New York New York [CD-single] [Enhanced] [Import]

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
The first single off the Whiskeytown singer/songwriters sophomore album, 'Gold'. Includes two non-LP tracks, 'Mara Lisa' & 'From Me To You' along with the enhanced video to 'New York, New York'. The video was shot on September 7 by the Brooklyn Bridge and features the World Trade Center in almost every frame. And in an eerily prescient closing shot, Adams turns and looks across the Hudson River, casting a proud glance at the Twin Towers. The video is dedicated to all those who died in the terrorist strikes of September 11 and to the rescue workers of the city. 2001.

Album Description

Formed in NYC in the mid-'70s by David Byrne, Chris Franz, Tina Weymouth, and ex-Modern Lover Jerry Harrison, the Talking Heads evolved out of their now-legendary humble beginnings at CBGB's to become one of the most adventurous and influential bands ever. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, the Heads' visionary, polyrhythmic sound daringly combined funk and punk, African beats, avant-garde minimalism, and pure pop. From their 1977 debut through their Brian Eno-produced classics to their '88 farewell, Naked, they both pushed artistic boundaries and delivered indelible radio hits like "Once In A Lifetime" and "Burning Down The House."

4 out of 5 stars CBGB.......2007-07-06

This collection is all a Talking Head fan (except the most devout fan) will ever need. 3/4s of the tunes are great, the rest are still good.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional best-of set.......2006-10-10

Of course you know all these songs, and of course there are many more great cuts deeper on the original albums, but for a single-disc review of a band with over 10 years' worth of releases, this 18-track set is hard to beat. The group went through several striking stylistic changes over its lifetime, but that variation actually helps this disc hold together as an album as well as a set of songs.

This would make a great introduction for a younger fan of the current crop of danceable art rock bands (Of Montreal, The Killers, Decemberists) or a casual fan looking to supplant an old LP collection.

5 out of 5 stars A nice compilation of The Talking Heads.......2006-08-24

I've always liked The Talking Heads, they always had catchy songs that were fun to listen to. I must admit, my favorite of theirs has always been "Burning Down The House", but there are so many good songs on here, as well. The Talking Heads were one of the best bands of the 80's, that's when they had their best work. The 70's were ok, too, but their 80's work really shined. I'm quite happy with this.

5 out of 5 stars Articulate Collection.......2006-08-17

Oddly, a compilation by Talking Heads should come out uneven and disjointed, but this collection is marvelously done. The songs meld well together and provide a sampler that wouldn't prevent anyone from buying their excellent original albums. ('Talking Heads '77,' 'Remain in Light,' and 'Speaking in Tongues' are their crowning achievements artistically, but 'Fear of Music,' 'More Songs About Buildings and Food,' and 'True Stories' demonstrate that they had a great repertoire. (Unlike, 'Sand in the Vaseline,' which is also excellent, but perhaps takes too many gems and doesn't align them as well.)

For the uninitiated, Talking Heads is one of the freshest and engaging progressive bands from the seventies and eighties. "Psycho Killer," "Once in a Lifetime," "Burning Down the House," and "Wild, Wild Life" all capture the inspired lunacy that dares to match the insanity of ordinary life. All of their albums are well represented. "Life During Wartime" represents them at their progressive best, but "And She Was" showcases their ethereal best.

In sum, 'Best of Talking Heads' provides a great mix and a thoughtful sampler without spoiling all of the fun.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Heads Compilation.......2006-04-03

Known as much for their quirky style as well as their enigmatic and creative music, Talking Heads were one of the most popular and successful bands of the late 1970s' and early 1980s'. Even today, almost 20 years after they broke up, they still have a large fanbase.

Personally speaking, I'm not the world's biggest Talking Heads fan. However, I've always liked what I heard from them, and I always wanted one of their cds in my collection. So when I found the single disc, 18 track collection "The Best Of Talking Heads", I snatched it up immediately.

