Filling the gulf between OK Computer's epic progressive rock and Kid A's skittering electronic theatrics, Hail to the Thief borrows equally from each. Its title implies that this will be a collection filled with songs of anger and dissent, but Radiohead no longer howl at the moon like they did on 1995's The Bends. Instead, they use eloquent metaphors and complicated arrangements to express the uncertainty, fear and anger arising from the 2000 U.S. presidential election and a post-9/11 world. There's no doubt about where Thom Yorke and company stand; the prog-rock break on "2 + 2 = 5" and Yorke's terror at the thought of being "put in a dock" make that immediately clear. But there's a prevailing sense of powerlessness here. The tinkling piano behind the cold sonic surface of "Backdrifts" and the brief, swooping melody in the middle of "Sail to the Moon" are islands in a sea of confusion. Like the band's best work, Thief requires more than a few listens to fully appreciate, but those who stick around will be richly rewarded. --Matthew Cooke

4 out of 5 stars Review 1000!.......2007-07-17

I dont know what else to say that will add to the other 999 reviews submitted for this disc. Its great, just not as great as OK computer or Kid A or even Amnesiac. I like this one better than The Bends though. Start with those three. If you like them then get this one.

1 out of 5 stars what happened?!.......2007-06-04

pablo honey was ok. the bends was revolutionary. ok computer was so beautiful. kid a was a great album but not at my first listen. amnesiac was kinda experimental and i dont like it as much.

ok time to go back to the good stuff right? wrong. driving even further away at what they were best at. ive tried like 3 or 4 times to listen to this album and like it. everytime i stop it. its boring and the songs are dumb.

hell, that thom yorke solo cd is better than HTTT.

5 out of 5 stars some radiohead soulsearching.......2007-04-13

After 6 years of radiohead album experiencing , and one year since radiohead at bonnaroo with my best friends i think i have come to the best conclusion possible.

Every album is great expect pablo honey (2 great songs, nothing else to speak of)

Amnesiac is great, i like the mysterious to all but two or three of the songs (track 03 is one of them), pyramid song is my favorite. spinning plates is amazing live.

Kid A is one of my favorites and is such a beautiful album to listen too. But not for anytime or day though. It kind of like " healing inner pain" kind of music, amazing, but sometimes. at the right time.

The bends has a similair issue as kid a. its awesome, but so emotionally charged you have to listen to it on a very special feeling day. Drive around on a beautiful day for no reason and listen to it. Feel great about life album.

Hail to the Thief is so heavy, powerful, and dark, The songs are ordered flawlessly and is like a similation of experiencing someone's inner psychology"

Ok computer is just, well.....you know. just beautiful.

Here's how i rank them at this point

1) Ok Computer

2) Hail to the Theif

3) Kid A

4) The Bends

5) Amnesiac

6) Pablo Honey

5 out of 5 stars Yesterday's headlines blown by the wind.......2007-02-23

After completely changing their sound with 2000's KID A and 2001's AMNESIAC, the fate of Radiohead seemed uncertain. Where would they go next? They'd already passed on their chance to become the world's biggest band, and they'd lost a lot of fans who loved the band for its strong, dreamy 90's alt-rock sound on the group's first three albums. It all came together in 2003, when the band suddenly reappeared with HAIL TO THE THIEF, a 14-track masterpiece spawned from the recent (negative) changes in the political landscape.

