An utterly perfect introduction to an unjustly neglected band.......2006-12-10
The Screaming Trees are well known to close watchers of the alternative scene in the US in the early nineties. While other Pacific Northwest bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden were achieving nationwide success, the Trees attained notoriety only among the more discerning fans. Part of the problem was that while they cuts some amazingly great tracks, none of their individual albums rated as indisputable masterpieces. Their first several albums especially contain many weak tracks alongside utter gems. Even their two best albums, SWEET OBLIVION and DUST, had their weak moments. The problem is that the Pacific Northwest scene was on one level focused on album-oriented bands, while the Screaming Trees made great singles but less-than-spectacular albums. Their other great disadvantage was that they were simply not a good-looking group. Some of their were big, either in height or girth, and the frankly looked a bit menacing.
That is why OCEAN OF CONFUSION is a nearly perfect introduction to the Screaming Trees. And although I've enjoyed their albums, I find I almost never listen to any of their music except this compilation disc. In fact, if someone gets this and is truly blown away by what they hear, the next album I recommend them getting is not one of the individual albums, but a second compilation, ANTHOLOGY: SST YEARS 1985-89. That disc covers their earlier years just as this one covers the second half of their career. If one wants more after that, I recommend instead of more Screaming Trees, exploring the solo albums of the band's singer and songwriter Mark Lanegan, especially WHISKEY FOR THE HOLY GHOST.
But though the individual albums weren't great as albums, all contained a few spectacularly great singles. This anthology collects enough of these to prove that while other bands of the time like Nirvana, Mudhony, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains achieved more popular success, they were the equal of any of these bands musically and probably their superior. They in fact exerted considerably influence on Nirvana in general and Kurt Cobain in particular, who was quite the fan of Mark Lanegan. For anyone who wants to own the central works of alt-rock from the time when it moved from the periphery of popular music to its center, this album is indispensable. Few of the songs will be familiar, though "Nearly Lost You" was a minor hit at the time.
Another remarkable thing about this album is that there is utterly no filler. Every song is at least very good, while a number of absolutely spectacular. "Nearly Lost You," as I mentioned, was a minor hit, but should have been a major one. If you aren't hooked after the first two songs on the album, "Who Lies in Darkness" and "Alice Said," there isn't much point in going further. The rest of the album is more of the same, almost all of it very nearly as good. And some of it better, in my humble opinion. The three songs "Nearly Lost You," "Dollar Bill," and "More or Less" are about as good as any three consecutive songs you'll ever hope to find on a grunge album.
If you don't know the Screaming Trees but enjoy any of the bands associated with the Seattle scene in the early nineties, you will love this album. I personally consider this to be some of the greatest music produced by that movement. No one who loves music should be without this.
Best of?.......2006-05-18
I love the Trees, they're awesome and Lanegan has a stunning voice. I don't know if I liked this album as much though. I mean they only had 3 tracks from Uncle Anethesia but made room for 6 or 7 from Sweet Oblivion? They left out some key tracks and put in some sub par ones in my opinion...Bed of Roses wasn't included and it was like the key track off of U.A. Gospel Plow from Dust was left off and I thought it was an awesome track too .... Good cd but i'm not sure if I agree with "best of".
Awesome band, good compilation.......2006-03-19
I found this band through listening to QOTSA and the things Lanegan did with them. I'm glad I discovered this unique form of grunge rock, if one can call it that. My favorites were disappearing and Traveler. Some of the songs can be a bit bland, but overall this is a great CD.
Why did it take until 2005 for me to hear these guy's?.......2006-02-04
Really, I mean I'm amazed they never really made it big..maybe their timing was off or it was fate but in many way's they are as good as the other seattle bands that hit the big time. I kinda bought this disc on a whim...heard the sound clips and sounded slightly different/better than average. I like the vocals..very unique and the music is..although not maybe a 100% original (think late 60's psychadelic meets grunge) they never sound like something you have heard before.
Overall, I would reccomend the album if you like pearl jam or the seattle sound from the early nineties. The album was a lot better than I had expected and I was suprised I had never heard of the band before last year...too bad it took so long.
Q: What kind of trees? A: Screaming Trees.......2005-11-01
A well put together compilation, the bonus tracks make for a worthwhile investment even if you already have some or all of the albums. However, one question remains- where the heck is Bed Of Roses? It was their hightest charting track on the radio, afterall.

