Rock for Light

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Virtually everyone agrees that this group--made up of four Washington, D.C.-bred African American jazzbos--single-handedly invented hardcore. They radically quickened punk's tempos, added virtuoso instrumentation, and topped it all off with the mystic squeals of shaman-like frontman Paul "H.R." Hudson. This disc, produced (oddly enough) by ex-Cars leader Ric Ocasek, gives voice to the band's scathing sociopolitical judgment (see "Big Takeover") as well as its ability to simply put the hammer down and rock ("At the Movies"). It also allows the rhythm section of Darryl Jenifer and Earl Hudson to flex their muscle on a smattering of dub reggae interludes that help lull the unsuspecting into the right frame of mind for the next HC sucker punch. --David Sprague --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Battling his own personal demons while he has been highly coveted as a producer for other bands, singer/songwriter Mark Linkous' output with his own Sparklehorse has been as irregular as it is ingenious. And it's been five years since the candid album It's a Wonderful Life welcomed a clean-and-sober, Linkous crafting the same divine and bizarre songs that have come to define his North Carolina-based band. That inclination continues here with the peculiar front man punctuating his songs with mentions of ghosts and knives and mountaintops, and presenting them with a murmured, spaced-out and psychedelic soundtrack. The up-tempo, bundle-of-nerves pop songs "It's Not So Hard" and Guided by Voices twin "Ghost in the Sky," though luscious, seem out of place among slow and startling ballads like "Getting It Wrong," "See the Light" or, especially, the imminent kiss-off "Some Sweet Day," where Linkous grouses, "I was the one who loved you most/ But you can't put your arms around a ghost." A parting shot that's meant to linger—much like the 53 minutes that are Mark Linkous' latest comeback. --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars Linkous does power pop.......2007-04-28

I love the music on this one. "Ghost in the Sky", "Mountains", "Knives of Summertime" are amazing. Best music he's done. The words are not up to "Wonderful Life" level, but I can't argue with the music.

Not sure what "Morning Hollow" is doing on here, though. Seems to break up the flow too much. It's a good song, but this is the exact same version from "Wonderful Life". I'd advise skipping it -- album plays better just listening to the pop tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Yummy.......2007-03-10

I like the new pop-ness about it. A yummy 10 minute instramental makes me totally space out. I very much like it. Mark Linkous did it again. (but this time more happy).
Anyway, I love this band. The album is no let-down.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-03-05

Haunting, lyrical, with melodies that will stick in your head upon first listening...a masterpiece of post-rock/post-pop songwriting. In my top 10 faves of 2006.

4 out of 5 stars Not my type of music, but...........2007-01-07

This is the type of music I typically wouldn't care for. The music is electronic and airy, and the singer's voice a little too sweet and fragile for my taste. I must say, though, that the disc is very good. The songs are layered, complex, and the album unfolds nicely. After a couple of spins, I found myself really enjoying the music and the mood it creates. To me, the only negative is the 10+ minute wordless final song, with soft, dreamy melodies that would have made a nice 2-3 minute finale but don't quite keep my interest for the entire duration.

5 out of 5 stars Great range, dreamt on great stars.......2006-12-16

With breathtaking range, a heartfelt sensability that doesn't annoy, great ideas, lyrics and melodies, Sparklehorse strums his way into his fifth or so album, with beautiful nonchalence. But don't be decieved. This is a rich, interesting, complete album. All the trimmings. And maybe the first time since Vivadixie that he's had rendered emotions so bare.

5 out of 5 stars Bad Brains.......2007-07-05

How can you describe Bad Brains? How can you describe the first time you listened to Bad Brains? First off you are blown away by tracks like Supertouch and Sailin' On then the next minute you get hit with some pure reggae tracks like The Meek and I! You are left thinking to yourself "What the ****!"

Bad Brains are a band like no other and this is one of their best albums, no matter what anyone says about this band they are unique in music. Hardcore that leaves Minor Threat in the dust.

Buy it, buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars Hardcore the way it's supposed to be.......2007-02-04

This is the definitive hardcore album. Bad Brains were among those who invented hardcore and they definitely set the ledge almost too high. This album is their best, IMO. It's almost incredible how tight the music is...

