World of Noise

A triumph of Northwestern indie-rock, Everclear's debut album was made for a mere $400 and released on Tim/Kerr Records before Capitol snapped the group up in wake of flannelmania. (Sonically, it's better than Nirvana's Bleach which cost a relatively extravagant $200 more.) And while musical simplicity is part of the band's genius--guitars grind and spew distortion while the rhythm section hammers the beat into submission--there's nothing simplistic about bandleader Art Alexakis's lyrics. "You wonder why I live like this, man, you just won't understand / I won't give in, I'm not like that," he sings in "Loser Makes Good," a song about convictions and staying true to your dreams--which could have been written by Garth Brooks if it didn't also contain the line "I hate waking up, it means that I have to die again." "World of Noise" is somewhat less listener-friendly than its big budgeted successors, Sparkle and Fade and So Much for the Afterglow, but it's a clear indication of why Everclear managed to survive while the other Nirvana-be's fell by the wayside. --Daniel Durchholz --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

In an ever changing indie music landscape, it's nearly impossible to stand out or be unique...while at the same time being worth listening too. Enter Malajube.

While the entire CD is an eclectic blend (on par with Wolf Parade or Clap Your Hands...only with more accessible vocals) sung in a sort of dirty French, Trompe-L'Oeil (trick the eye) will amaze you with a quality and energy that transcends whether or not you understand what they're saying. Take the song "La Russe"...have they just invented French-Grime? doesn't matter because it's over before you know it and they're moving on to equally invigorating territory.

Let's face it. There are people out there who get this CD simply to say that they own French Indie Rap Rock. Lucky for them, and all of us, it's more than a gimmick. It's really really good.

5 out of 5 stars Great listen.......2007-01-15

This cd is great. I'd heard about 3 songs before buying it and the rest of the songs measure up to what I was expecting.

5 out of 5 stars unusual and refreshing, to franco and anglo ears alike.......2006-12-17

The Dears, The Unicorns, Stars, Metric and Godspeed You! Black Emperor all enjoyed free publicity from The Arcade Fire's 2004 indie rock grand slam, "Funeral", when all eyes turned to Canada.

"Trompe l'oeil" is the album for those of you who enjoyed the explosion of the Montreal scene, but wondered, "Where's the French?"

Let's face it, good Canadian francorock is hard to come by. Canadian French format radio's been pumping out the same uninspired prog rock for years. And the market seems to be getting smaller. To capture a bigger potential fanbase, a lot of francophones choose to sing in English.

Finally, wih "Trompe l'oeil," we've got French radio play to get excited about. Malajube reminds me at times of The Unicorns, Modest Mouse, and Muse, all while finding a new sound that's truly interesting enough to stand up to the English Quebec scene.

Even if you don't understand French, you will appreciate the energetic playing, the clever rhythms and harmonies, and the tender whisper to rebel yell singing.

Start here. Then check out some other fantastic francorock albums like 60's yé-yé inspired "Dejeuner sur l'herbe" by Les Breastfeeders and burlesque meets The Good the Bad and the Ugly in "Western Shanghai" by Call Me Poupée.

I hate when people discribe music. This album rocks. I like it and all my friends like it.

5 out of 5 stars World Of Noise.......2005-06-23

This is the second best Everclear album and my absolute favorite. This is there grungiest album and has amazing lyrics, just read them in the booklet. Every song is amazing and the album is set up geniusly. It may not be the best recording production, but that raw, staticky soundis awesome. Some people will tell you to buy their best album, Sparkle And Fade, first, but I highly recommend you get this one first. This is the most anti-sell-out album I've ever heard, and it's coming from a band that sold out big time later. If you get this first, it will make Sparkle And Fade sound a lot better, even if it's great already. Here is a song-by-song analysis in my opinion:

Your Genius Hands: A great first track. It starts off the album with a bit of distortion and then an awesome guitar line. "I have seen you shake, I know what it cost you, I have heard your work, I am big on your noise..." I never got a grip on exactly what this is about, but it might be about a guitarist he admires, "I long to shake your genius hands." *highlight*

Sick And Tired: This is a deep, distorted song about possibly suicide... and the end is really cool.

