Tribute albums are always suspect; classical interpretations of rock even more so--and follow-ups to the same are fraught with mediocrity. Just witness the inexplicable glut of String Quartet Tribute discs to Tool, Bruce Springsteen, and many other top-selling and cult artists. On Hold Me to This, his second run at the music of art-rock group Radiohead, classical pianist Christopher O'Riley avoids all these pitfalls. These aren't easy-listening piano renditions of Radiohead tunes, but deeply inspired, often challenging and dissonant re-imaginings. O'Riley succeeds by taking the music on its own terms. He doesn't try to make it "classical" but lets the classical nature of the music ring out. From the storming chordal overtone clusters of "There There" to the Chopinesque refrain of "The Spinning Plates," O'Riley makes you forget these songs were originally played by a raging rock band. Instead, they seem born on the keys of his piano. His "Paranoid Android" is like Conlon Nancarrow going boogie-woogie one moment and painfully, sweetly rhapsodic the next. I'm not sure how Radiohead fans will respond to this, but piano and classical listeners should rejoice. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
this has the depth you need..........2007-02-17
I don't believe you need to be ga-ga over Radiohead to enjoy this CD. This CD, it's all piano (w/o vocals) if you didn't already know that going in, will provide an even deeper appreciation of the textures & depth of the Radiohead catalog. Mr. O'Riley does takes some artistic liberties with the songs, albeit minor, but in so doing he unleashes the potential they all have. And this potential is truly staggering---some selections are nothing short of gorgeous.
Hold me to this: you WILL be floored by this CD. it's well worth the purchase.
Oddly Boring.......2006-07-16
I adore Radiohead, and really enjoy solo piano. I should love this disc, but I don't. Even though the wonderful creepiness of Radiohead is completely absent, I would be willing to chalk that up to artistic interpretation. But that's not what bugs me about this disc. What really bugs me is his style of playing. He relies on resonance and the transcript is completely devoid of silence. The result is a droning wall of notes, and all the pieces sound the same. It reminds me of Windham Hill recordings, but without the expression. Get Yorke's new album, Eraser, if you need a Radiohead fix, or get George Winston if you want solo Piano. I really wish I could recommend this, but I just can't.
a bit disappointing.......2006-07-11
O'Riley takes some liberties here, and that's fine. I'm a bit disappointed by his dynamic range, which is a bit predictable from song to song, and also with his tendency to overload the songs with schizophrenic ramblings. The craziness works well at times -- see "There There" for a time when it works well -- and other times it is overwhelming (see: "Nice Dream").
Despite a sometimes overloaded sound, the song list is so attractive and O'riley hits so many high notes (if you will..) that the CD is well worth owning. I prefer the "True Love Waits" album.
Cocktail Party Radiohead.......2006-03-21
I own the first Christopher O'Reily Radiohead Tribute - True Love Waits. If you love his stunning piano in that, or if you love stunning piano altogether, you will love Hold Me To This. I am an avid lover of all things Radiohead turned into wordless music lullabyes and this one does not dissapoint.
Good effort.......2006-03-02
Sound all the same...listen to the samples before you buy it. If your a fan of radiohead you wont like it...if your a fan of the piano you wont like it. But I give my respect to the musician for making the effort to replicate already beutiful music.

Customer Reviews:
Strong single.......2007-01-07
Street Spirit is a great song recorded by a then just-blossoming band. The b-sides "Talk Show Host" and "Bishop's Robes" are also catchy. It's interesting to point out that the band's Krautrock influence may not have been only evident on Kid A; halfway through "Talk Show Host" the drum beat suddenly parallels the beat played in Can's Halleluwah.
Radiohead at Their Finest.......2005-06-06
I really think singles are overpriced. However, back in my radiohead fanaticism days (i still love them, but have since branched out to other bands as well), i was determined for a while to buy every recorded breath that radiohead had released. I started buying these singles up when they were $30 for three songs, and for the most part, never regretted it. This particular single is not only the finest song collection radiohead has ever released, I believe it's the best music that Radiohead is CAPABLE of releasing. There is magic in this three-song set that is indescribable without listening to it. All three songs are fairly slow-paced, and walk a fine balance between being awestruck by the possibilities of life and being tormented by the thought of one's own demise. While you could probably download these songs in fifteen minutes, however you get them, get them, and listen to them in this order over and over. This is radiohead's finest moment. Better than all six of their studio albums, better than the live album, better than the airbag ep, the itch ep, or the My Iron Lung ep (which takes a distant second), and better than the dozen other singles i own. If you like radiohead, this is the perfect place to start your collection, or, even better, the perfect place to end it.
Wonderful.......2003-10-12
Street Spirt (Fade Out): A true Radiohead classic. If you haven't heard this song, you're really missing out. Easily one of the ten best songs the band has ever done. I'm don't think it needs to be described; just know that it's amazing. 5/5
Talk Show Host: Another classic. Driving repetition of a guitar riff until it climaxes, complimented by eerie vocals and lyrics. This one pops up at live shows more often than Street Spirt does, surprisingly, so there are various live versions floating around on the net that are much better than the recorded one. Was featured in the modern remake of Romeo and Juliet.
Bishop's Robes: This would have fit nicely onto OK Computer. A softer song that focuses more on aural landscapes than anything. Very emotional and very good. 5/5
This is easily the best single Radiohead ever released.
I'd give this 6 stars if i could.......2003-06-02
its official, this is one the best singles i have ever heard. period. Street Spirit has that really deep sounding acoustic/electric guitar line that gives me chills. It took time to make me fully appreciate it, but when it hit me, BAM! This song is great for when you're feeling depressed.
Talk Show Host has an amazing keyboard line in it. It has this weird, cloudy atmospheric feel to it. It produces emotions in me that i rarely ever feel. There isnt exactly a real chorus to it either. its amazing, just a steady flow of gray heaven.
Bishop's Robes is a very dark song. Its emotional intensity stunned me the first time i heard it, the way Thom delivers the line "I am not going back", its just powerful.
I think this single will effect you just as much as it effected me if you allow it to. Even non-radiohead fans will appreciate it.
Amazing.......2002-10-10
Street Spirit is a trademark Radiohead song. And in this instance, it is accompanied by two superlative B-sides, even though "B"-sides is hardly a fair tag given the quality of these songs. Talk Show Host is a somewhat experimental dig at the media while Bishop's Robes is a smooth, simple track which sees Thom looking back at his schoolboy days with a measure of melancholy. A thing of beauty.