This is by far the best collection for the Talking Heads novice. Pretty much all the Talking Heads essentials are here, including "Love - > Building On Fire", "Take Me To The River", "Life During Wartime", "Memories Can't Wait", "Once In A Lifetime" and "Burning Down The House" as well as many others. And every track sounds fantastic.

In addition, there is a wonderful booklet replete with great liner notes, including interviews with Talking Heads fans such as Moby and El P. It is also readily available and affordabe. I highly recommend it.

The last Nirvana collection recorded before the untimely death of Kurt Cobain, Unplugged caught many by surprise with its stripped down, neo-acoustic offerings with a bridled fury. When Cobain sings, "I swear I don't have a gun, I don't have a gun" with clenched teeth (instead of an open howl) and when the haunting strains of "About a Girl"--from their earliest LP--chills even with quieted guitars, you discover a new appreciation for the nuances of one of the greatest bands of recent times. Highlights include covers of three Meat Puppets tracks (featuring special guests Curt and Kris Kirkwood of that influential "college rock" band), the weepy cello on the Vaselines' "Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam," and their cover of David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World." --Lorry Fleming

5 out of 5 stars The most classic Nirvana show.......2007-07-18

This CD is about the first MTV Unplugged, that was really unplugged, really acoustic, it was live, you can see the history in rock music changes with this show, the actual MTV unplugged are comercial and taped. If you like rock and Nirvana you must have this album

5 out of 5 stars Nirvana's Defining Moment.......2007-06-18

This is the album that made me a Nirvana fan for life. I had listened to the radio hits of Nevermind...and bought In Utero for Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies, but this is the album that really made me realize the greatness of this band. With the removal of the loud guitars and distortion, you can hear the greatness in Nirvana's songs and the passion in Cobain's voice. Yes, the songs are not always played perfectly and sometimes Cobain is off pitch, but that is what makes this performance so real and genuine. Let's not forget this was not a studio performance but a concert setting. On top of that, unlike most other bands on MTV Unplugged, Nirvana did every song with just one take. About A Girl is a beautiful Beatleesque pop song, Pennyroyal Tea proves to be a beautiful song minus the loud raging guitars, and All Apoligies is haunting and brilliant (I must say I like the In Utero version better however.) What also makes this album great is the covers from David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World" to the incredable Leadbelly cover of "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" The end of this song is one of the best performances I have ever heard by an artist. The passion and angst is there...and it's not fake for the TV cameras but truely Cobain's dark inner pain. This is what makes this album great. The passion and thought put in to each and every song by Kurt Cobain. This is not to take away from the rest of the band who do a great job keeping each and every song going, including to addition of cello and accordian to some of the songs.

4 out of 5 stars Nirvana-MTV Unplugged in New York (an unbiased review).......2007-06-17

First, let me start off by saying that this is an unbiased review. I'm not a fan of the band nor do I dislike the band. I'm a fan of all types of music. I also won't be comparing this album to any other albums from the band. This review will be strictly on this particular album. Now onto the review.

Here's a rundown of the songs (as well as my rating for each song):

About a Girl-4.5/5
Come As You Are-4.5/5
Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam-3/5
The Man Who Sold the World-3.5/5
Pennyroyal Tea-2.5/5
Dumb-4/5
Polly-4/5
On a Plain-3.5/5
Something in the Way-4/5
Plateau-3/5
Oh Me-3.5/5
Land of Fire-3/5
All Apologies-4.5/5
Where Did You Sleep Last Night-4/5

Picture this: Kurt Kobain, 3 acoustic guitars, a set of drums, and a cello. What could me more perfect than that? This album is a set of 14 songs from Nirvana's second album all played acoustically. The only thing better than a greatest hits album is an album with live, acoustic music from the band. Here's where the band hit (and missed) with this album.

So what's to like about this album? First, aside from a few pitchy spots here and there, Kobain's vocals are top notch and send chills down my spine. I personally prefer his recorded vocals to his live vocals but I'm sure a lot of people out there love the rawness of his voice when he sings live. The way he sings shows a ton of emotion as though each word that comes out of his mouth means the world to him yet he remains mellow with an "I don't care about anything" type of attitude.

