my all time favorite.......2006-01-30

If someone was to ask me who my favorite band is, it wouldn't be Le Tigre (although I am a HUGE fan and they run a close second and seeing them live really made my life). HOWEVER, if someone was to ask me what my favorite CD of all-time is I wouldn't think twice before saying Feminist Sweepstakes.

I have been in love with this CD for a good three years probably. I can't listen to it without singing along with every word.

Tracks like LT Tour Theme, Fake French, Tres Bien, and Well, Well, Well are playful and fun. Others like FYR, On Guard, My Art, and Keep On Livin' really get your blood pumping and also have such a positive message (especially Keep On Livin'...probably my favorite LT song for that reason).

The thing I can't get enough of is the powerful feminist strength behind Kathleen Hannah's voice. Her voice is the cherry on top that makes this cd not just a great listen, but it is actually empowering.

I never get tired of this CD. I can't say enough good things. Buy it.

The Most Annoying "Music" I Have Ever Heard.......2005-09-20

I cannot understand why this band is considered god-like in the indie rock world. I always found Bikini Kill to be bratty and screechy despite their valuable politics, but this goes beyond bratty and screechy to be absolutely intolerable. Atari-game keyboards and beyond-irritating nasal cheerleader-with-a-sinus-infection-on-helium taunts. A related irritation factor is drummer JD Samson who is a man in every way except biologically (and I do not mean this to be offensive. I have a few FTM friends but they proudly identify as either boys or transboys. Why does Samson still call herself a lesbian when she obviously goes out of her way to look like the epitome of masculinity AS WELL as maleness?, yet puts out a "Lesbian Calendar" full of supposedly "sexy" poses. I'm sorry, but as a lesbian my idea of a lesbian calendar is girls who look like Angelina Jolie posing. Samson is putting out the message that all lesbians either look exactly like men or date those who look like men. This has entered indie rock culture to the point that my girlfriend and I are blackballed by the local lesbians because we dare to look pretty in a world where Samson is considered the epitome of lesbian hotness. This really makes me puke, as it just contributes to the denigration of womanhood and femininity. Le Tigre gives girls two choices: Be a screechy loud hetero femme with a baby like Kathleen Hanna, or be a silent, surly, virtual male "lesbian" like JD Samson. And either way, you're a girl, so the music you listen to has to be bratty and obnoxious, not beautiful and languid like all of those indie male bands.

I got feminist sweepstakes 3 months ago, and it is STILL in my diskman! in general i prefer more hardcore crust music like rudimentary peni, crass,and Sub-Humans, but this is one of the best CDs of ALL TIME!

I have been a huge Kathleen fan since Bikini Kill. Julie Ruin was a great side project and then came Le Tigre, one of the best bands in my collection. I have purchased all of the Le Tigre albums and this one is by far the BEST yet! These 3 women take on political issues that are important to me and are usually overlooked. It isn't just girl power or riot grrrl anymore. This album covers homosesexual rights, gender differences, socioeconomic back grounds and how the poor get skrewed and the rich dont care! O.K. I may sound bitter, but I was so impressed by this album. My favorite tracks are "FYR" which is probably the most political of all the songs they have created and "Keep on Livin'" which still brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it. I saw them live on their last tour in Salt Lake City and it was INCREDIBLE! These women have energy, power, pride and creative minds that work together creating unique and beautiful expression. I love all of their albums, but Feminist is the best by far! You will not and could not regret this purchase!

Album Description

Le Tigre is Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill), Johanna, and video artist Sadie Benning. As an electronic act, the trio celebrates the radical aspirations of 90's DIY, feminist, punk art rather than playing into the "women in rock" stereotypes of feminist rage. This is their second album, which now includes a video of the song "Well Well Well".

Another Outstanding Album For Le Tigre.......2007-07-15

If you are a fan of Le Tigre, you'll this latest edition of their off-beat style of music. I originaly fell in love with the band while watching the movie "Better Luck Tomorrow." Their song "Let's Run" is what originally drew me to the band. A nice alternative to most of the drab music on the radio.