5 out of 5 stars AN IMPORTANT PIECE OF YOUR HARDCORE COLLECTION..........2006-10-21

This is a great album, but get the PVC Records release which is available on CD, the reason being that the Caroline re-issue has been sped up making HR sound like a chipmunk and the bass guitar and floor tom seem non-existent. I don't know what the reviewer down below is thinking--with Rock for Light you get blazing furious hardcore assault with some reggae tunes where the extremely overhyped I Against I doesn't come close...If you like 80's rock mixed with hardcore than get I Against I...If your full of testosterone and you just wanna go nuts, then get Rock For Light!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Invented Hardcore??I think not.......2005-11-15

Bad brains did not invent hardcore, that is a Politically-correct inspired myth.hardcore began in California with bands like The germs,FEAR,Black Flag and others who started to play punk in a harder and faster style then the ramones or sex pistols. The first band to really take it up a notch and play in that jaw-dropping ultrafast style was a band called the Middle class, whose first single 'out of vogue'came out in 1978,more then two years before 'pay to cum'.as an old school punk I can assure you this Bad brains- created- hardcore crap didnt begin till the early 90s,and is more then likely influenced by the color of their skin then anything else.anyway I against I is far better then rock for light,so get that CD instead.

Disney's pioneering 1982 effort in computer animation has garnered a small but devoted cult audience, despite--or perhaps because of--its now-dated, rudimentary vid-game aesthetic. But while designers Jean Giraud and Syd Mead gave its visual design a certain streamline moderne panache, its musical score attempts a similar back-to-the-future fusion with somewhat more mixed results. Given the composer's often chilling, landmark synthesized score work a decade earlier on Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, Wendy Carlos seemed like an apt choice for Tron. But without her previous collaborator's taste for Beethoven, Elgar, and Rossini, Carlos's instincts wend from atmospheric, 20th-century European modernism to cheesy '50s B-film melodramatics, with the sonic limitations of '80s synth technology sometimes a burden. Still, those fond of her solo work and collaboration with Kubrick on Orange (and The Shining) will find familiar charms in "Water, Music, and TRONaction," "TRONscherzo" and "Theme from TRON." But Journey's "Only Solutions" and now all-too-ironic "1990's Theme" further fix the score firmly in the '80s. This debut CD-release of the score also features three bonus tracks, the original "TRONaction" and two other unused cues, including a solo synth rendition of the film's anthem. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Wendy Carlos - 'Tron' (Disney).......2007-06-26

I'm honestly not all that familiar with the extended catalog of electronic music pioneer Carlos has done outside of her 'Clockwork Orange' and 'Tales Of Heaven And Hell' releases (see my reviews of both), but I was sort of taken with 'Tron'. This is music 'from the future, with a vision'. Really dug the two cuts scored from Journey here, "Only Solutions" and "1990's Theme". 'Tron' may be considered by some to be a bit bizarre, but should be pretty enjoyable to most. Do check this soundtrack out when you can. You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars If You Liked the Movie, You'll Love this Album.......2006-12-30

This was the only work of Wendy Carlos I've ever heard, and I thought it was great! For the time period the movie was made in, this music was amazing and ahead of it's time. Watching the movie and listening to the soundtrack go hand-in-hand--I don't think this soundtrack would stand too well on its own. However, for those who've seen Tron, every song will be exciting.

The blending of synth and orchestral music was very well done--so much so that I didn't ever notice it until listening to the soundtrack the first time in my iPod headphones. Every song has a unique blend of synth/live orchestra.

The only reason I gave the CD 4 stars instead of 5 is because it isn't one of those albums that you can listen to over and over again. Rather, listen one or two times, then put it on the shelf, then bring it out again at some later time. The Journey songs on the CD (and in the movie) were defintely not the band's best, so don't get the album just because you're a Journey fan. I'm glad Disney finally published this CD!

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!.......2004-07-15

Etant fan de "TRON", j'ai eu un trés grand plaisir a posséder la BOF de Wendy Carlos.La musique est tous simplement génial et un grand MERCI pour AMAZON.CA ,car sans eux, mon réve devenez impossible.