The Laughing World: This song is grinding and wicked. The riff sounds like something going forward then suddenly pulling back. Another confusing song lyrically ("like a burning car in the sun, we flame for all in plain view"), but still a mild headbanger that rocks (if your the sorta person who does that to punk music). *highlight*

Fire Maple Song: This is the only song on the greatest hits album, and it's about Art's brother dying, and Alexakis sings about this true experience with passionate lyrics. It's soft and beautiful, but has Art almost screaming "I...can't...smile!" during the chorus. The first part of the song is about memories of the brothers spending time together under a maple tree as kids, with lyrics like "listen to grandma sing those country songs, she said the maple turns to fire every four years, we'd lay under the tree and watch the autumn come around," while near the end you hear "Now we're so far away, call eachother once a year, just around the holidays...I can't believe this letter that says you died, I think I'll go back to the house in North Carolina and lay in the backyard, get drunk and let the leaves just bury me..." A great song. *highlight*

Pennsylvania Is...: This song is about the evils of the anti-abortion laws. All states except New York used to have these laws, and this song is specifically about...you guessed it...Pennsylvania. And if you're wondering where there's ... at the end of the, the word missing is "wrong!", which is yelled at the end of the song. It's one of the most meaningful songs on the album. *highlight*

Nervous And Weird: A loud song about a deteriorating relationship. Alexakis uses this theme commonly in many future songs, but this song belongs on this album due to it's unique sound. Nevertheless another great song.

Malevolent: Another meaningful song, about a guy who hits his girlfriend when she tries to break up with him.

Sparkle: This song is amazing. It's one of those songs where it's hard to tell who it's talking about...some claim it's about Kurt Cobain, which is cool, but I have another theory. First of all, the song is clearly about a sell-out musician that Art is displaying his dissapointment with. The person is described as bleached blonde hair and plaid clothes, etc, obviously talking about a blonde grunge junkie. It could be about Kurt becoming something that Art didn't like, but what did Art do later? Doesn't he now have bleach blonde hair? Did he not sell out? I think this song could be about Art talking to his future self, talking about his fear that he will become this sort of person. As a friend said to me about this, sometimes our biggest fears come true. Anyway, just a theory. This song starts off with what I think of as a shaky chord. This also happens later in the song, except it's cooler because Art yells this time. *highlight*

Trust Fund: A very distorted song. I believe this was a Colorfinger song. Anyway, pure grunge.

Loser Makes Good: ANOTHER very meaningful song, about a homeless man criticizing, complaining, but ultimately, as in the title, making good with his words. *highlight*

Invisible: My favorite song on the whole album, about having AIDS. There isn't one line of lyrics in the song that isn't absolutely stunning: "I just can't believe that AIDS is just some act of god...no one will reach for me, no one will touch my skin...I will accept my pain, I don't deserve to die like this, no one deserves to die like this...sometimes I get so mad, I just want to break the world...I will not be denied, I will not be ignored, I'm real I won't go away, I am not invisible anymore..." *highlight*

Evergleam: Probably my favorite last track on all their albums, this is a happy, upbeat summary to a very emotional album. It always puts me in a good mood. So concludes a grunge masterpiece by my favorite band. *highlight*

Buy this album! :-)

5 out of 5 stars For What It's Worth.......2004-12-24

This is a well done debut from Everclear considering the circumstances in which it was recorded. Now, this album is no hit after hit album, there are misses, but that doesn't overshadow the standout tracks. 'Your Genius Hands' is an awesome opening track that is packed full of fury, which sets the tone of 'World of Noise'. We see hints of later Alexakis-genius in 'Loser Makes Good', 'Pennsylvania Is...' and 'Sparkle', but the true, raw emotion isn't felt until you hear 'Fire Maple Song', which to date is one of Alexakis' best songs.

5 out of 5 stars #1 Everclear FAN.......2004-08-04

I first listened to World Of Noise in the summer of '93, just months after its release! My LIFE LONG BEST FRIEND/uncle-in-law, Randy introduced me to Everclear's music. Their music is most attractive because they simply apply their own life experiences to it. Stuff that I AM SURE we can all relate to. They take really bad, horrible instances and transform them into soothing, comforting melodic art!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2003-08-25

How did Art Alexakis, frontman of Colorfinger, one of the greatest alternative punk bands in the world, go on to form a band that was even heavier, and then turn them into MTV fodder? This is an album that can stand with Soundgarden's "Ultramega OK" and Mudhoney's debut. Art's vocals are angry and tourtured by the tribulations that were happening to him at the time, not by the memories of those tribulations like the "Learning How to Smile" album. If you enjoy "Heroin Girl," "When It All Goes Wrong Again," "Twistinside" (a Colorfinger song by the way) or old proto-grunge like Mudhoney or older Nirvana, absolutely check this out. Nirvana's "Bleach" is a good album. This is better. This is emotional, hard-hitting rock and roll.