Second, although the grungy sound is gone due to the lack of electric guitars, the hardness is still there in my eyes. With 3 guitars going at the same time, the band is able to achieve a great mixture of sounds while still maintaining the "you can feel it in your stomach", loud, hard, beats. "Come As You Are" doesn't lose its great intro or guitar solo. Kurt just plugs in his acoustic guitar and the sound is just like the original. Another stand out song in terms of guitar work is "The Man Who Sold the World". It's great to hear a band that can not only play their songs acoustically but can also make them sound so complex, giving a whole new sound to their songs. Equally impressive is drummer Dave Grohl's background vocals.

Third, as mentioned above, the band uses a cellist alongside their guitars and drums. Although it's sometimes hard to miss, you can certainly hear it in "All Apologies". This helps to create a more bluesy sound with some of the songs.

Fourth, those who don't know much about Nirvana's music (myself included) will be thrilled to see that "About a Girl", "Come As You Are", and "All Apologies" are on this album. You also may recognize "Dumb" and "Polly". All of these songs are done superbly. And you will be pleasantly surprised that there are a lot of great songs on this album that you haven't heard of. From the haunting "Something in the Way" and "Oh Me" to the incredibly sad "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" (my new current favorite Nirvana song) to the blast-worthy "Plateau", you'll find a lot of great new material on this album.

And what's not to like? Not much. As mentioned above, there are some pitchy spots throughout the album but that's expected. Some of the songs are a bit on the short side which isn't a huge turn off but just something I observed. In terms of songs I didn't like, "Pennyroyal Tea" isn't all that great and "Lake of Fire" and "Plateau" are both too country-sounding for my taste.

My rating: 4/5 stars. I probably would've given 4.5 stars if I could. The reason for taking 1 star off is that I find it hard to play every song on this album. I tend to skip over maybe 4 or 5 of them. Other than that, this album is perfect and Nirvana fans as well as fans of great music in general will equally be impressed with how this live album turned out. Be sure to pick it up!

5 out of 5 stars Necessary for any music collection.......2007-05-31

It doesn't matter whether you're into grunge, or even if you like Nirvana that much, this album is a winner in every sense. The tracks from previous studio albums are cast in a new light, but the timing is not too different that you can't belt out your best Kurt Cobain with all those intonations you know so well. Also, the covers are masterfully done; it's plain to see that the band has a lot of respect for the tracks and their original artists.
If you're getting into more Unpluggeds, check out Neil Young and Eric Clapton. The Korn Unplugged that just came out recently might be worth it too if you have a basic enjoyment of their music.

5 out of 5 stars Best Nirvana album EVER.......2007-05-22

Yes this is better than Nevermind, far and away. If you (as my dad) think Nirvana is just pure noise, listen to this and your mind should be changed. Nirvana's better in an acoustic setting than plugged in - they're good plugged in too, but I prefer Cobain the acoustic guitarist to Cobain the electric one - listen to his work on songs like Something in the Way or Lake of Fire.
Other than the fact that every song is top quality but Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam (which is terrible) is the variety of song selection. They mostly skip over their hits - Pennyroyal Tea, About a Girl, Come As You Are and All Apologies make appearances, but so do three near-obscurities from Nevermind. Now, Something in the Way and Polly were great songs in the first place, but I never liked the studio take of On a Plain - I saw it as one of the several generic speedy punk-grunge rockers that took up space on the album's second side (others include Lounge Act, Stay Away and Territorial Pissings). But it's one of my favorites in this setting. The melody comes into full view, there's an added backup vocal from Dave Grohl similar to the one on Heart Shaped Box, and it's set to a nice toe-tapping rhythm. Very cool. And this version of Pennyroyal Tea is also better than the familiar hit one (which is hard to beat), getting even MORE raw emotion from the chorus. Not to mention their high-profile cover of David Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World, which actually isn't unplugged but who cares?
Stick around for the last five songs, too. Three are covers of Meat Puppets (who, if you don't know them, are a fairly high-profile college-rock band - high profile for a college-rock band, that is). Lake of Fire has the aforementioned good acoustic picking and is probably my favorite song about hell ever written (sure beats similar songs by Slayer or Slipknot!), Plateau has a good back-porch vibe, and Oh Me, strong vocals.
And if this was just the last two songs, I'd still give it five stars. I love the studio take on All Apologies as much as the proverbial next guy (assuming he's a Nirvana fan, of course), but this one's even better. The perfect song for an all acoustic setting. And Where Did You Sleep Last Night (originally a Leadbelly song called In the Pines) is, I think, my favorite Nirvana song ever. Especially the ending. The group had gotten into a killer quiet, swaying mood for awhile, and then all the sudden Kurt loses all control and starts screaming, "MY GIRL, MY GIRL, DON'T YOU LIE TO ME, TELL ME WHERE DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT". Whoa... whoa, whoa, and whoa.
You can just see Nirvana going in an all-acoustic direction had Kurt not killed himself (of course, he might not have killed himself had he not been FORCED into stardom by frickin' MTV) when you listen to this.

