Karl's neo-psychedelic masterpiece.......2007-05-25
Is this album is at the mercy of the seven deadly reviews? I hope not - it's one of my favorites... You might fault it for its many shameless 60's rock references, and its preach-it-brother tone might not be your cup of tea, but the songs are alternately clever and poignant, and evokes a post-punk angry-young-man-grows-up-and-smells-the-flowers vibe that this reviewer finds irresistable.
Not Everything from the Eighties Sucked.......2007-01-10
I always loved this album, since it came out way back when CD's were just beginning to replace the beloved vinyl LP. The album, happily, has held up very well. My favorites are the excellent "Ship of Fools", still applicable today. The haunting "All Come True". A pretty good remake of Dylan's "All I Really Want To Do". And the superb final track, a scathing piece of introspection "It's All Mine". Karl Wallinger was/is a good lyricist, in same vein as Dylan/U2/Waterboys. Musically he was fairly experimental on this, going from the straight ahead rock of "Ship Of Fools" to other tracks in a more Prince like musical feel. Highly enjoyable.
Make Private Revolution Public... Tell Your Friends About World Party.......2006-11-04
This was World Party's debut, and featured their almost-hit "Ship Of Fools," which deserved to be a bigger deal, and I believe is the band's only charting single in the US. No matter... there are some other great songs on this rock tinged with new wave album, including World Party, Private Revolution and The Little Man Within. Karl Wallinger left The Waterboys to do his own thing, World Party, and this first release certainly set the bar high. Of course, longtime fans know that World Party completely delivered with their next album, Goodbye Jumbo, which is a true classic rock record that anyone calling him/herself an enthusiast should have.
Didn't I Hear This Before ?? Contemporary Playback.........2006-07-20
This multi instrumentalist artist left The Scottish Mott The Hoopleish Van Morrison type of band,The Waterboys, to be on his own for a Utopian dream of rock and roll idyllic passion, and with this really fine album, Karl was able to fuse 1960's psychedelia's finest from The Beatles, bluesy Dylan, strong hint of Mick Jagger's singing and posturing to the dynamic LA hipsters of that day, The Doors, and Arthur Lee's Love, fast forward to incorporate The melodrama and bittersweet sophistication of Echo and The Bunnymen with a touch of funk and Beach Boys harmonies rolled in with a gloss of sincere ruminations on peace and love in the vein of Timothy Leary and this sprighty synthesized often happy wash of sound is World Party. The funny thing is that despite the collective unconscious at work here, the whole CD plays well and rocks and serves as a reminder of all those great trends within music. The whole thing clicks and still manages to sound ORIGINAL coming from a One Man Band..waiting to hear the remastered version, the original CD sounds fine akin in spirit to the studio wizadry of a Prince, the self absorbed classic of Paul McCartney's 1st album, and the mystical solo greatness of Pete Townsend's, Who Came First.
Private Revolution may be a solo effort but it sounds like a band.

Album Description
Errol Morris' adroitly assembled documentary film "The Fog of War" examines the career of Robert S. McNamara-- United States Secretary of Defense during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations and whose tenure includes the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crises. Combining excerpts from 26 hours of interviews with McNamara, archival footage, filmed recreations, as well as newly declassified White House recordings Morris' filmmaking illuminates a national past that ominously parallels the contemporary political present. Morris reveals what previous biographies failed to investigatethe relationship between McNamara and the infamous United States General Curtis LeMay and their involvement in the firebombing of Tokyoalong with 67 other Japanese citiesin 1945. Errol Morris states "The easy thing to say would be McNamara is a bad guy, he did all these bad things...the story is more complex and far more interesting than I imagined. The disturbing thing is that this was a man with real ethical dimension who did something terrible."
As with music previously contributed to Morris' films, Philip Glass' score to "The Fog of War" effortlessly supports and enhances the film. The music, at times lyrical and at other times intense, deepens the horrifying images of war, highlighting the ambiguities of McNamara's characterand the consequences of his actions. Glass' music reinforces Morris' effort to understand the difficult ethical questions about governing and power raised by "The Fog of War".
Album Description

