There have been many milestones in film music history that have resonated through the decades finding new audiences and inspiring new recordings.

Unique among them is "The Egyptian," a major collaboration between uber-composers Bernard Herrmann (to whom the film was assigned) and Alfred Newman (20th Century-Fox Music Department head and all-time great composer/conductor). While Herrmann got the initial assignment, the allotted time was inadequate for him to do justice to the film. Newman stepped in and developed thematic materials which Herrmann incorporated into his own desginated sections of the film, while Newman the rest.

In my opinion, "The Egyptian" -- as a film -- stands well above most epics of the 50s, but it has some serious detractors who, for whatever reasons, find no value in the authentic atmosphere, fantastic sets, stunning cinematography and brilliant music underscoring. Add to that some solid performances from Victor Mature, Jean Simmons, Peter Ustinov and Michael Wilding (plus a stolid, if uninvolving leading performance by Edmund Purdom) and you really get a stunning piece of entertainment that holds the attention, dazzles the eyes and ears and becomes emotionally involving. Wilding, as the pharaoh, has the film's -- and one of filmdom's -- best moments near the end of the film. Newman's underscoring for that scene -- called "Death of Akhnaton" -- is an example of what film scoring is all about. It also heightens awareness of what seems to be missing from many of today's film composers resumes -- intensive education in music theory, counterpoint, harmony and exposure to all forms of music. The scene is breathtaking, heartbreakingly performed and musically overwhelming, although the music is always "under" the scene rather than rampaging over it.

There are so many wonderful pieces of music in this film that I acknowledge my inadequacy to present a case for them. The proof is in the listening. From the awe-inspiring opening to the exquisite theme for "Merit" to the sinuous, hypnotic theme for "Nefer", Herrmann and Newman have created a musical palette of stunning splendors. There is no other soundtrack album like it.

I cannot overstate its importance, the splendiferousness of its performance on this recording by the 20th Century-Fox Studio Orchestra as conducted by Alfred Newman, and the glorious choral work of Newman's right-hand man, Ken Darby.

This is film music history. Any collection without it is hollow.

the music of The Fall is both engaging and off-putting...equal parts clever and brilliant mixed with the confounding and annoying. the casual fan of punk or post rock will probably be confused. and that my friends, may be the point. or maybe not. you decide. take a listen.
Room To Live is not an essential Fall record..but worth a spin or two. it's nice to see it re-issued with some bonus flub. does adding 6 extra songs make a mini album a full grown album?

    Trina Hamlin's music is so rich and soulful it's impossible to focus anything else when it's in the room. I highly recommend all of her CD's.

    I had the pleasure of seeing Trina perfom in an intimate setting and was blown away. Trina has an amazing voice and plays an intense harmonica. Her music has a way of reaching into your soul and truly moving you. I highly recommend seeing her live if you are able, and recommend puchasing this CD, as well as her first release, Alone.

    Trina Hamlin is truly the best thing to happen soul music in ages! As said in previous reviews seeing Ms. Hamlin in concert is an acoustic thrill ride you'll never forget. And this disc is the next best thing to her live shows. With her combination of perfection in voice, lyrics, guitar, and harmonica (yes, that's her playing in the beginning of the disc), she's a musical force not to be reckoned with!

        I think the reason for the confusion on some of the customer reviews on this title stem from the fact that Cog Sinister released a bonus version of this disc for the first couple thousand discs: The version I have has TWO DISCS -- one disc w/ the 7 tracks & 2 hidden tracks, then a BONUS DISC with 4 live tracks running about 20 minutes or so. From what I can surmise the live recording is from 1982 & features 4 songs from the Room to Live album. So, if you want the 2-disc version, you've gotta get the limited, out of print double disc set (the first 2000 made of this disc). Hope this helps.

        At long last, The fall's Early 80's recording reissued on Cog-Sinister! And unlike some of these reissues this one has excellent sound, packaging, etc. Although this looks like a 7-song E.P., the songs are long and there are two unlisted bonus tracks! (The single "Lie-Dream/Fantastic Life") These are all studio recordings, although I notice the entry lists it as a 'live' album. It aint. But it's gear all the same...One of their better L.P.'s!

        Some of the material is sparse and lacking in form or hook. And this was only an EP! The better tracks here are on the "Hip Priest and Kamerads" CD version, so I recommend that instead.

              First Released in 1982, "Room to Live" is Still Regarded by Some to Be the Quintessential Fall Object. Coming after the Epiphany that was Hex Enduction Hour, Room to Live's Value Lies in Its Relaxed and Scattershot Approach and Its Willingness to Experiment and Possibly Fail. Inspired by Events that Hit Britain around Spring of `82, the Tracks Takeon the Falklands War, TV Pundits and Provincial Living. In `hard Life in Country', Smith Actually Gets Too Much Room to Live and the Song Ends as the Villagers Surround his House Like the End of a Frankenstein Movie. `solicitor in Studio' is One of the Highpoints of the Album as the Track Slowly Gathers Steam Then Lurches Into Life as Smith Declares, "young Chicks Make TV! Get `em Away from Me!", the Bile and Invective Never More Apparant. This Expanded Edition Adds Bonus Live Tracks Recorded from Various Venues around the UK During 1982 and `83.
