4 out of 5 stars Different Perspective.......2006-07-13

Vitamin records has been releasing these cd's like wild fires, just spreading orchestral music to the lesser audience of it. This cd will give you the rock music that originally started this who phenomenon (apocalyptica).

This cd is great for anyone interested in hearing the depth of a music genre. Typically when you hear a rock song, you dont hear really how the singer is supposed to influence the musical sense of the songs, but when the singer's role is put into a more balanced/equal role with the rest of the musicians, it contributes so much more to the musicality of the song. It is great for beginner musicians to understand that the singer has to be in tune with the band because he is added depth to the music, not just vocals. College music majors might also get a kick out of this album as it widens your music perspective.

These cds from vitamin really show how rock is the next evolution to classical music, it shows that although lyrics were originally added, the artists used the basic form of classical music to write songs. They all contain a theme that is repeated in the music, and most offer a "waltz" part to the song, as well as a lyrical bridge.

Good cd for every so often to change you from the norm. really neat to switch out the lyrics every so often with some classical music. Enjoy it!

3 out of 5 stars Not Much To Warrant Repeated Listenings.......2005-01-30

Over the past five years, Vitamin Records has released more than fifty of these String Quartet Tribute albums. They have run the gamut from Metallica to Clay Aiken to Alison Krauss to their most recent tribute to 2Pac. This sampler focuses primarily on alternative/heavy metal/grunge artists. So what you get is a collection of songs made famous by Staind ("It's Been Awhile"), Linkin Park ("In the End") and Korn ("Freak on a Leash").

This album (and all of the others) veers awfully close to novelty status. On first listen, it's a real charge to hear teen angst anthems like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" transformed into sedate chamber music. But it doesn't really warrant repeated listenings. The main problem is that after a few songs, they all tend to sound alike. Twenty years ago, the Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet would include a Jimi Hendrix composition in live performances and the occasional recording, but they had the sense to know that this wouldn't work over the course of an entire album.

And the idea of juxtaposing classical instruments with popular music goes back even farther. In the sixties, the Hollyridge Strings released a series of albums performing the works of the Beatles, Elvis and the Beach Boys. Bottom line? This album will force you to hear these songs in a new way and might get a laugh or two if you slip it into the CD player at your next party, but there's little here to make you come back after you've heard it once. But at $6.98, it's an inexpensive gag gift for the alternative music fan in your life. [Running Time - 50:37]

5 out of 5 stars Bach To The Footure.......2005-04-27

Hey , what a neat idea to take some good old rock and give it a classical twist. This is is one of SQT,s finest efforts contrary to some of my fellow amazonians reviews. It gives me the feel of of how Dave starts the acoustic layout of his songs before he he turns the volume up a little or a lot , as I've heard in some of the B-sides.If you like the acoustic side of Grohl , your going to love this cd, I couldn't have asked for a better song selection either.

4 out of 5 stars Track Listing.......2004-12-12

The samples and the posted track listing don't match up. Here's the order that the samples are in:

1 Big Me
2 All My Life
3 Have It All
4 Times Like These
5 Everlong
6 I'll Stick Around
7 Learn To Fly
8 Headwires
9 This Is A Call
10 Anytime

I think that this might be the actual track listing, too.

1 out of 5 stars What am I listening to??.......2003-12-18

Ok. Honestly, I didn't buy this album.

I listened to the samples here and they were
enough to make an educated decision.

This album sounds if it were run through a
program to translate the traditional rock
guitars, vocals, and bass into traditional
classical instruments. If anyone owns a good
keyboard, they know about recording in one
instrument (voice) and being able to change
it to another voice at any time. I get the
same feeling on this album.

It seems like Grohl wanted to hear some of
his work done classically, but wasn't willing
to reinvent the music. Again, this music is
more of a translation than a rebirth.

Not for me.. maybe for the elevators at RCA Records.

2 out of 5 stars Good idea, poor execution.......2003-11-20

I have several CDs of orchestral or quartet arrangements of songs originally written as rock. In addition, I am a huge Foo Fighters fan. I was very excited to get a hold of this CD, so much so I ordered it without having heard any of the arrangements. Unfortunately, the arrangements are repetitive and unimaginative, and do little to bring out the energy of the original songs. The performances are at best adequate, and nothing to shout about, and the audio is poorly mixed on the CD- the cello sounded extremely muddy to me.

I feel that to be worthwhile, a CD of this sort needs to have cuts that are as good in their own right as the original songs. I have some like that, especially a Led Zeppelin symphonic tribute called 'Kashmir'. I am as likely to pop it into the CD player as I am an actual LedZep CD. I would never choose to listen to Resident Adolescence over the original Foo Fighter versions- they simply aren't good enough.

1 out of 5 stars No irony here........2003-11-13

Remember how you'd hear a muzak version of one of the Foo's other songs sort of float in at the beginning or end of one of their music videos, while Dave Grohl was dressed in character and acting like an ass? It was funny stuff, but now I'm left with the question of what is more ironic: having Dave poke fun of himself and the commercial successes of the Foo Fighters within a video (which he directed), or actually seeing the inside jokes in his music videos become fully realized in reality?

Whatever. Long question. What I'm trying to say is, I like the albums much much better. Dave never takes himself too seriously, so why should we as listeners tolerate a group of money-loving conservatory jerks (i'm talking about these string-quartet clowns here, and the producer they rode in on) redo our teenage anthems just to prove that it's "real" music? We know it's real, we bought it the first time. And though people may disagree with some of my other opinions in this review, which is fine, I GUARANTEE that no one will say that these versions are better than the originals. So why should we buy it? So we can prove to Mom and Dad that anyone can tolerate any kind of artist as long as you water it down enough? Give me a break. Who wants any watered-down art, much less rock and roll?

This CD single is worth getting just for the cover of Ace Frehley's "Ozone". This is one of the best cover songs that I have ever heard.
