    5 out of 5 stars Great.......2001-02-15

I think that a band who makes song like these should be more famous.. I mean You look so fine is a great song, and it's greater in the F.L.C. remix. It sound better, and you're able to listen to Shirley'voice at its best. Therefore the atmosphere of the song is warmer, and I think that it's the right song to listen to with the person that you love :)

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27

Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barker's Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasn't a large italianate soprano; the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.

She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.

Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.

This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.

I like the remix on this disc, but the other disc has SOLDIER THROUGH THIS which is a far superior b-side. It also has the FLC version which is like an acoustic version of the song! get that instead..

5 out of 5 stars Much more then a single!.......2000-06-09

I usually don't care for remixes because they're never as good as the original song, but, this is so not the case with this CD! Both remixes of "You look so fine" are excellent and the extra song "Get bizzy with the fizzy" is fun and phenomenal! It's definitely a side of them I've never heard before. If you're a Garbage fan, you'll love this CD!

What can I say? Yet another fabulous single by the superb band Garbage. I have to admit that at first I wasn't extremely impressed with "Get Bizzy With The Fizzy" in it's entirety but after listening to it more than once, it's become one of my favorite b-sides. It sort of has a Chrissy Hynes of the Pretenders feel about it. Some example lyrics "Let's make out in the back of your car,... We can always get lost in a crowd, are you ready to get deep down? Wa-hoo!" & "Now I am busy Saturday but I am free tonight and I might have to sort you out if you don't do it right" This song I felt was very un-garbage when I heard it, but now I love it. You won't be dissapointed I promise!!

    5 out of 5 stars great!.......2000-05-05

i bought this cd on a splurge, b/c it was on sale, and i would like to be able to collect Garbage b-sides, xcept it gets a bit expensive. but i'd heard Soldier Through This before, and loved it. it's a hauntingish song, it gives me chills. it's more of a ballad, the same idea as the title track, but so gorgeous! i still love it, after listening who knows how many times. i didn't like the remix at first, b/c i'm not a big jazz person, but then i had to go back and listen again, it's a different spin on the song, a little more acoustic and not as polished, but i really like it! i highly reccomend this single.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Single Ever!.......2000-03-04

I am a huge Garbage fan, and I feel that this is THE best single ever! For once, the remix of the main song is actually really good, in fact, I'd say better than the original 'you look so fine'! Shirley gets to excercise her vocal cords a bit more than normal. =) Also, the song 'soldier through this' is one of the most emotional, gorgeous songs I've ever heard . . . I cannot put it into words how much I adore this song! It isn't too slow, nor too fast, it is absolutely perfect, glorious trash! Any Garbage fan (I think anyone on this earth :p) would like this song. You absolutely must buy this single, if you're to buy any. :) Cheers!

    4 out of 5 stars Great Investment.......1999-09-28

This is a great single. The remix of You Look So Fine takes some of the emotion and atmosphere from the song, but i heard it at a club and i was totally psyched. The b-side "Soldier Through This" is a great requiem about in adequacy and superiority and how they interfere with a relationship, or at least that's how i interpreted it. A recommendation... the 3" limited edition garbage single. It comes shrink wrapped and combines b-sides and remixes from part 1 and 2 of the You Look So Fine singles. Enjoy!

This CD actually has five tracks:-

      You Look So Fine (original)
      Get Busy With The Fizzy
      Soldier Through This
You Look So Fine - Fun Lovin' Criminals Version
You Look So Fine - Deep Drama Mix Edit

The last two are interesting takes of the original. Very different, but very well done nonetheless. The other songs are excellent as well.

      5 out of 5 stars Very Fine.......2002-06-21

Garbage is one of those rare bands whose B-sides are as good as their full-length albums. These little jewels are very coveted by fans, and I've personally spent over $150 collecting them. This one is a particular favorite. "Get Busy With the Fizzy" is a delight. The very personal-sounding lyrics of "Soldier Through This" and Shirley's emotional performance make this song especially moving. So whether you're a rabid fan of Garbage or just a casual one, this single is highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great, including the B-sides!.......2000-05-22

"You Look So Fine" is a wonderful song, but I actually liked "Soldier Through This", and "Get Busy With the Fizzy" are actually better! They have such great tunes to them, I don't know why they didn't put them out on an album! The re-make of "You Look So Fine" isn't all that, but the other three songs are worth of purchasing the single :)

