Electric Honey
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
On their 1996 album, Fever In Fever Out, cool New York hip-hop/funk-pop combo Luscious Jackson took a break from their dance-till-you-drop edict and addressed some serious relationship issues, recruiting producer Daniel Lanois to provide the appropriate murky, atmospheric vibe. Well, either that project purged the group of its sadness or the disc's less-than-spectacular sales prodded LJ to return to their more ebullient roots. Whatever the case, Electric Honey is a fluid, spirited release that expands upon the formula of 1994's Natural Ingredients. Jill Cunniff and Gabby Glaser's vocals have never sounded as sleek or sexy, and their playing has improved considerably. So have their songwriting chops, allowing hip-hop, funk, electronica, pop, and alternative rock sounds to coexist harmoniously within the same sonic framework. "Nervous Breakthrough" bumps and grinds to skankin' guitars, trumpets, and a throbbing electronic beat; "Alien Lover" pumps up the funk quotient and tosses in some otherworldly keyboards; and "Sexy Hypnotist" seduces the mind with a buoyant pop rhythm, engaging harmonies, and some compelling flute trills. And the Luscious girls earn extra points for recruiting the ultimate party girl, Deborah Harry, on "Fantastic Fabulous," whose title accurately sums up the entire record. --Jon Wiederhorn --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Fantastic, fabulous.......2006-11-24
1999's Electric Honey is the last effort (so far) of a super talented, under promoted band, and is their best. I don't know if the departure of keyboardist Vivian Trimble after the previous album was the beginning of the end, but if anything the musical quality is even better on this one! Trying to name standout songs is difficult because they are great all the way through. Also, even with its consistently sophisticated, sexy sound, it's truly right for "all ages." There's nothing you would be embarrassed playing for your mom or young child. In fact it's on high rotation now on my iPod as the favorite (anti-crying remedy) of my 1-month old daughter!
If you visit the MySpace pages of Jill Cunniff, Gabby Glaser, and Kate Schellenbach, it looks like these talented women are working on a Luscious Jackson revival. Apparently there's going to be new material in the next couple of years. I for one will be looking out for a repeat performance of this outstanding record!
how old are these girlz now?.......2006-10-30
despite probabley(ney definitely!) needing to lenghten their mini skirts down to thier toes and wear high necked collars, these girls still rock out and being ten years older doesn't make them less vigorous. With out Vivian, they, I suppose, focus more on the rock and less on the Pop and technobabble side of it. The 1991 albumn where they were teenie boppers themselves is a joke in comparison to later. Of course Natural Ingrediants is still my fav, with "Naked Eye" close seconds behind. Don't try sampling these on Media player here, it just does an MS "talk fu" crash of yer system save em to Real One then play offline.
Feels like Devotion!!!!!!.......2006-05-24
Luscious Jackson may be well considered the sweetest version of the beastie boys as versatile as innovative as the beasties are, Luscious Jackson delivers funny, sweet and experimental music, very 90s, very alternative, very entertaining, in "Electric Honey" sadly their last release the Jacksons became a trio after the departure of the gorgeous keyboardist they had, this didnt affected sustancialy and "Electric Honey" is perhaps their best release, check out "Lady Fingers" , "sexy hipnotist", and my favorite "Devotion"

Electric Friends.......2005-11-30
Funky.......2005-10-07
I'm a true blue LJ fan and with its funky, groovy-licious sound, I jez cant' get enough of 'em. It's been on my cd player for 2 months now.

