The Brian Setzer Orchestra
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Brian Setzer has been infatuated with '50s fashions ever since he launched the Long Island, New York, rockabilly trio the Stray Cats in the early '80s. Now, however, his '50s fanaticism has taken an unexpected left turn into the big-band pop-jazz of Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. The Brian Setzer Orchestra reintroduces the former Stray Cat as the crooner, guitarist and leader of a 17-piece horn band. Nonetheless, there's more to this project than the usual Harry Connick Jr. or Linda Ronstadt nostalgia exercise. For one thing, Setzer brings the guitar out of the big-band background to become a lead instrument, not just to imitate jazz horn lines but to add jump-blues and rockabilly licks to the mix. Although Setzer sings numbers associated with Cole and Bobby Darin--as well as some originals in the Sinatra style--the album is less interesting when it's paying tribute to big-band crooning than when it's mixing that genre with early rock & roll. --Geoffrey Himes --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Customer Reviews:
how fun this cd is you must discover for yourself.......2005-09-28
I cannot describe how energetic and fun these two discs are from beginning to end. your collection will be greatly enhanced if you get this. it is kind of big band rock, it rules, and it has all the songs that Setzer is famous for on it. just go get it right now!
BSO-LIVE.......2005-09-03
AS IS THE NORM WITH BRIAN SETZER, THERE IS NO LACK OF ENERGY. YOU CAN NEVER GET ENOUGH OF THIS UPBEAT, TOE TAPPING MUSIC THAT REMINDS YOU OF MUSIC LIKE GOD INTENDED IT - AS OPPOSED TO THE "RAP CRAP" OF TODAY.
The Ultimate Collection.......2005-08-22
I'd like to say I've listened to this, but it was a gift for someone else. However, since my son is a fan, I'm sure he loves it!
Brian Stezer Orchestra: Ultimate Collection, Recorded Live.......2005-08-05
I was a Stray Cats' fan back in the day, and liked the song that was used in the GAP commercial, and wanted to get this 2 disk set after hearing part of it on classic rock. Definitely worthwhile, and it's not a real greatest hits, but each disk is from a concert, the first at Montreal at the start of the tour, the other at Tokyo at the end of their tour in the early 90's. A good combo of Stray Cats hits, older songs (Route 66, Get me to the Church on Time). Great use of horns to supplement a rocking sound. A great addition to my collection!
Crank up the volume and close your eyes baby!.......2004-11-17
There is NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING like the BSO live in concert, but this collection is as close as you can get to the absolute bliss, power, and pure adrenaline of BSO in person.
It is also a chance to experience the growth and polishing of the band over the years. Disk One seems to have a slightly odd sound mix and is a little rough around the edges. I don't recall that from the concert, but memory fades with age...and it was just such a thrill to see and hear people make such amazing music! Thank you Brian!!!
I do, however distinctly remember the Phoenix concert that was similar to Disk Two...and this is pretty darn close. Brian's musical and vocal talent is truly a gift. It is reproduced beautifully with all of the highs, lows, growls, and yodels! Bernie Dresel is amazing as usual. He is the king of drummers and has some great features on Disk 2 that will confound and bewilder anyone who understand what it takes to produce that percussion.
Since you can't buy a lifetime of live BSO concerts (too bad), buy this collection. It is a totally different experience than the studio albums and worth every cent!