Marisa Monte is one of the great female vocalists to emerge from MPB (Brazilian popular music), and this part-studio, part-live offering goes a long way in capturing all of the facets of her style, from the softer tones of "Blanco" to a rhythmic, energetic cover of George Harrison's "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)." Monte is nothing if not eclectic, leaping from Caetano Veloso's wonderful "De Noite Na Cama" to the '50s Brazilian standard "O Xote das Meninas." Sympathetic production from longtime collaborator Arto Lindsay adds a great deal, but at the end of the day it's Monte's voice and powerful personality that are stamped all over this disc. The 11 live tracks are particular standouts because of the relentless drive behind them. Both sexy and sensual, Monte never needs to belt it out; her slinkiness is all that's needed to keep things purring along. A true star. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars Superb beyond belief.......2005-02-05

I will never forget the night I introduced my brother to Marisa's music. I left him babysitting my children and gave him "Rose and Charcoal" to keep him occupied ... came home several hours later to find him weeping tears of ecstasy (I am not kidding) and a total Marisa convert. That was years ago and he and I are still die-hard Marisa fans. This album here is one of my favourite all time albums, along with Rose and Charcoal. Marisa is even more stunning live than studio, believe it or not. The variety of music on this album is amazing, and every track delights and intrigues. All are absolute works of art, but some just blow your mind, they are so beautiful, and reach somewhere deep into your soul. Always read the translations of her lyrics because they are delightful. Well ... sometimes a bit morbid, like "Bem Leve" which is about coffins, if I remember correctly, but er, delightfully morbid! Read them and you will see! To anyone who samples Marisa and loves what they hear, just buy all her albums and be done with it ... you will never regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Live Tracks.......2004-01-07

This is a cd that has recordings from Marisa Monte's shows, and before the live performance, has some "original" cuts. I remember when this came out, some people were disappointed because it wasn't an entirely new album (this one came after Rose & Charcoal). But in 2000 Monte released I "Memories Chronicles and Declarations of Love" which had mixed reviews.

I love this release, the live performance is very spirited and very fresh. "De Noite Na Cama", "Panis et Circenses ", "Beija Eu", "Menina Danca" and "O Xote das Meninas" are definitely my favorite tracks from the live portion. Her voice is soft, percise and has that distinct sound that makes it... her! Not all of the original studio tracks got me, but the first two songs were pretty cool. I still listen to this album today. What's interesting... the import of this release doesn't have the cartoon sketches "censored" on the cover like this one.

I'd definitely recommend this to the Marisa Monte fan. You have to hear some of the live interpretations of songs from "Mais" and "Rose & Charcoal". Also, if you like this maybe you should check out Daniela Mercury's "Eletrica", a live performance of some of that Bahia singer's music.

5 out of 5 stars the best of the best.......2002-07-17

As anyone will quickly see from scanning the amazon reviews of her albums, Marisa has a fanatical following, and deservedly so. She is one of the all-time great Brazilian artists, in the pantheon with Jobim and Gal Costa. This album is important for a couple of reasons. The live songs are distinct from their studio versions and in some cases better. "Xote das Meninas" is the best case in point. On her debut album, still unsure of her artistic identity, Marisa gave this song an odd, jazz-inflected treatment that simply doesn't work. Here, it gets a straight ahead "roots" treatment and the result is fantastic. Indeed, what this record does is illustrate Marisa's singular contribution to Brazian populair music (MPB); the sublime marriage of traditional north-eastern folk music to a pop sensibility. Danca da solidao is another example , a beautiful, modern rendition of a Paulinho de Viola standard. This album also benefits from a high end stereo system -- the production on both the studio and live discs is impecable. The concert recording is the best live production I have ever heard. For those wanting an introduction to Marisa, start here, though you'll buy all the other albums in the end.

5 out of 5 stars A soulful display of outstanding Brazilian music........2002-03-17

This album seems to, more than any other, encapsulate Marisa's truly remarkable career. Her voice is magical, evoking so much deep and passionate feelings in her songs. The song "Arrepio" summarizes what I came away feeling after listening to this album (tingling with pleasure). The songs really make you feel connected and drawn in. These songs are not strictly for dancing, you can sit down and listen to them or dance, the choice is yours. One thing is certain you will be refreshed and energized by this music.

5 out of 5 stars Children of God.......2005-10-21

Children of God represented a progression in The Swans' sound. Some of the abrasiveness from their earlier albums is still here, but this album also leans towards the ethereal and abstract. At the time, Gira was obviously tired of The Swans being interpreted as a one dimensional act. Filth and Cop were abrasive and quite unfriendly records, albeit intellectual and beautiful in their own iconoclastic way. However, The Swans were always misunderstood. Filth and Cop made a strong impression on people. Even to this day these two records are infamous and, sadly, sometimes they overshadow the rest of the band's catalog. Gira even stated that clueless metal heads would show up at old Swans gigs to "rock out" and mosh to the music. He hated this kind of behavior and clearly saw The Swans as a more introspective band. The Swans were never intended to be party music, or music that everyone could easily enjoy. In reality, The Swans were a rejection of the corporate driven music industry. When they started attracting these elements, Gira realized that The Swans were becoming too easy to define and categorize. The art and the music was no longer challenging, it was becoming more commonplace and acceptable, even cliché. He realized that he was falling into a category. And in order to remedy this fault, he had to push The Swans to evolve into something higher, something more sophisticated and multidimensional. Children of God was the first step in this direction. And for The Swans, it was also one of their finest, most definite moments.