Album Description

Journey: Live in New York is filled with the signature Richard Smallwood melodies, harmonies, and orchestral arrangements that listeners have come to expect and adore. Smallwood's musical genius blurs the lines between live audience and taped recording, transporting the listener to the actual event, rather than leaving them sitting in a spectator's position. And, just as always, Vision, the rich and vibrant choir, backs Smallwood to bring his songs to life. Journey: Live in New York, boasts guest appearances by Chaka Khan, Kelly Price, The Hawkins Family and more! This double CD also includes special enhancements and live concert video.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Variety.......2007-07-20

Once again Richard Smallwood has released an awesome project. When I first listened to it, I said "It's o.k." But, the second listen sold me. The project has his signature style all over it, and true to Richard's nature, he showcases other talent as well. I love the raw, earthy voice of Chaka Khan, the melodic soprano voice of Janet Chandler-Eteme, and Kim Burrell's gospel-honed big voice. It is all about worship to the King of Kings, and Journey: Live in New York does just that.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence Personified!.......2007-07-05

Richard Smallwood's latest project, Journey: Live in New York, is his best work to date! It is an expressed representation of musical excellence that ushers you right into the presence of God! This CD set is a must have for any serious lover of gospel music.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-05

Ilove Richard Smallwood I have been a fan since I was 15 years old and this CD project was amazing I went to the actual concert in New York abt 3 years ago and I was amazed then as I do now. I belong to the church where Richard Worships and I sing in the choir that he consults (when he is in town that is) But I really love his style of music as it takes u there and if you are not careful you will find yourself underneath a church bench in the spirit. Si get this porject if you have not as this wa is absolutely awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Not the typical Smallwood item.......2007-07-03

This is a 2-CD set. A lot of his past work is on the CD. There are several new songs that are nice but this is not his usual standard.

3 out of 5 stars Richard Smallwood continues his Journey.......2007-06-16

A longtime fan of Professor Richard Smallwood - that, I am.

Smallwood possesses an unquestionable gift; one given to him by God and shared with the world through his passion and ministry of gospel music. The journey of Richard Smallwood (in song) became apparent to the world in the early 1980's, though he'd been singing since childhood and directing choirs since age 12.

Recorded, August 2005, the initial release date of this project was rescheduled, due in part to the loss of Richard's beloved Mother, Mabel Ruth Smallwood, whom he honors and credits highly with giving him his start in the art of music.

I was in attendance the evening of this recording and the atmosphere inside of the Hammerstein Ballroom, before the recording, was electric, to say the least. You see, New York City admires Richard Smallwood and to have him agree to record a live project on the richest island in the world, Manhattan, was an event!

