Nirvana may have been the biggest thing in the music world in the early '90s, but the trio maintained an uncommon devotion to core fans who knew them when they were still sleeping in a van. Fending off the adoration of punk-rock dabblers in the media and their audience while simultaneously welcoming stalwart underground-music supporters, Kurt Cobain did things on his own terms--until it all came crashing down. A decade after Cobain's 1994 suicide and the band's demise, With the Lights Out remains true to the ethos that defined the band and the alt-rock revolution that rose and fell with them.

Eschewing the standard hits-sprinkled-with-rarities mix, this lovingly compiled three-CD, one-DVD collection is made up almost entirely of previously unreleased selections. The handful of previously heard tracks are obscurities along the lines of the group's cover of "Here She Comes Now," recorded for a 1990 indie-rock tribute to the Velvet Underground. But it's not the B-sides and compilation oddities that define this idiosyncratic set; rather, its spirit is captured in the bedroom demos, radio performances, and sloppy amateur video recordings that catch Cobain and cohorts developing from just another punk- and metal-inspired bunch of grunge rockers pounding away in the bass player's mom's living room into a band that defined an era. --Steven Stolder

The box set spans Nirvana's entire career, from a recording of Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker" at the band's first show in 1987 to solo acoustic performances from singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain in 1994. With The Lights Out features a 60-page color booklet with rare photos and liner notes by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and writer Neil Strauss. The three CDs, arranged largely chronologically contains home and rehearsal demos, including for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (whose lyric "With the lights out" provides the set's title), "Rape Me," "Heart Shaped Box" and a trio penned by legendary bluesman Leadbelly. Heard in the 12 previously unreleased solo acoustic tracks are such gems as "All Apologies," "Lithium" and "Sliver." Six previously unreleased radio performances range from "Anorexorcist" in 1987 to "Dumb" in 1991 (two years before it was on 1993's In Utero). Along with the remaining debuts are a handful of earlier issued, though rare, b-sides and demos as well as the original Butch Vig mix of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Highlighted on the With The Lights Out DVD is a previously unreleased video of nine songs performed in 1988 at bassist Krist Novoselic's mother's house in Aberdeen, Washington; the rare "In Bloom" Sub Pop music video, and 10 never-before-seen live performances. Noteworthy among them are debut renditions of "Pennyroyal Tea", "Smells Like Teen Spirit" both from early 1991. Also premiering is an unlikely performance of Jacques Brel and Rod McKuen's "Seasons In The Sun" shot at a Rio de Janeiro studio.

This collection of Nirvana's greatest music follows the band from their beginning to end. This is a must own for anyone who likes nirvana.

This was the Box Set that Nirvana fans had been waiting for. With it's release they were not disappointed. The Box Set is arranged chronologically, with demos, song outtakes, and studio mixes from Nirvana's career. My personal highlights include the Leadbelly cover Ain't It a Shame, the Nevermind Outakes of Old Age and Verse, Chorus Verse, and the last demo ever recorded by Cobain called Do Re Mi. Some of this makes you realize that some of Cobain's strongest work was never released. Old Age had top 40 potential if it would have been completed. Do Re Mi has a beautiful melody and beatleesque tone. My only regret is that some of the demos did not belong on here due to their roughness. This space might have been better filled perhaps with Nirvana's radio performances or concert performances. The DVD also contained rare Nirvana footage. However, I was disappointed it didn't contain more of Nirvana's T.V. performances or scenes from their In Utero tour. Overall this is a great resource for any Nirvana fan who wants to dig deeper into this band.

I like the demos a lot, I am a songwriter myself and they remind me that even Kurt Cobain figured out his songs on his own. As far as some having a problem with no b sides, most of the B sides you wanted are on this! Including D-7, Even In His Youth, I Hate Myself And I Want To Die, Gallons of Rubbing Alcohol, Marigold, Moist Vagina, Curmudgeon, Verse Chorus Verse, Aneurysm, with the only missing songs being Spank Thru and You Know You're Right (Which I'll admit is no good that the only way you can have that song is by buying the greatest hits collection). In the Butch Vig Teen Spirit Version the guitar sounds much more like the guitars of Garbage (Vig's band) than the raw visceral guitar on the Nevermind recording.

While a B side collection would be an excellent companion piece to the Greatest Hits collection and it would be great if the company would make one, these are now probably my favorite Nirvana discs I own for the sheer rawness of the recordings. Nirvana was a big fan of minimalism, and while I do not like every track, the Sage covers, Sappy, Oh The Guilt, the Here She Comes Now cover, and the White Lace And Strange cover (Proving once and for all that Cobain could actually play guitar), are some of my favorite Nirvana tracks ever.

this says it best. three discs of previously hard-to-find Nirvana b-sides
and rarities all mastered in high-quality sound. most of these tracks were
only available on the Outcesticide releases in the '90s (with poor sound quality and terribly overpriced). at the time, this is the only access we
had to any Nirvana material of this type. most of us could not get enough of this band back in the day, so we would pay whatever we had to get it.
the first three discs are a collection of live, b-side and rare tracks in chronological order (for the most part) and the fourth disc is a DVD of
the band in December 1988 (with former drummer Chad Channing) practicing
at Chris Novoselic's house (bet his mother wasn't happy) with a Sub Pop video of "In Bloom" and other greatness. i have owned this for over two
years now, and at least one of these discs rarely ever leave my CD changer. very enjoyable. if you're even a moderate fan, get this, it is worth it !!!