Children of God is the very first Swans album to incorporate acoustic guitar. Most of the songs are atmospheric. They are usually made up of a single riff that is stretched out for the entire duration of a song. It is simple, yet amazingly effective and hypnotic. Jarboe also plays a larger role in The Swans' music for the very first time. Her voice works well and adds to the hypnotic element of the music.

Other than that, Children of God is an interesting album. Gira was influenced by the charisma of televangelists. Throughout this album he is shouting in the same way as televangelists do during sermons, and it is interesting to hear some of the same things that these people say set to apocalyptic music. It is not overtly blasphemous, just an interesting experiment of comparing rock musicians to televangelists, who often times wild up crowds in the same fashion as rock musicians do. I like the fact that this album is not overtly blasphemous and that it looks at Christianity from a different perspective - more of a social conditioning perspective than a dogmatic one.

This is essential for anyone interested in The Swans.

5 out of 5 stars Out of this world.......2005-04-22

This 2-disc set combines Swans' 1987 masterpiece with various tracks from the first two albums (Shame, Humility, Revenge and Blood, Women, Roses) of their side project, The World Of Skin. The third album, Ten Songs For Another World, is not represented here.

Disc 1 is the original Children of God plus one extra track, I'll Swallow You. Only the first track New Mind and Beautiful Child are really harsh; elsewhere the softer side of Swans emerge, where the mood is mostly one of resignation or sorrow. The music is very atmospheric with innovative arrangements, especially the song Like A Drug (Sha La La La). The theme seems to be the futility of love as expressed in songs like Our Love Lies, You're Not Real Girl, Real Love and Blind Love.

Disc 2, the World Of Skin tracks, sometimes has Jarboe as the torch singer like on Cry Me A River and The Man I Love, while at other times her and Michel Gira's voices perfectly complement each other in eerie harmony. My favorites include Breathing Water and the awesome lullaby Blood On Your Hands.

Fans of dark, atmospheric rock music will love this double album. It explores the emotional side that can also occasionally be found in the work of artists like e.g. Meredith Monk, Mercury Rev, Nick Drake, Nico, Velvet Underground, John Cale etc. or in sacred medieval music. But here, it's found in a more extreme form. This is gothic with real substance. Swans are an acquired taste, but once you understand the music you're addicted for life.

5 out of 5 stars My first time hearing Swans.......2004-07-23

I remember reading an interview in a book on women in rock a several years ago I had bought in my college days. Swans' other half Jarboe was in the book. Since then I had been meaning to check out Swans' music but I just didn't know where to begin. The other day I was at my local library. I found a copy of "Children of God/World of Skin" so I thought this was the perfect time tto listen to their music. I immediately loved what I heard on both cds. I was easily reminded of some of my favorite darkwave bands like Black Tape For a Blue Girl, Lycia, and Clan of Xymox. The music is dark and dissonant. Michael Gira's dark, haunting vocals reminds me of both Sam Rosenthal (of Black Tape fame) and Voltaire (maybe a smidgeon). Jarboe has an equally stunning voice. I especially love it when she starts to wail like a banshee. There is a cold, empty, mechanical feel to the music but at the same time there is something comforting that I get from it that I can't put my finger on. Some of the music is melodic and some can be very experimental and very minimalistic. It's a nice antithesis to the commercial junk that radio plays into the ground.

5 out of 5 stars The utter dark.......2004-01-23

Swans have done so much for music, effecting music itself on an unconcious level. You can hear the eager strife of so many bands to capture what came naturally to Gira and Jarboe. It would truely depend on how well one knows music to give a decent description, but far more then knowledge it takes an open mind to love any band even close to Swans.

This album is a cold, soothing, beautiful and dark album and truely amongst thier greatests. While Swans began with Michael Gira without Jarboe and as something so aggressive and heavy with anger thier devouring and honest message had always been wakeing. In this album you can see how the patience and the maturity found the message and the evolution began to flow much faster and with not only the mind but the heart and the soul.

Swans would later go on to warm thier sound even more so with "Various Failures"(the inbetween albums are near impossible to find for now) but still you can hear the solidity and fluidity that never left them for a moment.

Swans music for this album was a mixture of heavily pounding beats at slow to mid tempo violins, viola's acoustic and electric guitars and synthsizers and various obscurities inbetween. Thier music will incant a mixture for the listener of gothic and american-folk music... early Industrial drum and synth patterns(remniscant of Coil, Clock DVA and Einsturzende Neubaten) and the ethereal and gorgeous ambiance of Dead Can Dance.

If you should happen to like anythng by Swans do yourself the explicit favor of purchasing "Various Failures"(my favorite), "The Great Annihilator" and this brilliant album as well.

