Back in the '80s and '90s, Richard Thompson could be depended upon to release a well-crafted collection of Celtic-influenced folk-rock every few years. But when he left Capitol after 1999's Mock Tudor, Thompson headed off on side projects, all of typically high quality, but not the solo albums his established cult expected. Those fans can now rejoice, because on Sweet Warrior Thompson roars back with his first electric set of originals since 2003, and it's a winner. As the disc's title implies, he revisits the familiar territory of love as a battlefield in these 14 originals. The concept is emphasized by a liner photo of the singer/songwriter in army gear and camouflage flanked by two beautiful women planting kisses on either cheek. Supported by longtime backing cohorts, the guitarist adds to his six-string talents with occasional mandolin, autoharp, accordion, and even organ, all used as icing on a cake of tunes that further refine his established style. Perhaps the most startling song is the viciously anti-war "Dad's Going to Kill Me," about a soldier stationed in Baghdad (the "Dad" of the title), wondering if he will survive another day. "Guns are the Tongues" finds Thompson telling the tragic tale of a young man enticed by a woman's charms ending up as a suicide-bombing terrorist. Thompson's dramatic guitar solos are kept on low boil, occasionally bubbling up but never hogging the spotlight. They are, along with his distinctive vocals, actors in a play of characteristically classy tunes that will thrill Thompson's fans, who have been waiting for just such a set of literate and challenging music from a musician who never delivers less. --Hal Horowitz
Album Description
Literate rocker Richard Thompson's new album, Sweet Warrior, is a return to his classic electric sound, his first plugged-in album since 2003's The Old Kit Bag. Filled with 14 songs of stories of loss and betrayal, the album also contains one of Thompson's most overtly political songs to date, "Dad's Gonna Kill Me," told from the perspective of a nervous young soldier stationed in Baghdad (abbreviated as "Dad" in the song). Richard Thompson is a consummate singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His career stretches back to the late '60s, when he was a founding member of the British folk-rock Fairport Convention. In the late '70s, with his then-wife, Linda, he recorded Shoot Out the Lights, which regularly makes critics' lists of the best records of all time. In the '90s, he experienced another career renaissance with the album Rumor & Sigh and he remains an elder-statesman of alternative rock.
Customer Reviews:
Cool new album.......2007-07-15
Have been listening to it for a week. More up-tempo than his last album--Front Parlour Ballads--and overall, better. Also more consistent than 2003's The Old Kit Bag. Cool album.
Sweet Warrior - Fantastic!!!!.......2007-07-14
Sweet Warrior allows you to be in your own "private" concert - captures his muscianship - must have!
Thomo Does It Again!.......2007-07-11
Another superlative CD from Richard Thompson. Lyrically and instrumentally he is without peer. I keep expecting the odd bad record, but they just don't come from this genius of folk-rock. Together with Neil Young and possibly Van Morrison, he is the only artist whose CD I would buy unheard.
As good as his best..........2007-07-04
Wow! I was turned on to Richard Thompson only about 8 years ago, but have since become an ardent fan and I've been picking up anything I could by him ever since.
I generally don't like a heavy dose of political opinion mixed in with my music, but RT pulls it off here without being annoying, and considering the state of worldwide affairs it's actually pretty timely anyway. His anger in I'll Never Give it Up makes me wonder if he's dissing Bush or Blair, but one's own interpretation of the lyrics is what can make a song so delicious. His guitar playing continues to send shivers down my spine, especially on the track Take Care the Road You Choose. And who cannot feel sharp pangs of sorrow for the poor soldier in Dad's Gonna Kill Me ? Wow. RT's ability to elicit such emotion (through his lyrics or playing) are part of what make him such a treasure.
All of the songs are at least good, and most are outright great. In my opinion, this album will stand with RT's all-time bests.
WOW !.......2007-06-24
A truely great album oops I mean CD. I still can not get used to saying that. Every track is great !

Album Description
40th Anniversary Edition Of The Classic Album!