A big part of why HAIL TO THE THIEF is such a success is that the band combines the strength, aggression, and subliminal protests of their early albums with the oddity and surreal techno sound of KID A and AMNESIAC. The result is Radiohead's finest album since OK COMPUTER, and also their darkest and most unsettling. On HAIL TO THE THIEF, the band is no longer trying to take a stand. To them it seems that time is up, and they're just going to rub it in our faces, with lyrics like "We can wipe you out anytime," "You have not been paying attention," and "We tried but there was nothing we could do." Listening to this album, I can't help thinking that Radiohead is the best band since The Beatles, and that HAIL TO THE THIEF is the Radiohead equivalent to THE WHITE ALBUM, a diverse collection of songs (though these are, of course, considerably more morose than anything The Beatles ever composed). Though there's not a bad or even lackluster song in the bunch, there are a number of songs that stand out above the rest, such as the firey opener, "2+2=5" (a reference to George Orwell's masterpiece of dehumanization and paranoia, 1984), the rolling "A Punchup at a Wedding", the brilliant "Myxomatosis" (the very sound of rage), the dreamy, drifting "Sail to the Moon", the surprisingly down-to-earth "Go to Sleep" (the most "normal" Radiohead song since OK COMPUTER), and the hopeful yet bizarrely morose "A Wolf at the Door".

The band is at its finest, both performance- and composition-wise. These are some of Thom Yorke's most intricate and meaningful lyrics, to which Thom lends some of his finest vocals. Strongly supporting him are razor-edged guitar from Jonny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien, prominent bass by Colin Greenwood, and impressively varied drumming styles from Phil Selway. The album's themes deal primarily with the feeling of paranoia, distrust, suspicion, and disillusionment from the 9/11 attacks as well as the Iraq War and the U.S. government's handling of the situation (guess who the titular "Thief" is?). It was clear that Radiohead was back in a big way - they experimented on KID A and especially on AMNESIAC, and HAIL TO THE THIEF was where they combined that with their pre-Y2K sound to make one hell of an interesting recording.

4 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings........2007-02-05

I will say the same thing about Hail to the Thief that I said about Kid A. When some of the individual songs are left to stand alone, they easily earn five stars. When considered as an album, however, Hail to the Thief is a little choppy in places.

2+2=5, There There, and Go to Sleep stand out as benchmarks; songs like the Gloaming and Punchup at a Wedding, though daring and original, do not quite flow with the album as a whole. This being said, the better songs on Hail to The Thief make it a great success musically and experimentally-- but, all things considered, I don't feel it quite reached the five-star mark.

5 out of 5 stars Repackaged New Year's Concert 1984 with VPO, etc........2005-02-23

If I'm not mistaken, most of the pieces were recorded originally live during a 1984 New Year's Concert conducted by Lorin Maazel with the Vienna Philharmonic playing in its grand concert hall, the Musikverein. Maazel and the Vienna Philharmonic have had a longstanding relationship dating from the 1960's, and without question, this CD does rank among my favorite New Year's Concert performances (However, the most mesmerizing ones I've heard have been those with the late Carlos Kleiber and Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducting.) for the superb quality of the Vienna Philharmonic's playing. Maazel leads the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in some of the most popular works composed by the Strauss family, most notably Johann II Strauss' Tales from the Vienna Woods Waltz, Emperor Waltz, Pizzicato Polka, Blue Danube Waltz and his father's Radetzky March, which traditionally closes out the annual New Year's Concert. Fans of the Strauss family, Vienna Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel, will not be disappointed with this excellent two CD compilation.

5 out of 5 stars I am glad I bought this one.......2003-04-25

I listen to this cd to relax and it is so soothing. It starts with The blue Danube, which is my favorite. But the rest of the songs do not disapoint.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music as usual.......2002-10-08

This is great recording,
I enjoy listening to it
veru much. This is a
compilation of all the
favorite waltzes by
the Strauss family, that
one might hear at a
New Year's eve concert
of the Vienna Philharmonic...
All waltzes and Polkas are
favorites of audiences everywhere
in the world...

5 out of 5 stars A gem!.......2001-10-29

Who else knows Strauss better than Viennese? I attest that no other orchestra in the world plays Strauss better than the Vienna Philharmonic. Their light sound is exactly what the composer wanted, and it really makes other clumsy, heavy attempts by some other orchestras like Berlin and Chicago seem pathetic.

As far as the content of these CDs go, they are fantastic. They have every waltz, march, and polko of Strauss II that you could possibly want, as well as a nice addition of "Radetzky March" by the composer's father. If you are looking for a Johann Strauss Jr. CD, get this one!

