Genuine rock eccentrics are so hard to come by these days that we settle for transparent poseurs in bad Halloween makeup. Julian Cope is the real deal-so thoroughly out there that he was too weird even for American Recordings. Fans in the U.S. have had to wait a year for him to find a domestic label for this, his 20th album(!), but now it's here, and it doesn't disappoint. The former leader of The Teardrop Explodes is once again examining some of his favorite themes-environmental panic, pagan mystery, goddess worship, and technological fascism-tying them all together in a concept album about aliens visiting the earth in ancient times and giving us the secrets to personal happiness. I don't claim to understand it all, but the massive hooks, freaky Krautrock synthesizers, driving rhythms, and Cope's Iggy Pop-on-acid vocals mean that I don't have to, and neither will you. Just check out "I Come From Another Planet, Baby." Truer words were never sung. --Jim Derogatis

4 out of 5 stars A great 'pop' album.......2000-11-25

Cope's albums from Peggy Suicide through to this one represent a sustained output of near genius. Interpreter is let down just a little bit by its at times silly lyrics, but is full of great tunes with not a dud track. Like all of Cope's albums of the 90s it is best listened to in a single sitting as the tempo builds and the songs run together in a way that highlights their strengths more so than as a collection of individual tracks. Cope's new EP is now released and a new album is not far away. He is a relatively undiscovered & unknown treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Give me Cope.......1999-08-07

Every song is great. Every lyric is great. The mix is great. The musicianship is great. There is even great packaging.

5 out of 5 stars Music of Megalithic Proportions.......1999-07-31

Julian Cope does it again. This is a superb album. I Come From Another Planet Baby was a great rock single, with an hypnotic rhythm and great lyrics. Then comes a rehashed favourite I've Got My TV & My Pills...brilliant stuff. My favourite track is The Battle For The Trees, a politically motivated song, maybe, but this is Cope at his best. The album loses its way a bit in the second half, but finishes strongly with Dust. A great album from a great artist.

5 out of 5 stars Some of his best work.......1999-06-17

If your a fan Julian Cope's work then you'll love this. My favourite track is 'Love Boat' a real whistle along song - the one you whistle all day at work. The rest of album is typical anti-pop similar to his early solo work. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2003-10-05

"Adagio" is a collaboration of pianist George Skaroulis and composer Chris Spheeris. Skaroulis arranged sixteen of Spheeris' classic pieces for solo piano, giving them a personal and elegant interpretation of his own. I have several of Spheeris' early albums, but for some reason, haven't kept up with his work. Hearing these pieces again has renewed my interest, and has also sparked my enthusiasm for Skaroulis the interpreter as well as the composer and pianist. Most of the tracks are on the quiet side, making this an introspective and relaxing album - wonderful for reading and/or unwinding. Favorite tracks include "Elektra," "Andalu," "Juliette," and "Field of Tears." "Adagio" is an outstanding album, and I highly recommend it to those who enjoy reflective solo piano.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Great!!.......2002-02-15

This collaberation cd from Chris Spheeris and George Skaroulis is a simple reminder of how wonderful and melodic instrumental music can be. I purchased this cd not knowing much about Chris' work, but having been a Skaroulis fan for the past couple of years, I knew that the music would be top notch. Once again George proved me right. His interpretations of Chris' work is absolutely wonderful and you'll be treated with soft and soul-warming melodies. Sit back, relax, and allow the wonderful language of music heal you and bring that inner peace that we all yearn so much for.

Veteran director Sydney Pollack tackles contemporary international intrigues in this political thriller about a UN interpreter (Nicole Kidman) who claims to have overheard an assassination plot, and the Secret Service agent (Sean Penn) who's assigned to protect her. Composer James Newton Howard (a 2004 Academy Award nominee for his haunting score to M. Night Shyamalan's otherwise disappointing The Village) conjures up a brooding, mostly orchestral score that eschews traditional melodic motifs in favor of an often sophisticated musical tapestry of mood and tension. His soundtrack's dark corners are leavened by flashes of tribal drums and ethnic modalities that emanate from the plot's African concerns, yet Howard's music is primarily modern. It's not above some obligatory stem-winding and occasional flashes of McAction Film bombast, but overall it's a crafty evocation of mood and suspense from one of Hollywood's most consistently compelling musical talents. --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars No way to hear these?.......2007-04-12

When Amazon doesn't give us the ability to "test drive" the songs on a CD, how do we know if we want to shell out the $20 to purchase it?

I heard a James Newton Howard song on my local radio station, and the DJ said it was from The Interpreter. I couldn't wait to see how the album sounded (and this particular song, as I only heard about a minute of it).

Too bad. I'm not buying the soundtrack if I cannot hear at least a snippet of a song or two.

5 out of 5 stars "Atolago" from "The Interpreter" by Kouame Sereba.......2007-02-14

I bought "The Interpreter" soundtrack CD just to find out who sang the beautiful "Atolago" used twice on the soundtrack. I had to search all over the Internet to find out who was singing this gorgeous song, as it was uncredited on the soundtrack! Luckily Kouame Sereba had it listed on his own website, or I would never have been able to find out more about this great artist known for vocals and mouth harp among other African instruments.

