New York Dolls

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
In 1972, when rock & roll was all but dead in Manhattan, five cross-dressing glam punks from the boroughs convened and began hammering out crude, sub-Chuck Berry rock for the downtown in-crowd. It took another year before a record company dared to sign them, thus foisting The New York Dolls on an essentially uninterested world. Taking their cue from the band's guitarist/Keefalike Johnny Thunders, hardcore Dolls fans pooh-poohed Todd Rundgren's production as wimpy: twenty-five years after its release, songs like "Personality Crisis" and "Looking for a Kiss" sound more trashily invigorating than ever. With the Rolling Stones finished as a vital force by '73, the doomed Dolls were there to step into the void. A classic. --Barney Hoskyns --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars thanks, new york dolls........2007-04-12

i had just lost my little boy, my husband of 19 years had recently left me for a woman 22 years my junior, and i had a horrible rash all up and down my left side. i was DEPRESSED! i wasn't the old me anymore. kicked by life one too many times, if you know what i mean. then i heard this album. and suddenly i wanted to wear lipstick again. i wanted to put on lipstick and go out dancing. i was back! thanks, new york dolls.

5 out of 5 stars Hello Dolly.......2007-03-09

After recently seeing the movie, "New York Doll," I was jogged back to a time before we ever knew about The Ramones, Graham Parker, Cracker, and The Psychedelic Furs. This was sometime around 1973 where the glam sound was subtly mutating into early punk. And The New York Dolls may have been ground zero for that morph.

With the possible exception of The Velvet Underground, I can't trace any more seminal linkage to what was to come in the late seventies than The Dolls. Listening to this CD is like going back before the time of Constantine: no Sea of Marmara, no Anatolia, no Ephesus, no Byzantium. Just Rome as the center of the universe in the way The Beatles and the Stones staked an Augustinian claim to that center. The eastwardly itinerant Constantine seemed to be swiping at the wind; who could expect anything to come from that.

But listening to this eponymously titled debut, you begin to see the shape of things to come. At the time of its release, I remember the song "Trash" being introduced on a local New York FM station as the flagship cut from this raw new band out of the dross of Hells Kitchen. I remember thinking it to be a discordant, sneering mess of cacophony, scratching it off my list, searching more for the mellifluous sounds of emerging early seventies semi-prog Brit acts like The Strawbs, The Electric Light Orchestra, and Stealer's Wheel in addition to new acoustic, Dylany singer songwriters like Elliott Murphy, Daydo, Ralph McTell, Nick Drake, and, of course, Jackson Browne.

The Dolls simply didn't register on my new-bands-to-follow meter. But hearing them now, and placing them into the context of the post-Constantine period in rock and roll, I can suddenly feel their greatness. How they, maybe singlehandedly, constructed a new musical cosmos through a counterpoint of Shirelles cooing and Peter Wolf goof-shouting.

If you were alive in the early seventies, this is a great way to go back to a time in your life that was right at the dawn of modernism. As Chrissie Hynde said in the movie, The New York Dolls were "the one pinhole of light" coming out of this time. I still like Elliott Murphy, but there is no arguing with the vital sensibility The Dolls created that is with us today.

Review number 63.Originally unleashed to an unexpected public in summer of 1973,this was of course the glam rocker's very first record. If you think the Stooges were great, step aside, this CD reissue is ALSO a true Proto-Punk classic. Every one of this album's slamming tunes 'practically' pulls you in,like "Personality Crisis", the radio friendly(?) "Looking For A Kiss", "Lonely Planet Boy" (one of my personal favorites), "Bad Girl", "Pills" and "Jet Boy". So glad they've recently reunited, aren't you? Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars What more can really be said?.......2006-08-21

I'm a big fan of Bowie, Iggy, T. Rex and other bands of that glam/early punk era. This album provides a perfect mix of those genres. It's really hard to listen to this album and not hear how their influence spread to a lot of bands that would proceed them.

