After several recordings of American popular music, Te Kanawa has become a very effective crooner, phrasing with heretofore missing panache. The easy, jazzy Riddle-like arrangements are bouncy and appealing. But after 15 selections, the mysterious dissatisfaction of eating Chinese food and feeling hungry an hour later remains. Tunick writes in his program notes that "the waltz ballads ... are poignant and moving, but never stray into sentimentality." But why not? A little mushiness would serve this recording well, and also contribute to a desperately lacking variety of interpretation. Still, the voice is consistently gorgeous; it would just be nice to distinguish the happy songs from the sad. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

5 out of 5 stars Irving Berlin at his best.......2007-06-26

Kiri's glorious voice interprets Irving Berlin masterpieces beautifully with expression and respect for these American favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Get's my vote!.......2004-04-03

OK. Full disclosure: I'm one of those helpless souls who is just madly in love with the sounds that emanate from Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's vocal chords. I suppose there are many artists who can interpret Irving Berlin's songs with more, what's the word, authenticity?

And I've heard many of them, and I love their work.

But Kiri Te Kanawa is different. She was given one of the most beautiful instruments in the history of sound recordings. Thank God the recording companies figured out what they had and put her in front of a microphone early and often.

We have had a rare opportunity to experience a great artist from almost the start of her career clear through to what now must be it's final stages.

I, for one, feel privileged.

Thank you, Dame Kiri. The world is a little better place because of you.

5 out of 5 stars Jazzy and Beautiful.......2002-09-01

This album exemplifies Kiri's amazing, vast dose of talent for musical interpretation. Though I tend to enjoy mostly classical music, this album has opened doors to a wonderful world of classical-jazz, which I find quite beautiful! Perhaps for some, it is an aquired taste...yet I was hooked the moment I heard track one...and have since become quite the "modern Kiri" fan!~Brava once again~

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2002-05-14

If you like Irving Berlin and Kiri Te Kanawa you'll probably enjoy this album as much as I do!

I can imagine Nick and Nora Charles listening to this at one of Nick's favorite dives! It will transport you to a sophisticated time and place that may have never existed except in literature and debutante coming out parties.

Gatsby would have loved it, and surely would have invited Kiri to all his parties!

1 out of 5 stars Simply Dreadful.......2001-01-17

Just terrible! Although her voice has mellowed and is quite beautiful, Ms Te Kanawa has absolutely no instinct or feel for this distinctly American music. She's just lost in her own peculiar Kiwi wonderland. She is not aided but what have to be some of the worst arrangements of this music ever recorded.

Her version of "What'll I do" alone earns her a place on the top ten list of abominable recordings of American music.

5 out of 5 stars EXTRAORDINARY - Duran Duran goes Victorian.......2004-07-28

If you enjoy classical music and can appreciate the modern turns being given to the format (by groups such as BOND), you will LOVE this Duran tribute.

I loved the song selection - a few deep cuts chosen won't be readily recognizable by the average fan, but true Duranies will get a kick out of choices like "Meet El Presidente".

Since alot of Duran's music was written with horns or strings included, it wasn't that much of a leap to imagine the entire song done by a string ensemble, such as "Ordinary World."

This is such an interesting and well-done cd. It is wonderful to listen to and you'll probably find yourself singing along to the more popular tunes, like "Rio."

Loved the concept, loved the song selection, loved the cd!

2 out of 5 stars Thorougly nonplussed.......2004-07-22

This string tribute to Duran Duran is rather lackluster. It's not that the musicians aren't talented; it's just that Duran Duran's music - or at least most of the songs chosen for this release - doesn't translate well to the string-quartet format. A collection featuring all Duran ballads (Midnight Sun, Michael, Pop Trash Movie, Land, Winter Marches On, Matter of Feeling, etc.) would have worked better. If you're one of those fans who feels the need to own every release related to Duran Duran, it's not a terrible purchase to make, but for the casual fan, it's not worth it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a great single.......2005-08-01

This one is not getting the attention it deserves. Radio programmers today seem to be stuck in a rut of teen pop, mindless novelty dance songs, and trite hip-hop/ rap records. I suppose they are ultimately giving the fans what they are asking for. But this lovely ballad blows just about anything I've heard in a long time right out of the water. And I do quite enjoy the Harry Peat remix. It is JUST groovy enough, and adds a nice touch to an otherwise rock-ish ballad. Great lyrics. Very nice production. Subtle but powerful. The return of the orginal Duran Duran lineup hasn't stirred up nearly as much attention in the USA as it has in Great Britain, where they are consistantly selling out huge arenas like they did in their early to mid Eighties heyday, that that's really our loss. The Astronaut album from which this came is a really great album, and surprised even me, exceeding my expectations. And this song might just be my favourite one of the bunch. Their best ballad since "Ordinary World" snuck out of nowhere in 1993 and took the world by storm, heralding the second comback of DD. I had hoped this would be the 3rd, but the realist and cynic in me understands that they aren't the flavour of the month anymore. Just a damn fine pop/rock band doing what they do best. By all means worth every penny of the import price.

