Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too

Editorial Reviews

Until its shallow posturing gets to be just too much, Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too is fodder for a decent game of Spot the Influence. Singer/songwriter Gregg Alexander's admittedly well-crafted project is indebted to the vaguely funky pop-rock of World Party. But despite airplay for the single "You Get What You Give," he isn't tuneful enough to make his empty social pronouncements stick as more than fleeting entertainment, and when he starts dissing his hooky betters Courtney Love and Beck as "fakes," there's little to do but laugh. At him, not with him. --Rickey Wright --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Spin
With New Radicals, [Gregg] Alexander takes a potentially messier Anglophile tack, flinging words like the Boo Radleys or Pulp, and aiming for harmonic epiphanies that approximate Prefab Sprout's intelligent sparkle.... But more often, New Radicals seem like enthusiastically unbuttoned Americans schooled in style councils and turtlenecks. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Much more than "You Get..."
This is a modern pop classic.

5 out of 5 stars "Ramsey's is the best".......2007-06-15

I thought a little Nacho Libre to start it off would be good. Anyway this album is so good, I am pissed they disbanded, I hope some day he does another album.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!!!.......2007-04-22

I purchased this CD when it first came out and still listen to it almost 8 years later. Their sound is unique and simply put, this album rocks! Too bad they decided to disband. With music like this, these guys could have become SUPERSTARS! You will not be disappointed!

A+++++

5 out of 5 stars Each song a masterpiece.......2007-02-24

Like many people who bought "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too", I was drawn in by the hopeful and inspiring "You Get What You Give"... I've had this CD for nine years now and it's one I could listen to over and over again and never tire of. From the jubilant "Mother We Just Can't Get Enough" to the lovely "Crying Like A Church On Monday", every song is worth repeated listens. Standouts include the aforementioned hit single; the insanely catchy "Jehovah Made This Whole Joint For You"; "Someday We'll Know"- a beautiful, moody tune which has been covered quite a bit considering its relative obscurity; the offbeat, almost experimental sounding title track, with its bizarre acoustic guitar riff, wholly improvised lyrics and trippy keyboards; and "Flowers" because of the contrast between the chilled out verse and the explosive, unorthodox but nonetheless gorgeous chord progression used in the chorus. One of my favorite things about "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too" is the heavy use of piano- it's more of a lead instrument in this case, with guitars providing background. It's a shame Gregg Alexander decided to dissolve this project because the world needs more music like this.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs of all time.......2004-04-20

This CD is my the most emotional disc i own. it's ability to touch me simply hasn't been matched by anything else i have. Mr Alexander's heart and soul comes through in every song, and it is just an experience to revel in.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you very much Mr. Alexander!.......2004-02-19

This cd came out when I was in military tech school for the USAF. This cd made everything bad, seem a little better.
This cd makes me want to hug Greg Alexander, and thank him for helping me out so much with his music.
I'll always own this album, and never get sick of it.
    You should too.

5 out of 5 stars The 90's weren't too good, with the exception of this.......2002-02-04

This is what music should be. Straightforward without being boring or dated, intelligent lyrics, and positive messages. Sequencers and sampling had overtaken the 90's to the point where I didn't like the majority of what came out.The warm, natural feeling of real instruments was gone in favor of people who had very little talent and really COULDNT play an instrument. When I first heard You Get What You Give, I thought "Wow, that's a great song, I'll buy the CD and hope for the best" This album takes a little bit of time to sink in, but if you keep listening to it,and reading the lyrics along with each song, you will love it all except the title track. Now the reason I bought the CD, is actually my least favorite track. Flowers is a heartfelt piece, as well as Hope I DIdnt Just Give Away The Ending.Listen to this a few songs at a time, and it will become one of your faves.

    5 out of 5 stars It's good, man........2001-05-07

Made for a woman, but I like it too!

    4 out of 5 stars damn woman...........2000-03-25

Okay, I bought this CD purely on the merit of having heard the second track, and I feel it has been THE most worthwhile invesetment of my life! Every single track on this album is good. The music is great and the lyrics are so full of emotion and feelings, something often missing in modern music. If you want an album which you will never want to stop playing BUY THIS