You will find that this effort consists of not 1, but 2 CD's; one disc is enhanced with a video performance and before closing out disc two, you are treated to 3 bonus tracks. As much as I admire Professor Smallwood, while reviewing this product, I wasn't thoroughly inspired by what I heard until disc two filled the studio. Oh yes, "I'll Trust Him" on disc one, performed by Mr. Smallwood was excellent, but that was all. Vision, Smallwood's talent laden ensemble, start the ball rolling on disc two with a rousing anthem entitled "All The Glory"; it just gets better from there as special guests, Kelly Price, The Hawkins Family and new convert, Chaka Khan take the stage.

Overall, this offering from Richard Smallwood is acceptable, for it is he who is responsible for the movement and undeniable marriage of classical music to traditional gospel music; for that he will always be esteemed. My faves on Journey: Live in New York include, "I'll Trust Him", "All The Glory", "Morning's Breaking" and "Precious Is Your Name."

This is a great cd with all of the hits that you remember..Sound quality is excellent...For some strange reason, have always liked Island of Lost Souls! Buy Today!

5 out of 5 stars Freaking amazing.......2007-04-28

(I'm actually 16, but I'm to lazy to login.)

ANYWAY! This album is amazing. I got this for my 13th birthday when I was in 7th grade, and it was one of the best albums I could have gotten. This album is a good size and has a whole darned lot of songs on it, (all of which, may I add, are great.) I reccomend (sp? lol) this to anybody who has heard Blondie's music before and knows just how great it truly is. Within 3 years of getting this album I now own all of their CDs plus 3 vinyls. It's truly amazing. Blondie are one of the greatest bands in history for sure.

5 out of 5 stars classic.......2007-04-27

This album is by far the greatest. It includes all of the hits from one of the greatest bands. Almost 20 years of great music compacted into one disc. It might be a shame that it is one disc, but the music is as clear as the day the band started.
Blondie stayed true to it's roots, even though time changed.
Rock on to the future.

5 out of 5 stars Mood Altering Music.......2007-04-20

Great collection of Blondie songs.

She's got amazing versatility in her voice.

Her charged spirit is so infectious...she just has no limit to her abilities to vocalize you straight onto the dance floor.

A Great party CD.

5 out of 5 stars A glamourous rock record.......2007-03-09

After listening to the record three times, I found it quite glamourous and chic. The voice of Debbie Harry is quite unique, symbol of an era.

This is an astonishing collection of works - or parts of works - by Mozart that covers almost every aspect of his creative output: symphonic, religious music, concerti (for piano, horn, violin, clarinet, flute), chamber music, serenades (for strings; winds), a couple of opera overtures and more. Those who know and love Mozart's music will not need this, but it's a great introduction, a great overview. The selections are well-chosen and interestingly organized, with familiar pieces splrinkled among some not-so well known. A good primer. --Robert Levine

1 out of 5 stars How can you go wrong with Mozart?...Buy this and find out........2007-05-13

I was extraordinarely ignorant when I purchased this recording. I thought,"WOW!! Look at all the music you get in this CD set. The price cannot be beat!" When I received the CD, I discovered that you don't really get any music at all. This is a great sample CD, and should be bought by a person brand new to classical music. However, if you have any experience with classical music, you will want to pass on this CD.

Each of the pieces are hacked apart to the point of it being comical. It's interesting to listen to the greatest music in the world, only to have the development cut. All of a sudden I was thrust into a new key, I thought my ears were going crazy. Perhaps an effort by a decent high school orchestra, but this music is not up to snuff with any other recording.

Do yourself a favor and go out and purchase real recordings of Mozart, and not watered down stereotypes.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection and price!.......2007-05-11

I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!

