Candy From a Stranger

Editorial Reviews
Spin
Candy from a Stranger has a sleek, well-crafted, "classic alternative" sound, and it features some gently sculpted textures--a winsome mandolin in "Close," a slippery Morricone guitarscape in "Cradle Chain." But even when Candy’s rocking hard, it’s tasteful and nearly toothless. Soul Asylum just sound hopelessly, if pleasantly, retrograde. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Entertainment Weekly
Acoustic guitars, heart-on-sleeve lyrics, world-weary singing--six years after their big commercial breakthrough, these mellowed-out punks ... should be ingested sparingly. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4 out of 5 stars Only know one song on this CD. But..........2007-03-07

...here is a track listing. The only song I have heard is Hallucination Generation, and it is a crazy industrial/new beat kind of song that used a healthy dose of sampling from those old horror and "drug awareness" movies from 50+ years ago. The music project is by Solomon Pearbrook (aka DJ Morpheus) and Bertrand Burgalat (Laibach) and this CD includes some collaboration from The Orb, Thrash and Fortran 5. Sorry I don't know the rest, but at least you know what's on the CD now.

    1) I am the Light
    2) Burnt Out Celebrity
    3) I Don't Care
    4) Hallucination Generation
    5) Heaven is the Home
    6) Buried Dreams
    7) Cruising Down the Highway
    8) Make No Sense
    9) Kind Pest's Last Chance
    10) Tricky Dicky
    11) I'm the Light (Holy Communion Mix)
    12) I'm the Light (Thrash Version)
    13) I'm the Light (Cult World Mix)
    14) I'm Lightsome (Ambient Version)

3 out of 5 stars Soul Asylum, just toned down a little.......2006-09-20

This is probably Soul Asylum's most mellow album. It lacks the intensity of some of their earlier work but it is still tuneful in most places. It has some pretty good songs most notably I will still be laughing and New York Blackout. I only had Grave Dancers Union and Let Your Dim Light Shine when I bought this one and upon first few listens I kept thinking "Man, come on wheres the get up and go?" I appreciate it for what it is, a decent, mellow Soul Asylum record which is better than most music out there. Its not their best album but it isnt bad either.

    1 out of 5 stars Skip it.......2006-09-11

I love Soul Asylum. I like every single other one of their releases, and downright love some of them.
This cd is chock full of boring, uninspired, defeated, depressing songs that lyrically, sonically, and emotionally sound phoned in. This is the one they put out because they had to. Skip it.

      Album Description

A debut solo album by multi-instrumentalist Jen Schwartz. In essence, a collection of journal entries recounting times fo lost love and life's lessons learned hard. Schwartz's music is a perfect mixture of the aggressive and the beautiful. Her heart-felt creations evoke multi-dimensional excursions through the psyche. Perhaps the strength in her music lies in her ability to slither through a diverse range of emotions, leading listeners on a journey wrought with fierce mood swings and fluctuations. She slices through the surface with raging power chords and percussive explosions, then lulls the listener with tender voice and ethereal waves of musical mastery.

4 out of 5 stars Diversity of style and a voice reminicent of early Janis Ian.......2001-06-24

I am a dj for a college staion and came across this cd there. From one track to the next there is sometimes so much contract that one cannot believe it is the same artist. Awesome cd, have enjoyed it very much.

1 out of 5 stars Boring, bland, and overwrought.......2001-05-23

This CD has no reedeming qualities. The lyrics consist of self-pitying, overwrought sob stories. The songs themselves tend to blur into each other. You won't find yourself humming any of these tunes! Schwartz's voice is not displeasing, but neither is it particularly memorable. It's just mediocre, like the rest of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars She did it her way.......2000-10-04

In an age of bubble-gum, record-industry-puppet pop and stale male guitar bands, this record stands squarely in a league of its own. How many musicians write, record, and produce their own material these days? And how many have the guts to strip themselves of convention and contrivance to create a raw, unaffected product? On Candy From a Stranger, Schwartz accomplishes all of this, with a grace and originality that is sorely lacking in today's mainstream music. Fans of thoughtful, independent music find a winner in Jen Schwartz.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-10-04