Amazon.com essential recording

The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew Westphal

This is a terrific CD. The music is breathtaking. Just buy IT !!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The beauty of the songs brings tears to my eyes.......2002-08-21

Absolutely beautiful baroque music! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well."The Sparrow and the Gentle dove" is alone worth the price of the album! I can not stop playing it!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2001-10-31

Like in his renditions of Handel's oratorios, Robert King manages to bring a freshness and strenght to Purcell's music that I had seldom heard before. This CD also features some of the best performers of early music in the world. My favourite tracks are Oh, Fair Cedaria, sung by the multi-talented Barbara Bonney; Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher; She Loves and she Confesses too, sung by the wonderful Susan Gritton; and Welcome, Welcome Glorious Morn, sung by Rogers Covey-Crump. The only track I didn't find absolutely wonderful is Fairest Isle, sung here by James Bowman. Don't get me wrong, I generally love Mr Bowman, I think that his performance in Mr Purcell's Most Admirable Composures (also conducted by Robert King) makes it another essential Purcell recording; but I find that Fairest Isle was much better done elsewhere, particularly by Christopher Hogwood and Barbara Bonney.

These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.

5 out of 5 stars Be Welcome then, great Sirs (and Mesdames)........2001-10-20

If anyone has benefitted from the reversion in the last three or so decades to period instruments and historical reconstruction, it is Henry Purcell. Before, he was merely great, the peerless word-setter in the English language, a virtuoso of boundless range, a professional composer whose offical commissions were always imbued with personality and invention. But period instrumentation has added to this a greater depth, an other-worldly texture of sound. With his intricate, multi-part vocal writing, his preference for low, rumbling instruments such as the bass viol and the strange and remarkable theorbo, as well as his often sombre and low-key subject matter and treatment, Purcell creates a round, glowing, humming sound as pregnantly full as dub reggae.

This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.

A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.

it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Purcell Disc .......2000-11-30

With this album director and Purcell expert Robert King provides the listener with an excellent introduction to the composer's vocal works. The pieces presented here were taken from Mr. King's recordings of 'The Complete Odes and Welcome Songs', 'The Complete Anthems and Services', 'The Complete Secular Solo Songs' and diverse anthology discs. King, his wonderful soloists and musicians do the brilliance of Purcell's music fully justice. Whether he was commissioned by royalty, the church or theatre, Purcell shone in all areas. This disc certainly demonstrates the variety and originality of his craft, not to speak of his uncanny ability of setting words to music.

An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.

Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

5 out of 5 stars Hail! Hail! Rock 'N' Roll .......2007-04-29

I have always lived in the St. Louis, Mo. area and am old enough to have seen Chuck Berry when he started with the Johnny Johnston Trio at the Cosmopolitan Club in E. St. Louis, Ill. I knew then he was going to be great. The rest is history so I will fast forward to Chuck's 60th Birthday Part Fest at the lengendary, ornate Fox Theatre in St. Louis, Mo.I can listen to Chuck sing his well known songs in any format but this cd has a great sound mainly due to the influence of Keith Richards putting together a tight band and never forgetting to include the late great Johnny Johnston and his awesome piano. Chuck has the St. Louis audience into from the get go but what I really dug was that he had Eric Clapton do "Wee Wee Hours," (awesome) the fantastic and beautiful Linda Ronstadt cookin on "Back In The U.S.A." - Linda brought the house down (I was lucky to be there) and the best of all in my opinion was when Etta James sang "Rock-n-Roll Music" - oh my goodness did she really "get down" with it....that to me was the highlight of the night.Robert Cray did a nice job on "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" but it paled in comparison with the original. Julian Lennon was really good on "Johnny B. Goode." You could tell he really enjoyed singing it that night but the best part was that Chuck also sang some and then harmonized with Julian - nice! Chuck had the audience really plugged in on "Sweet Little Sixteen," "Little Queenie" and "Roll Over Beethoven." The place was litteraly going nuts and that is captured on this cd. Not too many live Chuck Berry cds out there and none that are this well put together. Buy this sucker. A nice little touch is when Chuck sings "I'm Through With Love." As a voice says in the back ground "you have a great sound for a rock-n-roll singer, you should have been a jazz singer." Chuck Berry was instrumental in getting Black music into the White culture (with all due respect to Little Richard and the great Chicago Blues singers). This is a must cd for the serious Chuck Berry fan unless you want to buy the DVD. I am glad they didn't screw this compilation up by adding "My Ding-a-ling." This was just good old hard core Chuck Berry Rock-n-Roll at it's best.