4 out of 5 stars Mozart Listener.......2006-08-31

This is a good CD if you like Mozart's music. It is not the best CD I ever purchased. It is nice to listen to it in the morning before I go to work. And I sometimes listen to it in the evening before I go to bed. It is relaxing and soothing. I am not a music major or therapist. This is the best review I can write. Mary Agnes Cross

Album Description

El Cantante - The Originals - Hector Lavoe

Héctor Lavoe continues to be the source of tributes, covers, drama, and films. This collection of carefully remastered original songs affirms that the attention is well deserved. It features some of the classic hits he recorded together with Willie Colon. The influence of Lavoe will continue to be felt in the Latin music world, but nothing beats listening to this remastered original.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good... but windows does not display titles correctly.......2007-07-12

Those who like Hector Lavoe will enjoy this cd. Although the quality is not excellent (I heard the original LP in one of my neighbor's sound system and liked the sound and was amazed by the coda of Periodico de Ayer, an almost classical part at the end of the song with violins which lamentably is not included in this CD.)
I also like Dia de Suerte. How the chorus begins at "destiempo"... had not noticed it? uhmm.

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin/Bernstein: Rhapsody In Blue and American In Paris.......2007-01-16

In my opinion you just can't go wrong with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. I have many of their recordings in addition to many recordings of other orchestras; some great, some not so much...but the New York Phil is cosistently great. This recording is a superb example of Gershwin's writing, thoughtfully reproduced by a fine orchestra. Both the brashness of the pieces and the subtleties are interpreted well by Mr. Bernstein and the orchestra. The soloists are nothing other than excellent. The brass section is easily as strong as the Chicago symphony's famous section, and the strings intonation is superb. The pathos and the humor of both pieces are readily projected by this sensitive orchestra and conductor. I couldn't recommend this recording higher!

5 out of 5 stars A glorious tribute!.......2006-11-22

To play Gershwin accurately demands from the player, the absolute domain of an invisible taste, unsaid in the score. Few pianists (and Bernstein is among them) were able to convey the listener, this savoir vivre, humor, elegance, that idiomatic atmosphere that plainly justifies your effort.

To my mind, there just have been five pianists who have surmounted this peak: Oscar Levant, Jesus Maria Sanroma, Eugene List, Earl Wild and Leonard Bernstein.

So, under any pretext you should miss this invaluable musical gem.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Great Performance.......2006-08-19

I originally found this record in a used record store and purchased it for $1. This was not too long ago. After listening, i could not believe that this record only cost me $1 and that some idiot actually sold this to a used record store without listening first. I have never heard a performace of Rhapsody In Blue that is as powerful and heartfelt as this one. Bernstain melts into the piano, resulting in a performance that outshines so many Gershwin performances that exist. On the other side of the record is An American In Paris, a textbook tone poem, and i mean this as a great compliment. The images of Paris and a partially homesick/partially jubilant American strolling along exude from every note. When i found these great performances on CD, i snatched up a copy as quickly as i could. GET THIS RECORD. It is truly a Great Performance.

5 out of 5 stars GLORIOUS!.......2006-07-21

This review refers to "Great Performances: Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue/An American In Paris"(CD)

Well, how can you go wrong when Leonard Bernstein, with the help of the Columbia Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, conducts(and performs brilliantly on piano)these two George Gershwin greats. You just can't. Even the quality of the CD is excellent.

Rhapsody will carry you away to some other place for a while. From that very first bluesy note, Bernstein and Orchestra will have you wrapped up in all it's jazzy glory. It's music that defines the word greatness and it's THE song I would pick (if I could only pick one) that exemplifies the masterfulness of American composers.

An American In Paris is wonderful. The feeling of a tourist on the loose in Paris is expertly portrayed through this recording. The highs, the lows and all the delights. I felt a part of it all(and I'm a long way from Paris!)

Now, if you have read any of my other CD reviews, you know that right about here is where I complain ,and sometimes even take a star off of my rating, when a CD is too short(considering how easy it is to get music elsewhere these days). But I have to say, even though the total time on this CD is only about 35 minutes, what a glorious 35 minutes it is.
Rhapsody a wonderful 16:26 and American In Paris a Yummy 18:22.
It's music that never gets old. It stands the test of time, and many repeated playings.

So you may want to keep a copy of this in your car. A great way to start your day. Listen on the way to work, and you'll have that "what? me worry?" attitude. Also fabulous for destressing on the way home from a long days work.It just seems to make everything okay.

As I said the CD has a nice quality. It also has a booklet with some notes on how Gershwin came to compose these songs.