2 out of 5 stars The sounds need the sights.......2004-07-02

While I felt the music of 'Tron' melded quite well with the film's action and scenes and set the right tone for the most part, the music by itself doesn't sound all that interesting to me. Ms. (formerly Mister) Carlos' work requires the movie's visual cues to help it really stand out. Without the visual element, the score is kinda droning, and rarely catches my attention while I'm listening to it and performing some other task-- like writing a new product review for example. It's almost like I'm not listening to anything at all. Not helping matters is the pair of sub-par Journey tunes. I guess Disney didn't wanna shell out the big bucks to get the rights to a few of their decent songs...

Bottom line: if ya wanna listen to this soundtrack, buy the Tron DVD (the 2-disc Special Edition of course, which can be found at www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005OCMR/qid=1088712198/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_1/002-6699831-0404821?v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846) and listen to it while watching the movie. You'll get much more auditory enjoyment listening to the score in this manner, believe you me...

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic soundtrack for a pioneer CGI movie.......2004-01-24

It took 9 years for Disney to release the original soundtrack for Tron. But the wait was all the more worthwhile. When I saw the movie way back in 82, I was entralled by its computer animation, but noticed the soundtrack was equally impressive. Like the movie itself, the music was a pioneer of its kind, with an emphasis on synthesizer composition, while there was a mix of orchestral music in the soundtrack. The electronic music is what makes it so special and it creates a truly cyberspace feel for the movie. It sounds not just futuristic, but the variations in the music generate different moods for the plot. I like most of the pieces in the soundtrack, but I think 'Theme from Tron' and the 'Love Theme' stand out, and the 'Anthem' is one of my favorites. Needless to say the synthesizer music throughout the soundtrack manages to stand the test of time, even though the 2 tracks by Journey do sound pretty dated by today's standard. But those 2 songs are still pretty good considering they are from 1982.
Wendy Carlos managed to create music that suits the movie to the T. The electronic music is full of harmony. I can listen to the soundtrack time and again and still not get tired of it, because it still sounds futuristic more than 20 years after it was composed. I recommend this soundtrack to all those who have seen the movie, as well as those who enjoy electronic music.

    5 out of 5 stars A brilliant album with a simple narrative.......2006-06-20

One of the best albums I've ever heard. I'm a major Reese Roper fan, but I've got to say that this is a cut above even most of his regular, awesome stuff. An album of beautiful music which tells a simple narrative: A group of astronauts, in orbit around Saturn's moon Titan, suffer a mechanical malfunction that propels them into the dark side of Titan. Mission Control back on earth, along with the astronaut's families, don't know what happened or if they're even still alive. At the end, the ship pulls out of the dark side of Titan into the light and they all survived.

A simple tale, but not one told directly, the monologue tracks excluded, which are ones like "Prologue", "Gemini" and "Atropos" which are ambience music and a character giving a mnologue. The details of the story are kept very vague, so you have to fill in the spaces yourself. The lyrics do no tell the story(with a few exceptions, like "The Sun Also Rises", "Titan" and possibly "Enamel"), but the tone of the pieces along with the narrative tracks give you a feel for what is going on.

A few of the songs I don't particularly like, like "Babie's Breath", but those are deeply in the minority and do not detract from the overall excellence.

5 out of 5 stars The Music That I have Hoped For . . ........2006-06-06

We need to get this band back together again! After countless rounds through my cd player I have come to three conclusions. First, this is by far the greatest work in my cd, tape, LP, and eight track collections. Second, the thoughts and feelings conveyed by the lyrics and music are equal to, if not better than, any other music that I have listened to ... period. Third, this CD WAS NEVER EVEN GIVEN A CHANCE of proper exposure to the public. People who have even heard of it may have viewed it in terms of "just being Christian" or in the light of Five Iron Frenzy (which I'm sorry ---is just really, really weak music.) If I had listened to FIF before buying this CD I wouldn't have given it a second look let alone put it in my CD player! Now to Roper, come on! What are you doing with "mediocre"? With a return to the form of Brave Saint Saturn and some REAL exposure I am certain that the entire world would be reaching for your CD's. You and the other members that comprised "Brave Saint Saturn" had your hands on a magic formula and you seemingly let it slide right through your fingers . . . I just can't believe it.

