Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Selections from the Greatest Voice of the Last Hundred Years.......2007-03-13

Mario Lanza was, arguably, the greatest tenor and greatest singer of this and the last century. It is difficult to appreciate him without listening to a variety of selections. This collection has some of his best recordings and exhibits the versatility and variety that he possessed that permitted him to "crossover" from opera to popular music with a ease.

I recommend this for those who already know Lanza to some extent but want to go into more depth and understand his marvelous skills.

A Must Have .......2006-12-12

I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Mario Lanza had. This collection contains opera and pop selections that exhibit the power yet sweetness of his voice. Fortunately, we have his CD's and videos so we can remember and listen to his gorgeous, vibrant voice and personality. I highly recommend this collection along with his wonderful movies, especially The Great Caruso.

WONDERFUL!!!!!.......2005-10-19

The Mario Lanza Collection is a three CD set and it has 61 songs and they all sound great. The mastering on this set is excellent and the song choice is very very good. It would have been perfect if they added a forth CD with more Arias, Italian songs and Sacred Arias. BUT still this set is a great introduction to Lanza. Lanza's voice was powerful and beautiful; if you are a fan of great singing, you will love Lanza. Highlights on this CD set are; Be my Love, Because your Mine, Serenade, With a Song in My Heart, Temptation, The Lord's Prayer, Ciribirbin, O Solo Mio, Ariverducci Roma, and on and on. They are many many great songs on this set, and I highly recommend it.

The best from The Best Singer and Tenor of all time........2007-04-24

This is a beautiful collection of songs. Once again it exhibits the depth and breath of Mario Lanza's vocal abilities. It is wonderful to hear him sing such lovely melodies. It is also splendid to read Derek Mannering's explanation of how Lanza interpreted each song with his heart and soul. For anyone who is a fan of Mario's, this collection is worth the price.

Most of these songs are from the popular radio show he did in the 50's, when his voice was at it's best. I own numerous Lanza cds, and I can never get enough of his glorious voice and these beautiful songs. A lot of them can be found on other albums, it's true, but the first song is a previously unreleased gem, which was a big selling point with me. How could I pass this up? Also a lot of the songs are different versions from others I have, so this album was definately a must have, for me. I think that anyone who is a true Lanza fan, will love this cd.

Another great CD by the greatest singer of all time!!!.......2001-07-17

Derek Mannering has done it again in releasing yet another first class CD collection by the "Voice of the Century", Mario Lanza. Most of the items on this album have been previously released either on vinyl, CD, or both, but this collection is worth having nonetheless. The one item here never before released is the beautifully sung "All the Things You Are" and did Lanza ever serve this one up in first class fashion. The singing here is extremely fresh and vibrant. A recording that I don't believe has been on CD before is the "You Are Love", from Showboat, presented here (different from the performance on the definitive "Don't Forget Me" C). Lanza shows us here a truly passionate and ardent Gaylord Revenal. No other singer sang this song as well. "On the Street Where You Live" is given a very virile and beautiful rendition by Lanza. I don't know where or when I have ever heard the song "Where or When" sung this well. The rest of the selections on this offering are terrific as well, but can be found on other collections. This collection is worth owning, if for no other reason than for the four selections previously mentioned. The sound quality is excellent, giving the Mario Lanza voice the benefit of its full presence. Lanza definitely had a true flair for the popular song and Broadway ballad, as well as the ringing operatic aria, no doubt about it. If you're looking for a collection of classic standard and Broadway tunes performed with the mastery and excellence that only Mario Lanza could deliver, this CD is the one for you. Highly recommended!!!

Pianist Percy Faith, a pioneer of the Easy Listening genre, had a successful and lengthy career as the in-house conductor and arranger for Columbia Records. Faith was renowned for his musical interpretations of Broadway and motion picture music. These two reissues from Collectables on 1 CD were originally released in 1965. 24 tracks. 2003.

I bought this solely for "Once Upon a Time", and was dismayed that the CD is mono, not stereo. The quality of the recordings leaves much to be desired, as many of them lack the pristine quality I'm used to on a CD.

classic arrangements by the classic gentlemen ~ Percy Faith.......2004-02-16

Two albums from the Columbia Records people blending different decades "Li'l Abner" (originally released CL 955 in 1956) and "Broadway Bouquet" (originally released LS 9156 in 1965), sharing the unmistakable style of the "Percy Faith Touch" ~ you know in an instant you're in for the best of the best ~ Duke Ellington was so taken with Faith's arrangements, that he would give anything to be able to arrange in that fashion.

Let's begin with "IT'S A TYPICAL DAY" along with "LOVE IN A HOME", both from "Li'l Abner", wonderful opening counterparts and the stirring arrangements by Maestro Percy Faith ~ "JUBILATON T. CORNPONE", uplifting cue that will keep bouncing in your head for hours, maybe even days ~ "IF I HAD MY DRUTHERS", one of the forgettable tunes from the show ~ "NAMELY YOU", has to be the best and favorite song of the Johnny Mercer and Gene De Paul score ~ by the way, these two composers penned the lively screen musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", both scores were sure winners from two talented songwriters, Percy Faith steps up to the podium and takes it to another level.

