4 out of 5 stars Best Comprehensive Survey of Canadian Music Available.......1999-01-19

This anthology of three Centuries(!) of Canadian music was assembled by a former producer from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation who now works for Naxos Canada. This producer is also active in the Canadian music world, so he knows whereof he speaks (or selects, as in this case). Liscensing the best performances available from major Canadian and International labels, this is the best collection of, and introudction to, the entire Canadian music scene that I have ever come across. The booklet is informative and is as enjoyable a read as is the 2 CD set is to listen. I doubt there will ever be anything quite like it again. If only NAXOS would now start recording Canadian music on top of the Canadian artists they already record, than they will truly have one of the finest and most comprehensive classical catalogues in the world. As for now, don't pass this one up.

    This album is chock-full of excellent early trip/hop tracks most influenced by jazz and r&b. This (and the Volume 1 edition) introduced me to trip-hop and eventually electronic music in the early 90's, and to this day I still listen to it when I want some mellow but not at all boring or newagey music to chill by. Kruder & Dorfmeister, Massive Attack, Portishead and Hooverphonic fans will probably find this record to their liking.

    This recording brings drum & bass jungle to a current level of hip-hop awareness with its ability to fuse after-club drive-home twilight fuzzies with down-to-silicon beats even a newbe would appreciate. No played-out Pentium 1 rehash! A serious five-*!

    Excellent cd for yoga vinyasa practice or simply for listening. I don't know why there haven't been reviews on this yet. I am a yoga instructor and found it hard to find music that keeps us flowing in the class throughout the practice. Well, this is one of the rare ones, believe me! Soothing, melodious chanting which helps elevate the spirit of a group class...

      5 out of 5 stars A cinematic experience for the soul........2001-05-21

      To this day, I am astonished that Akasha's Cinematique has gone almost completely unnoticed by most of the music world. After listening to this captivating release (as well as Cinematique Remixed), I am baffled as to how and why it slipped through the cracks. Akasha is one of those rare groups whose sound transcends genres...a sound which by all rights should have no problems finding an audience. Although it might be classified under downtempo today, Cinematique contains many different styles...but is kept cohesive by one base element: jazz. From the lounge-soaked sound of "Akasha Theme", to the gorgeous horns and beats of "Crazy Baby", you can almost taste the jazz textures...as well as a touch of rare groove. There are several samples incorporated into Akasha's compositions; however, they are perfectly suited to the songs, and do not get in the way of the group's musical prowess and presence. Cinematique also features a few special guests: Maxi Jazz (Faithless) lends his voice to a couple of tracks, and Neneh Cherry sings on the splendid, unique revisitation of "Sweet Child of Mine". To this day, I have yet to find a group that performs on this level of sophistication...hopefully, someone will realize that this album MUST be reissued...maybe Wall of Sound will license it out to Astralwerks, as they did with labelmates Les Rhythmes Digitales. Until that time, try to pick this up by any means possible...Akasha is essential listening.

      before this i didnt even know i liked jazz. and i have been in love with it since. i love the way the music dynamically takes you with it and leaves you with a sensation of something that doesnt belong to this earthly existance. a feeling of being soft and melting. ability to become some kind of fume that can float over meanings and all common sense. actually its the music that floats, theres no other way of describing it, its movement. since ive discovered this kind of music very recently i dont really know much about it so i cant compare it with anything. but im telling - its amazing how theres always a probability of finding something new, things you cant imagine to have been able to live without.

      The first thing that becomes obvious after listening to "Love Philtre Magick" is that you can't easily categorise it. If at all, that is..
      Throughout the 13 songs the mood shifts from eerie easy-listening sounds to doomy vocals (as well as lyrics) even to some light hearted drum n bass as well as several soundtrack-sounding passages.
      In comparison with their previous album this is certainly an effort to mix things up more. But in the end, what counts in cases like this is the final result. It doesn't matter how many times you put your ideas in a blender or the quantity of the ideas themselves but how they all stand together and deliver.

      In that respect "Love Philtre Magick" is a definite winner.

      Keeps you interested but, more importantly, keeps you curious. And that's the ace up the sleeve here as you can't know what to expect as you listen through the album, the surprises keep coming and coming.
      The element that's most welcome, at least for my tastes, is that this album has a subtle but constantly noticeable dark side to it. Piano as well as violins contribute to the LP's moody atmosphere. Certainly fits more to autumn than summer even though it's released on a June. It's a dark side that kinda creeps in on you as the songs progress, undoubtedly much helped by the weird lyrics, stories that seem to be inspired by thriller films.
      Check it out if you're looking for some fresh takes on electronica.