5 out of 5 stars Kick Out The Jams.......2007-02-13

Keith Richards was nearly a Stone alone at the celebrations of Chuck Berry's 60th birthday.

The concerts were held in the Fox Theatre - St. Louis, Missouri - on October 6, 1986, and Berry Park - Wentzville - on October 16. The 13 songs from the shows clock in at slightly over 39 minutes.

A documentary chronicled the oftentimes fractious relationship between Richards - who put together the band & produced the CD - and Berry, which found the latter threatening several times on camera to abandon the project.

The years leading to the shows found Berry mostly backed by local musicians who had no practice time before taking the stage. That is one of the reasons why Richards stepped in and brought together an all-star band for the event, which included Johnnie Johnson, who was a long-time pianist with Berry.

The other band members are Richards (guitar), Chuck Leavell (piano), Bobby Keys (sax), Joey Sampinato (bass), Steve Jordan (drums) and Ingrid Berry (vocals). The guests made the shows very special, as the legendary Etta James brought the house down on Rock And Roll Music. Linda Ronstadt (Back In The USA) and Julian Lennon (Johnny B. Goode) also delivered outstanding vocal performances.

Eric Clapton (guitar, vocals) is drenched in the blues on Wee Wee Hours, one of the first tracks Berry recorded for Chess Records - and the B-side to his first hit, Maybellene. But it's Robert Cray (guitar, vocals) on Brown-Eyed Handsome Man that remains my favorite cut.

Other songs that appear on the CD include Around And Around - the Rolling Stones have a great cover of it on Love You Live - Maybellene and Memphis, Tennessee.

Berry is rock-n-roll and these performances demonstrate the reason why.

5 out of 5 stars Great, simply great........2006-11-08

This documentary give you an insite into the man and his music. His music in on many CD's but this video tells a lot about the man. Very, very interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Too Bad This Video is Out of Print.......2005-07-07

A friend wanted a copy of this video and I was surprised to see Hail! Hail! Rock 'N' Roll was out of print. Hard to believe since Chuck is the godfather of rock. I bought the VHS in the early 90's and it included all the star interviews and rehearsals at Chuck's place. Total running time is 2 hrs. 1 min. This is a great video, especially the interviews and rehearsal sessions. Bluesbro, as any musician knows, you can't hog the spotlight through a whole show. The sax player you referred to that soloed that you would have rather seen Chuck solo in his place is none other than Bobby Keys, tenor sax player of the Rolling Stones since '69. I play tenor sax in 3 bands, have been playing sax since '69, and Bobby Keys has been my greatest influence. I had to write this because I hate to see Bobby Keys, one of the greatest modern rock and roll horn players, referred to as "sax player".

5 out of 5 stars Keith Richards is God.......2003-01-17

The review by 'Bluesbro' is rubish! Keith Richards is awesome on this video, perfecting the guitar playing that Chuck Berry started in the fifties. For those that have not seen the full movie, Chuck berry does not show Keith how to play Carol, Keith's own version is like dynamite. The video includes Wee Wee hours with Clapton, the best I'v heard of Clapton. Well that could just be something to do with Mr Richards on Rhythm!!

