The In Sound from Way Out!
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
American bands have never gotten in the habit of their British counterparts, who tend to release lots of extended singles filled out with not-meant-for-prime-time experimentations. If the Beasties had gotten into that habit, this would be their B-side compendium: a dozen instrumental tracks showing off their groovier side, complete with plenty of wah peddle on the guitar and prominence given to frequent Beastie collaborators "Money" Mark Nishita (keyboards) and Eric Bobo (percussion). It's tough to believe that the same band is responsible for this and the Aglio e Olio EP, but it goes a long way in explaining how they've remained viable for so long. --Randy Silver --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Great Instrumental Album.......2007-06-04
This is a great chill, party album. A great collection of the Beasties' instrumental tracks taken from previous albums.
The Beasties' Best Effort.......2007-05-28
This CD really showcases the band's talent. An amazing disc from start to finish. Not for you "classic" Beastie Boys fans, as this is an all-instrumental, all-funk CD. It's reminiscent of old Meters. I've yet to turn someone on to this and not have them LOVE it. Boys -- we'd love to see you do more of this amazing stuff!
Top Shelf.......2006-11-11
Had the 'cassette' wore it out listened to it so much! Never heard anything the Beastie Boys have done that I didn't like. The In Sound from Way Out reminds me of the type of music my father's generation would have enjoyed only with a different beat and different sound. At 50 years old I am very open minded and enjoy an extremely wide-range of music. Please note: This listing is in my wife's name!
You will not believe its The Beastie's........2006-03-18
You will not believe its The Beastie Boys, killer if you like pseudo-jazz / funk stuff, with no lyrics.
Impossible to find.......2006-03-11
Ive asked for this item everywhere and only amazon had it. its great.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Irresistible.......2005-07-29
From beginning to end this CD is pure delight. A great recording has great music, a great performance, and great sound; this one scores on all three counts.
Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals dominated Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s, and American musical theater has produced no more consistently eloquent and durable voice than Richard Rodgers. From his fertile genius flowed a surprising number of memorable songs, many of which have passed into and become an accepted and beloved part of modern American culture.
This well-filled CD (77:36) features symphonic arrangements (all but two by Robert Russell Bennett) of the music from Oklahoma (1943), Carousel (1945), State Fair (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Flower Drum Song (1958), and The Sound of Music (1959). All the great tunes are here in suites from each musical that average 10-12 minutes in length. The arrangements are expert: rich, varied, and colorful. The performances are polished, idiomatic, and irresistible; Kunzel and this orchestra are thorough masters of this kind of material. And Telarc's sound (recorded 1991) is state-of-the-art (engineer Michael Bishop deserves to take a bow).
In short, there's nothing here to cloud your listening pleasure (the only quibble I can imagine is that some of your favorites may not last long enough), so it's hard for me to envision anyone with ears and a taste for music who wouldn't enjoy this CD. Warmly recommended. Finally, if you like this one as much as I do, you might want to know that the same team has produced a companion volume, the Lerner & Lowe Songbook for Orchestra.
"Some Enchanted Evening" with Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops.......2003-12-26
Erich Kunzel's Rodgers and Hammerstein anthology with the Cincinatti Pops Orchestra is one of the best and most ravishing instrumental Rodgers and Hammerstein albums of all time. With sumptuous arrangements and warm, natural Telarc recording, this glorious 77-minute CD presents sweeping, melodic arrangements of over 60 Rodgers and Hammerstein selections, spanning eight scores, and Kunzel allows the Pops to play with a characterful and polished understanding of the Rodgers and Hammerstein idiom. The disc is enough to cheer you up on a dull day and make you smile, and it might even want to make you feel like a convert to Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.
This CD has all the scores arranged chronologically. The OKLAHOMA! suite that opens this disc promises a feast for the senses, Kunzel ably evokes the territory's "bright, golden haze" in the way he conducts the various excerpts, until you feel the atmosphere of the country charm of the show, and the love-affair between Curly and Laurey. Then, in CAROUSEL, he ably evokes the pathos of this tragic R&H masterwork, especially in the truncated Waltz, but he leads a wonderfully melodic "June is Bustin' Out All Over" and a devotional "You'll Never Walk Alone." Although this suite does not include Billy's pivotal Soliloquy, it includes "If I Loved You" as an expression of his love for Julie, and within minutes you could be soaked in the ups and downs of the show's mood.
After a brief STATE FAIR suite, with sweeping renditions of "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "It's a Grand Night for Singing", we are brought into the disc's showstopping highlights. These highlights are the excerpts from SOUTH PACIFIC, THE KING AND I, and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. But yet Kunzel conducts the rest of the disc until the various suites amount to a series of showstoppers. These three suites present wonderfully-arranged versions of their many familiar classic songs, with well-played solos. The SOUTH PACIFIC suite presents the songs in chronological order, yet preserves the atmosphere of the show at the same time. Kunzel ably brings out the romance in "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Younger than Springtime," and contrasts it with the exotic and dreamlike "Bali Hai'i" and the comic "There is Nothing like a Dame" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair". Although the suite ends quietly with a reprise of "Dites-Moi" rather than the reprise of "Some Enchanted Evening," within minutes we are swept into the KING AND I suite. Kunzel ably brings out the Oriental pathos in this score, and he captures the warmth of Anna's rapport with the King's Siamese children in "Getting to Know You", and with the King himself in "Shall We Dance." There is also romance in the love ballads "I Have Dreamed" and "We Kiss in a Shadow." Similarly, in the selection from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Kunzel conducts this until the orchestra soaks itself in the atmosphere of this Austrian R&H score. This SOUND OF MUSIC suite has more of a feel of the score compared to the bonus track on Sony's reissued version of the Broadway recording. You can almost feel as if you are following the progress of the Trapp family and how it lifts its spirits with the joy of music. Kunzel gives us a soaring version of the title song, and spirited versions of "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favourite Things." He balances it with the open-air quality of "Edelweiss" and "The Lonely Goatherd." Although this suite could have included "Something Good," the love ballad written for the film, the three recollections of the songs that were cut from the movie only last for a while. And, the towering version of "Climb Every Mountain" crowns this portion of the disc, and this sumptuously-produced recording. But, I should also mention the infectuous FLOWER DRUM SONG medley, where Kunzel turns this underrated score into a work of art, until it convinces you to buy the cast recording. And, don't forget about the brief CINDERELLA WALTZ, too, when Kunzel conducts it magically, until you feel like you are in the company of Cinderella and the Prince. He is able to show how this R&H score marked a comeback for R&H after the failiures of Me and Juliet, and Pipe Dream.
Overall, this glorious Rodgers and Hammerstein recording is guarunteed to make you want to pucker your lips out for a whistle or sing along (to paraphrase another revew for Kunzel's Disney Spectacular disc) - even if this recording is music only, and as long as you know the words to the songs (and you might know a large handful of them already.) There is always a certain magic in this fine CD that makes you feel like you're sitting in the theatre watching these musicals, until it makes you feel like it is truly, to borrow two R&H song titles, "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Something Wonderful" to be in Kunzel's company for this R&H offering. It would certainly be one recording that could make you feel willing to buy the complete cast recordings of the shows. And I guaruntee that it will make you feel willing to pull out your existing copies of the cast recordings to listen to them again. I also guaruntee that it will be a cornerstone in any Rodgers and Hammerstein collection, just as it is in mine. Recommended heartily to any Rodgers and Hammerstein enthusiast and to fans of Erich Kunzel's work. And, you can play it while reading the Richard Rodgers biography, Musical Stages, until Rodgers himself would count this as his favourite disc in the afterlife.
By the way, most of the arrangements for the suites on this CD were done by the veteran R&H orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett, and it surely adds to the appeal of this recording. This itself is enough to amount to the icing on the cake, since Kunzel conducts them well on here, and since this recording still allows the suites to have the original theatrical atmosphere. And, although this recording is like the Mauceri collection of the Rodgers & Hammerstein overtures in compiling orchestral suites of Rodgers & Hammerstein, I think that I like the Kunzel recording even more because Kunzel has more magic in his conducting of these suites.
Excellent!.......2003-04-08
This is one of the best Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops collections we own! A must for Rodgers and Hammerstein fans, too.
Great Arrangments.......2001-09-02
This is a first rate album with great arrangments and orchestrations. If you're a Rodgers and Hammerstein fan, you can't afford to miss this specatacular album