1965's Whipped Cream & Other Delights transformed Herb Alpert & The Tijuana into bonafide superstars, spending an incredible 8 straight weeks at the top of the charts. The album was not only memorable for its music, but for the iconic cover art which featured model Dolores Erickson strategically swathed in whipped cream. The original twelve tracks revolve around the theme of food and include such classics the triple Grammy-winning hit, "A Taste of Honey" and the Dating Game theme "Whipped Cream." This special 40th Anniversary edition features two studio bonus tracks along with a 20-page booklet and a collector's poster.
Each album in the Herb Alpert Signature Series features meticulously remastered sound, deluxe packaging, detailed liner notes, and an intro by Herb Alpert containing personal recollections and anecdotes.
Customer Reviews:
Becoming One's Parents.......2007-07-26
Well, this is one of those guilty pleasures that I shouldn't have, but I LOOOVE this album. I can recall hearing it in the late 1960s, as "old people" (i.e., 30 years old and above) listened to it, and I remember thinking "this isn't so bad." Now, the generation has turned and I'm listening to it and guess what--my kids are not complaining. The grooves and hooks are so thick you can walk on them.
PASS THE TEQUILA! AND LISTEN TO THE BRASS! ONE OF MY FAVORITES.......2007-07-12
I am repeating this story you are about to read as it gives an explanation of why I love this music so much! "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" has many of the songs on it used on the ride you are about to read about. It is one of my favorite Herb albums for that reason and I was mesmerized(as a kid)looking at that gorgeous cover! That being said....Please read on.....I have fond memories of the music of Herb Alpert! I was introduced to him at an early age as my parents were fans of his records. I didn't hear much of him again until I was coming of age in Wildwood N.J. at the age of 15 when I used to party under the boardwalk with my friends and our girlfriends underneath Hunt's Pier's "El Scrambler" ride. The ride played Herb Alpert tunes non stop! I guess you could say I became a "Man" underneath that pier with my first love listening to the Tijuana Brass. Later in life in my 30's I was taking a break from playing in a band in the local bars,I became a DJ and I would mix Herb Alpert in my mixes and buy shots of Tequila for my fans! To this day when I play these songs at parties we all look for the Tequila bottle! This is a one of a kind sound and if I were stranded on a desert island with only a few albums, Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass would be included in that collection! This is one of his best albums. I no longer own the original records so, I can not say if the new cd's are true to the originals. They sound fantastic to my ear!
Vintage Delights.......2007-05-14
It had been a long time since I heard this album on vinyl, but all the memories came flooding back. I had forgotten how well Herb and the guys actually played, and that each piece had its own hook! I recommend this CD as a piece of pop musical history, whose sound is every bit as fresh today as it was 40 years ago.
Excellent Music.......2007-05-10
I'm very please with my CD "Whipped Cream & Other Delights (40th Anniversary Edition)
~ Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass"

Whipped Cream: Not for the Lactose Intolerant........2007-04-29
1965's Whipped Cream & Other Delights transformed Dolores Erickson into the bonafide superstar of my adolescent whipped cream fantasies. Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass didn't do so bad, either, spending an incredible 8 straight weeks at the top of the charts. The memorable cover might have accounted for a large percentage of sales, especially among my demographic, but the music didn't hurt.
This is a prime example of the 60's "concept" album, with all of the intrumentals named after food. Lollipops & Roses." "A Taste of Honey" and the Dating Game theme "Whipped Cream." Etc. Etc. It caught the Zietgeist and rode it like a wave. Boys in Elementary School were inspired to learn the trumpet. I, among them.
I think the first record I purchased was Herb Alpert & TJB, but it wasn't this album, it was a 45 single.
I later did get this album, and several others of theirs, and then my neighbor's mother borrowed it for a wild party, and it got scratched from all the crazy drunken dancing.