From the Label

Sacred marks John McDermott's first recording with the Irish Tenors since rejoining fellow original member Anthony Kearns and Finbar Wright (who actually replaced McDermott in 2000). The Irish Tenors live up to their reputation as "gifted interpreters" with this collection, covering a wide range of spiritual material. Sacred was produced by the Irish Tenors' long-time musical director, Arnie Roth, who has also worked with Charlotte Church, Diana Ross, and Art Garfunkel. The album was produced in Prague at the Rudlofinum and ICN Studios.

We love the Irish Tenors. They are so great. We saw them in person and enjoyed the evening

5 out of 5 stars Beyond words ..........2007-03-22

Having only recently discovered The Irish Tenors, nothing here was a repeat to me. And, even if it was, I can't imagine being disappointed.

If you are open to the idea that music can be a vehicle for a moment of sublime and sacred ecstacy, that may help convey what I find difficult to put into words.

While I live continuously and constantly in Our Father's presence, a music album such as this can certainly heighten the moment with Him.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent voices, songs and arrangements.......2006-06-17

This is an extraordinary collection. The songs are irresistible, the voices incredibly powerful and filled with appropriate emotion, and the orchestra is very simply great. You'll want to buy this album for others. Simply beautiful. A pure joy.

3 out of 5 stars Not their best album.......2006-02-27

For the most part this is an enjoyable collections of sacred music. However the inclussion of "Lord of the Dance" and other modern tunes are dreary no matter who sings them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent !!.......2005-10-26

I recently went to a concert to hear The Irish Tenors. They did several songs from this CD and it was great. If you like John McDermott as much I do then you must have this CD. This is a triple good CD with 3 top tenors.

5 out of 5 stars The very, very best Johann Strauss Jr. recordings.......2006-08-14

No orchestra in the world has ever known how to play the waltzes of Johann Strauss Jr. as well as the Wiener Philharmoniker . . . and no conductor has ever led the Philharmoniker in this repertoire in as perfect a Strauss style as Willi Boskovsky (the orchestra's long-time concertmaster). The sine qua non of Strauss playing, the famous Viennese lilting afterbeats (where the second of the three beats of the waltz tempo comes infinitesimally early, rather than in strict time) is here. Tempos perfectly "in the groove" are here. Accept no substitutes: in this repertoire, this combination of performers is the absolute gold standard.

3 out of 5 stars Sousa.......2007-07-25

I love Sousa marches but this recording while comprehensive and cheep lacks much to be desired in the musical rendension. It lacks the spark and musicality of Sousa.

5 out of 5 stars Sousa By the Royal Marines.......2007-03-31

This is a great CD re-issue of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music under Graham Hoskins. This band did a three LP series on Sousa marches some years ago that was better than most on this very well covered topic. Sousa march recordings will always come and go, but some like this stand out more than others. For one, there is nothing like the panache of a Royal Marines band. Their sound is a time honored development that gets passed from one generation to the next. Even as the number of RM bands continues to change and downsize, there are now about four bands left in the service, their sound quality continues to be superb.

When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.

This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.

Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.

5 out of 5 stars Still Among the Best.......2006-06-01

I bought two audio casettes with these marches back in the 1980's and wore them out. These performances are hard to beat for virtuosity, enthusiasm, and sparkle. The sound quality is outstanding. And there are some marches that are rarely, if at all, available.

5 out of 5 stars How Sousa Should Sound.......2006-03-07

Great value 2 cd disc set cut in the early 1980's & remastered the sound of the Royal Marines Band is nothing short of terrific. Judging by the sound would not be surprised for this to be a combined double RM band. These 1st chair players give Sousa's great marches that extra kick that takes the "March Kings" music to that higher level. By the center quick march!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

4 out of 5 stars classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

4 out of 5 stars Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hail This Record!.......2005-04-09