There really isn't anything I can say about this album that hasn't been said already. If you like the bands that I mentioned above, this is a must have addition to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Something Happened in Lower Manhattan.......2006-08-11

I had pretty high expectations for this CD when I first listened to it way back when. I understood that it was a recording of high historical importance and influence, and the fact that Morrissey endorsed it as his favorite CD - and does to this very day - certainly bode well for it. Besides, I couldn't help but be drawn in by a bunch of guys dressed as red light district Barbies playing trashy, menacing rock 'n roll in a brew of Rolling Stones-style blues and reckless proto-punk abandon. Moreover, in the wake of the glam rock of T. Rex and David Bowie, the New York Dolls imitated their fashions so as to flatter them, but took it to the extreme and gave it an irresistibly kitschy quality. Image was very important at the time, and the Dolls were wise enough to embrace it.

The best examples of what make the New York Dolls' debut so interesting are the manic opener "Personality Crisis", the jaunty, appropriately-titled "Trash", the absolutely superb swagger of "Jet Boy", which fully captures the "trashy glory" which is guaranteed to the listener by almost every reviewer out there. This is probably the best song that the band ever recorded. But the Dolls have more than sloppy rock 'n roll going for them. The poignant "Subway Train" - the first few lines of which are often used live by Morrissey as a segue way into other songs - and the acoustic "Lonely Planet Boy" highlight the band's softer side. "Bad Girl", on the other hand, sounds like a cover of a Rolling Stones song, and "Pills" is an actual cover (of a Bo Diddley tune), and a pretty inspired one at that.

There is much talk of the Dolls' debut as the definitive proto-punk album. I am reluctant to agree with this wholeheartedly, as the emergence of American punk rock was a very gradual one. From the unlikely spring of the early Love singles "My Little Red Book" (1966) and "7&7 Is", to the 1967 release of The Velvet Underground & Nico and the 1969 debut by The Stooges, through the New York Dolls (1973) and up to the first release by The Ramones (1976), it is difficult to pinpoint when the punk aesthetic was first realized - fully or partially - in the form of a single or an LP. (And it was surely before The Ramones started making an entire career out of it.)

Whatever the case, the debut by the New York Dolls and its follow-up, Too Much Too Soon, are fascinating artifacts in rock 'n roll history. By artifacts, I definitely don't mean that they are outdated or worthwhile as simple historical curios. Rather, I mean that they capture moments when rock had become more image-conscious, and less concerned about whether the music was tailor-made for mass consumption. As mentioned previously, the Dolls took the image thing to a ridiculous extreme, most likely for the sake of actually ridiculing it. On their first record, they were unrefined but accessible, thanks to Todd Rundgren's production, which gave the songs the muscle and sprinkles of pop sweetness that they needed for their intended impact. Overall, this is a must-hear record, and I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Product Description

The New York Dolls didnt look punk. And when they were busy inventing the American version of what would eventually get called punk, it really didnt have a name. Despite being championed by critics from coast to coast, the Dolls had more of a critical than commercial impact. Too Much Too Soon is the bands second album, produced by Shadow Morton, who had the distinction of having worked with both the Shangri-Las and Vanilla Fudge. In some ways, it could be said that this album splits the difference between those two bands, plenty heavy, but with a melodic undercurrent. The Dolls were not only talented writers, they were skilled musical interpreters, covering not only the Cadets 1956 hit Stranded In The Jungle, but Gamble & Huffs more contemporary (Theres Gonna Be A) Showdown, which had been a hit for Archie Bell& The Drells in 1968. At thirty years remove, the album sounds a lot less radical than it did in 1974, but with the thigh-high boots and platform heels, the lipstick, the poodle-on-steroids hair, the snarling vocals, and the slashing guitars, they didnt just push the envelope; the Dolls threw the envelope in a wood chipper and peed on the shreds. This album has just plain been out of print too long. Happy to fax that up for you. Incidentally, a reformed version of the band (only 40% of the lineup on Too Much Too Soon is alive today, and neither of them are original Dolls) is out on tour and is planning a new album, so you may get to hear David Johansen (a/k/a Buster Pointdexter) perform some of these songs live in the not-too-distant future.