Cute moog madness.......2007-06-11
Both this compilation and "The Essential Perrey & Kingsley" feature all the tracks from the 2 collaborative Perrey & Kingsley albums:
"The In Sound from Way Out!" and "Spotlight On The Moog (Kaleidoscopic Vibrations)".
But this one also features all the tracks from Jean-Jacques Perrey's solo album "Moog Indigo".
So if you were thinking of buying "Essential", "In Sound" or "Mood Indigo" don't spend so much money. All those tracks are here!
There are classic tracks of all 3 original albums compiled here, so they're a must-have if you like incredibly strange music or moog/electronic sounds.
Note though that not all these experiments in happy zing-boink grooviness work, but the ones that do will blow your head off!
Try it, you won't regret it.
Back to the future.......2002-12-07
Ever notice how things that were made specifically to appear futuristic(like any average episode of "Star trek" for instance)end up seeming a million times more dated than anything else from that particular era? Well add this album to the list. And thats not at all a bad thing...the irony of the whole thing is a work of art in itself.Such warm and fluffy feelings of nostalgia coming from music that upon its initial composition was intended to evoke visions of the future.Electronic music has come a long way since the days of Analog...but when you hear that opening synth riff from "The savers" you'll find it hard to believe it's over 30 years old (despite the "Georgy girl-ish" melody of the main body of the song).Sure there's some throwaway tracks here, but that's more of a complaint to be lodged against the original albums from which this compilation was made from...It's this compilation in fact, which inspired me to give it five stars, based on the music alone I still would have given it four stars. This compilation is incredibly economical being that it contains 4 original albums by Perrey and or Perrey and Kingsley! The remix stuff by Fat boy slim or whatever is pointless of course (as is 95 percent of that kind of dance junk anyway) but who cares? This album is for all those people who were born before the 1970s and are still asking the question "It's the 21st century already! So where are all the flying cars and robot maids?" And are just a little bummed about it.
Nice novelty disc.......2001-11-26
There is such a thing as "too much of a good thing"
You'll be ready to switch CDs about halfway through the first one.
The album is a quirky patchwork of pioneering moog work, though I wouldn't consider it 'listenable' for more than a track or two.
The music that's there is great, but it gets a bit painful after too long. Throw a couple tracks into your winamp playlist, but you probably won't want to listen to it all at once.