      5 out of 5 stars Stellar!.......1999-06-19

As usual, Garbage makes buying their singles worthwhile. The B-sides, "Get Busy with the Fizzy" and "Soldier Through This" are strong songs in their own right and worth the price of the single. (I'm not sure which is on this set, so be sure to buy all the parts to the single). Get Busy with the Fizzy has this keen Blondie/New Wave twist to it. It's an amazingly fun tune. Soldier Through This is more of a ballad and about that age old problem of someone wanting more than their lover can give. My best friend says it's respect, I say it's sex. Buy it, listen, and decide for yourself. Shirley Manson really put in a fine performance. Oh! And before I forget, if you liked the album version of You Look So Fine and if you like jazz, then you'll LOVE the new arrangement by The Fun Lovin' Criminals. They call it a remix, but really, it's a fresh approach to the song. I'm telling you, acoustic arrangements and Shirley Manson were made for each other. Which reminds me, Shirley fans will want to check out the band Angelfish.

2 out of 5 stars The single version of YLSF is EDITED on this German import.......2000-11-09

This is one of my favorite songs on Version 2.0. I wasn't too impressed with the "Fizzy" b-side here; the FLC version is down-tempo -- slow and jazzy, and evokes images of a sad, sultry siren singing in a cigarette-smoke filled, sparsely populated Las Vegas (... no, make that "Reno, NV")lounge. The Eric Kuyper dance remix butchers the innate beauty of the song.

My biggest complaint, however, is that the original version of the song is edited (ie, cut short from the proper album version). You know the end of the song on Version 2.0, where the song segues off into about a minute or more of instrumentation and beats? Well, it lasts about 20 seconds on THIS CD single. I just got to love this song so much that that small section of music is one of the highlights of the song for me, and its absence is glaringly evident.

4 out of 5 stars YES YES YES YES! I LOVE IT!.......2000-06-15

Well this and two others are my first Garbage singles that I've bought. I have both albums of course. But like of course the first track is cool. It's so sad it just speaks to me. It sounds like she's speaking this maybe a lover and she like wants him telling him how she's better than those other chicks he's dealing with. Shirley Manson just sounds so nice and just honest. That sounds something I'd say. So I love the lyrics. The music is so appropraiate. At first the song was like too slow and I didn't like it. But it's grown on me. It takes time but it's very cool. Then there's "Get Bizzy With the Fizzy" Which is a great song. It's not like anything that I've ever heard from Garbage. It's so fun and bouncy but it still has that great GArbage flavor. I wish it wasn't so short of course. When the song ends I'm always begging for more. The Fun Lovin Criminals version? Well....I must be honest as much as I love Garbage this isn't a favorite of mine. It's just too slow. I was bored the first time I heard it. But I hear shirley manson's voice more clearly. And the song feels more like a poem instead of a song cause the music is just way too slow and not really for me. Anyways the last track, oh yes! I love it! I first heard when I was in Abercrombie and Fitch and have been in love ever since. I heard it one time and I knew I have been dreaming about this remix ever since. It's so smashing. The music makes a big difference. Shirley Manson sounds so demanding and powerful. And of course it makes me wanna dance! So I know this is a long review but I just had so much to say about this great single! I recommend it to any true Garbage fan. I of course plan to buy more singles soon. I'm like addicted. I have to hear every Garbage song out there! So buy this single. Go with it flow with it and you'll see what I mean! :)

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-10-25

I went out on a limb and bought this CD (my first single). I am very happy that I did. Unlike many other remixes by other artists, these songs are resung, not just remixed. I will have to go and get a few more Garbage singles now despite the import cost.

2 out of 5 stars Color me "disappointed".......1999-08-23

Well, I am a super-fan of remixes, and to say the least....I was let down. Even "Get Busyy With The Fizzy" was a downer.

Make no mistake, the original album version has the most feeling and cannot be improved upon.

        5 out of 5 stars very good.......1999-08-02

As a big fan of garbage, i was interested in getting this single as soon as it came out. I really like the song and unlike usual, I also really like the remixes of the song. The Fun Lovin' Criminals did a nice job remixing one of the versions of the song. Even though the b-side song "Get Busy With The Fizzy" is a little strange, i got used to it. This maybe my favorite single that i own. As their last single off of the album, i think its a good place to end this album. I am anxiously awaiting their next album!