There have been plenty of attempts to anthologize this venerable Southern band's extensive catalog, but this is the first one to get it right. Spreading 32 tracks from just over 30 years of albums across two discs, the immaculately sequenced compilation plays like a well-conceived piece. From the flute-dominated "Take the Highway," the opening cut of their 1973 debut, the Marshall Tucker Band avoided the typical Southern-boogie-rockin'-guitar path later epitomized by their more rowdy brethren the Outlaws, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Molly Hatchet. Rather, Tucker presented a more laid-back, country-based approach, highlighted by the jazzy playing of woodwind player Jerry Eubanks and drummer Paul Riddle.
Although the Capricorn/Warner Bros. decade that ended in 1983 accounts for the bulk of these selections, the last half of the second disc presents a revamped lineup led by sole original member/lead singer Doug Gray, continuing the musical legacy with remarkably engaging results. The 24-page booklet featuring a detailed history, a live CD-ROM track, and crisply remastered sound further enhance the experience that finally bestows upon this underrated band the comprehensive, classy, and long-overdue retrospective it deserves. --Hal Horowitz
Album Description
The first collection to feature hits from their entire career!
Along with Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers, The Marshall Tucker Band is the definitive Southern rock band. Over their storied career, they've seamlessly blended rock, country, jazz, pop, blues and soul into a beguiling blend of the best music that The South and America has to offer. The 2-disc Anthology is the first collection to pull together the highlights from their 30-year career.
It contains not only their biggest hits"Fire On The Mountain," "Heard It In A Love Song," "Last Of The Singing Cowboys," "Can't You See," "Take The Highway"but also such fan favorites as "Where A Country Boy Belongs," "I Should Have Never Started Lovin' You," and "Cattle Drive." Since MTB's on-stage prowess is legendary, a live video clip has been included as a bonus.

a good starting place........2007-07-04
this compilation is the perfect starting point for someone new to marshall tucker. and it's a little more poignant given george mccorkle's death on 6/29/07 from cancer. this was the best band america ever produced. they were THAT good!
I second Mike S........2007-06-03
To leave off "this ole cowboy" is inexcusable, or a gross mistake. Listen to that song, and you'll agree.
Even thought "This Ole Cowbay" was left out...still a 5 Star.......2007-05-27
Yes it is unfortunate that "This Ole Cowboy" was left off the greatest hits CD...but we, as consumers do not know why. Perhaps the holder of the publishing rights "sold" their interest in the song thinking that "This Ole Cowboy" would just fade away. Music, unfortunately, is a business...with fat men smoking fat cigars making fat money. Choices are made that we simply cannot understand. The best we can do is be thankful for what we have in so much beautiful music...there, I feel better.
After see them in concert.......2007-05-13
A good CD that I brought after seeing them in concert. If you like flutes I would suggest buying this CD.
Great Listening.......2007-05-13
I have it and I recommend this CD to anyone who even remotely likes Marshall Tucker. I had no idea of the versatality of this band.

Pianist Keiko Matsui, a favorite among smooth jazz and crossover fans for her elegant melodic style, breaks new ground on several fronts with Moyo. Having split with her husband Kazu Matsui, who produced her previous albums, she produced it herself, for a new label (Shout Factory), and recorded much of it in South Africa (as well as Japan, New York, California, and Colorado). Moyo has a high special-guest quotient: trumpeter Hugh Masekela, saxophonists Paul Taylor and Gerald Albright, and singer-bassist Richard Bona are featured. But the clean and sometimes spare arrangements allow the personal nature of the writing to come through. When Matsui trusts in the forceful lyricism of her playing, as on the title track (Swahili for "Heart and Soul"), she makes the strongest impression. But even when she employs synthesizer and soprano sax sweetening, the songs maintain their honest expression. The rhythmic thrust of South African-derived songs such as "After the Rain" may well open her up to a new audience. --Lloyd Sachs
Album Description
Contemporary jazz icon Keiko Matsui's new album, (Swahili for "heart and soul"), recorded with local musicians in South Africa, Japan and the United States, introduces new sounds and rhythms to her elegant piano melodies and gentle jazz grooves. For this project, Keiko invited other artists into the creative process, including legendary trumpeter Hugh Masakela, sax player Gerald Albright, soprano sax player Paul Taylor, bassist/vocalist Richard Bona, drummer Akira Jimbo and vocalist Waldemar Bastos.