5 out of 5 stars HOW TO DO COMPARE THIS GREATNESS TO ANYTHING?.......2007-03-03

Wow, reviewing the Dolls is much like reviewing the Stooges or MC5. Maybe even the Clash. My experience w/the Dolls started as a stoned out trip while in college to the local KMART (Kame a Part). I always cruised to the bargin bin (LPs to be sure)to check on what treasures some unwitting idiot of a clerk would mark down. And I found it there too. Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath (Live, Bootleg, no less), and even a rare copy of T2's classic, It Will All Work Out in Boomland. Anywho, one such journey yielded the 2nd Dolls classic, Too Much Too Soon. Talk about an chilling name for the future of this band. Mind you, this was less than a year after it's release! Back to dorm land to spin and drink. Now I can look back and see the blueprint for what was to come only 3-4 years later...Punk Rawk! Guitarist Johnny Thunders has been copied hundreds of times for his raw Chuck Berry influenced playing. Has there really been a drummer w/the force of Nolan for pure RnR? Right up there w/Exile on Main Street as far as classics. Showdown has to be one of the most exciting dancable tunes ever penned. Image, chops, and balls...yep the Dolls had it all. It you need any intro to this band, skip the crap w/reissues and bad live stuff. Get this CD and the 1st. You'll love it, baby...

Three decades-and-change since they disintegrated in a burst of self-abuse and self-fulfilling prophecy, the darlings of '70s proto-punk/glam stage a return to the recording studio that's as unlikely as it is good-natured. The opening triptych of "We're All in Love," "Runnin' Around," and the downright nostalgic "Plenty of Music" argues that remaining band members David Johanson and Syl Sylvain are more interested in celebrating their survival with a little sass than rehashing the sonic anarchy that made them. Yet veteran producer Jack Douglas never lets the band (now featuring Hanoi Rocks bassist Sammi Yaffa, guitarist Steve Conte, Brian Koonin on keyboards, and drummer Brian Delaney) become too absorbed in more focused songcraft here, injecting the same edgy, pop-buzz he imparted to Cheap Trick and Aerosmith on the infectious soul-punk single "Dance Like a Monkey" and elsewhere. Helping celebrate the Dolls revival in fine fashion are guest turns by Iggy Pop (the frantic "Gimme Luv & Turn On the Light") and Michael Stipe (who harmonizes on the ballad "Dancing on the Lip of the Volcano"), as well as Against Mel's Tom Gabel on the trademark rave-up "Punishing World." The Dolls have always been a triumph of attitude over art; ultimately little has changed here other than the bracing exuberance they bring with them this time 'round. First pressings of the release contain a 45-minute "making of" featurette as well as the bonus track "17," a lugubrious workout featuring Dolls inspiration/rock progenitor Bo Diddley. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Now in 2006, The NEW YORK DOLLS return with the follow-up to 1974's Too Much Too Soon that proves that the band hasn't lost a step and that they are ready to show the world what they've been missing. The new studio album "One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This" captures the spirit of a band that had disappeared long before rock n roll became about big business, and presents the essence of fun, revelatory Rock N Roll in its purest form.

5 out of 5 stars An Australian discovers the Dolls.......2007-06-27

Having recently taken an interest in the New York scene and the wonderful music that has fermented there over the past 30 years or so it was inevitable that I look closer at the "Dolls" I love every track on this cd and regard it a must have along with the 2 original Dolls albums. David Johansen is a great talent with his Dolls persona and the Buster Poindexter phase. Such depth of talent lasts and grows. This cd, 30 years after their first releases is missing 3 of the original band but is not diminished by that although it would be just wonderful to have had Johnny Thunders still with us. This oustanding piece of work is a credit to David and Syl who have created a wonderful work that stands out in these days of impoverished commercial with no roots.

2 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2007-06-24

We all know that Johansen and Sylvain are the only original Dolls on this project. That's OK since they were part of the NY Dolls creative core and most of David Johansen's best solo material was cowritten with Sylvain. I had high hopes, but the songs on this disc have the feel of something that was cobbled together in a studio under a time restraint rather than that of songs that came to the New Dolls in moments of inspiration. The Dolls trademard dueling left speaker/right speaker half-lead-half-rhythm guitars is sorely missed. David Jo's voice sounds kind of shot. I don't know. This sounds like OK rock and roll. There's just nothing really special about it. This is too bad because I really wanted to like this.

4 out of 5 stars back to the rock jungle.......2007-06-09

I will remember "the Dolls" for more than the debut in 1973 with songs like "personality crises" and the second album with songs like "stranded in the jungle".The album "one day it will please us to remember even this" is the best album yet, well produced and mixed by Jack Douglas." the Dolls"
has been better musicians over the years and is not so revolutionary now.Its a pop-party album with rock touch and some various ballads. The best tracks are punishing world, gotta get away from tommy, and running around which is miles better than the rolling stones has been recorded the last 10 years so i will always remember this record as the best new york dolls ever did?

