damned albums are machine gun etiquette of course, the often overlooked black album, the phenomenal strawberries, and as surprising as it will sound the latest damned album "grave disorder" which im reviewing right here...democracy? is a rahter weak start compared to the past albums, but still a good song, the rest of the album picks up the pace and slows down for a haunting end. picture phantasmagoria with less keyboards and done better. not to mention it can be humorous at times as well...the song "w" proves that..."lookin for action" makes me laugh sometimes as well...the best two songs in my opinion that make this album a must to damned fans are "thrill kill" and "would you be so hot if you weren't dead?"...trust me when i say that the british still have what it takes to be punk in this new millenia. with the growing number of sellouts and punk bands in the US that are still around from this dayand age, they all sound old and gray compared to this(well maybe TSOL is an exception)...yeah the UK still has Adicts, GBH, Exploited, and The Damned. Anyways, I higly recommend this album.
Maybe the best damned DAMNED album.......2005-08-27
and I mean it. My favorite Damned albums were Strawberries, Machine Gun, Anything, and Not of this Earth. I liked them all but those were my favorites. Grave Disorder is now in the list of my favorites. Ever since I got this album, it has been a mainstay in my CD player. Pinch is so tight on the drums, I hope he stays with the band a while because the stuff he is doing is like a million extra beats buried under genius. The only thing I didn't like about the album was the song Amen, because I believe in God and I am Christian (the Damned is my guilty little pleasure), and so it's hard to listen to lyrics like that. But all around, GD has solid songwriting, and sounds like the Damned you've always known. Ol' Drac (as Sensible calls Vanian) sounds like a million bucks. The Sensible influence is profound here, and I mean that in a good way. When I listen to this album, I hear the Sensible influence on the songwriting and I can tie it to Strawberries, Machine Gun and the first album. Captain likes to write using a mix of chunky chords, guitar melodies, and screaming solos, all of it brilliant. It must be in the water up there in England or something, because most of my favorite bands are from roughly the same genre (XTC, Killing Joke, the Jam, the Police), all British, started in the mid to late 70s as punk, etc. At any rate you'll love this album. On the song Action, the band ends with an insane 3 minute noise encore, every bit as mad as the first album. Song.com is one of the best Damned songs written. Thrill Kill is an atmospheric, dark song about crime with a sort of tongue in cheek line "We're just having some fun, messing around with a gun, don't get excited". They also step outside of the goth for a couple of fun rants through highly charged material such as Neverland, Would you be so hot and She. All amazing. I'll never stop listening to the Damned. I wish they'd put out a new album by now. It will be hard to measure up to this one, but for gosh sakes please try!
Best Damned album since Strawberries........2005-06-27
Grave Disorder is the first Damned album since 1995 "I'm All Right Jack" and the first one with David Vanian and Captain Sensible working on new studio material since the 12 inch platter "Thanks for the Night". The two are the last
of the original members still working under the Damned banner. The new members Pinch (drums) Monty the (Oxy)Moron (synths and keyboards) and Patricia Morrison (bass and vocals) work together fine as a cohesive unit. All the material is new (except Neverland, it debut on Captain Sensible's Mad Cows and Englishmen independent record disc).
The Damned has never sounded better. David Vanian seems to be enjoying himself (check out I'm All Right Jack..)
and the good Captain's guitar work has never sounded better. Not an over produced nightmare like their last studio disc. A great album, I can't wait until they get back into the studio! The CD comes with a fold out that has glossy photos and a lyric sheet.
Highly recommended.
Gravely Amazing.......2005-06-25
This album is nothing short of genius. As a loyal Damned fan and follower, this collection of wicked fun combines all Damned albums from the past into one. Each song is different in style and fun to the bone, while adding splashes of 19th century gothic horror. This cd is all pleasure and no pain. This album has enough emotion and diversity to raise the dead.
Highly Recommended!.......2004-11-07
Grave Disorder is so incredible it's impossible for me to choose a favorite song. The best thing about the album in general is that it sounds like The Damned. I was at first a bit wary about buying this album because some bands will take a long hiatus from making records only to return and sound like rubbish, or as if they've switched music genres completely. I am now sorry I ever doubted Grave Disorder. The Damned still know how to be The Damned. This CD not only sounds new, but it also gives a feeling of the continuation of a musical legacy and only adds to their collection of amazing songs. Dave Vanian's voice is in perfectly beautiful condition and every other member also seems to be top notch. A definite plus is all of the interesting sound clips, keyboards, backing vocals, and other add-ins that the band chose to include in just the right places in almost every song. And all of the lyrics to each track are included in the sleeve. A must have for any (as the liner notes put it) "discerning music lover!"