Album Description

The legendary DON CABALLERO has re-emerged! Inarguably one of the most celebrated, influential and innovative bands in recent times, DON CABALLERO is the vanguard of progressive, instrumental music. With World Class Listening Problem, its first full-length album in almost 5 years, "DON CAB" proves once again that they are head and shoulders above their peers. The bands powerful, percussive-heavy sonic advance is more dense, more expansive, and burns with a newfound urgency. World Class Listening Problem is prime DON CABALLERO and an indispensable addition to the illustrious "DON CAB" canon.

3 out of 5 stars holding pattern(s)?.......2006-07-01

I'll admit that I felt somewhat skeptical about the release of this album when I initially heard of its release. Could it be Don Cab without the original members all present? Was it blatant cashing in on the band's history? Does Damon Che actually possess eight arms? Happily: yes; no; jury still out, respectively. I enjoy the abum, the protean elements that comprise both Don Cab and Creta Bourzia are all present and form a rather tight straightforward unit more reminiscent of For respect..., rather than II, in my humble opinion. Opening salvo "MMMM, acting" is arresting, its three distinct movements mapping out what this iteration of the Don is capable of. "Lowered the twin", "Palm trees", and the title track are all excellent additions to the Don Cab canon, sleek and relentless, but" Savage Composition" is by far the centerpiece of the album, epic without being overbearing, and closest to the spirit of previous efforts. The rest of the album is average, and could possibly have done with some editing, But "bozzo jazz" is a wonderful closer, spacey freak out rockiness abound. The best part of the ensemble Is Che's skinwork, of course, and the way the drums were recorded only enhances this: dry and very clean, almost jazz like in its economy. So, buy it and enjoy it for what it is, and I think we'll see something more expansive from this unit once they really have some time to progress. Embrace the prog, people!

4 out of 5 stars excellent for most, average for don cab.......2006-06-15

I am going to avoid discussing my dismay over the lineup change or other 'politic' formalities regarding this album (The new players seem to attempt a kind of replicated sound of the old players. I miss the old players). I am just going to say that, although this album is very good by anyone's standards, it is not the leap into new brain-bending territory that all prior Don Caballero albums have been (From II on, anyhow). In fact, it seems like an attempt to summarize all of the basic functions of the earlier don cab; to distill the unique qualities of each album into one. It does this without charting new territory at all. This does not make it a bad album at all, but I personally was just a tiny little bit disappointed that they didn't make another album that I would want to listen to for months on end. Their last two albums, What Burns and especially American Don, made all other music seem obsolete and sophomoric, in a way. After those albums, this one was downright predictable. On the other hand, If you found American Don and/or What Burns to be a little too out there, but you really love II, then you will thoroughly enjoy this album because it contains the most straight up "rocking out" that Don Cab has come up with since II.

3 out of 5 stars Please enter a title for your review.......2006-05-25

I think it's total b.s. for them to use the don cab name when the drummer is the only remaining member. Some of the music's pleasant, some of it isn't. None of it is anything original or progressive. The majority of it is loose and abrasive, reminding me more of Oxes or Don Cab's 2 than either of Don Cab's last two albums, although there are a couple of points where they achieve some melodic intricacy comparable to American Don, those being the highlights for me. At some points it's impressive how the Creta Bourzia guys replicate some of the more subtle details of the former Don Cab's playing techniques, but on the other hand it's kinda pathetic that they want to do that. Overall i think this album is tarnishing Don Cab's good name with inferior compositonal focus, and creating the annoyance of having to add "but not that new album" when you say you're a fan of the band.

5 out of 5 stars Apparently Damon Che IS Don Caballero.......2006-05-24

I don't know whether you call me a true Don Caballero fan or not. I own most of the albums, but I've only seen them live once. It might have mattered that Damon Che was the only continuing member, if this new album was no good -- but it is one the best Caballero albums period!! It's tight, muscular... and Damon is an avalanche on the drums. I absolutley cannot wait to seem them perform this material live! Every Caballero album has a different feel to it. As far as I am concerned this is one of the most accessible, and it still clearly employs the Don Caballero technique.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2006-05-24

For the readers of this review, I only own "For Respect", and "Don Cab 2," so my scope of the Don Cab collection is somewhat limited. All that aside I really enjoyed this CD. I'm not a big fan of "Math Rock," (It is somewhat monotonous and annoying, but that is my limited opinion.) Gone from this CD are the one note screeches and discordant "melodies" of Don cab 2 (I could only stand to listen to songs 1, 3, the first half of 4 and 8 on that album.) WCLP is more melodic and cohesive, however it still has some of the old Don Cab sensibilities. This is one of the few albums that I listened to all the way through and then listened to again. I would recommend this to any instrumental music lover, however it may turn off the true Don Cab fan. And that is my one and a half cents.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Hold it at Arm's Length.......2006-10-16

Before I start, if you are not a little bit familiar with Merzbow, I can only wonder how you got here. Nevertheless, the genre he represents is "noise" but it's not noise of a minimalist sort (usually) and not noise of a banging on the trash-cans sort (usually). If you started somewhere in the vicinity of white noise, plus sheer pulsing, you might have an inkling. Wide frequency ranges, throbbing squelches, subharmonic oscillations, feedback, distortion as thick as gauze stuffed into a fatal puncture wound, frequently long and relentless, but not unvarying tracks. Make no mistake, this is the opposite of minimalist--it is saturation, maximalist. Relentless.