5 out of 5 stars THE DOLLS RETURN!.......2007-05-10

Granted there are only 2 original members on this album, but it still rocks. The production is a little too slick for my taste, but the songs are phenomenal (with the exception of "Rainbow Store") and more than worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Lose.......2007-04-11

If you've bought this album, you either know the Dolls and their music, or you don't. But no matter which side of that tautology you fall on, you can't lose.

If you don't already know the Dolls, this is a collection of great rock songs, tightly written, well-produced, with smart and funny lyrics. Just listen to "Dance Like A Monkey," a hilarious shot at creationism with a thick, bouncy bass line. Or try "Gotta Get Away From Tommy," which combines piano work, a Ramones riff, and one of the funniest first verses I've ever heard. Possibly the best song on the album is "Dancing On the Lip Of A Volcano," a tremendous, building anthem. You might also recognize the voice of Michael Stipe on this song. Some other names on this album that might sound familiar: Sami Yaffa, Steve Conte, and Iggy Pop. So if you like what you hear here, find out just who the New York Dolls were and are by getting their first two albums.

The rest of you know the story. You know that David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain are the only surviving members. The rest of the players on this album, regardless of how good they are, are more or less session members. The result is that the album sounds less like a New York Dolls album, and more like an album by a band that has been influenced by the Dolls. Anticipating this, Johansen, Sylvain, and company have crafted a work that celebrates the Dolls's music and legacy. Songs like "Maimed Happiness," "Fishnets & Cigarettes," and "Take A Good Look At My Good Looks" tell the story of where they've been and where they are. For further proof just look to the album's title.

Far from lacking in authenticity, this album proves the spirit of the Dolls is alive and well, even if most of the original members aren't.

5 out of 5 stars Not for Dolls Freaks.......2006-09-24

If you are a long time Dolls fan and completist, view this as a great CD for driving around in the car, or for working out at the gym. If you were born after they broke up, and think Motley Crue or Guns N Roses invented this type of music, if you didn't know that KISS used to open for the Dolls way back when, or viewed the semi-drag get up on the first album as something to be scared of, or think punk was invented by the Ramones or the Sex Pistols, you need to buy this now. NOTHING afterwards would've happened without the NY Dolls. Period. EOC. All that happened after the Velvet Underground is directly as response to the advent of the Dolls. If you love late 20th century rock, and you don't own this, buy now. 'Nuf said.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Rock 'N' Roll.......2006-07-25

Released a decade ago, "Rock 'n' Roll" remains - for better or worse - the best single New York Dolls compact disc. If the reader has a turntable, by all means track down "New York Dolls" (1973) and "In Too Much Too Soon" (1974) - the band's two studio albums are both classics, and you'll get the original running order, fab graphics, and analog sound. And posthumous releases such as "From Paris With L-U-V" and "A Hard Night's Day" (two of the best) offer much terrific music to those familiar with the Dolls' albums. But at this late date - and with a surprisingly smart and potent 'reunion' album out this week - neither of the original band's classics have been remastered for CD since the early days of the format, and this 20 (21 in fact) track compilation beats both in terms of sonic impact. The debut, especially, suffers a significant loss of grunge in its feeble and thin transfer to digital.
As already described by others, "Rock 'n' Roll" has 10 out of 11 tracks from the debut (Bo Diddley's "Pills" is missing), and 7 out of 10 from the second album (including a longer 'Stranded In The Jungle' but excluding marvelous covers of Archie Bell & The Drells, Sonny Boy Williamson), and for a single cd, that's about as good as it can get however we might quibble about what was not included. This set is intelligently put together, and a generous 79 minutes. As far as rarities are concerned, in addition to the aforementioned 'Stranded...' there is the amazing, truly blissful opening instrumental 'Courageous Cat Theme' from the "Too Much..." sessions, and it's a classic on the order of Johnny Thunders' 'Pipeline,' a swinging, rock-out blast. Two others are Paul Nelson-produced demos from '74, the Stax classic 'Don't Mess With Cupid' and a Johansen/Thunders original, 'Lone Star Queen.' Both are solid and enjoyable, but obviously not intended for release. Yet the mixes are fine and any Dolls fan will be glad to have them in addition to this great band's all-too-slim body of work. The final rarity is an unlisted radio spot.
So, until someone gets the wise idea of remastering the original albums, this is the Dolls cd to get, and the band remains - however misunderstood in their own time - among the very best and brightest American bands to come out of the 1970s.