More live Muddy!.......2004-07-14
This album was recorded in "Europe, early 80s", according to the cover (that probably means 1979 or 1980), and the band is the same one that backed Muddy Waters on almost all of his recordings between 1973 and 1980.
"Honey Bee" (which is sometimes advertised as "Sail On") doesn't really add anything new and radical to Muddy's legacy; almost all of these 16 songs have been available live for a long time, and often in several different versions. But it's still a fine album, of course, live Muddy is almost always very good.
The sound is not truly stellar, but the Muddy Waters Band was the best in the business at that time. Pianist Joe "Pinetop" Perkins is excellent all the way through, and he sounds particularly inspired on "Garbage Man", "Long Distance Call" and on a great, swinging rendition of "Blow Wind Blow". Wonderful guitar solos by Bob Margolin and Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson on "Hoochie Coochie Man" as well.
Many of these numbers are a little more laid-back than on most other live recordings, and a few songs, such as "Trouble No More", "Baby Please Don't Go", and "Can't Get No Grindin'" have been released in significantly better live renditions. But the excellent rhythm section always contributes a deep, swaggering groove, and this cool version of the title track is among the best I have heard.
"Honey Bee" (the album) even includes a few rarities, such as a great band-backed version of the early Muddy-single "Train Fare Home", a rendition of saxist J.T. Brown's soulful "Goin' Home", and the jazzy "After Hours", a smoky slow instrumental in the vein of T-Bone Walker. "Off The Wall" is harpist Jerry Portnoy's muscular take on another instrumental number, this one by Muddy's former harpist Little Walter Jacobs.
Casual blues fans won't need to rush out and secure themselves a copy of this album...as long as you have "Muddy Waters At Newport 1960" and "Mojo: The Live Collection", you'll be alright. And Muddy Waters couldn't control the slide like he used to after a seruous traffic accident, which means that his solos aren't all that they could have been (he sounds pretty good on "Train Fare Home", though).
But serious fans will certainly want a copy of this enjoyable live recording from the Austrian Wolf label - their second, following the equally enjoyable "Live Recordings 1965-1973".
Not an essential purchase, but a nice listen all the same.
outstanding.......1999-07-22

The Dutch rule the blues.......2000-11-28
This is an amazing cd. You can't believe this is a dutch bluesband. Their sound is so original and authentic, that you would believe they grew up on the southside jamming with Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Little Walter and al them cats. But it's not all tradition that these four guys deliver. With respect for the roots they take the blues to the millenium in a way only the Red Devils managed to do. So buy this cd, you won't regret it and then try to get a copy of their latest album called "Sprechen sie, senorita" on wich they take it all a step further and leave all the big names in the blues way behind.

Worry-Free Commitement.......2001-11-21
From the gentle opening strums of the title track, "Buttermilk Channel" is all about how commited you are to listening. Adam's sublime guitar work and compositions pull you in as deeply as you want to go; whether it's background music for your dinner party or the engaging and stimulating soundtrack for your quiet day at home. Casual listeners (my friends) and music geeks (me) find drummer Kenny Wolleson, organist Larry Goldings, and Adam's gentle melodic lines, sparely-voiced chords, and generous solo space always makes "Buttermilk Channel" a great spin. Each player's work echoes their influences, yet speaks clearly in their own voice --- modern sounds with plenty of vintage soul. Another plus, you'll definately impress friends and family with your sophisticated taste at gift-giving time (hint). Catch Adam's live show if you can and dig how each piece has evolved.
Push play and walk away - every song is beautiful........2001-11-12
Once in a while the perfect disc comes along, and this is it. In the car or with the lights down low, Buttermilk Channel's smooth rhythms, tender, often-funky grooves and cooking solos will charm any music fan. Each composition blends gospelesque organ, wispy snare and Adam's soulful guitar into a dreamy jazz experience that creates an atmosphere of having nowhere to be with all day to get there. Easy, soft, subtle and superb, the record gets better each time I hear it.
Flows, but with an edge.......2001-11-08
This disc is full of great songs with beautifully infectious melodies. A nice mellow flow, but also enough edge and great musicianship to keep you interested (especially when you get some time alone and listen to it loud!). Every time I listen to Buttermilk Channel, I notice something new... Levy's amazing rhythm guitar behind the organ solos, or the fact that the sweet melody on "Orange You Glad" seems to be phrased slightly different each time around. A great disc from a great guitarist!
Satisfying across the spectrum.......2001-08-19
If you can't afford a vacation this year, invest in Buttermilk Channel instead. This luscious collection of everything from righteous blues to soft, torchy jazz ambience makes the city seem shinier, hipper - and suddenly there's no pressing need to be anywhere other than exactly where you are. But be warned - if you aren't up for a mellow and completely satisfying experience, if you aren't ready to hear a guitar, organ, and snare sound exactly as God intended them to sound together, this album is not for you.