This album is noticeable for the fact that it has Bob Marley's backing band, "The Wailers" laying down the grooves and beats for Winston Rodney (aka Burning Spear). The album features a terrific drawing by Neville Garrick depicting Haile Selassie in full imperial dress riding a white horse, with the sand dunes of Ethiopa as the backdrop. This album released in 1980, was never released in the United States until the Heartbeat CD of this album came out in 1994! Was the shunning of this album by America for fourteen years due to the fact that the record was no good? Here are my reviews of the songs based out of 5 *****:
"Hail H.I.M." - Hail H.I.M. (His Imperial Majesty) starts with Winston shouting "Hail Jah Rastafari!" A very laid-back, mellow, thick groove starts the journey. "Hail HIM" is chanted in the background throughout the song. Aston lays down a funky, grooving bass line that is very dub like. The groove is soooo heavy, the thickness/heaviness is almost palpable! It feels as if a cloud of thick smoke is hanging/shrouding the piece (and there proably was)! A GREAT TUNE! Rating - *****
"Columbus" -The keyboards are more prominant here, along with chugging guitar, congas and heavy bass lines. This song tells the tale of how the Arawak Indians were were the first people in the "Americas" NOT Mr. Columbus. "Christopher Colombus is a damn-blasted liar!" shouts Winston with a ton of emotion. "He's a liar!" is repeated as the song closes out. Another FANTASTIC tune with some thought-provoking lyrics. Rating - *****
"Road Foggy" - The horn section introduces this tune, accompanied with some great multiple percussion instruments and cool triangle playing. Very heavy bass lines again from the "Family Man". He keeps a groovy, melloooow beat going throughout the piece. A very moody, heavy atmosphere permeates this song. Winston sings "The road is so foggy, foggy. So foggy, foggy." Probably from the thick smoke of the burning Kind! Hypnotic! Rating - ****
"Follow Marcus Garvey" - Aston begins this with ANOTHER heavy bass groove, accompanied with low Tenor and Alto sax playing in the background. Chugging guitar, and smooth guitar licks from Junior Marvin gives this piece some added punch. You'll want to catch the next "Black Star Liner" out of town after listening to Winston preach! Rating - ****
"Jah See And Know" - The horn section takes front stage on this piece. Thumping bass and chugging guitars. DAMN! Aston Barrett has to the HEAVIEST/FUNKIEST cat to walk this planet! This guy can keep a groove going like no-one else! "Your hearts desire. Your meditations. Your thinking. Your doing. Jah Jah see and know yes." That can either be good news or BAD news! Rating - *****
"African Teacher" - Keyboards kick off this piece and a chugging guitar soon follows. Junior gets in some great guitar licks and Aston lays down the thick beat. "Teach me teacher" is chanted in the backgound. Conga rolls from Winston are heard throughout. A great, moody, "Teach me Aramaic teacher!" song! Classic! Rating - *****
"African Postman" - My favorite cut from this album. Opens with Winston lecturing his son about the "African Postman". Repeated chime clanging helps to herald in the postman and call everyone to hear the latest news. "Them a Holy folk." proclaims Winston and this phrase is chanted repeatedly in the background. Aston lays down a VERY HEAVY bass groove! Awesome song! Rating - *****
"Cry Blood Africans" - Winston wails "Cry Blood Africa!" at the start of this tune. Winston's sadness is apparant and very emotive. Chunky bass and moody horns add dimension. "Cry Africa" is chanted in the background. "The whole world feels it when the African continent cry." Rating - ****
"Jah a Guh Raid" - I love this song. Winston's anger/feelings come through like a Burning Spear! "Raid em' Jah" is chanted in the background while Winston's call for vengance "You raid em'! Someone gots to pay!" sends chills down your spine. "You raid em' Jah!" pleads Winston! Keyboards are prominant as well as chugging guitar. GREAT tune! RAting - *****
This album is a CLASSIC piece of music! The refusal to release this record in America for FOURTEEN years just proves that the powers that be fear the masses having knowledge. This album is a stirring call for the world to WAKE UP and realize they are being duped! Winston Rodney crafted one fo the greatest records ever. This is a classic piece of MUSIC that will educate, invigorate and spur debate wherever it is heard. Feed your soul. Get this album!