Customer Reviews:
Nothing Groundbreaking.......2002-01-02
There are two b-sides here to speak of. 'Banana Co.' can also be found on "Itch," the extremely pricey Japanese import e.p. It's a good song, but not one of Radiohead's most memorable ones. 'Molasses' may be available other places, but not that I am aware of. It also is a good song, but is it worth the price of this single for these two b-sides? That really depends on how much you like Radiohead. 'Street Spirit' is a great song, but you can get it on "The Bends" as well as the other U.K. single for this song which is a lot more interesting. My advice is to buy "The Bends" AND the other single if you're a big fan.
Must have for Radiohead fanatics!!!.......2001-11-22
I've only been into Radiohead for the past few months. I'm just simply boggled on how I missed this bands evolution through the past years. This single is part of my growing collection of b-side singles and rarities put out by Radiohead. It's getting harder to find these singles so any chance you have now to get a deal you should take advantage while they're available. Street Spirit is a great tune that concludes the fantastic albumn "The Bends." This single includes one of my favorite b-side tracks "Banana Co." Also included on this single is the b-side "Molassas." Pretty cool tune, but the disk is worth it just for banana co. If you're a big time fan/collector of Radiohead, this single is a must. There are other singles and imports, I think, that have these tracks, but it's very convinient and I believe cheaper to get them on this single. Either way, Radiohead rules and this is a great addition to any music collection. Enjoy!!!

Simple.......2004-09-16
Totally uninspired. They put Radiohead to a string quartet but there's no personality to it, they've just drained Yorke's voice away and replaced it with a replica on strings. If only they had brought their own vision to the work instead of trying to reproduce it on different instruments. To coin a phrase: there ain't nothin like the real thing.
Beautiful!.......2004-01-04
It is what it says.
Radiohead symphony style. I love it, if you like radiohead and you enjoy string quartets you will love this!
It has my 2 favorite radiohead songs which was a big help.
Its nice to sit back and relax to. What more can you say except its all played beautifully and a must have for all big radiohead fans.
delicious.......2003-07-05
a young korean boy ran past my stoop yesterday morning, he was full of the wee and vinegar that makes children climb trees and wrestle coons by the lake. He tripped on my pottet begonias and went headfirst into a row of daylillies waiting to be put into the ground. He was out cold for 3 days, and i listened to this cd, which he had in his german fanny pack. I can't decide if the vomit made me listen, or listening made me vomit. Either way it was delicious, i'll have seconds....mmmmm maybe thirds. oh dear im naughty, somebody punish me.

Album Description
Millions of people are drawn to Venice Beach, California every year for the Spirit it holds. This spirit lets one be exactly who they are regardless of what anyone else might think. This atmostphere has been the artistic breeding ground for such great talents as Jim Morrison and The Doors, Charlie Chaplin, Janis Joplin, Rickee Lee Jones, Bob Dylan and Dennis Hopper. This recording is not only an attempt to show the world the validity of the street performer, it is also an attempt to capture on CD "The Spirit of Venice" that has inspired us all.

Best Radiohead Single Ever Released.......2003-06-13
Absolutely amazing, I have never tired of this single.
Faultless.......1998-08-04
I am a big radiohead fan, and if I could only have one CD out of my collection, it would be this one.
Don't listen to the radio.......1998-07-25
This is proof that Radiohead have done and will continue to do what no other band in history could have: astound critics and listeners without even releasing an album. The single could pass for an album itself. There are only four songs, and they aren't particularly long, but these songs are better than the lumps of trash that radio-friendly bands defecate onto the public every year.

A real piece of history from 1958 - mono but not dated.......1998-12-14
This box set earns its 5 stars on three counts. The first, the obvious one, that Boris Christoff (so closely identified with his namesake Godunov) is the perfect Mussorgsky bass. The second is that these songs are all excellent, not many 'complete' song collections can be so uniformly good. The third, and this is what makes it 5 stars not 4, is that EMI have really taken the libretto seriously - 144 pages with full cyrillic texts (not just roman alphabet transcriptions) plus translations in English, French and German. Timings: 57'14 66'51 67'57