2 out of 5 stars Great song- but extras are unfulfilling.......2005-03-16

Being a Duran completist, I had to have both parts to this cd single. Sadly, the Harry Peat Remix of this amazing song lacks any energy. It rips the passion & urgency completely out & turns "What Happens Tomorrow" into a trancey, chilled-out lounge-fest. Boring.

"Silent Icy River" is less than 3 minutes long and is only a fraction of a song. It's merely a piece of music built around the 3rd verse of "What Happens Tomorrow," which was ultimately edited from the album version. Interesting & artsy- but a true B-side would have been nice.

The video for "What Happens Tomorrow" is also included here. A young couple in love lay atop their car in an empty mall parking lot & look at the stars. The starry sky then turns into Duran Duran. The band looks great, but this is not exactly their brightest concept.

I love Duran Duran, but someone needs to hook them up with better remixers & video directors. This does not live up to their legacy.

4 out of 5 stars off the quite superb Astronaut album.......2005-03-09

Certainly not my first choice for a single, as there are a number of other songs I would have preferred off the quite superb Astronaut album, but there is no doubt that 'What Happens Tomorrow' is certainly very radio friendly, which should ensure that it maintains the bands 3rd comeback.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great single.......2005-02-13

"What Happens Tomorrow" is a great song, and it's nice to see that radio is giving it a chance. The first Duran single ("Sunrise") from their newly released (2004) album ASTRONAUT (which features the original lineup) was a hit, and this song deserves the same treatment. "What Happens Tomorrow" reminds me a lot of "Ordinary World"...not by the sound of it, but in the way the song starts off simply but builds to a dramatic finish. The lyrics also seem to collect a lot of the emotion and feelings of these uncertain times.

"Silent Icy River" is basically something the band seems to have concocted in the studio...playing around with different sounds and snippets, but the lyric is quite catchy. Simon LeBon repeats it over and over, and the middle part of the song includes the lyrics that were dropped from "What Happens Tomorrow"....the 'time is a ribbon' part.

I'm not usually a big fan of remixes, but the treatment "What Happens Tomorrow" gets in this remix is very listenable, so it's a nice rarity to have.

This is recommended if you can find it, it's strictly a European import. If you can't, the ASTRONAUT album is highly recommended...it beat my (and many professional music critics) expectations. By the way, if you can see these guys live...be sure to attend. They are an excellent live band!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars They are back!.......2007-03-27

This is the best song of the Astronaut album. A mature song about growing up in a troubled world. After nonsense lyrics, like Electric Barbarella, this song is a great reward!

1 out of 5 stars about the Eric Prydz remix and the German release.......2005-05-05

Following the review on the remix of "(Reach Up For The) Sunrise", there is a German edition of the cd-single "What Happens Tomorrow" (ASIN: B0006H2W4O) which includes all songs on both UK editions:

    1. What Happens Tomorrow 4:06
    2. Silent Icy River 2:54
    3. What Happens Tomorrow (Harry Peat Mix) 4:05
    4. (Reach Up For The) Sunrise (Eric Prydz Mix) 3:36.

Although the inside cover says the Eric Prydz Mix lasts 6:46, it is actually an edited version of the original remix. The full 6-minute version is only available on 12". The video is not on the German edition, but on the UK cd with 3 songs.

Spreading songs (edited and extended) and videos on several editions has become part of a new marketing strategy. With the development of cd-copying and file-sharing, some people in the music industry realized it was going to be hard to get back the lost customers. As a result, they decided to sell twice, three times, the same product to the people who have kept buying cds. Hence, the 2-cd UK editions and albums which are released several times with different songs.

2 out of 5 stars "Sunrise" remix- NOT worth it!.......2005-03-01

I LOVE Duran Duran, but I wish I had my money back for this import single. "What Happens Tomorrow" is an incredible song, but I bought this for the Eric Prydz Mix of "Sunrise," hoping to finally hear a club mix that actually included the vocals. (The first batch of remixes found on the "Sunrise" single all neglected to include Simon's full vocals.) Disappointed again! The beat to this version is great, but it is only 3 & a half minutes long & features only a few background vocals at the beginning. I guess there will never be a full-out vocal club mix available on CD. The closest thing I know of is the Jason Nevins Mix on the "Queer Eye" soundtrack.

Bottom line: Someone needs to take lessons from bands like Erasure, who still put out singles with multiple remixes & non-album songs that are well worth the money. 13 bucks is just too much for an album version that I already have & a short, vocal-less club mix. Shame on Epic records & Duran Duran!