4 out of 5 stars A nice collection with a few unreleased tracks........2005-06-27

Rock n' Roll is a nice collection of New York Dolls music.
Not only are the tracks remastered but they've included a few unreleased ones as well (Courageous Cat Theme, Lone Star Queen). A cool booklet with a lot of information is
included with the CD. It's a shame this disc wasn't that well
publicized when it firsy came out. The disc sold poorly and their only two studio albums have never been digitally remastered. The only thing missing from this collection is the New York Dolls anthem PILLS!

Strongly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Their Best Compilation.......2004-11-22

This is what compilations are supposed to be. Great track selection, nice liner notes, cool pictures and previously unreleased tracks that don't sound like they should have remained unreleased.

While they were influencing everyone from Kiss to the Sex Pistols, the Dolls in their time were just all about high-energy, fun rock and roll with more than a hint of danger and swagger.

Unfortunately, despite the otherwise faultless track selection, "Give Her a Great Big Kiss" and "Showdown" are inexplicably left off, forcing me to keep my old cassette version of "Night of the Living Dolls." Those are two of my favorite NY Dolls songs ever, so I have to deduct one star. Still, this is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars New York Rock & Roll.......2004-04-21

They were of the Velvet Underground's lineage. They predated The Ramones, and were one of the few bands that Johnny Rotten acknowledged as an influence on The Sex Pistols. (I can't help but wonder if the the cover art of a crosseyed, busty blonde holding two pistols isn't a deliberate reference, but I doubt it.) The New York Dolls were the bridge between the hardline, anti-hippie New York scene of the 60s and the hardball, anti-hippie New York punk scene years later. This compilation bears testimony to the profound influence they had on later punk, although they themselves were not shackled to that image or self-conscious attitude. They were gratefully grafted to the simple term that perfectly suits the name of this collection: rock & roll.

5 out of 5 stars THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO CUM.......2006-09-29

I remember walking into the local record store and seeing the 1ST LP jump out of the shelves at me; I mean you just couldn't ignore a cover like that! With that in mind, I immediately picked it up and left. Short of the first MC5 LP, the Stooges, and discovering beer, I can't think of anything more important in my musical education. Combining Chuck Berry 50's riffage, early 60's girl group arrangements, and yes, good ol' RnR, the Dolls helped pave the way to the Punk world along with the Stooges and the MC5. Thunders guitar inspired 1000's of new guitarist in the punk world, out to set the world on fire. I mean, how many guitarist attitude actually comes through their playing on vinyl? Not many. And Jerry Nolan; man what a drummer's drumer. The dude was all over the place; a controlled Keith Moon at the least. Even though this LP was the first album, the next one, "TOO MUCH, TOO SOON" was even better for me; Shadow Morton's slightly creepy polished to the bone production makes it a keeper for the ages. The band never got their dues when they were starting; it seems this stuff took years to perk. All hail rock n'roll...and the NEW YORK DOLLS

2 out of 5 stars Typical Of Their Era, Hardly Ahead Of Their Time.......2006-09-08

I too recall reading a lot about the New York Dolls in CREEM, HIT PARADER, & CIRCUS Magazines back during the era of their two albums. They recieved a lion's share of press in all the major rock magazines and then some. At the time, in the early to mid-70's - I totally avoided any rock groups that dressed like drag queens with the teased hair, makeup, spandex, etc. cos their image alone made them questionable to me and I preferred the much better sounding music of mainstream rocker dude type bands. I did like an occasional David Bowie and Kiss track though. I can see now where all the image influence of the 1980's metal banger bands - Motley Crue, Ratt, Etc. - which I refer to as drag queen rockers, got their inspiration. I had never heard any of New York Dolls music till now though. Is this what all the fuss was about?!!! It gives one a great perspective [years later] while exploring their reissued music, that they were not "ahead of their time" as implied by their fans, but more typically along the line, musically, of what David Bowie & Kiss[who were a safer and more conservative bet at the time on several levels]were hashing out on the recording front. Definitely so, musically, - BOWIE & KISS were already covering/breaking that ground and gained the mass appeal, commercial success. Whenever a heralded 'critics' darling' band fails to ignite the expected commercial success and fall to 'cult status', they are usually lamented as "well ahead of their time", which in reality is not the case. In music, there is an audience and room for everyone and for preferred musical taste, and there is a vast and expansive field of sounds in the music spectrum in each respective era. NEW YORK DOLLS 70's recordings sound okay, nothing memorable nor classic here, just trash rock, yet they paved the way for those 80's rockers and possibly Boy George to gain mass acceptance of their respective visual kinky sides.