All it is the summary of the boxset i guess for the budget nirvana fan? the reason i am giving it 2 stars all it had to offer was a track not included in the box set which is the come as you are demo.. the box set is alot more expensive but has alot more to offer than this and you get a decent dvd to watch all in all a buy for the hardcore nirvana fan... also the art work was originally picked out by Frances Bean Cobain and thats a good thing! other than that buy the box set

I agree with most people that this is an un-necessary release. It is an obvious attempt to cash in by the holders of the rights. But on the other hand it is also a cheaper alternative to the 'With the lights out box'. I own the box and can honestly say it is definitely worth the extra money to buy that. This doesn't even offer the best of the box anyway, which it clear states in the title. I only bought this because I like to own anything and everything with the Nirvana name on it. I believe Nirvana are the most influencial band since the Beatles and any unheard recording of the bands I must have.
Only hardcore fans will want to buy this, it only offers 3 previously unreleased recording of which only two are any good. 'Sappy' and a 1985 recorded version of 'Spank Thru' which surely must be the first ever recording by Nirvana.
As far as value for money goes, this doesn't have anything to offer, sadly.

Even though the song list looks impressive, don't waste your money on this one. This is the poorest quality sound I've ever heard on a CD.
Being a Nirvana Fan, I have other albums that sound great, but I can't recommend this one.Again don't waste your money.

I love this album. They should make a movie based on the book PERFUME and call it SCENTLESS APPRENTICE and then they should use the music from the CD as the basis for the movie soundtrack. I could imagine writers of fantansy or medieval stories might find this music inspiring to listen to while they write.

I'd recommend this for any rock fan, even those who haven't heard Nirvana. (You probably have and just didn't know who it was.) Nirvana's artistic genius truly shows through this string quartet. Although I'm not ecstatic about Tom Tally's cover of "Something in the Way" it's not something I don't enjoy listening to. Todd Mark Rubenstein, however, does a fantastic job interpreting Nirvana. Or any band I've heard him do so far.

Although at first you may be put off by the idea of hearing your favorite rock in string quartet form, this CD should dispell any doubts. When done well, a string quartet tribute is at least as - if not more - valuable than the original.

I heard this CD played in my friends car, and even though it was just some violins, I enjoyed it alot. I asked who it was, and they said "Nirvana". I was surprised, and looked around online to see that it was something called a String-Tribute. This is an awesome CD, with songs like Rape Me, Come As You Are, and Smells Like Teen Spirit remade with that orchastral feel to it. It's different, but in a good way. If you're not into this kind of thing, well, neither was I.

I have listened to many of the SQTs but this one is one of my faves. The renditions of Polly, Rape Me, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, and All Apologies are interesting, but the rest are just decent. One of my rules of buying a CD is if they have three songs you like then it is permissible to buy the CD. The people who impulse-buy b/c of a hit song like "The Macarena" are total numb-nuts. But that's my opinion. But for Nirvana fans I hioghly suggest this is you want to hear Nirvana transposed into orchestra.

I listen to nirvana frequently and when i heard this randistion of it i was pretty impresses. You can expect a band like nirvana to be well translated into instrumental. Or at least there more laid back songs. All in all i recomend this to anyone who would like to try somthing different. I thought it was well put together

If you just want "Heart Shaped Box", you're best off just buying "In Utero". The first b-side is also on In Utero.

The important thing on this album is its weakest track. Dave Grohl's only composition to be released under Nirvana, "Marigold", is on this single. Unfortunately, the song was placed behind two of Kurt Cobain's strongest compositions.

"Heart Shaped Box", along with "Rape Me", "All Apologies", and "Pennyroyal Tea", is one of the jewels of In Utero.

It's a better deal to buy the Singles Box if you want b-sides

Wow! This is even better than 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and 'Rape Me/All Apologies', and those singles kicked ass! This demonstrates Cobains true talent, the talent that you wouldn't see on any other album but 'In Utero'. This talent is what made him a god, not 'Nevermind' which you have to admit is overrated and overhyped. I love this song, its amazing and definately one of Nirvanas most notorious and best. This song/single proves that Nirvana was much more than just "teen spirit" and they have a side of them that has much talent. This song, as well as the album it was made from, 'In Utero', is one of my all-time favorites!

Nirvana's 10th single (including split singles) and first single released off of their fourth album, In Utero.
Heart Shaped Box is a classic Nirvana song displaying the mellowness that Nirvana is capable of mixed with the harsh sound of the chorus, similar to so many other Nirvana songs we know and love. Over all it's a relatively mellow song for this trio, but a powerful one filled with the random lyrics that somehow convey a powerful meaning.
The screaming, angst ridden voice of Kurt Cobain while Dave Grohl's drums create the unique qualities of this song. The subtleness of Krist Novoselic at the bass complete the excellent blend that constructs Milk It. A song where you sense an awkwardness about Cobain's guitar that mellows down and builds up into a head banging, body thrashing, and noise filled Nirvana song.
Marigold is a Dave Grohl original with the music and lyrics both written by him. A gentle, yet surprisingly depressing song with Dave singing vocals and drumming. Simple but excellent. Marigold was originally recorded in 1990 and released in 1992 on the out of print cassette, Pocketwatch. This is one of Grohl's best.