A Slice of History!.......2003-11-15
This is a fantastic CD! I wish I knew more about the details of these recordings, because I suspect that some of them have been gathered from unusual sources. Because of the sound quality, I wouldn't be surprised to find that Cole Porter's own rendition of Cest Magnifique was recorded at a party or other informal occasion. It has that kind of intimate feeling.
At any rate, don't be put off by the fact that some of the recordings don't have the polished, studio sound of modern recordings. It is absolutely incredible hearing these Cole Porter hits being done by such varied artists as Mel Torme, Bobby Short, Rosemary Clooney, Jo Stafford, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Marian McPartland (the wonderful jazz pianist).
You can't help but feel that you are experiencing history when you listen to this CD. I only wish that I had realized that all three volumes were available as a boxed set. Must buy that next! (ASIN: B00001T3IP).

Album Description
An historic footprint in the evolution of electronic music, unique to its time, yet still valid today, Seven Waves is Ciani's first album and established her romantic, melodic, classically-inspired, and sensual identity as a composer. Over 100,000 sold worldwide.

If exploring this artist's work, buy Seven Waves last ...................2007-07-09
Primitive synths and uninspired tunes. A fossil footprint of a deceased animal. The electronic instruments improved and so did her composing skills.
Did not age well at all........2003-09-09
After reading about Suzanne Ciani in Analog Days (see my review) and her important role in the early days of the synthesizer I picked up this, her first, album. It was disappointing to me that, although she had been making music forever, her first album would not appear until close to 1980. This means that her instruments are rather more modern than the original Moogs and Buchlas that I'd been expecting to hear. It feels to me like some essential history of electronic music went unrecorded.
And then, considering that the instruments were so much more modern than the old Moogs and Buchlas, this album sounds paradoxically extremely dated. These are the Prophet V and Synclavier sounds that history has preferred to forget, I guess.
Disappointing in many respects.
Soothing.......2003-02-19
Fans of new age music tend to fall into two camps. You have the elevator music nerds, and the ambient heads. Well Suzzane Cianni captures the ears of both listeners with this unassuming early 80's release. "Seven Waves" combines the consistent theme of the sound of ocean waves mysteriously crashing against the shore, with hypnotic synth compositions. I love this album. Something about it craves to be played, only at night. It stimulates deep thought, slow sex, and eventually, the most peaceful sleep you've ever had. Don't be surprised if after listening to the first track, you find yourself sitting in the dark with your eyes closed, slowly drifting away to the scent of Nag Champa smoke.
Still listening after all these years.......2002-06-17
I first bought Seven Waves on vinyl in 1984; replaced it in 1986; and later got the CD. With synthesized surf crashing woven into to water-themed melodies, it instantly became my wife's and mine favorite "bed-time" music. We still love it
after all these years, making it onto my top 5 of all time list!
Seven Waves.......2001-08-11
I think the only thing I wish was that the album was longer. This is peaceful and electronic. I would recommend this to people who enjoy Wendy Carlos's soundtrack to TRON, and those who enjoy the soothing pieces of some Kraftwerk melodies, and Synergy. Suzanne Ciani is the person behind the "Welcome to Xenon" voice as well as, I gather, the various musical effects in the pinball game, which gives yet another reason to buy this album if you remember enjoying the Xenon pinball machine from the '80s.