5 out of 5 stars Pure gem... just speechless..........2005-08-10

Wow. As many who buy this album will be fans of FIF, I know you expect more ska/punk stuff, the legendary stuff that FIF is made of ... awesome catchy lyrics and thought mixed with addictive music.

Well, this is the same... just not the same. Music style is different for one. It's hard to categorize it really... And this is a tale told of one's journey. However, with any songs that Roper writes, one must pay attention to the lyrics. The ones that will make you think are all... but the ones that will make you cry is "Estrella". Read the insert about the guy this song is about. If you don't cry, you are just a heart of stone.

And don't miss the grand finale "Daylight" which brings the album to an awesome ending. This is sheer gem, my friends. Very mature and blessing stuff.

    5 out of 5 stars Undeserved Obscurity.......2005-03-20

Two years ago some of my friends got me hooked on Five Iron Frenzy, a band that has some of the most insightful and intelligent lyrics that I have ever heard. A year ago, one of those friends was talking about BraveSaintSaturn and put on this CD, even just casually listening you can tell that this is a step above Five Iron.

When I bought this I just casually listened to it for awhile, slowly the lyrics begin to work on you and you hear how heartfelt and intelligent these really are. The two songs that really catch my attention are "Heart Still Beats" and "Daylight," the first of those follows many of Five Iron's songs about indians, even the lowliest (many times the people we treat as low aren't as low as we see them) person is still a human. "Daylight" is hope, in short, I'm not going ot get into some of it's more deep themes.

After I bought this, I bought BraveSaint's first Album, "So Far From Home," which is no where near as polished as this album is, or any of the Five Iron albums that preceded it. But many of the themes of "The Light of Things Hoped For" are carried from this album.

Last, I feel that one of the strongest elements of any album is how the album flows together. This entire album is a story, told through different styles of music that compliment each other well.

This is THE best album that I have heard in any genre, especially the Christian market. But the album has "undersold," or so I'm told, and is rather obsure and this comes from the fact that the band does not tour, don't let that discourage you, buy this album, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album by Brave Saint Saturn Again!.......2005-01-21

I have not finished listening to the album yet, but I already love it. Each song is unique in its own way and yet similar. The passion that these four guys have for music and Christ is evident
in the lyrics and beats. I also want to take the opportunity to correct one thing that a previous reviewer said about Track 9, Estrella.
The following is from the liner notes of the album:
"This song is about a dear friend of ours, Matt Estrella. Matt suffered from a genetic disease called Neufibromatosis 2, which causes tumors to grow on the myelin sheaths of the outer nervous
system. Eventually, the tumors will cause the nerves to stop functioning. Our friend Matt was already deaf when we met him. He was losing his sight and a lot of feeling in the other parts of his body. The tumors were large, and very noticeable in some places...."

If you are even considering buying this CD, do so - you will love it! The beauty of this music, and their voices, is beyond explanation; you must experience it. The choice of songs was wonderful for their talent. This CD is absolutely some of the most lovely music ever recorded.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Sublime!.......2006-12-13

OK, this really IS pure, fresh, angelic singing that gives you that "tingle factor"! (I know, it's hard to find that, but this did it for me!)

Simply gorgeous singers, crunchy arrangements, top-notch instrumentalists, fresh sound, well-crafted engineering and production. It's hard not to gush with positive adjectives!

I like the mixture of mainly classical favorites with a few pop, folk and spiritual songs thrown in. I'm a classically trained singer/composer/musician who also loves pop and rock, so I appreciate good quality music of many genres, especially those that integrate different influeces, like this does.

When you play this CD, you will find it hard to do anything but listen in awe - it makes your skin tingle, your soul awaken, your breath deepen! It's better than a shot of...well...you can fill in the blank!

I know all these songs are "popular" classics, so maybe some music snobs won't like the "mainstream"-ness of this. But on the other hand, those who aren't "into" classical music would actually like this (I challenge ANYONE not to like this CD!)

It was fun (and a nice surprise) to hear an arrangement of the British pop artist, Robbie Williams' song, "Angels" on the CD! This was one of Robbie William's big hits that made it across to the USA (I think)...