5 out of 5 stars Reggae Masterpiece...........2005-03-06

In 1980, Winston Rodney, better known as the "Burning Spear", turned to The Wailers bass player Aston "Family Man" Barret to produce his first EMI album. Spear was seeking a major career breakthrouh in a period of rapidly changing tastes. The Roots Reggae had reached its climax in the mid seventies and by the end of the decade it seemed to deteriorate, giving place to other external musical influence and even some incipient prototypes of dance-hall style. "But people who are interested in our music will get to hear it. I can't beg" Burning Spear told once, in an environment where disco music prevailed in regular airplay and musical charts. The album is divided between hymns to JAH Rastafari, chants of repatriation to the mother land of Africa, and accurates historic descriptions:"First gangster/first bad boy/first rude boy/Cristopher Columbus!".
Spear's outstanding 1980 album is complete from beginnimg to end, no weak side at all. I guess I can't say this from many albums made this year, including Marley's "Uprising"(who by these period was trying hard to get to black american audience)."Hail H.I.M." must be listened very carefully and open minded considering you're being part of a musical masterpiece experience where every song paves the way to the next one.Musicians included Nelson Miller on drums, Junior Marvin on lead guitar, Tyrone Downie and Earl Lindo on keyboards, Family Man Barret on bass plus a horn section. This trascendant album can easily be considered as reggae's peak achievement, chek it out you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars The Making of an International Star.......2005-01-30

The first of three albums Winston Rodney did for EMI and the one that springboarded him to international fame, if you were to buy only one Burning Spear album, this should be it! Be warned, however that this is some heavy, heavy roots! If you're looking for an album with nice, little reggae tunes to sing along with you will be dissapointed. But that doesn't mean this CD isn't for you. On the contrary, this is an incredable set for anyone who likes reggae music at all. And if you're looking to expand your Roots Reggae experience beyond Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, this is perfect.

I got this CD because everywhere I turned I was always reading rave reviews on it. The 30 sec intros didn't do a thing for me but I took a chance and bought it anyway thinking that if it was as good as the reviews said I would eventually appriciate it. When I first heard the whole thing all the way through, I didn't know what to think. The music, overall seemed really dry and I couldn't tell one song from another. None of the tracks seemed to have any structure at all (although "African Teacher" seemed to strike me right away). I listened to it more and more determined to be happy with what I purchased and to learn why this was such a classic but it just wasn't working. "There must be something I'm missing," I said to myself. One day I was listening to it in the car on a long drive and it was getting so oppressive I had to change it.

....I don't know at what point my opinion of this cd changed but now I think it's on of the greatest Reggae albums ever created! I listen to it all the time. One of the few albums I can listen to all the way through even. How could I ever think the things I did before? How could this be anything but great music? Why didn't I see it right away? Burning Spear is a genius! Today it seems like every time I set out to buy a new reggae CD, it ends up being another Burning Spear.

My suggestion: put on the headphones, turn it up just high enough not to hurt your ear drums, close your eyes and listen to the whole thing. No distractions, no interuptions. I don't know if others have had the same experience with this CD as I did, but if you're not impressed with it at first either, I urge you to persevere. It is a priceless treasure and belongs in your reggae collection.

4 out of 5 stars Old School Roots.......2004-07-27

This is classic old school roots reggae at its finest. For those Spear fans who are into the Marcus Garvey LP, this is right along those lines. With "Familiy Man" from the Wailers producing and on the bass, the entire package is increadible.
From the very first note you'll be itching to whip out a spliff.
Foggy Road and African Postman are my current faves from this album, with Hail HIM and Columbus right behind them.

5 out of 5 stars Hail Burning Spear.......2004-05-08

I could not believe how wonderful this CD is. I can not listen to this CD enough. If I had to only own one reggae CD (god forbid) it would be this one.