GOOFY LITTLE RECORD THAT'S FUN.......2007-05-15
I purchased this CD because I have the record from the 60's. I first heard it at a picnic I went to with my ski club. The theme of the picnic was outer space and some of us dressed up as Martians. It is a good example of what a synthesizer can do with snappy tunes. It might take a little getting used to. You just have to relaxe and enjoy it. It is different from any other music you have heard. It helps if you've had a few drinks first. If you open your mind it is just plain fun. It is better than the other record in the same style that this group made. The other record is terrible. Too much synthesizer not enough melody in that one. This one is a good goof for a party record. Hope this review was helpful to you.

Review of "In Sound From Way Out.".......2005-09-07
Spooks in Space is a really catchy tune that I remember from the 60s. What I wasn't expecting when I bought the CD was the lovely Visa To The Stars which I could listen to over and over. I just wish I could get a version of Visa in clasical music mode, as that would be really beautiful. The rest of the selection is good if you like the composers sort of strange arrangements, and there is no denying they have a good ear for music, and their arrangements would be great for a campy science fiction movie. When I get a little money ahead I'll buy their next album.

Excellent Moog of the Era!.......2005-03-07
Of Gershon Kingsley's Moog-Work, I would by far pick this collaboration with Jean-Jacques Perrey over Kingsley's "Music to Moog By" any day. While Stan Free's one man band "Hot Butter" is still my top pick of Moog music from the 60s-70s era, "The In Sound from Way Out" is one delightful & kitschy listen.
Where Stan Free did straight musical Moog covers of popular music, Kingsley & Perrey become playful with sound effects acting as musical notes; everything from cartoonish computeresque buzzings to Space-Age bleeps to a junilant baby's giggle. If you're one of the many folks these days who like to throw retro-martini parties complete with smoking jackets, shriners' caps, Hawaiian grass skirts, bowling shirts and bongos, than I can say without a shadow of a doubt that you have found the perfect soundtrack for your fiesta. Don't delay! This album is way-hep!
moog baby moog.......2002-01-02
someone tried to turn me on to moog music way back in the 70s & i thought it was just the stupidest stuff i had ever heard in my entire life. give me disco, or give me death! then i recently heard some cuts from this album on april winchell's show (kfi 640 am) & i thought it was just the coolest stuff i had ever heard in my entire life. give me moog, or give me death! down with disco, up with the moog-meisters! (it's hard for me to believe that i could have such different reactions to the same dang stuff? & now, of course, i HATE disco! -- having grown out of it a long, LoNg, LONG time ago. oh, how i date myself!) my absolute favorite cut on this album is the one with all the babies cooing: Countdown At 6 -- it's so cute! my only complaint about this album is that it's WAY! TOO! SHORT!
Hello, kidhood! I love this album, but here's a better buy:.......2001-07-13
I also loved the off-the-wall, electronic magic of this album on Uncle Zeb's Cartoon Camp in Tulsa, but cannot recommend this album to buy when such a superior value exists elsewhere on this site. Click "all albums by Perrey and Kingsley" over at the left, then select "The Essential Perrey and Kingsley", which contains this entire album, plus another 14 ear-tickling tracks, for only 72 cents more. That's the album I'm ordering now.

I think this is going to be good if this is the brand new Oklahoma? I like partically all the songs except for Poor Jud is Daid and Lonely Room. I would go for the ballet but I really don't like that either. I like all the rest though.