Second, the two things I gather from reading the reviews are--fans compare this to other albums (and generally find others better), while others (whose opinions are given freely) feel compelled to condemn this disc with one star. This doesn't seem especially helpful, unless you are already a Merzbow initiate, in which case, you should know that given his truly prodigious output, comparing this noise to other noise is far more obviously an exercise in taste than it might be when rating the albums of more conventional artists. In other words, what does this album itself have to offer?

To begin with, noting that this is "not for the weak" or that it amounts to an aural assault makes the disc into something elitistly precious. Far more than most classical music, and even most pop music, nearly anyone could listen to this and "understand" it--for the same reason that one will start noting patterns in white noise if stared at. Beyond this, however, this disc is intensely sublime--that is, it is beautiful in the same way that the overwhelming grandeur of the mountains are beautiful, or that thunderheads are. It is beauty in a gargantuan, awe-full guise. There is also tremendous, visceral power here.

Around 15'30" of "Iron, Glass, Blocks, and White," for instance, after a fuzz-crush that seems to choke the sound into silence, a rolling, cycling alarm sound goes off, while a really yummy tube-amp note throbs and wavers like a candle in the middle of everything, surrounded by splatters of slashing noise. The background then takes on a long, sustained handsome note that throbs with the tube-amp noise. Distortion everywhere. Then it all fades away. One could nearly describe the passage in terms of conventional beauty here, almost.

The beginning of "Degradation of Tapes," as well, starts with three seconds of distorting flanging and then just crushingly smashes in with a distortion echo that twists up to a delay rate of nearly zero. It is a beginning, an opening gesture, that you will not find in popular music, progressive rock, or classical music even in almost all of its most avant-garde practitioners.

From there, a forefronted white noise that is like sitting front row center to a blast furnace blazes in front of slow-flanging distortion behind. The foreground then spasms from white noise, VCF shifts and god knows what else while a gorgeous crystalline solo note skitters around in the background. After about 2'15", the foreground becomes something like a broken staticy radio, just before the pipe truck crashes at 130 mph inside of the long, long echoing tunnel. Etc.

It is perhaps unfortunate that Merzbow is known for doing "noise." An oboe makes noise also. Although from a musical standpoint, it is not necessary to distinguish between musical noise, i.e., orchestras and Merzbow alike, and noise noise, i.e., a door slamming and footsteps receding, if nothing else, the noise that Merzbow makes can be listened to. One's attention can follow rising and falling sounds, or can get caught up in the crisscross of rising and falling sounds; one can listen to the foregorund, or very attentively try to pull out the background; one can follow and lose the various repetitions and pulses that stand in as beats; and one can, on multiple listenings, invent anew each time the "melody" that you follow as your brain wanders through the fractured crashes of white noise, distortion and panning.

In that respect, it is worth noting that 1930, if you can get through it once, particularly lends itself to being listened to again and again. One of the most interesting features of this kind of saturated noise is that it is very difficult to remember; as such, one experiences it differently almost every time. There might be other ways to accomplish this musically, but certainly it is a very interesting feature of such music. It is attention-sustaining in a way that most conventional music is not. Put another way, and rather ironically, this is not ambient background music at all. Played as such, it becomes noise of the annoying, worthless kind.

Instead, relax, put on headphones, turn it up, and experience the joy of really getting to listen to music. Ironically, this music can at times be relaxing, in the sense that it wears you out. Certainly, as one reviewer noted, it causes his thoughts to neutralize. And yes, it can be hard to listen to the whole disc all at once.

Do other Merzbow albums do this as well, or better, or worse? One would have to hear for one's self. In the meantime, 1930 is an excellent, however partial, tour through an all-engaging aural soundscape.

4 out of 5 stars listen to it drunk and high.......2006-02-18

listen to this drunk and high and you will initially laugh and say "my god, it sounds like noise/anarchy/christ has just died and is in the process of being resurrected".

after awhile, you'll say, "my god! ive never heard anything quite like it!"

then you'll give it four stars like i did.

5 out of 5 stars Highly composed and dynamic.......2006-01-12

While as loud and amelodic as reputed, Merzbow is not at all random or 'mindless feedback and noise'. 1930 is an excellent noise composition with plenty of rhythmic sounds and a lot of variation in texture and frequency. While there are no 'beats' or recognizable instruments, there are repeated patterns, and plenty of loud/soft contrast. This is my first Merzbow album and it's succeeded in getting me interested in his other work... People can say it isn't music, but it's definitely sound as art... which to me, is what music is.