Customer Reviews:
Keiko Matsui at her best.......2007-07-16
I have become a Keiko Matsui fan, and for an old sixties hippy, that's a big statement. In fact, I will say that this lady's lovely piano melodies coupled with a cogent rhythm in many cases are very often the background music to my own artistic moments. I believe Keiko Matsui is the most talented artist I have discovered since the Beatles! This album offers fresh, new adventures, but always there are the gentle Matsui melodies, and the input of her talented, multi-dimensional friends. Keiko's music matters, it is creative but also beautiful, calming but also very alive. You can't buy better by any artist!
Not Keiko Matsui-bland and piano in background.......2007-07-08
I have bought all of her prior albums, and many by her husband Kazu, and have usually been pleased with the distinctive variety of mix with piano and a variety of jazz or new age styles. But while this CD has a cut or two worth listening, most of this could be exchanged blindfolded with a large number of other boring lounge acts. Unfortunately, this album is like the many other "popular" jazz artists who tend to all sound alike, akin to the bland Americanized taste of a Mexican meal that is on the menu at almost every chain restaurant in the country. She used to be different, original and....I was listening to this for the first time in my office and someone came by and said "I thought you didn't like Kenny G." (I don't!) On many cuts, the main sound is sax, or some other not-her, so if you are looking for a variety of playing, like Wildflower to Dream Walk to others, it is not here.
Interesting Stuff.......2007-05-30
This is the first Moyo CD i've heard. It's very interesting, very good. Easy listening, and very smooth. I like the tempo's and the quality of the music.
I am definitely interested in listening to more.
Wonderful cd.......2007-05-27
Keiko Matsui is a awesome cd with wonderful arrangements & wonderful songs. She just keeps getting better on each new cd. Shes a awesome musician. I feel she as awesome as Jim Brickman, David Benoit & Bob James. Id say to go out to buy this new release of hers as quikly as you can & youll be glad you did. George
Another Masterpiece.......2007-05-26
I got a sneak peak of Moyo when I went to Keiko Matsui's concert in March, have been looking forward to the CD since then. I am happy to play this loud again in my ears!

Album Description
The Turtles are one of the most fondly remembered '60s pop actsquite an achievement considering that they came up in an era dominated by Motown, The Beatles and other musical giants. After releasing a series of chart-topping singles, including the #1 hit "Happy Together," the band broke up in 1970. Singers Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan continued as a duo under the name Flo & Eddie, recording albums, hosting their own syndicated radio show, and singing backup for T. Rex, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Blondie, and many others. In 1985, they reformed The Turtles as a very successful touring outfit.
Happy Together: The Very Best Of The Turtles collects the band's biggest hits, including the career-defining "Happy Together" and Top 20 smash hits "You Showed Me," "You Baby," and "Elenore." The album also features an early Warren Zevon-penned song, "Outside Chance," and Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe," as well as the classic protest anthem "Eve of Destruction."

One Of The Great Groups Of Years Gone By.......2007-06-18
This is one of the groups of the 60's if you want something to remember, or learn about from back then. They had a lot of great hits along with Peter & Gordon, Chad & Jeremy, Herman's Hermits, Gerry and the Pacemakers, & the Lovin Spoonful, just to name a few. Don't take my word for it. Listen to the sample songs and buy it for yourself. I just happened to grow up in the 60's so I didn't have a problem loving every song. After you buy this you may want to try some of the other groups next. It becomes a Blast into the Past or for those like me, a trip down Memory Lane.
A nice collection.......2007-04-14
This is a very good collection of the Turtles' biggest hits. Their lite, pop-rock was fun to listen too when I was a kid and still is! While some of the lyrics may not be the most profound, their music is enjoyable. My favorites are the classic "Happy Together", "You Baby," "She'd Rather Be With Me," "Elenore," and "It Ain't Me Babe."
Happy Together..........2007-02-03
I'm a fan of 60's music. "Happy Together" is one of those songs of my elementary school days. I rate this classic collection five stars!!