This is by far the best blend of singing and instrumental use by one artist I have ever come across. I highly recommend to anyone that they should purchase this CD. Great CD from a new artist. A+

5 out of 5 stars Fan of Jens.......2000-07-21

Having listened to this CD recently. I was very surprised that someone is talented enough to play all the instruments & arrange all the songs. This is a piece of work that should get recognised for the commitment to actually be able to finish the album on ones own time. using every bit of lifes experience to produce a moving talented album.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst CD I've Had The Misfortune To Buy..........2001-04-26

After enjoying GDU and hanging on every moment of Dim Light after thousands of listens, I bought this CD the moment it came out. Frankly, I'm so ashamed of that purchase, I couldn't come out until now.

I don't care about labels, and I expect a band to evolve. So anyone who screams about ANY band that they 'lost their roots,'or the greater favourite 'sold out,' I say the person yelling has too much money and too little talent of their own.

And it's not the subjective thing of a softer sound that demotes this album as too vile to use for a frisbee; it's that they went from absolutely BRILLIANT lyrics on Dim to - oh it hurts to say it- sop almost too cliched and meaningless for the likes of shallow drones, like, say, Britney Spears. There was clever wit in GDU, and phrasing all through Dim is strong enough to read like poetry in its own right and never gets old. 'String of Pearls' remains one of the best songs I know of: period.

And what do you get on Candy? ***. That's what. They're so ashamed of the lyrics they don't even print them in the CD liner! At least this is the best way I could explain it.

I knew I was in trouble right from the start, but by 'Close' I just couldn't stand it. I started skimming tracks, and they were all awful.

Sum up: I didn't even manage to survive one whole listen of the album. That was a first, and is going to be a last...

Forget the Milli Vanilli refund, THIS was the worst rip off ever, and I want my money back!

2 out of 5 stars Horrible production of okay songs.......2001-03-11

I agree with people in here saying that the producer, Chris Kimsey, sucks and should have his eardrums popped with an ice pick or similar instrument to prevent him from wreaking more havoc. I heard these songs - pre-Kimsey - demos from Pachyderm Studio - that were much, much better. They sounded good live too - not as good as their early 90s late 80s stuff, but not as bad as this record turned out.

1 out of 5 stars The curse of Winona.......2000-11-14

The curse of Winona: a general law that states when your frontman takes up with a famous Hollywood actress, all that celebrity head turns their musical nous to margarine. It nearly happened to Dave Grohl, and just look what Barbara Bach did to Ringo, Courtney to Kurt, Faye Dunaway to Peter Wolf...the list goes on and on.

Granted, the process of blandification for this group of non-starters began long before their previous album, 1995's truly abysmal LET YOUR DIM LIGHT SHINE, a monument of major-label wet-rock angst. With a career that might be politely described as relentlessly B-grade, things haven't got any better. In fact, CANDY FROM A STRANGER is soooooo bad, it's even worse. How bad? How about Van Halen bad. If you believe such a level of decreptitude to be impossible, check the big-hair chorus and wank of a guitar line on "I Will Still Be Laughing." Not even Bad English or John Parr would sink so low.

A track like "Blood Into Wine" (if the title alone isn't sign enough) redefines the big, bad ballad and nothing is helped by Dave Pirner's nasal whine of a voice. On the stunning piece of acoustic junk "Shine", he actually sounds like Axl Rose.

Some bands want to be great. Others are happy just to get on a soundtrack once in awhile.

        4 out of 5 stars Very good!.......1999-11-14

Despite the non-good reviews...this album has great music. There are happy songs, but the ballads really give the album a sense. The best tracks are Blood into wine,The Game, and See You later. I've enjoyed the music very much.

4 out of 5 stars This CD is pretty spiff.......1999-07-14

It's a really good album, maybe not for everyone's tastes but I think it's cool how SA can change their sound so much and still sound good.