He wrote and performed this wonderful song "Atolago" which made the entire soundtrack worthwhile. I love James Newton Howard, and commend him for his as always excellent work, but question why credit was not given where credit is due? This is unheard of!

In the film, you can hear the song "Atolago" inside the United Nations building (Drowning Man Trail) and at the End Credits.

This song is "a Power and a Prayer... a wisp on the wind that brings one nearer to God." For me, this music is "A Sunrise renewing the world again for another day." I would love to have the English translation.

There is much more information on Sereba's website, and he has played on "From Senegal To Setesdal" with Kirsten Bråten Berg from Norway (CD also sold on Amazon), which has become one of my favorite CD's of all time. One of his other projects, the "Dodo" project, can be heard on myspace.

I look forward to many more CD's and concerts in the U.S. that we can attend, as everyone should have the opportunity to hear this incredible music. It brings peace to the heart, makes one want to "dance with joy" and helps one to "forgive the unforgivable." There IS a chance for us all to work towards a world of "light and peace" which is the thrust of the film to begin with.

Sereba has played many concerts all over the world, including the Imagine festival at the Royal Festival Hall, in London, and has worked with many artists from Norway, where he lives.

He plays with a group called Zikalo, which plays traditional West African dance music. The music is written and arranged by Raymond and Kouame Sereba, both from the Ivory Coast. Zikalo is the name of the rhythm, that influences dance, play and activities in their home village.

The Group has existed since 1983. Zikalo also exists in a new and more modern version where the music becomes an exiting blend of elements from rock, jazz and the traditional african music.

More info: Biography Kouame Sereba, Musicians Portrait
From ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

Ivory Coast-born multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Kouame G. Sereba has played a major role in the music of Norway since moving to Norway in 1983.

In addition to playing "hundreds" of concerts in Norway, Sereba has been embraced by the country's government. The foreign department sponsored tours of Japan, Germany, and Africa and Sereba accompanied Norwegian prime minister Kjell Magne Bondevik to Angola, Mozambique, and South Africa.
Sereba joined with Norwegian musicians Kirsten Braten Berg (vocals, mouth harp), Bjorguiv Straume (mouth harp, vocals), and fellow African Solo Cissokho (kora, vocals) to record an album, "Fra Senegal Til Setesdal", that introduced his culture-blending vision to the international stage in 1997. In addition to playing guitar, percussion, and djembe, Sereba is a master of the dodo, a mouth harp known for its overtone-rich, almost electronic, sound.

Born of a chance backstage meeting, From Senegal to Setesdal marries the golden tones of Kirsten Bråten Berg (Norway's premier folk vocalist) with European mouth harp and the West African do-do (mouth-bow) and djembe (drum) player Kouame Sereba. Along with kora, Solo Cissokho's 21-stringed harp, Berg and her cohorts have created a sound of stunning grace and authenticity, performing traditional European melodies, West African lullabies, and a handful of folk tunes that are a mellifluous conjoining of elements rather than the overwrought fusion one might expect. Each member of the quartet sings, and while Berg is assuredly the best-known vocalist, the throaty tones of the men complement her richness with contrapuntal melodies, at times flowing seamlessly from one tongue to another. But the secret ingredient here is the presence of dual mouth harps, each providing rich texture, ambient drone, and mystical vibrations, each note a bread crumb on the path toward home. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars The best CD purchase I have made to date........1999-10-25

I heard a review of this CD on NPR's "All Things Considered," where there was a short interview with Kirsten Braten Berg and a few seconds of three or four selections from the CD were played. I immediately wrote down the title and artist's names in order to begin my search for it. I finally bought it two months later, and I am so thrilled by this purchase. The music is so beautifully rich and colorful, and displays distinctly diverse cultural styles while making obvious their shared nuances... and somehow, their sounds are similar in many ways. The melodies are contagious, and though I can't speak either language which is sung, the lyrics are catchy and fun, and I sing along anyway. I get the impression, too, that the musicians really shared a great learning experience while working on this project, each learning about the others' culture. This really is wonderful, mostly uplifting music. Adding to my fondness for it is the fact that I bought it upon hearing a review. Go figure!

5 out of 5 stars the yoga of sound has found an advocate.......1999-09-06

this cd exemplifies world music and the synergy of two seemingly exclusive cultures. the mouth harp brings a vibrational stage which is beautifully adorned by singing voices, high and low.this music is pure delight.

5 out of 5 stars Unlikely yet beautiful meeting of cultures.......1999-07-24

The concept of a meeting of Norwegian and African musicians sounds unlikely on paper. Surprise, surprise! This CD is beautiful and entirely unique! Kirsten Braten Berg has one of the most lovely, pure voices on the planet and boy does it sound good framed by the superb kora and African percussion provided by her collaborators. Stands right up there with the Buena Vista Social Club as a charming, fun beautiful listening experience that proves that music really is the universal language.