Cooking Turtles.......2006-11-10
These guys were great in the sixties.....Now those of us who once drifted away have come back and there we find the Turtles. Still sounding as good as they did back then...........it was great to run into these guys again...
Feel good hits from the 60's.......2006-11-06
These are the essential Feel-Good hits from the 60's. This cd features most of the Turtles happy songs. There are a couple of minor hits missing, but they're hardly missed from this collection. The Turtles had the great talent of producing happy, playful songs (Happy Together) as well as meaningful music (Eve of Destruction). The music of the 60's is definitely represented in this greatest hits collection.

This is a wonderful collection for those who remember the term "golden oldies". There are plenty of memories--whether real or perceived--in this extensive set. The perfect musical gift for that 60 year-old uncle you never thought could have been cool once. If you liked the soundtrack for "American Graffiti", this is right up your street.

The third low-tech, high-impact recording from the Akron, Ohio, duo is once again a loud and lively confirmation that passion, not precision, is what the blues is all about. With Dan Auerbach's insistent, abrasive guitar tone and drummer Patrick Carney's violent percussion workouts, the Black Keys' sound thrashes about with industrial-strength garage-band energy, but it also connects directly to the core sensibilities of the original blues creators with its primal expressions of pain and pride. With Auerbach shouting out the vocals the duo rocks hard in its stripped-down, ragged glory mode on Hendrix-influenced shredders like "10 A.M. Automatic" and "The Desperate Man," the fuzzed-out "Till I Get My Way," and the surprisingly swinging "Just Couldn't Tie Me Down." But it also delivers the same emotional intensity in a less frantic form on the moody mini-masterpiece "The Lengths." And, for all the justifiable fascination with the out-of-control excitement of the duo's punkish instrumental approach, the group continues to excel at songcraft, a talent expressed both in its own material and in its ability to recognize and expand the disguised merits of lesser-known cover songs. It follows a previous Beatles rarity recording with a nod to the Kinks this time via a personalized cover of "Act Nice and Gentle," probably the last thing the Black Keys would ever be accused of being. --Michael Point

nice blues set.......2007-03-19
Recordings on this album doesn't sound as well as Chulahoma, but the set is very good overall.
A beautiful album.......2007-01-16
If you like any old school bluesy rock this album will find its place in your heart. Seriously it's one of the best albums I've heard from any new band well any band that's relatively new. by far their best album to date. it's just hard hitting and makes you want to rock out!!! you'll love it it rocks. it's very gritty and the songs are all memorable! check it out. I've suggested it to all of my friends and they all get addicted to it as well. you won't be disappointed. cheers
Bluesy garage rock with a punch.......2006-12-15
Imagine the Rolling Stones up to and including Let It Bleed mixed with the White Stripes but with a soulfull lead singer that channels late sixties, early seventies rock vocal stylings. Now add some fuzzed out bluesy guitar and slide and you'd have an approximation of the Black Keys' sound. They have just the right amount of "slop" to their sound, ie any more and they would stink, any less and they wouldn't be as charming. But really the best thing about these guys is the songwriting which is emotional and melodic with a good amount of bluesy grit and feel. This is rock before it was called "classic". The only thing that mars the cd is the crappy, er, "lo-fi" recording, but what do you want from two guys from Ohio who recorded in a rubber factory? This is the first recording I've heard by these guys and I'm convinced, good stuff.
Wow, hard to believe!.......2006-12-09
Hello World,
I seen the cover and the images in the CD case and thought this should be a total dump!!! These two guys look like they design pocket protectors! Man, was I wrong. Totally wrong! Singer/guitarist sounds like a real down an out 40 year old delta bluesman and the drummer redifines high hat work. All from Ohio for Gods sake, I never would have believed it myself. Very blues but very fresh blues, yes? Sooooo smooth. The only good thing from the movie Rest Stop was the discovery of this band. "Keep me clean, keep me warm, keep my soul away from harm." Rock on world!!!