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni
Customer Reviews:
excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12
Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.
To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24
Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.
A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.
My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.
A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11
The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.
It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.
Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.
OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15
Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.
Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17
This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"
Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.
It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

A very good CD to buy.......2005-07-06
I have bought many CD regarding American patriotic songs but it is the one that I prefer. The songs are sung in a very classic way and so, there are easy to listen. Jon English as a tenor gives an excellent performance. On the piano, Rob Carriker gives also an excellent performance; he does not try to cover the voice of Jon English but just to support his voice. So, Jon English and Rob Carriker form a very fine duo and the quality of recording is excellent. The choice of songs is also excellent. I strongly recommend this CD.
What an Excellent Work of Art!.......2002-08-30
John English has a booming and resounding voice. Well suited for the rough and tough songs of our countries historic wars. It is an excellent buy, and I recommend it to any fans of great songs and American historics!
Excellent!.......2002-08-30
This cd is excellent! I reccomend it to everyone!! Jonathon English has got an amazing voice!
What A Blast - A Fun and Inspiring CD.......2002-07-30
I have to admit - I didn't know what I'd be getting when I bought this album. I love Americana and have known some of these songs all my life: K-K-K-Katy, Keep the Home-Fires Burning, and Tenting on the Old Camp Ground. Others that are listed I had never heard before: The Soldier's Tear, When Alexander Takes His Ragtime Band to France, and the very funny Captain Jinks! From first to last I found this CD a joy to hear. Jon English has a beautiful voice, and he sings with such clarity that you can understand every word! There are songs that will get your feet taping, and others that will bring a tear to your eye. The chorus is quite obviously not a professional choir, and that's all the better! They sing with an infectious energy and spirit that'll make you want to sing along. Add into that the horns, flute and percussion and this album becomes very pleasant experience. This is one of the best CD's I've heard in a long time, and I heartily recommend it.

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
On Ocean Songs, guitarist Mick Turner strums in grand and mournful sweeps while violinist Warren Ellis draws a rough, heart-pulling bow. On top, David Grubbs bumps lonely on his tom while keeping time with scratchy snare whispers and flickering tips and taps on the cymbals. It's a gorgeous blend that is fully informed by folk forms yet still manages to bristle with electricity. Dirty Three may seem like some mutant folk trio from the old country, but underneath there is a rock band--a dangerous, fire-breathing bunch with lust in their hearts and murder in their eyes. It's these rough edges that allow Dirty Three to speak directly to a boozy, well-worn place where sadness and beauty duke it out. --S. Duda
Customer Reviews:
good music; unfortunate mixing.......2006-07-16
A violin, a guitar and drums meet, then swim about together in dreamy, liquid compositions. The music is fine, but the mixing makes it hard to really let it wash over you. The drums are miked too close while the violin is placed too far back. Rather than smooth violin work supported by twangy guitar and punctuated by percussion, we feel the tension of a misplaced element that throws the balance off. And here, balance is critical.
Sad Sea Songs.......2006-02-04
On this album, the Dirty Three showcase their most somber instrumental talents. Here, their music whispers across musical landscapes, somehow expressing more emotion than spoken words ever could. The music on "Ocean Songs" seems borne of a woolly, restless intoxication. It is a underlain with a meandering sadness and spilling over beautiful, dulcid atmospheres.
Beginning with the most forward and ethereal melody on the entire album, the wispy song "Sirena" is easily one of the saddest pieces. Followed by "The Restless Waves" and "Distant Shore," all uniquely beautiful, vibrant, the first three songs are somehow tied together in their echoes of romance and despair.
The music lives and breathes, and you become willingly captive, especially on the album's longer pieces, the sentimental "Deep Waters" and the ecstatic "Authentic Celestial Music." These songs, although rather indulgent, gain in emotional momentum right up to their end. "Ends of the Earth" calms the cumulative effect of the album with the beautiful addition of piano. The album, as a whole, is simply ethereal. It is a primal emotional energy that has been temporarily captured, but not tamed.
Truly this is the saddest and most epic material recorded by the remarkable three-piece band. The slow, casual guitars and jumbled drums might merely fill interesting space were it not for Warren's love for the expressiveness of violin. What might otherwise have been noteworthy background music pulls you in, and slowly rolls you around in the murk, sometimes sad and screaming, other times calm and brooding.
Key Songs: "Sirena," "The Restless Waves," "Authentic Celestial Music," "Deep Waters"
the restless waves.......2005-12-28
While a good chunk of the groups choice moments appear on the "Horse Stories" lp, "Ocean Songs" is their most superlatively excuted and complete concept to date. Each composition has its own unique feel, while at the same time, builds on the ideas expressed in the track before it (without coming off as redundant....something many instrumental outfits rarely achieve). The end result is a somber, painful, yet beauteous experience that should be indulged as a whole. A tad pretentious, sure...but this record is too good to find any fault in that.
If you are a new Dirty Three listener, this is the record to pick up first. i promise it will grow on you very quickly.
Awash in psychic landscapes.......2002-10-27
Words can't possibly do this sad, beautiful record justice...and that is why the record doesn't include any.
The Dirty Three's finest hour in my humble opinion.
Scared of the ocean no more............2001-11-08
This album was first played to me in a Cinema Studies class as support to the 1928 silent film 'The Wind'. A strange but effective choice considering the film's desert themes and the album's oceanic ones. The album has a loose structure, an improvised feel as the musicians grant themselves the freedom to play like its their last, their intimate knowledge of each other's style directing them effortlessly through this sublime musical trip. I have a special place in my heart for this album but happily concede that it is a little self-indulgent. Some of these tracks extend to around 14 minutes as the musicians' melancholic joy is shamelessly unleashed. And hey, who am I to judge indulgence of this calibre?? A beautiful, mesmerising album if you like it slow and sincere.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Journey.......2005-07-17
I just saw Jennifer Cutting perform with the equally incredible Grace Griffith (who does vocals on the album) and the Ocean Orchestra at a store in Hagerstown, MD outside Washington D.C. Jennifer richly deserves all the awards she has won! I, like all in the audience, was blown away! This is truly a transcendent body of work that transports the listener to a magical place in one's soul. I purchased four copies of this CD as Christmas presents for friends.
I also recommend the groups Connemara and The New St. George, and the solo projects of Grace Griffith who, despite the young onset of Parkinson's Disease, has an otherworldly angelic voice and an inspiringly wonderful spirit. In short, listening to this cd will make you feel so good in so many ways. My love, best wishes and gratitude to all involved in this project.
A compelling mystical musical journey.......2005-04-10
This composition is a truly magical mystical hero's journey into haunting and healing melodies and lyrics! From the cover art, the liner notes, quotations, and without question the music one is immediately taken with the first sounds of the waves and the siren's voice calling you to discover what is next on this wonderful composition. I love it and am telling everyone I know to buy this CD immediately! Hurrah for you Jennifer for staying the course with your vision. May you have much success and continue to compose such visionary music. The world needs this kind of healing now more than ever! Bravo!
The Washington Post (published October 15, 2004).......2005-02-14
It took composer and keyboardist Jennifer Cutting seven years and several Atlantic crossings to complete her "Ocean" journey, to meld sea and soul, myth and music into a thoroughly absorbing listening experience. It may take the rest of us nearly as long to fully appreciate the achievement.
No mere folksy, salt-water song cycle, "Ocean: Songs for the Night Sea Journey" is an album-length enchantment, orchestrated with great care, imagination and color. Cutting, well known in folk-rock circles for her tenure with the New St. George, wrote or arranged all of the music, drawing from sources as diverse as J.S. Bach, Gustav Holst and fusion guitarist Steve Morse. Among her own compositions is "Forgiveness," a splendid showcase for special guest Maddy Prior's soulful soprano. But the Steeleye Span vet isn't the only singer who leaves a deep impression.. Grace Griffith brings an angelic voice and yearning emotions to several ballads, beginning with the welcome unearthing of an ancient Irish song, "The Gladdest Breeze." Singers Polly Bolton and Lisa Moscatiello also contribute to the album's haunting charms, while Bulgarian vocalist Tatiana Sarbinska and the Washington-based women's ensemble Slaveya create a spellbinding weave all their own on "Neptune Reel / Woman of the House." Surrounding Cutting is a stellar cast of instrumentalists, many of them based in the Washington area, who share her talent for gracefully incorporating traditional and contemporary influences.
In the liner notes to "Ocean," Cutting writes: "May you lose yourself in its changing waters, only to find yourself again, renewed and restored." It's a wish fulfilled.