Brian Setzer's Dig That Crazy Christmas is proof that behind every rockabilly hepcat is a big band leader. Mixing originals with seasonal faves, Setzer and his orchestra manage to swing, rock, roll and otherwise nail such gems as "Dig That Crazy Santa Claus," "Zat You Santa Claus" (popularized by Louis Armstrong at Christmas long past) and "Cool Yule." He even tackles an instrumental arrangement of "My Favorite Things" that allows him to show off his guitar chops to great effect. Even the unexpected "Angels We Have Heard on High"--played at a galloping tempo, with an angelic chorus and loads of shiny brass--fits into Setzer's big bad sack. His original tunes (and seasonal rewrite of "in the Mood" called "Getting' in the Mood for Christmas") such as "Santa Arrives in A Hot Rod" and "Hey Santa' will be right at home, or in the cocktail lounge, or that New Year's Eve Party that you will have trouble remembering. Recommended fun. --Martin Keller

Fun!.......2007-03-06
Upbeat and a fun twist to "not so classic" Christmas tunes. I was able to see Brian Setzer's Christmas concert in 2006 and it was fantastic. If you're looking for something that's fun to listen to and will get you energized and in the holiday mood, this is a great choice.
Yes ! Dig that Santa Swing !.......2007-01-18
Now this is exceptional. A need to have for all Stray Cats around the planet. Go ahead and BUY one !
Good, but not as good as his first........2007-01-16
All the same traditional songs are being played all season, try Brian's (mostly) upbeat energetic versions, with slightly different arrangements.
A Christmas Gem.......2006-12-22
Brian Setzer has created a Christmas CD that not only inspires the season, but may very well define the Christmas Big Band genre. There's not a cut on this recording that doesn't elicit some sort of joyous response to the season and exhibit the huge amount of fun that the band seems to be having.
A few favorites include "Hey Santa", if only for it's "Hot Buttered Rum" line, "Gettin in the Mood for Christmas", his rewrite of "In the Mood", and an amazing boogie version of "Angels we Have Heard on High".
But All the tunes here are fantastic.
This is a MUST have for fans of rockabilly, Big Band, or of course, a truly fun Christmas season.
Brian Setzer Orchestra - 'Dig That Crazy Christmas' (Surfdog).......2006-11-15
The former Stray Cats frontman had sure made a second career out of his making CD's that feature that 'big band' sound.I usually don't care for Christmas albums,of ANY kind. But,I thought I'd borrow a friend's copy to see what it was like.Sort of took notice on cuts here like "Dig That Santa Claus","Let It Snow!Let It Snow!Let It Snow!","Hey Santa" and his holiday tribute to Glenn Miller, with "Getting In The Mood"-even though I thought this track was a bit corny,it still showcases Setzer's talent.Heard that his 'Christmas Extravaganza' DVD is really good.Obviously,Stray Cats die-hards and Xmas music completists should get more out of this CD than I did.Might make a nice gift for an old school fan.

Swing and Fun.......2007-04-05
We are using one of the songs on this CD as our wedding song. This is a great CD, great for dancing.
Elegant Style.......2007-01-20
Brian Setzer is one of the finest entertainers ever. He has not only a highly developed talent, but also ultra style. Love this CD.
Lady Luck.......2004-06-24
The first album of Brian Setzer with Orchestra. Half covers and half originals. Beautiful Semptember Skies is the one he wrote, and so is Straight Up, that is used in movie Mask. "Bring That Bottle Down is never recorded in studio by the Stray Cats but it was their live hit. So here it is fo the first time.
We can find here Al Jolson, Richard Berry, Vince Taylor, Carl Perkins and fabulous cover of Route 66!
Good.......2004-04-04
This is a good Brian Setzer CD if you like your music a bit more mellow. It has some very good songs - Setzer is extremely talented.
Good, but not his best swing..........2004-03-18
Don't get me wrong, this is a good recording by the absolute master! But, if you are looking for a more rockin' time look elsewhere (in Brian's catalog, of course!). If you are a big fan, buy this. If not, buy a later Setzer Orchestra cd, & work your way to this.