Rock Out.......2006-08-14
This is the only Black Keys CD I have listened to, though it will not be the last. It was great on my latest road trip. It rocks with a fresh, raw sound from start to finish. 70's blues rock meets White Stripes ~ Rolling Stones from the 70's. There are so many "alternative" sounding bands, it is nice to hear some unbridled bluesy emotion in music. Create some space in your living room and get out your air guitar for this one.

Worked for us!.......2007-07-15
If you are desperate enough that you have started the search for a "soothing sounds" cd, make this purchase. It is not a guarantee that your child will calm but it sure works for my very very fussy 4 month old. I originally bought this cd because my son hated riding in the car. It made the shortest trip dreadful! At home, we used the vacuum to calm him so I figured I would try this. As soon as my son would start to fuss in the car, I would put the cd in and he would nod off to sleep --- it really worked!! Now, I use it as part of our bedtime routine and it has helped my son to relax for bedtime as well --- he previously would fight it. So if you are on the fence about buying this cd, it is definitely worth trying.
Great CD With One Tiny Drawback.......2007-07-06
We got this CD for our fussy little one to help her sleep at night. The CD is really good quality and all the tracks are well recorded. We found that our little one likes the jet engine track the best (who knew!?). The only small problem is that each track has a "fade in" and "fade out" for a few seconds (where the track slowly gets louder at the beginning or softer, fading to silent at the end). This creates a pretty long (relatively speaking) space with no sound if you put one track on repeat as we do. I could see this sudden slience waking some little ones. Luckily unless there just happens to be a loud noise during the lull, ours sleeps on through it. But overall, it does what it says it will - helps our little one sleep uninterupted - and that is the most important thing!
Great Sound Quality.......2007-06-27
I bought Soothing Sounds for Sleep CD because my son is a very light sleeper. He would wake up to the slightest little noise. I turn up the volume to the Highway Hum, put it on repeat, and he sleeps through the phone ringing, people talking, even the doorbell!
All of the sounds are very realistic sounding. this CD could even be used for older children or adults that need help staying asleep! Very soothing!
Sounds for Sleep.......2007-05-30
This CD has been EXCELLENT for my baby. I have used it since he was about a month old. It will sooth him instantly when he cries. He also can tell it is bedtime by hearing the CD. My mother tried to put him to sleep one evening and she said she tried several CD's everytime she put one on he wiggled even more until she put on Hush Little Baby. Put this CD on repeat for the night and you can finally get some rest!!!
Husband loves this.......2007-05-27
Whenever my husband has any issues getting our little one to settle down he plops this cd into the player. It works like a charm. I love the cute titles of the tracks.

Album Description
After a meteoric rise to fame as the leader of the Tijuana Brass, one of the most successful groups of the '60s, Herb Alpert focused on running A&M Record's, the indie powerhouse he had founded with partner Jerry Moss. His second artistic journey began with the release of "Rise," a sultry dance instrumental, in 1979. It became the biggest hit of his career, winning a Grammy and climbing to number one on the Billboard chart, making him the only recording artist to have a number one record as a vocalist and as an instrumentalist. Alpert and his nephew Randy "Badazz" Alpert, who had cowritten "Rise," created an entire album around his new, laidback sound, and Rise, the album, was born, topping the charts and providing a significant new chapter to Alpert's already accomplished career.
Customer Reviews:
Herb Albert 'Rise' At Last!.......2007-06-14
I was hoping when the original CD of this album went out of print a remaster would follow soon and it did. This album supervised by Mr.Albert himself contains not only a fat liner booklet but a remastering sound so vivid it will simply blow you away!As for the music itself, being that 'Rise' is Herb's big comeback he did everything in his power to beef up his sound and make it contemporary;what that really means is Herb Albert brings in members of the Crusaders for a huge sound that embraces modern pop,jazz-funk and a lot of disco. The open fanfare of "1980" does showcase one fact;Albert has not elected to alter his trumpet style one bit despite the extremely produced music. And then we're onto the title song everybody knows-again given new life here by the GREAT sound!"Behind The Rain" finds him in full on 4/4 disco beat mode, complete with all the big strings that usually come with it.The real fine for funk fans on this album though has GOT to be "Rotation"-now this is almost as pure a "rare groove" as you can get, with little more then a brooding funk bass synth pulse backing up Albert's dramatic trumpet solo-next to the title song it's probably one of the finest tunes on the album.Along with a couple more returns into the disco relm, including one with a lite reggae influence the catchy "Love Is",the only vocal tune on the album appears and the album ends with a funky cover of The Crusaders "Street Life".Herb Albert proceeded to smooth out his sound on his releases after this recording but 'Rise' is a pivitol moment in his career. And well worth investigating.