4 out of 5 stars 20th Centurt Yorkies.......2005-01-29

I suppose if you were the Layman you would appreciate this delicate orientation of "music." But perhaps you are no such man, perhaps you have sense enough to care about what makes music a musical masterpiece of music that was barely even music anymore, it was a medium that was anything but medium. In reality, this is unacceptably horrible. This collection of cynical rollin rock is just a collection of analagous figurines, rolling in the bridges of New York's slums.

Yes, this is music. HOWEVER. music is not always listenable, and food is not always edible. Think about that for awhile, and watch your mind wallow.

The New York Dolls were nothing more that a bunch of guys playing music. And that doesn't mean anything to a person like me, a person who UNDERSTANDS things in their proper medium, and this is NOT the proper medium for anyone with ears.

True, the New York Dolls are percieved to be flying through the decaying wilderness of our respective minds, but, if we are to accept them, then we are meant to defy the truth of reality. Maybe once we ignore the peril of diversity, we can understand the trugh of music in its misty arfful decadence. Only if we dive beyond the symphony of apathy can we understand why this is not, a Master of the 20th Century

4 out of 5 stars This was America's best glam band.......2004-12-16

They may have only made two proper albums, but anyone who heard them fell in love with the New York Dolls. They came to conquer with power chords and panty hose. They played a hyperventilating trashy mutant blues and flaunted their unsophisticated style like the substance soaked louts that they were.

But this compilation serves them grandly. Taking five songs from each record and one rarity, it gives you a fine 11 song overview of the Dolls at their madcap and raunchy best. You can hear the Girl Group/50's rock roots in "Showdown," the blues in "Trash," plus their own ahead of the times originality on their best song, "Personality Crisis." Lead singer David Johansen had the swagger of Jagger and the campiness of too many nights in Manhattan Bars, best shown in the Dolls' cover of "Stranded In The Jungle." Johnny Thunders and Syl Sylvain made twin guitar thunder and the late Arthur Kane played his bass like a mad bomber, while Jerry Nolan was probably one of the best drummers of the NYC Scene.

But the Dolls were ultimately more than the sum of their parts, which is why the booze/heroin laden implosion stopped them all cold (save Johansen). I may not be the biggest fan of the Millennium Series, but in the case of The New York Dolls, this one of the good ones.

3 out of 5 stars Crazy Glammed-Out Punk Rock.......2004-05-20

A strange melting pot was brewing in New York in the early 70's. A group of guys decided they would mix the glam rock of the day(David Bowie, Sweet) with the heavy metal of the day(Led Zeppelin, KISS) and the quasi-punk(Iggy and the Stooges.) What a strange brew. Punk rock and glam are the obvious influences, but ther is some heavy metal thrown in there, too. It's obvoius where Nikki Sixx of the Crue got that hairdo. It was from Johnny Thunders of the Dolls! Although this kind of music isn't exactly my taste, I fugure it's pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal & Sloppy Wonderful.......2006-06-24

Don't think of buying this instead of the two (2) studio albums. Buy this as companion. This is what the Dolls sounded like when you saw them in a cramped, sweaty club in 1973. Young, hungry, urgent, sassy, and confident. The star is Jerry Nolan's drumming. No matter what chaos was happening up front, Jerry slams the back beat and keeps the boys in line. Arthur's rumble bass is up front, and better represented here than in either studio album. Let's hear it for the underappreciated rhythm section. David is in exceptional voice throughout, and Johnny's nasal off-key vocals make me smile. I can see his screwed up face everytime he squeals "Trash!" or "I'm a human bein'." That's Queens, N'Yawk talkin' at you. Syl fills in all the blanks energetically and inventively. I've been waiting years to relive the Dolls' sloppy wonderful version of "Give Her A Great Big Kiss." Marty Thau's liner notes are heartfelt. I remember him first showing up at the Mercer Arts Center. Looking old school record biz promotor with a gang of juvenile deliquents. My only regret is that "Endless Party" was left off. It was always my favorite Dolls' song, and one that typified what they were like. RIP Billy, Johnny, Jerry, Arthur. Rock on, David and Syl!