1930 is the perfect example of the noise genre- sound without familiarity. You won't listen to it and hear any noise that makes you say "Oh, I know where he got that". Some of it may be sampled but he alters it beyond recognition. Because of this the overall effect of the album is one of relaxation, a sort of cleaning of the mind.

Listened to as a whole this album takes you to a cold, inhuman but not at all threatening place in the subconscious. If I'm agitated or stressed out, putting on 1930 neutralizes my feelings. The sound doesn't remind me of anything in particular, so I don't think of anything in particular when it's playing. Other people (fans) have expressed similar reactions to it. All the compositions on this album are different and well thought out, while at the same time having a spontaneous quality that lets you know it was created by a feeling, creative human being. It's a dynamic album too, there's quiet to go along with the loud.

If you find Merzbow too unpleasant, simply don't listen to it, but I don't see the point (Scott Baldwin) of posting a worthless negative review on EVERY album of his you can find. If you hate him so much there's no reason for you to have heard ALL of those albums, and you can't review albums you haven't heard.

Merzbow defines a form of art that only existed in small amounts (metal machine music, some TG) before he was around. I recommend Merzbow to those who are still interested after reading the reviews on this site. I also recommend SPK, Non and Metal Machine Music for something similar.

5 stars. This is as good as noise gets.

Have you ever heard the rattling and stomping of skateboards on a tin ramp for hours on end in an echo chamber that is a cul-de-sac? Well, after a long search I have found the match and better. I will play it on my Bose at full volume out of my window for hours. Merzbow, here we go.

5 out of 5 stars Second Chance.......2003-06-22

I was compelled to write this review after reading the other review written by "music fan" from Englewood. Children of God/World of Skin was the first Swans album I ever bought. I got it years ago, shortly after it was reissued. I didn't know much about the band, but I was an avid music collector and I had heard some good things about them. Anyway, like "music fan", I was initially really creeped out by the music. So much so, that I didn't listen to it again for 2 years. Then one day, I must've been pretty bored because I popped it into my CD changer again. And for some reason... maybe because I was too lazy to put something else in the changer... I kept it in there for the next few days. And ya know what? The music grew on me. It's dark, seductive, powerful, and often quite beautiful. Today, it's one of my favorite albums and I own most of the other albums released by the band. If you've never heard anything by Swans, this is a good place to start. (A good midpoint between their early, abrasive sound and their later experimental stuff) And if you're initially disturbed by the music... that's okay. You may not understand why anybody would CHOOSE or even WANT to listen to this band... but if you keep listening, eventually you will understand. I only wish I hadn't waited 2 years before I gave it a second chance.

5 out of 5 stars Such eerie sorrow.......2002-12-01

Disc 1 is the original Children of God plus one extra track, Iýll Swallow You. Only the first track New Mind and Beautiful Child are really harsh; elsewhere the softer side of Swans emerge, where the mood is mostly one of resignation or sorrow or both. Itýs very atmospheric with innovative instrumentation, as especially in Like A Drug (Sha La La La). The theme seems to be the futility of love as expressed in songs like Our Love Lies, Youýre Not Real Girl, Real Love and Blind Love.
Disc 2 consists of tracks from the World of Skin albums Shame, Humility, Revenge and Blood, Women, Roses. Sometimes Jarboe is the torch singer, as on Cry Me A River and The Man I Love, at other times her and Giraýs voices perfectly complement each other. My favorites include Breathing Water and the eerie lullaby Blood On Your Hands.
Fans of dark, atmospheric rock music will love this double album. It explores the dark emotion that can also occasionally be found in the work of artists like, say, Meredith Monk, Mercury Rev, Nico, Velvet Underground, John Cale etc. or in sacred medieval music. But here, itýs found in a more extreme form. This is gothic with real bite. Swans are an acquired taste, but once you understand the music, youýre addicted for life.

3 out of 5 stars Distrubing.......2002-04-26

This music is distrubing...I was terribly bothered by it and really couldn't bear to listen to it. Does that say enough? I don't have a problem with music of discord or contention such as Radiohead of Nine Inch Nails, but this is truly depressing black hole music the likes of which I hope never to hear again. I can understand how someone could appreciate what Swans do with their music, but listening to it's simply not good for my health (mental or physical). As a person from a reformed background (calvinist), I was taught to find redeeming value in almost anything. I failed to do so with Swans.
Cheers :)

5 out of 5 stars Swans albums remain avante garde after over a decade.......1998-06-11

Following their final studio album and subsequent breakup, Swans have reissued two of their greatest albums, documenting the period in their career that transformed them into a heavy, slow, and powerful noise/gloom band to the much more quiet and sorrowful duo of more recent years. M. Gira's grotesque, ragged, sadomasochistic, yet vulnerable vocals blend immaculately with Jarboe's darkly innocent lullabies and seem to reveal different aspects of the same person; a yin-yang of sorts. Swans' music reaches the listener as no other music can, touching raw emotion, horrible truth, true spirituality, and real love. CoG/WoS is a must for all true music lovers, from Industrial fans to Classical afficiandos. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars The Swans discover tunes.......2006-06-18