Gershwin performed by Bernstein..it was meant to be!
Enjoy it...Laurie

4 out of 5 stars The Definitive Version and Good Sound Quality!.......2006-06-06

This ADD recording has surprisingly good sound quality for an older recording that hasn't been remastered. The performance by Bernstein and both the Columbia Symphonic and the NY Philharmonic on the pieces is simply breathtaking. You'd be hard pressed to find better interpretations of these Gershwin masterpieces. The only problem with this album is that it's very short and although would have been the perfect length on an lp or cassette as it was originally, it seems to be a waste of cd space here. Sony should probably remaster this and add some tracks like perhaps "Porgy and Bess" to make it a better value proposition. I hope they re-release a remastered version on mini-lp sleeve replica packaging too.

Amazon.com essential recording

Happy is the composer who has an advocate as passionate and talented as Leonard Bernstein. These Copland performances have been the preferred versions since they were first issued--better even than the composer's own, later recordings. Originally they were spread over two discs, but thanks to the extended playing time of the compact disc, you can now get all three great Copland ballets together, along with the ever popular Fanfare for the Common Man. Bernstein brings to this music the right sharpness of rhythm but also a typically open-hearted warmth. He coaxes a virtuoso response from the New York Philharmonic, which knows this music as well (or better) than anyone. Self- recommending. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What more could one ask for?.......2007-06-27

Aaron Copland's masterful works are here interpreted by Bernstein. Nothing says the American sound like Copland, and there is no better interpreter than Bernstein. This recording is one of the best in my collection. I would recommend this to anyone (even non-classical music fans).

3 out of 5 stars Definitive Is Right.......2007-02-27

I have the SACD version of these recordings (except for the "Fanfare" which, in this case, is the version taken from Bernstein's recording of Copland's Third Symphony) and I must agree with others here that the performances are definitive. The "Rodeo" has more energy than any other recording I know of, in fact it can almost go over the top! "Billy the Kid" is quiet and tender, dramatic and bold and "Appalachian Spring" is dead-on. The last section of this ballet is one of my very favorite pieces of music and Bernstein's tempo and phrasing here could well be called perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Recordings of Copland's Popular Ballet Scores From Bernstein, NYPO.......2007-02-11

Without question, this splendid CD is my favorite recording of some of Aaron Copland's most popular orchestral ballet scores. In Leonard Bernstein he had both a good friend and a devout ally, who successfully championed Copland's music, helping to ensure his reputation as one of the greatest - if not the greatest - 20th Century American composer. Sony has done a superb job in digitally remastering this recording, offering some of the best sound I've heard from a vintage Leonard Bernstein/New York Philharmonic recording. But more importantly than the recording's superb sonic quality is the quality of these performances of Copland's scores. Bernstein leads in New York Philharmonic in these virtuoso performances, replete with lush, vibrant playing from the winds, horns and strings. His warm, truly heart-felt interpretation of "Applachian Spring" is truly mesmerizing, and the best I have heard from a recording. And yet, I am am just as impressed with his conducting of both "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid"; the latter replete with superb solos from the orchestra's timpanist. An elegant performance of "Fanfare for the Common Man" closes out this CD recording. Fans of Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra shouldn't hesitate in acquiring this superb CD.

5 out of 5 stars American Music at its Highest .......2007-02-04

If I was forced to recommend one CD of American music, I would feel very safe in backing this one. These interpretations have yet to be surpassed, and not even Copland himself could muster the same type of perfection that Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic did in this recording. Bernstein's way with Rodeo is unbelievable, and this alone is worth the price of the disc. The music on this recording has a lot to do with why, as Americans, we can all be proud of our place in the history of western music.

With 39 reviews under me, I will dispense with the adjectives to try and describe each interpretation of each piece on this disc, and simply say that these performances have been recommended by almost everyone (professional critics included of course) since they appeared; get it and find out why.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Copland.......2007-01-09

For the Aaron Copland fan, this CD has the essentials: the most popular and easy listening of the Copland body of creations. Enjoy!

Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Musical, But Product Quality - Eh.......2007-07-15

I absolutely love the musical so I'm thrilled with the cd.

My problem was not with the quality of the cd, but with the plastic case. The cd cases always come cracked. Although it doesn't affect the quality of the cd itself, it's rather disheartening that Amazon charges customers for its poor shipping.

5 out of 5 stars A must to add to your collection.......2007-05-18

I was very fortunate enough to see this on Broadway. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! The music has just enough jazz and contemporary vive that any musical lover would enjoy! It's also got tapping in it! Sutton is simply awesome in this role and all of the cast can really belt out their songs. Harriet Harris is phenominal in her role as Mrs. Meers. I highly recommend this to all broadway lovers! It's one to add to your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2006-06-12

The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it! It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself. I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*. Definitely worth the money.

If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)

Have Fun!

5 out of 5 stars Blondie Still Rocks to the Beat.......2007-07-23

Conceptually, this original Video Album was ahead of its time, and it still holds up today as do the production values. Back then, almost no one was doing videos, and those who did were not into complicated story lines and complex Hollywood-style approaches like present videos. Bands like Blondie were performers, and here they prove that they could - and can - rock better than the best of them. Debbie Harry and Clem Burke (who agrees with me that Clem is one of the most underrated drummers in rock history??) are definitely self-aware and in the moment while Nigel Harrison & Frank Infante might seem a bit awkward what the what and why they are doing this. That's okay, because every video is both a fun and a pleasure to watch, especially the color, graffitti-laden "The Hardest Part" and the on-location "Union City Blues." Check out both audience and band alike breaking loose in the title track and "Dreaming." Blondie fans should welcome this arrival.

5 out of 5 stars A ground breaking classic finally returns.......2007-07-15

"Eat to The Beat" was the FIRST full album video release, with a music video for every track. It is a pity that it took 28 years to make it from VHS to DVD. "Eat To The Beat" is second only to "Parallel Lines" in the Blondie catalog. Both the CD and videos are well worth revisiting as rock classics.

5 out of 5 stars I was there .......2007-07-14

Both music and videos of Eat to the Beat were THE blueprint for the new wave of the 80's. This is Debbie and the Band at their best, so good, that bands such as The Killers are still ripping them off today. Check out Debbie in Sound-A-Asleep, the epitome of beautiful and cool. Also, Clem Burke (drummer). This album was as much his as it was Debbie's. Outstanding throughout.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Collection Suffers Slightly From a Much-Needed Re-Edit.......2007-07-07

No complaints about anything but the beginnings of each video being covered by graphics from the original release, from which the title song suffers most. (The complete video can be found on the PINK LADY Variety Show Box Set from Rhino, as well as "Shayla"). Otherwise, this collection is great and looks FAB and is a must for every Blondie collector. Best vids are "Dreaming", ":Shayla" and "The Hardest Part"--which just may be the best Blondie video ever.

5 out of 5 stars The Triumphant Follow-Up..........2007-07-05

...to the enormous explosion of Parallel Lines. Eat to the Beat was the first album I ever bought and it's still, IMHO, the best Blondie album to date. Whereas Parallel Lines was the pouring of the Heart (of Glass) and Soul of the band into the album, giving everything it had, Eat to the Beat is the victory dance. The band here is tighter, faster, more raucous, and more fun. Parallel Lines still had various forays into a number of styles, putting them through a Blondie filter. On ETTB, the style is Blondie itself. These songs are as fresh and contemporary-sounding today as they were the first time I heard them on Chrysalis cassette on my one-speaker boombox.

As far as the video is concerned, the production is of course much more rudimentary by today's standards. Quite honestly, I don't care. I want to watch the band. DAH in the softcore bondage outfit in "The Hardest Part" is far more titillating than most of what passes for "hot" today. We also see, for example, what a wonderful drummer Clem Burke is and the value of a guitarist (Frank Infante) who doesn't feel the need to assault the audience with his instrument in order to get his message across.