5 out of 5 stars New York Dolls at their Best!.......2006-05-17

This is the good stuff.....raw and live versions with better sound quality than any of their studio recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Private World.......2006-02-26

Where did these guys come from? How'd they make women's clothes look masculine? I can imagine Marty's amazement when he walked into the Mercer Arts Center. Amazement and joy.
I guess there've been several revolutions in rock. I always considered the three main stages to be Chuck Berry, the Beatles, and the Ramones. But that third stage really started with the New York Dolls. (OK, nods to Lou Reed, T. Rex, Bowie, Iggy, Alice; they definitely contributed.)
Anyway, I agree with the other reviewers that this is the Dolls best disc (or at least tied with the first album). It gives us the boys performing all the songs on the two albums (except no "Puss 'n' Boots") before Todd and Shadow produced them. Todd did a great job with the first album, and Shadow did a very good one with the second; but here we have the raw material.
I'm thrilled to hear this after all these years. I didn't even know it existed. The band is brimming with excitement, attitude, and positive energy. (A lot of people don't realize that about the Dolls and the Ramones: the music is happy, even if some of the subjects aren't exactly comedic.) Johnny Thunders was perhaps the best pure rock guitarist of all time; right alongside Chuck Berry, and probably ahead of Keith Richards.
I'm so glad nobody has any interest in this music except for a couple o' hundred people. Let 'em eat cake.

5 out of 5 stars Loose and reckless - Dolls in their prime..........2005-08-10

This is a great representation of what the Dolls where all about. The tracks are live in the studio and appropriately loose, feeling as if they might just implode at any minute. If your a Dolls fan, this is a must have.

Will be revisiting these tracks tomorrow night when the reformed Dolls play the 9:30 Club in DC. They may fewer in number and a bit rough around the edges but it only adds to Syl and David's considerable charms. They're as campy and wonderful as ever and the new guys fill in ably (great to see Sammi YAffa from Hanoi rocks - one of the few bands who truly "got" the Dolls - filling in for Arthur). It ain't 1973 at Mercer Arts but they still wipe the floor with any of the over-hyped, over-rated bands who count them as an influence.

5 out of 5 stars The Best New York Dolls Cd.......2005-06-25

"Hard Night's Day" shows just how great this band really was. These tracks are basically in studio demos, recorded live with no overdubs. From David Johansen's growling vocals, to Nolan's precision drumming and finally Johnny Thunder's slashing riffs & rythms, this cd is all killer and no filler. This music has been presented on other releases, but I believe the 21 tracks included here make this album the most comprehensive album release available of this material. Purchasing this album is pretty much a no brainer for any NYD fan. Even if you have these songs on other releases from other labels, they are not this complete and do NOT sound this good.
If you are new to the NY Dolls, and happen to make it this far on curiosity alone, purchase this cd along with the compilation album "Rock N Roll" ASAP. It's is a great way to get you started. You can even get them both here in zShops for a really great price.

5 out of 5 stars Some Enchanted Evening is enchanting!.......2002-07-26

This album takes you on a stroll down memory lane, enchanting all the way. It is relaxing and soothing listening, and will be great background music for a candlelit dinner for two, an evening party with a mix of ages and backgrounds, or just to sing with while you get some work done. The orchestration is excellent and the performances wonderfully smooth. A hit for everyone!