And what an orgasmic arrangment of "Windmills of your mind" - I love the subtle accordion in this, just tugging further on the heart strings! Wow.

I've heard many different arrangements of the classical songs, "The Flower Duet", Pachelbel's "Canon in D", "Barcarolle", "Cavellera Rusticana", "Ave Verum", "Ave Maria", and Barber's "Agnus Dei", but these really are fresh sounding and stirringly performed. Enough to make even the seasoned classical musican sit up and take notice. And entrancing enough to hook the new-comer to classical music.

I've started playing this CD to my young kids - what a fantastic introduction to classical music for them. (Watch out, it will make them distinguish good quality from cheap imitations!)

Infact, I'm so impressed with this CD, I am now going to buy several copies of it to give to my musician and non-musician friends for Christmas... I'm pretty sure they will all get as much joy from this as I have.

This would also be wonderful for wedding music, or any special occasion. (As well as just lovely for relaxing to at home). Very powerful.

It's Saturday here in Chicago. I just heard these girls being interviewed on Classic FM.

They sound like great girls, each already more than a little accomplished. Interspersed in the interview were at least four complete tracks from the CD. Unbelievable sounds, harmonies and individual solo passages. Angelic is a perfect description.

I'm here today to buy it for myself.

    5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

3 out of 5 stars Okay but not great.......2007-05-05

I am a big fan of Brian Eno's early abstract work. I like the way he took simple ideas and explored them until they became transformed into something completely different. For example, on "Music for Airports" he recorded women singing single notes, made tape loops of varying lengths from those recordings and let them circulate until many different combinations of notes and silences emerged. The result was beautiful and other-worldly. So, when Eno recorded an album of "soundtrack material" (for non-existant films) it seemed that he had stumbled onto a great outlet for his music. Instead, this is a collection of pieces that sound like floor sweepings from the "Another Green World" sessions. The pieces are short and often sound like passing thoughts that never developed into anything of substance. There are some nice moments on this recording, including some great bass parts and guest appearences by people like Robert Fripp but overall this is one of the weakest of Eno's early recordings.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Eno...........2005-08-01

This isnt really an ambient recording...it was done before "ambient music"...very ethereal pieces...love it. Its a great recording if it doesnt go over your head.

    1 out of 5 stars Remastering errors.......2005-07-05

Does anyone have the final word on the degree to which Astralwerks (sic) have screwed up these Eno 'remasters'?

'Another Green World' has the first bars of 'Everything merges with the night' missing, 'Climate Study' is missing from 'More Music For Films, and someone below states that the intro to
'Quartz' on this album is also truncated. Are Astralwerks just a bunch of amateurs or something? Eno must be well pleased with this mess..

2 out of 5 stars Difficult, undeveloped ideas........2005-06-14

A collection of 18 pieces, some intended for specific films, some evidentally not, Eno's "Music For Films" is one of his most difficult ambient records. The music contained within this disc is moody and cinematic, but its also fractured. With most the tracks less than two minutes long, ideas often do not get the chance to develop to their fullness ("Aragon", "Alternative 3").

Having stated that, there is some fanastic material on here ("From the Same Hill" with some great guitar/synth interplay, the Frippertronics piece "Slow Water", edgy and bizarre "Quartz") that makes it worth seeking out for fans of Eno. For the more curious, try "Discreet Music", "Music for Airports", or "No Pussyfooting" (Fripp & Eno) for a better introduction.

2 out of 5 stars Another Mastering Screw-up.......2005-06-02

The music here rates 5 stars, but be warned: the opening sustained note at the beginning of track 10 (Quartz) starts late, cutting off about half of the note. If that's not important to you, order away.