"If I can't dance I don't want to be part of your revolution." Feminist icon Emma Goldman's request has finally been answered in the form of Le Tigre. Though sometimes criticized for abandoning a more traditional punk sound in favor of synthesizer beats, former Bikini Kill member(and brainchild behind the lesser known Julie Ruin)successfully proves that she has much to say and is no where close to finishing saying it.
On Feminist Sweepstakes, Le Tigre's sound has a much more produced quality than the grittier sound of previous albums, but nonetheless maintains the uninhibited rawness that has now become synonymous with the name Kathleen Hanna. Direct in their intent from the start, Kathleen & co. boldly declare their mission as a band "for the ladies and the fags," on the first track "LT Tour Theme," in such a way that is so genuinely endearing and grateful to their core audience that any lady or fag that refuses to get up and dance clearly has a heart of stone.
Le Tigre never fails in the ability to connect with their audience, and Kathleen illustrates exactly how she has become the feminist heroine she is on such tracks as "FYR." In what is perhaps the most lyrically poignant song on the record, the women of Le Tigre call out to all their fellow feminists to help knock down the patriarchy, throwing out mocking statements like "Yeah we got all the power getting stabbed in the shower/ and we got equal rights on ladies' night" that are sure to hit a nerve with any woman tired of playing the victim.
Sure, Le Tigre isn't exactly setting Shakespeare to music, and the lyrics may be lacking in poetic ambiguity, but that really isn't the point. Though often didactic and blunt, the honesty of Le Tigre's lyrics creates a poetic truthfulness all their own which never loses sight of its intent. "On Guard" is yet another track that declares the strong-willed, take-charge spirit of the band, a declaration of power in response to the cat calls and physical scrutiny women face on a daily basis.
At times, the message overpowers the music, such as on "Dyke March 2001," a recording of the event which, though successful in its message, lacks the melodic quality that would make it a song to listen to on repeat. Yet overall, there is a down-to-earth feel to Le Tigre's words, a practical brand of activism that understands and empathizes with their audience. Le Tigre shows heartfelt concern for the people whom they are singing to, as on the finale "Keep on Livin'," a refreshing break from the generic lyrics of uninvolved mainstream rock stars.
Kathleen has lost nothing in the shifting of genres; still the s'wheat lady that gave a voice to a generation of women, Kathleen is every bit as affective as she was in her Bikini Kill days.
Whatever inspired Kathleen Hanna to think activism needed a dance beat truly deserves any praise it receives.

Okay, but I still love 'em!.......2005-09-28

Though I enjoyed their first CD, which I believe has a more real and uncut version of them. It's like they are not held back by some half brained producer in the studio, unlike this album. If this is your first purchase of Le Tegre, I would highly advise you to not judge them solely on this album.

True, they are one of my all time favorite girl-riot-true-uninhibited bands out there today, I am a critic. It seemed like to me that a few of the songs, were just thrown together to get the album out there. But a lot of the songs are so intricate and unique one of a kind, thus is why I even bothered with this purchase.

I think they mean JD Samson, not Sadie Benning. She stopped working with them after their self titled release.

I'm a little disgruntled about the fact that i already own all of the le tigre cds and now they've been rereleased and are all enhanced but they're a brilliant band and I'll probably buy them all anyways for the multimedia tracks, haha.

Kathleen Hanna and co. stack the dack this outing a little more towards pure activism than great songs, and when the mix is particularly bad - in songs like "Much Finer" or the yawn of an interlude "Dyke March 2001" - the album can feel too weighty and self conscious for its own good. But when the activism and music lines up, the result is explosive. I'm talking about "Shred A," "Tres Bien" or "On Guard" where the band makes their vivid goal of agit-pop-punk a powerful, undismissable project.