Great Swinging Party CD.......2005-11-28
Brian Setzer's interpretation of these standards is great. His rockabilly-infused big band sound breathes new life into some songs that have never been my personal favorites. However, while I do not doubt his artistry and vision, I do wish he'd revive a few standards that are not quite as obscure. Still, this a great effort.
this is NOT swing.......2005-02-15
I bought this cd because of a review I read saying this is modern swing - no way is this swing - it's bill haley/elvis sound-a-like modern rock 'n' roll - if that floats your boat you will love this. I hate it because his voice is really scratchy and he is a limited guitar player - he has the standard bag of rock riffs but no way does he have the ability to play swing guitar.
So, beware reviews, and thank you but I'll stick with my swing : Squirrel nut zippers and Cherry Poppin Daddies
Still Jumpin', Jivin', and Wailin'.......2004-10-15
The Brian Setzer Orchestra has done it again and again and again!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I got "The Dirty Boogie" CD, it's like a dirty boogie showdown for the one hell of a night you won't forget. A outstanding, tremendous, amazing "SuperHigh Octane" CD like never ever forget.
Excellent CD.......2004-10-07
This is my first Brian Setzer album, but I've been a fan of his since his Stray Cat days. I have to say it's well worth it. You can't help but tap your toes or dance in your chair when listening to this album...it's ON!
What a great "introduction" to BSO!
GREAT CD.......2003-08-07
Love Setzer. I had bought some of the cassettes used to compile this "Best of". Wore them out.
This CD is PACKED!! You definately get your money's worth. All of my favorites on one CD. It seems like it goes for ever. 23 songs on one CD.

Brian Setzer may have been vilified by purists and progressives for daring to "modernize" rockabilly and swing, but the pompadoured Long Islander has now laughed all the way to the bank twice at their expense--and in two different decades, no less. Like its predecessor, the surprise hit The Dirty Boogie, this collection won't win points with music academics, but then Setzer's having too much fun to give a flying (musical) fifth. Though he clearly idolizes his forerunners, Setzer never lets his reverence for form get in the way of his sense of joy, committing frolicsome heresy on some classics along the way (injecting surprisingly effective looped samples and hip-hop beats into "Pennsylvania 6-5000" and giving "In the Mood" a rap!). His take on Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife" is a bit slavish, only reinforcing the hit's perfection. But as he's admitted, Setzer's a rockabilly writer/guitarist by nature, a notion reinforced here by his own tunes and a flashy take on the instrumental "Caravan." His band charts are both serviceable and modern, but might benefit from a different arranger's perspective. And if his notion of fusing swing and rockabilly still seems marketing driven, recall that this is largely a joyously amped-up version of what Bill Haley was up to way back in his pre-"Rock Around the Clock" days. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Solid swingin sound.......2007-01-14
I was a stray cats fan, and it was the Gap ad with Jump Jive and Wail that clued me in to BSO. Great sound, although their live double disk from Montreal and Tokyo is solid five star, desert island quality. Well worth it, but one of the few bands that actually sound better live than in studio.
Really underrated.......2006-12-20
I don't understand all the negative comments regarding Vavoom. It's an excellent cd and I recommend it for any swing/rockabilly fans. Ride like Thunder is an excellent rockabilly song and I think the electronic samples throughout the cd were a great idea.
Hey Brian, I Love you Man !!!!!.......2006-07-13
What can I say from Brian?
This cd is great !!! For me is in the same level of "The Dirty Boogie" or maybe is better !!!
I'm a guitar student and have 20 years old but I love Brian's music because this remember me better epochs and also has a magic touch that make it so special.
You can't give to this cd less than 4 stars !!!!
Vavoom!.......2006-03-03
Great CD. Kids are dancing to 2 songs on it in the dance recital this year. We like all the songs on the CD.
Find a soft place to land.......2005-01-08
From the "Stray Cats" to today's "BSO" Brian has remained consistant. Either extreem... Totally hot or totally cold. I personally like his covers the best. Put on you crash helmet! I would like to see BSO do an album of christian music... adapt some of the traditional hymns to 50s and 60s Doo Wopp melodies. That would "Rock this Church" and make some of the fuddy duddies flip their toupees. If anyone could pull it off, Brian could. A double dog dare Brian!