Customer Reviews:
one hit wonder.......2004-10-20
I bought this because of Hundred Mile High City that is featured on the Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels soundtrack. That song rocks, but the rest of the record sounds nothing like it and is pretty boring.
Get Rockin'.......2001-12-21
I heard this playing in my local record store and had to ask who it was! My first thoughts were which band/album from the seventies had I missed? This contains all the excitement of a seventies band with good songs, some riffs, use of wah wah pedal, crisp drumming and interesting vocals. I bought the cd immediately and it has been a favourite since. Definitely worth buying and will lead you to their other albums
everything rock n roll should be.......2001-12-14
when it comes right down to it, good music brings out memorable emotions. i don't really care what anyone has to say about ocean colour scene's stubborn traditionalism. yup, this music sounds like it came straight out of the 60s and 70s, but who are we to penalize them or denigrate them for being born about twenty or thirty years too late? some musical egotists might gasp at the blatant blaspheme that is to follow: ocs stands as tall as nearly anything from the era they idolize. that's right, the proof is in the songs, man. it's goodtime, mind-numbingly passionate rock n roll, that will be timeless. the guitars, the attitude, the vocals, it's all there. and the lyrics are pretty damn good too, even if they sometimes mean less then they seem. just a talented band at what they do. appreciate that and listen to this. not a song will disappoint. my only minor quibble is the absence of their masterpiece, "get away" but at eight minutes, i can see why they left it out. if you don't own their first (real) album yet, this will just make you get that one eventually. and i hate new greatest hits packages. this one's done right.
Wonderful Album.......2001-11-24
Songs for the Front Row exemplifies what Ocean Colour Scene is all about. This band is about the music, and it is some great music. This modern band from England should be rocking in 1975, but luckily they are here today. Tracks such as "Huckleberry Grove" and "The Riverboat Song" illustrate how diffrent there styles can be, and how they pull it off. I have nothing but praise for this album and this band.

If one likes traditional songs created during the days of the sail ship from the U.S. and England, then this is a good cd for that. I enjoyed it very much.