Once upon a time listening to the Swans was about as enjoyable as sticking knitting needles in your ears and the effect was often the same. Relentless pulverising beats without the vicarious thrill that a band like say Big Black could give you. Also without the warped humour of The Butthole Surfers, this was bleak humourless fare. Up until this album the Swans were industrial noise-nicks you lump in with Skinny Puppy and Front 242etc."Time is Money (B******)" was the rape scene in "Irreversible" set to music. Then out of nowhere came "The Burning World" and although the world view is obstensively still as bleak as ever suddenly it's set to a gorgeous lush musical landscapes. A couple of the songs actually feature la la, s. Gira goes pop. "Burning World" is The Swans in collision with The Chills while the Waterboys look on.
And goddam as Gira would say, if there isn't a little optimism in here. Opening track "The River that runs with love won't run dry" is a statement in itself. But add in the warm washes of violin and perfectly picked guitar notes with Jarboes honeyed backing vocals and you have a song so uplifting Westlife could cover it...if they had any taste ....or talent.
"Let it come down" is more like old style Swans. "I will drown in flames" sings Gira portentously in his cavernous vocals to a stumbling deluge of charcoal bass, percussion and wheezing strings. Jarboe sings a beautiful version of Steve Winwoods "Can't find my way home" backed by tabla, mournful strings and random guitar notes sprinkled like diamonds on a tar pit. The tabla provides rhythmic propulsion to "Mona Lisa(Mother Earth)" with suitably eerie backing vocals. "Saved" is another song suffused with uncharacteristic hope. It has a sumptuous melody, twinkling guitars and more opulent backing from Jarboe., who sings wonderfully again on "I Remember who you are" a string smothered ballad of fevered brow intensity. On "Jane Mary cry one tear", "Everything is a cause for sorrow" which may explain the funereal arrangement something it shares with the pitch black (She's a )Universal Emptiness", while "See no more" is two paced, starting with urgent spiky guitars and tumbling percussion until Giras vocals pull in the reins." See our sun go black because we made one mistake" he grumbles. It ends with ardent tipples of bazouki before "Goddam the Sun", a ballad of jaw dropping bleakness with contradictory fervent strokes of guitar and strings.
Overall despite the inevitable themes of death, despair and torpor this is musically a rich and textured album, with many moments and songs of outstanding beauty. Don,t let the granite faced disposition of Mr Gira fool you. Within him sit's a heart that beats in time with the rest of us. His world may be burning but he's prepared to concede that for us it may still be a place of hope and wonder.

    5 out of 5 stars A gentle masterpiece.......2005-03-24

The Burning World is infused with the spirit of author Paul Bowles as reflected on titles like Let It Come Down and the mention of "sheltering sky" in the lyrics of Saved. The album is a classic by default. The artists are of the opinion that producer Bill Laswell didn't understand what they wished to achieve, hence their low opinion of The Burning World.

I beg to differ. As far as accessibility goes, this is the one Swans album that can be enjoyed by a wide variety of people with different musical tastes - from the Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave fan to those who love atmospheric rock or eastern-influenced world music sounds.

The now defunct Swans is still my favorite band but it must be admitted that they're an acquired taste, since on various albums they have explored extreme emotions and extreme music. This gentle, melodic album still has its moments of extremity, like the devastating God Damn The Sun, where Michael Gira goes a few steps further down the road of despair than Leonard on a Cohen-type ballad.

Another breathtaking track is their interpretation of Steve Winwood's Can't Find My Way Home, hypnotically and spookily sung by Jarboe over the eerie instrumentation, as is I Remember Who You Are, which allows Jarboe's unique voice to soar into regions celestial. I also love the tuneful Saved, an evocative love song with a spiritual undertone.

To me, this is their folk album, just as their early work was an exploration of industrial/extreme heavy metal sounds, Love Of Life was powerful guitar rock and Soundtracks For The Blind was an investigation of the drone.

Judged on the quality of the material, the vocals, the overall mood, this is an enduring classic. Fans of Leonard Cohen, John Cale, Richard Thompson, Peter Murphy, Velvet Underground, Nico, Nick Drake and similar artists will do themselves a huge favor by acquiring this shimmering masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars a teriffic hated and underrated album!.......2004-05-29

even the swans themselves hate this wonderful thing.
although it can't be compared with all the amazing stuff that came after it, especially in terms of richness of arrangements, the songs and the deliveries are very, very strong indeed.
sometimes an album has to be judged WITHOUT comparison to other ones of the same artist. and this one is simply great by itself.