Pleasant and fun Christmas CD. A good holiday listen for fans of big band/swing/boogie woogie, etc. Good companion piece to the superior WE THREE KINGS by Reverend Horton Heat. YEA!
Groovy.......2007-01-15
This CD has exceeded my expectations of Brian Setzer's holiday songs. I love this CD and played it often during the holidays. If you like upbeat holiday music, this is the CD to buy!

Itwm at good price, sent fast and well
Really Good.......2005-12-30
Whether you are a fun of rock a billy or Christmas songs, this cd is for you. High energy, the tempo keeps you moving the entire cd. Excellent versions of classic Christmas songs in a new rock way without taking away from the song itself. Outstanding musicianship throughout the cd.
Setzer Makes Christmas Fun Again!.......2005-12-29
I've had this cd since it was first released and I never tire of listening. I can't wait to bring it out and pop into my cd player every season. This is not your run of the mill "Chestnuts Roasting" holiday collection. Setzer starts fast and never lets up. "Jingle Bells", "Boogie Woogie Santa", and "Winter Wonderland" sizzle with great big band swing arrangements, of which Setzer is a master. "Blue Christmas" is basic rockabilly at it's best. In "Santa Claus is Back in Town" the guitar slinger shows his blues side; it's raw and powerful. "Baby it"s Cold Outside" with Ann-Margret is so hot, you might need to go roll in the snow afterwards. More fun follows with "The Nutcracker", "Man with the Bag", and "Sleigh Ride". "So They Say it's Christmas" (the only Setzer composition on this cd) and "O Holy Night" will not disappoint. Buy this and, like a kid, start counting the days 'til December.

Borrowing arrangements and influences from Lionel Hampton, Al Hirt, Les Brown, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and even Kay Starr, Setzer's holiday disc is like a vintage car, custom-made to delight his longtime jitterbugging audience. The focal point of this hard-driving '40s retro-chic creation, however, is the bandleader's fiery guitar. As a player, Setzer is even more versatile now than during his rockabilly days fronting the Stray Cats. Granted, he'd be the first to admit that no one can top Elvis Presley on "Blue Christmas" or "Santa Claus Is Back in Town." Nevertheless, Setzer's solos on both could lead one to fantasize about how far into the stratosphere the King might've taken those songs if Setzer had been around to play guitar for him. Elvis's Viva Las Vegas costar Ann-Margret shows up to duet on "Baby, It's Cold Outside," and Setzer finally gets to release a rendition of his own "So They Say It's Christmas," covered by Lou Rawls on the Jingle All the Way soundtrack. To paraphrase another holiday hipster, it's awfully close to Coolsville. --Bill Holdship