The louder, clearer sound afforded by producer Shadow Morton makes the Dolls come on even brasher on their second and last album. In Too Much Too Soon finds their mix of aggression and humor intact--not just "in spite of" an increased reliance on covers, either, because David Johansen's taste in remakes expresses a lot about this music nut's crazed, loving worldview. Who else in '70s rock could make a wacked-out doo wop novelty like "Stranded in the Jungle" into an important personal statement? The Stones' late-'74 slopbucket take on "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" suggests that they'd heard the Dolls rewire the Philly-soul "Showdown." And while few of the punks who followed were to make as deep as claim on reality as the buzzsawing "Human Being" does, though many were to chip off pieces of the manic "Who Are the Mystery Girls?" --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars New York Dolls - 'Too Much Too Soon' (Polygram).......2006-11-07

Originally released in 1974,this was the band's follow-up to their self-titled album(see my review)and in every way and aspect, just as good.I remember buying this on cassette for $1.99 twenty-some years ago in a cut-out bin.Great to have it on CD.Tunes that I was more than casually impressed with were the straight-ahead rocking opener "Babylon",the bluesy "It's Too Late","Puss 'N Boots","Chatterbox",Sonny Boy Williamson's cover of "Don't Start Me Talking" and "Human Being".So great that the two still-living members of the Dolls have finally reunited and are currently touring the states.Prime proto-punk here for the taking.Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Guilty Pleasure.......2006-06-16

While not the rock milestone as the NY Dolls' debut, Too Much Too Soon is an essential addition. The cover songs are as much about who the Dolls were as the originals - Stranded in the Jungle is a loopy chestnut that was a blast on stage as the band imitated the monkey house in Central Park. Showdown was grungy soul strut, Philly by way of the #7 subway line. Human Being remains one of my favorite Dolls songs, an anthem and reaffirmation. Johnny Thunders' recycled Chatterbox under a variety of names and lyrics, but this is the definitive version. Shadow Morton producing is an obvious nod to the godfather of the Shangrilas - where do you think the "When I say I'm in love, you best believe I'm in love - L-U-V" came from in the middle of Trash came from? Not to mention the Dolls (later JT's) great cover of Give Him a Great Big Kiss. They belong together! The Dolls benefit from the sound clarity, bringing their chaos right up front and personal. To "get" the Dolls you need #1, Too Much Too Soon, Hard Night's Day, LAMF, Johnny's So Alone & Que Sera Sera. They really were too much too soon - you still hear them all over nuevo garage rock & punk. RIP JT, Jerry, Arthur & Billy.

5 out of 5 stars get it now before Now!.......2006-05-21

i will die if i don't write a review for this thin, slender, sleeve of heaven here on earth of horrors.

well the first album was unspeakably IT and this is the Dolls all matured, hot and bothered...oh it is beautiful and sad and wonderful and so mature and wise and experienced like a true veteran soldier of the vietnam war.

so different from the first album but i feel like i have witnessed an entire career in only two albums...well three if you also count the also must have "Hard day's night"

Gain possession of these three cd's and you will die of happiness and fright!

    5 out of 5 stars Party time!.......2005-11-07

I love this album, not because of its stellar musicianship or sterling
production values, but because of its *attitude*: there's a party goin'
on, and guess who's there? David Johansen and his pals!

Let's get completely wasted! Let's dress in drag! Let's pull out my old
record collection and play a whacked-out version of "Stranded in the Jungle"!
Hey, everyone join in on the chorus! It just keeps getting weirder and more
wonderful as the night goes on. Then after everyone leaves, you can almost
imagine having to pick up the empty booze bottles and cigarettes ground into
the carpet, wondering "who were those people, anyway?"

A wonderfully demented confection, served with a healthy dose of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Great album and BACK IN PRINT! (but not for long).......2005-08-23

I agree, it's a CRIME this album is out-of-print. The New York Dolls were around for a very short time. They couldn't attain mainstream success, and both of their studio albums flopped, but their music has aged well. Not only did they prove to be godfathers of punk (which really took shape soon after they broke-up), but both of their studio albums are now considered classics. The debut gets written about far more often, but TOO MUCH TOO SOON is probably the better album. Everything is a touch better: songs, performances, and most of all the production.

This used to available as cheap but excellent sounding CD (mastered by Dennis Drake, a good, reliable engineer who does good work). That CD was tough to find in stores and now they stopped making it. Fortunately if you go to Hip-O Select's website (I posted a link earlier, but Amazon.com censored it), you'll find that it was re-issued in late July in a special edition! Some specialty stores also carry it, but it's easy to spot because it comes with a Lp style jacket instead of a jewel case. Unfortunately it's a limited edition (another crime), and only 5000 copies will be pressed period. I doubt Universal will do the right thing and bring back the old budget CD, so go to Hip-O Select or ask your local indie music store (chain stores won't order it) and order it before it's gone!