This recording of 12th-century mystic Hildegard von Bingen's music is a sheer delight, a beautiful collection of compositions for which the Benedictine nun (considered a saint, although never formally canonized) claimed divine inspiration. Listening to singer Jocelyn Montgomery's gorgeous renditions, that's easy to believe. Lushly produced by David Lynch, Lux Vivens has a clarity and presence of sound that does the material justice. The accompaniment itself is fairly thin, confined to sparse instrumentation and the inclusion of crashing waves, wind, tolling bells, or birdsong; this allows the beauty of the melodies themselves to shine through unimpeded. The selections include both secular ("Battle and Transition," "Et Ideo") and sacred ("Gloria Patri," "Kyrie"), though it's the melodies that capture the listener's ear. Enchanting and often otherworldly, Lux Vivens is a listening experience that's both subtle and sublime. -- Genevieve Williams

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Divine Flame Within ~ Finding The Place Of Rest And Refreshment .......2006-04-01

'Lux Vivens' (Living Light) is nothing less than a mystical journey into the medieval spirituality and soul of Hildegard von Bingen. Performed by Jocelyn Montgomery who possesses a voice worthy of a solo position in the heavenly choir, you will be entranced by this beautiful -15 track- CD's exploration of Hildegard's interior world.

With limited instrumentation, Jocelyn is accompanied by the sounds of nature as provided by David Lynch; gentle rain, storm and thunder and birds chirping in the trees. One track even includes the sound of charging horses and swords clashing.

A great way to unwind at the end of the day, or prepare oneself for a spiritual respite in the middle of the everyday madness.

5 out of 5 stars "Living Light" : the title says it all.......2005-12-07

So I'll admit that I purchased this album simply because of the fact that David Lynch(and don't forget his absolutly amazing partner is soundscape,John Neff)was involved, and also after reading the reviews here on amazon.I got EXACTLY what I expected, turned up a notch! This is the type of synth work I can honestly say doesn't sound much like synth at all,and it fits perfectly as a puzzle peice into this work.I like the two non-vocal tracks;the first(Flame and Vision) is a stupenous introduction to the music, lighting the fuse of this slow-burning masterpeice. The second would be a bit off-putting if the precise clarity of the swords wasn't as evident;one definate plus to having a film-maker with Lynch's expertise aboard to lend his fine-tuned ear.Ms. montgomery's performances of the Von Bingen classics can be summed up as subdued, yet magnificently triumphant! She is right up to par with such greats as Dawn Upshaw,Azam Ali(haven't heard that one,eh?DO NOT HESITATE to investigate this very talented new voice!),Jennifer Charles,Gigi, you name it.The manner in which she eases into uplifting(but not over-the-top)shows experience beyond her years, indeed.I cannot understand why so many "midevil"and"naturalist" individuals have refered to the album as a slap-in-the-face to their respective genre, the synths are barely existant! All I can tell you is that if I could only bring three albums to a campfire in the wilderness sitting by myself,I'd instantly choose this classic,Buckethead's "Electric Tears",and the Kronos Quartet's "Salome:Dances for Peace"(although "Black Angels" would also be tempting).

5 out of 5 stars Music to sooth the savage pagan.......2003-11-05

I'm a pagan, but I can hear in this music something very special that transcends all the horror the RC church has visited on this planet. But the RCs have a very quirky history, especially when it comes to their "mystics". Indeed, a great many of the Catholic saints and mystics are ecclesiastical and hyper-dimensional enough to impress a nature-worshipper like me. The purity doesn't need a label. This particular version of von Bingen is a stroke of luck in that a modernist like David Lynch can actually climb out of his absurdist, Samuel Beckett-esque toilet long enough to do something that approaches this delicacy and sublimity. Still, seeing a Lynch film and listening to this CD is mental whiplash. I consider 2 pieces on this CD to be some of the best music I've ever encountered: "Viridissima" and "Clarissima". Especially "Clarissima". If I could only have one CD worth of music, Montgomery's "Clarissima" would be on it.

3 out of 5 stars A Feather on the Breath of God.......2003-10-23

Sure, Miranda Sex Garden was a wonderful group who delivered their music with a sly wink. Not so Jocelyn Montgomery & David Lynch with Lux Vivens. Hildegard was a genius, mystic & the founder of a spiritually & politically powerful abbey. Her music, while complex in expression, is composed to be sung with unadorned simplicity. If this music is performed outdoors where bells are ringing & birds are chirping, that's ambient sound. Here it just gets in the way. If this is where you first encounter Hildegard of Bingen, that's great. But do move on to the recording that began it all, "A Feather on the Breath of God," featuring Emma Kirby, a musician who specializes in early music & who probably inspired Montgomery to form a group like Miranda Sex Garden in the first place.