Brian Setzer meets the Boogie Woogie Santa!.......2007-06-28
I cannot belive I went to high school with this guy! I noticed the big band influence that accents this album based on my experiences observing him perform in junior high school, and the influences of British musicians such as Dave Edmonds and others. If you don't have any other Brian Setzer albums, at least have this one in your collection!!
Brian Setzer and Christmas are made for each other.......2005-12-01
Brian Setzer with this Christmas CD is a lot of fun. Brian uses his usual lightning fast guitar and his Rock and Roll roots to come up with something that not only sounds great but manages to get you into the Christmas spirit as well.
He uses a very high energy version of Jingle Bells to open the CD.
Winter Wonderland is another great song, and again Brian at his best.
Blue Christmas is similar to the version that Elvis did, but he does have his own signature on this one.
The Man with the Bag is another fun song to listen.
Sleigh Ride is another great song.
O Holy Night surprisingly comes off very well.
Brian Setzer with the help of his rockin orchestra, have put togehter a great Christmas CD...........enjoy
Rockin around the christmas three. Brian Setzer does it for sure.......2005-11-28
This is a real treat. To mix bigband beat with a classical "sunstudio" sound picture, lift this album way above average. Brian Setzer voice is glorious sometimes and he gives flavour to upbeat tempo songs, and the more slower songs . The duet with Ann-Margret Track 6 Baby Its Cold Outside, is a winner, and you dont need to heat up the temperature in your living room. It`s enough to listen to this one. Im impressed how Setzer and his Orchestra can create his own identity and signature on many of this songs. Another winner is certainly Track 9 Sleigh Ride, with a swing tempo up beat, and a glorius rock and roll guitar solo which just blow you away. To nearly end the album is Track 11 O Holy night, shows what voice Setzer realy has. Full of emotions with a big E. All in all this is an CD to rockin around the christmas tree too, and also to relax too. A great collection from The Brian Setzer Orchestra .
What Kind Of Music?.......2004-12-09
My sister and I were discussing this CD and could not determine what kind of music Brian Setzer has made this season brighter with...
Is it rockabilly? Big band? What?
The lyrics in this Christmas special argue that it's a form popularized in the mid-to-late 50s. It represents a transition into the rock and roll classic era, no question, but so many of those artists had by then abandoned the big band sound.
Anyway, it would not be Christmas without the leering allusions of this funny, lively album. The production value is pure Cinerama, and you won't be bored with the adaptations. The only cut I had a too-hard time with was the Nutcracker variations; somehow they reminded me too much of the Spike Jones version which, by comparison, sounded better.
"Tis the season."
A Classic Christmas Album.......2004-08-21
All of the tracks are hits and make you want to get into the Christmas spirt; Swing-wise that is. Brian Setzer has done it again with another hit record and leaves me looking forward to what he does next. I would call him the artist of the past and this century. It's clear why the orchestra was nominated for another grammy for it's amazing take on The Nutcracker Suite, and leaves me swingin' in high joy that they win it. The album is classic and will be passed on for ages new and old, enjoy.

Expensive, but great to have........2007-06-29
If you are a BSO enthusiast or Setzer, Stray Cats, or even just an enthusiast of great music, then this is the CD for you! If you only want the hits and don't want to do the import extras, then get the title called "Jump, Jive & Wail- The Best of BSO". This has 4 unreleased tracks that are quite stellar works. Especially the "Stray Cat Strut" piece. If ONLY they did "Sexy +17" on record!
This is the best of the best of's!

Best Of Big Band.......2005-10-18
This compilation is fabulous. Unlike the american compilation here you get all the hits and four newly recorded songs. Stray Cat Strut (which you can find only here) in a orchestra version, El Diablo (a latin actually salsa song), Sexy Sexy and Scatman Jack are another masterpieces of Brian Setzer.
Compilation worth to have!

Customer Reviews:
Rock-A-Beatin' Boogie.......2004-06-17
Some songs are really great ("Mack the Knife", "Caravan", "From Here to Eternity", "Rock-A-Beatin' Boogie"). My favourite here is "The Footloose Doll"!
Album is produced by Glen Ballard (?) and Peter Collins! Two pop producers and that's why some songs are overproduced "Pennsylvania 6-5000", "Gettin' in the Mood", "That's the Kind of Sugar Papa Likes" (featuring 14 Karat Soul) & "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" (14 Karat Soul are here again on backings. And yes this is Queen's hit).
too expensive..........2003-12-03
Wow save your money, this is not worth it, this is really bad rockabilly because there is rap, hip hop and even techno in the mix, don't put your mind and body thru this, you deserve better try setzer's Dirty Boogie cd instead.
Jumpin' in the House!.......2000-09-02
Oh, Heck yeah! As usual, Brian just rocks! As far as I'm concerned, music's only purpose is to get you up and dancing. This album does it times ten. Go Brian! When's the next album??
americano.......2000-08-23
it's a good hipshakin'swinging song.the text is simple to sing and the musik makes my head go crazy.i love the sound of brian's guitar and the rumbing slappin'bass.that all makes me feel o.k.