Accompanied by more than a dozen musicians and vocalists, Lee sings of the voyages of schooners and aircraft carriers, the losses of tragedy and innocence, the laughter from the past and the passion of life in today's Great Lakes experience. From the pen of Woody Guthrie, the Ivan Walton collection of traditionals songs, and the carefully crafter arranements of Lee's own words and music, this collection will be enjoyed by folk music enthusiasts for many years to come.

          Album Description

This set (this is the third out of seven CDs), would make an ideal introduction to Bartok's piano music, especially if you are still unfamiliar with the bulk of it. These are urbane, honest, eminently intelligible interpretations that will draw the uninitiated into the texts of this extraordinarily rich music. In her exhaustive survey of his complete piano works June de Toth proves herself a smart, solid, and reliable pianist. She offers thoughtful and often eloquent readings that reject both hysteria and the kind of kamikaze approach of so many young piano lions. Its overall sobriety and discipline is such that the music speaks for itself In the wistful 'Street of Istvand', for example, or in the rugged yet oddly seductive sailor song 'In the Harbor of Nagyvarad', her no-nonsense surefootedness gives ample voice to Bartok's nostalgic melancholia. Indeed, in these works, part of the 42 Hungarian Folk Songs for Children, she fathoms each as a kind of apposite gestuary of hemiolas and unnerving hesitations, and as the stuff of musical speech. If Bartok was Hungary's answer to Moussorgsky, nowhere is it more evident than here. Capturing the essentially trochaic inflections of Hungarian speech with the knowing temperament of a native (Ms de Toth is full blood Hungarian) she lays out the keyboard songs with the patrician air of an old storyteller at a family gathering. Whatever one's ideas and taste may be in interpretation of Bartok, her performances are persuasive. Take particular note of her attractive readings of the 14 Bagatelles: these she portrays with a kind of arid simplicity that enhances their now playful, now lonely ethos.

          Album Description

Peggy Seeger calls this CD, subtitled "Romantic Love Songs," "one of the most enjoyable projects of my life. Six of its songs are originals, three are traditional, and the rest are by other writers, including a haunting version of the Grammy-winning "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," a song inspired by Peggy and written by her life partner, the late British singer-songwriter-dramatist Ewan MacColl. The cohesive blend of original and traditional on this, Peggy's 19th solo album, makes LOVE WILL LINGER ON a flowing meditation on the different aspects of love, from playful ("Birds of a Feather") to romantic (the title song, "Autumn Wedding"), to sexual ("Mysterious Lover"), from ominous ("The Dog of Time") to optimistic ("Primrose Hill"), and all of the glorious and painful shades in between.

Peggy (vocals, guitar, concertina, autoharp, piano, synth bass) is accompanied on this disc by her three children - Neill, Calum (the CD's producer) and Kitty - and her former singing partner in the No Spring Chickens duo, Irene Scott, among others.

5 out of 5 stars Romantic love songs for people who cannot always be together.......2001-08-28

"Love Will ... Linger On..." opens with the best rendition I have heard of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", the song that Ewan MacColl wrote during a transatlantic telephone call to his lover Peggy Seeger, who needed a short fill-in number for a concert she was giving in the States. The production and direction of Ewan and Peggy's son Calum MacColl adds noticeably to the quality of all the tracks on this album. In fact, the involvement of Calum's older brother Neill and Ewan and Peggy's youngest, Kitty MacColl, make this album very much a family production. Their backing vocals blend just as harmoniously as the voices of Peggy Seeger and Irene Scott. Peggy and Irene are beginning to blend as a duo so closely that on some tracks their voices seem indistinguishable when Peggy is singing at a higher pitch. Peggy dedicates the album to her current partner, Irene Scott, for whom all her own love songs in this selection have been written. The honesty and maturity of the lyrics mark them out from 'puppy love songs', yet they retain a vitality that makes "An Autumn Wedding" sound not only like a pleasantly melodious waltz, but also like the passion of a new adventure. This vitality is present in most of the tracks. Irene's version of the "Fiddling Soldier" - a variant of The Nightingale Song (popular in Ireland) introduces the theme of distance in relationships. Lovers who are parted involuntarily (i.e. all those in distance relationships) will identify with many more of the songs included in this collection e.g. "Love Affair" and "Call on Your Name" (which has echoes of Tom Paxton's 'There's a dark and rolling sea between my true love and me' and a superb melody to match). There is also a spring-like quality in many of the songs - an honest connection with nature in "Swallow and Trout" and a celebration of love and new discovery in "Primrose Hill" as well as a knowledge and experience of the essence of love in the title track "Love Will...Linger On...". These are love songs for partners who are completely confident that they are right for one another - "Birds of a feather" who want so celebrate the joys of good companionship or who are longing to be together in the same geographical environment: to put it simply one another's arms. I currently have a distance relationship, which is very important to me. I enjoy playing "Love Will...Linger On", before, after and during.

5 out of 5 stars Seeger on Love.......2000-09-24

For those who have always enjoyed Seeger's work, this album is a blessing--clever, musically adventurous, and full of the Seeger knack for accompaniment. For new fans, it is the perfect introduction to Seeger's style and songwriting. Seeger, whose music has mainly been political and traditional, makes a bold and wise step with this album of love songs.