Now with "Broadway Bouquet", we have perfection within the realm of lush arranging, so flawless "HELLO, DOLLY!" (Jerry Herman), "ONCE UPON A TIME" (Adams/Strouse), "SOMEWHERE" (Sondheim/Bernstein), "SUNRISE, SUNSET/FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" (Harnick/Bock) (one of my all-time favorites, can't get enough of this score), "WHO CAN I TURN TO (WHEN NOBODY NEEDS ME)" (Bricusse/Newley), "A QUIET THING" (Ebb/Kander), "MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY" (Comden/Green/Styne), "WHAT KIND OF FOOL AM I?" (Bricusse/Newley) (two of the best songwriters in the business), "LONG AGO" (David Heneker), "THE SWEETEST SOUNDS" (Richard Rodgers) (his credit of compositions goes through the ceiling, will never be another like 'em), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart) (a wonderful classic that is still popular by today's standards), "THEME FROM "GOLDEN BOY" (Adams Strouse) (another team of composers that have made an impact on the Broadway scene) ~ an example of the "Percy Faith Touch", so effortless, you feel like you're floating on a cloud ~ falls into Percy's many albums of fabulous string arrangements, they grabbed the attention of the listener and wouldn't let go. Can't think of any other arranger/composer who left such a great legacy as this man!

Highly recommend to ALL fans of Percy Faith ~ thanks to Collectables for releasing this collection from the vaults of Columbia Records ~ so listeners sit back, relax and enjoy a small part of Maestro Percy Faith's fabulous career!

THIS SONG IS YET ANOTHER ONE OF MY FAVORITE U2 SONGS. I ALSO SAW THE VIDEO [WHICH WAS ALSO GOOD] AND THIS SONG DEFINITELY IS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT GOOD MUSIC REALLY IS. FOR ALL THE BAND'S BEST SINGLES, BUY ''U2; THE BEST OF 1980-1990'' AND ''U2; THE BEST OF 1990-2000''.

The previous release of TST was very rough (almost hilarious) and the band really thought it was worth polishing, and they sure did!
Great song and the video certainly is one of their best. The live tracks are super quality, they never dissapoint, even on singles.

"Sweetest Thing" - the sweetest thing they ever recorded!.......2003-04-23

I've been a long-time "semi"-fan of U2 for as long as I can remember. I never really put much real thought into their music until a year or so ago. While I am sure the live tracks on here are great (I enjoy the Boy versions), I must voice my opinion on "The Sweetest Thing." I first saw the video for this song way back in the day, when MTV was actually still playing good stuff. I was enthralled - here was Bono... on a bus... with flowers... singing this pretty little song! Absolutely brilliant!

When I finally picked up this "single mix" on the 1980-1990 best of set, I was amazed. Here was a band that had, so far, built their eputation as this big, pompous band with "something to say." And they did a good job at that. But what I heard in this track was a group finally stepping back from this legacy they'd built up over the last 9 or 10 years, and putting out one of the prettiest and most emotionally pleasing tracks of their collective career. Bono's lyrics are sweeter than sweet, even if they do illustrate a love gone wrong. "Baby's got blue skies up ahead, but in this, I'm a raincloud/Ours is a stormy kind of love." The vocals are incredible. Edge's guitar is nothing short of perfect - every lick he throws in is tasteful and flawless. Even those introductory piano stabs are enthralling. At only three minutes long, the track feels entirely too short - it could easily stretch into "With Or Without You" length and be just as great.

I actually prefer this single mix to the original version that was released in 1987. Anyway, pick up this tune as soon as possible, especially if you want to hear something "different" from one of the best bands around.

Great for the 'Boy' Live Tracks.......2003-03-14

The song itself, is nothing spectacular. U2 rerecorded or remastered this song for their Greatest Hits 1980-1990 compilation, and in my own opinion have made a song that is worse than the original. However, it takes a diehard fan to probably notice the difference. Never-the-less, if "The Sweetest Thing" is all you are interested in, go for the BEst of disc and if you can get the 2 disc version which includes the original B-Sides version and this reworking.

My reason for giving this disc 4 stars is in the live tracks. Here are two tracks from the Red Rocks concert that did not make the Under a Blood Red Sky CD. Yet, these two songs are wonderful U2 songs, and they sound really great live. LIstening to these songs makes me wish they would rework the whole Under a Blood Red Sky album into a full concert CD. That would be awesome. As it is, if you like that concert CD and the U2 studio work before that, especially Boy, these B-Sides should make you happy.

A sweet little CD.......2001-11-26

It's 1987 re-worked and polished, with a smoother piano rhythem and the addition of Larry, Adam and Edge on backup vocals. This song originally showed up on the B-Side of Where the Streets Have No Name, and now it's worthy of its own single release, along with two b-sides of its own. The Sweetest Thing was written by the lead singer of the band for his wife when he forgot her birthday. It is a song about a love that's turned cruel: "I wanted to run but she made me crawl/eternal fire she turned me to straw/.../ours is a stormy kind of love", a nasty love song dressed up as a ballad that will have you humming along and singing "oh, oh, oh the sweetest thing," again and again. Twilight and An Cat Dubh, both of which are live recordings from U2's earliest days as a band, are reminiscent of the raw, anthemic beginnings of U2 and make a nice contrast to the polished image presented by Sweetest Thing '98. It's a sweet little single and a worthwhile addition to the collection of any U2 fan, or even any music fan in general.