Lynch's musical concepts are showcased best on the Twin Peaks soundtrack & the ethereal Julie Cruise album, "Floating Into the Night."

5 out of 5 stars One of kind CD.......2002-10-11

I love this CD. It's so enrapturing and beautiful. Unlike the Enigma stuff, which is filled with cheesy drum beats, "Lux Vivens" is just Jocelyn's amazing voice combined with moody music and some sound effects (by David Lynch no less!). The result is absolutely brilliant. My only gripe with this CD is that there should have been more music. I never wanted the CD to end.

BTW, "Lux Vivens" was made in 1998. Where's Jocelyn's follow-up CD?

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff- sleepy sleepy.......2005-10-03

Acoustic guitar driven melodic rock is the style on this Lullaby cd.
The sounds will wash over you. The album can be rough in some spots, mostly in some semi sour notes hit by the singer, this is not near enough to truly stand out as a problem with the album. The introspective lyrics for some reason make these sour notes turn the album even more real to me for some reason. Additional accompnyment by a plethora of instuments rounds out the sound to make this a very full sounding album.
I came to this band by way of watching the Spend An Evening With Saddle Creek. I am pretty sure the main singer is the leader of the Saddle Creek band Mayday. I will definately be checking them out.
I like the Lullaby cd, and would suggest it to anyone. If you are looking for something similar, try the Good Life.

4 out of 5 stars Before Connor Orbest and alongside Palace.......2003-05-25

I got this album when it came out and I am still returning to it, especially late at night after a few too many beers. This is chamber pop at it's most inventive and it set the stage for what was to come with Saddle Creek's releases. I still think that when this band hit their highs that no one else could or has followed them...and this album is full their highs. Highly intellegent lyrics with a deeply emotional delivery fronts a backing band of glockenspiels, banjos, cellos, guitars, organs, drums and dulcimers. Sort of "post-alt.country rock" if you had to try and fit this band into one of the many pathetic genres that critics self-invent. But the beauty of this album, and it is beautiful, is that it owes as much to Talk Talk as it does to Uncle Tupelo...and sounds totally unlike either. This is an original work that is not only great in and of itself, but is important in setting the stage for what was to come out of Omaha and a little label called Saddle Creek.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, deeply intelligent album.......2000-07-20

I LOVED Lullaby's previous release, Blanket Warm, and at first I couldn't grasp "I Never Even Asked For Light." Now, however, both are equally amazing. "Light" has a more aggressive edge, but the same dark poetry and complex accoustic instrumentation. "Hypnotist" contains my favorite Lullaby lyric: "I dreamt I was a firefighter, but the flames were never real. I dreamt I was an engineer, and I designed it dear, the world's perfect treadmill. I dreamt I was a hypnotist, a farmer and an architect, a poet and an acrobat. I dreamt the flames were real." Original and beautiful, as is the whole album.

4 out of 5 stars No Sophomore Slump.......1999-12-10

While I still prefer Blanket Warm overall, I was impressed with the dimension that the more aggressive songs (e.g., The Hypnotist) add to the picture this lush music paints. I think this album is missing the narrative element of Blanket Warm and is a bit less consistent, but nonetheless I recommend the second album from these midwestern minstrels highly.

    4 out of 5 stars surprisingly hummable.......1999-09-01

This sharp-dressed four-piece from Lincoln, Nebraska write songs about "serenading the sky under an audience of seagulls" and their impressive second album boasts a range and variety of compositions and arrangements which you would never expect from the "alternative country" label. I Never Even Asked For Light is a remarkably rich collection of songs about self-delusion and despair, full of characters who fly too close to the sun, wrapped up in hauntingly beautiful melodies. The all-acoustic instrumentation doesn't prevent them rocking out and generating a big noise on tracks like Hypnotist, but mostly the mood is one of quiet contemplation, echoing through folk ballads of the highest order such as the Man Vs The Tide suite. Sounding like nothing else you've heard, and with songs full of juicy lines like "Anchors away - these Euclidean minds are our ball and chains" (and you'd be surprised how hummable that is), this is one of the most unlikely, but rewarding, growers of the year.