"RISE" -- Remastered and Expanded!.......2007-06-03
Finally, the Herb Alpert Signature Series continues. We didn't get CDs of TIJUANA BRASS VOLUME 2, WARM, or THE BRASS ARE COMIN' but they have been made available in digitally remastered form on Apple iTunes. Not counting compilations, the next 6 albums chronologically would be SUMMERTIME, YOU SMILE-THE SONG BEGINS, CONEY ISLAND, JUST YOU & ME, HERB ALPERT/HUGH MASEKELA, and THE MAIN EVENT/LIVE, all origially issued from 1970 to 1978. Instead, they've skipped ahead to 1979 and Herb's big comeback hit, RISE.
This CD is another high quality reissue in the Signature Series. As far as improved sound over the previous CD issue, there is no comparison. "Rise" and "Rotation" even sound remarkably better than they did on DEFINITIVE HITS which wasn't mastered all that many years ago. The drums and fanfare on "1980" come barrelling out of the speakers to let you know up front that there are some serious sonic improvements on this new edition of the album. On "Rise" the voices from the first bass break are much more audible, on "Rotation" the opening percussion has an echo that I've never been able to distinguish before. It gives the intro to the song a bounce that only improves upon what was already my favorite track on the album. Louis Johnson's bass on "Love Is" is much more pronounced -- it really restores the snap to Johnson's slap and the whole track sounds much fresher. There's too many things going on in "Aranjuez" to discuss, but they all sound better now due to a first rate remastering job. As the crazy-mad-one-star-reviewer pointed out earlier, Alpert did resequence the album, swapping "Street Life" with "Aranjuez". This keeps the orginal "Aranjuez" track from being too close to the bonus track remix though, and personally, I think the order of the songs works just fine. The new version of "Aranjuez" is listed as a 2007 dance mix but there really isn't a whole lot that's been changed on the track and I have to agree with Crazy-mad-one-star-reviewer once again when he says that the track doesn't seem all that modern dance-wise. But there are some noticeable differences -- the Spanish guitar intro has been cut and the drums have been remixed to the point where it doesn't scream "Disco!" as much as the '79 original. It's a good mix and I think I may like it as much, maybe even a little more, than the original version. The other bonus track is a new version of "Rotation". I originally thought they had included a '79/'80 era dance version of the song but this version sounds like it would be right at home on the WHIPPED CREAM RE-WHIPPED album along with "Lemon Tree" and "Ladyfingers". At any rate, it's a great version and I think fans of the original will like it.
I always thought RISE was a great album and really deserved all of its success. With this reissue, I think it's become an even better album.
Herb's Comeback Classic!!.......2007-06-02
It's great to see Herb's masterpiece get the remastered treatment is so richly deserves. "Rise" is one of the greatest instrumental singles of all time. It is as refreshing to hear on the radio now as it was back when it hit #1 on the pop charts in October of 1979. The entire album holds up surprisingly well. And the other review posted at amazon trashing it is clearly written by a non-music lover with little awareness of what truely sexy music is...Rise is so contagious, so infectious, and so groovy that it is literally impossible not to shake your booty while listening. This is dance/jazz music for grown ups who know great hooks and catchy melodies when they hear them. The two bonus mixes are rather dated and don't really hold up well next to the current dance scene. But DJs with any talent or imagination can recognize that the original tracks are full of great funky grooves that are still relavent nearly 30 years later. Now we just need to see more post-Rise albums get remastered...please!