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2006-08-09
Intriguing historical account of MacNamara- what he was thinking, what he did not say during two administrations involved in the Viet Name war. Use of film footage and Philip Glass' eerie and ominous soundtrack further developed the power of this film.
The film was great, but the score made it outstanding. .......2004-08-05
Ever thought about what it would be like to watch a film with no muscial score? I have and I did for this documentary. Believe me when I write this, there's no way this film would have been as good without Glass' melodic brutality looming in the background.
Glass does something wonderful with this score; he gives war, uncertainty, doubt and fear a musical element, an audible personality that captures each bomb, burnt building and ominous threat in complete perfection, leaving your ears and your mind in a state of disbelief and amazement, thinking to yourself, "Wow, that music fits this segment like a glove."
The Thin Blue Line score made me an instant Glass fan but this score made me borderline Glass fanatic.
In my opinion, he surpasses Carter Burwell in the category of most unflinching film composer.......by a long shot.
A Great Soundtrack for a Great Film.......2004-05-24
Errol Morris is the best documentary film maker ever and The Fog of War is his crowning achievement. The film explores the complexity of war and how it evolves. There is no political bias or agenda here...just plain truth and facts. Great work. Equal to the task is Phillip Glass's soundtrack. The music is haunting and eerie.
ANOTHER GREAT GLASS SCORE!.......2004-03-31
I'll keep this review short, just like the length of the pieces on the CD. This is yet another great score by Glass, and superbly recorded as well. Glass uses his classic strings and percussion to great effect and oftentimes great surprise as well.
This score has more variety than Glass's score for another Morris film, "The Thin Blue Line". By the way, will "The Thin Blue Line" ever get released on DVD?
The pieces are all short ones, which makes it an easier listen for Glass newbies I would imagine, but I would have preferred a few longer pieces- all the short pieces make it sound like "Glass fragments"- on some pieces once Glass gets going he has to come to a stop.
Still, I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful CD!
Glass' dramatic score is Fog's 'secret sauce'.......2004-03-22
If you've seen Errol Morris' "The Fog of War," you know that a big part of what makes the movie click is Phillip Glass' outstanding soundtrack. Morris and Glass have worked together before and it shows. Morris' imagery (the falling dominos, the accelerating list of Japanese cities, JFK's slow-blinking visage before TV cameras) appears to be literally lifted off the screen into 3-D by the strength of Glass' score. I don't think you'll find another movie (certainly no other documentary) where the words, images and music mesh with such dramatic effect.

Techies outsmart themselves..........2007-05-25
Yes, by all means buy the highly compressed limited MP3 version of this to which Apple retains most of the rights rather than your very own cd which you actually own and can do whatever you want with... especially if you are somewhat deaf and don't really appreciate music all that much.
Bring on the Revolution.......2006-07-14
Until I bought this album a couple of weeks ago the only World Party song I knew was "Ship of Fools". It's a song I've liked for ages, and they still show the clip on TV every now and then. There's a bit of stop-motion animation of a toy ship sliding along on newspaper, Karl Wallinger bears more than a passing resemblence to John Lennon, and there's some superimposed pieces of stock footage to reinforce the political leanings of the song. Nearly twenty years after it was released, "Private Revolution" is now available remastered on CD.
The eleven tracks on "Private Revolution" are a mellifluous mix of catchy, unforgettable tunes, with a heavy 60s influence. I play the album almost every day. One could say that the album is about humanity, there are little observations about human nature, good and bad, scattered throughout the songs.
For me "The Ballard of the Little Man" seems to be about how people are so easily seduced by feelings of greed and profligacy, the urge to accumulate wealth and power at the expense of morality. (This is all encompassed by the seven deadly sins, which get mentioned at the start of the song.) Karl Wallinger sounds a bit like Eric Burdon when he sings this song.
The track "World Party" suggests to me a call for unity, bringing on a utopian, harmonious community, an idealistic celebration for the brotherhood of man. (The kind of things John Lennon was interested in.)
The single "Ship of Fools" makes me think of how we're trapped by conformity as we get encouraged, or coerced, by the media and society in general to chase the dream: irresistable promises of power, wealth and status that are tantalisingly out of reach. Go after them at any cost, to hell with the consequences. Let our descendants worry about the cost. That's what I think when I hear the line "save me from tomorrow". To me there's a feeling of wanting to break out of the herd mentality when the chorus says "I don't want to sail with this ship of fools".
"Private Revolution" is a great album with politically motivated messages but it isn't preachy. There's a very pleasant instrumental called "Dance of the Hoppy Lads" and the short but touchingly sweet "It Can Be Beautiful Sometimes", sung in falsetto with a sitar playing in the background. Karl Wallinger demonstrates his versatility and gives the listener lots to think about at the same time.
Now available in iTunes.......2006-03-13
Don't get ripped off by these people selling this album for outrageous prices. Its recently been added to iTunes for $9.99.
Desert Island Disc.......2005-02-25
This is one of those CDs that I've never been able to put out of my head. From day one it's been on my list of quick repeats. Flows perfectly from slow ballads to upbeat pop. I find Beatles and Waterboys influence...but it's more than that. If I could have only 10 CDs on an island, Private Revolution and Goodbye Jumbo by World Party would take up two slots. I've never gotten sick of either. I highly recommend this disc if you can find a copy.
A classic by the highly underrated Karl Wallinger........1999-06-11
Okay, record label guys. Please crank out a few more of these--I had this on vinyl when it first came out and I need to have it on CD to go along with my other World Party albums. I recently heard "Ship of Fools" and was reminded of how terrific this album is, and I'm itching to add it to my CD collection. The recent CD by the New Radicals (Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too) completely reminded me of World Party. Note to Karl Wallinger: please crank out more music soon.

"All Aboard".......2003-03-29
I bought this album not long after it came out in 1986. The only song I'd heard from it was "Ship of Fools". I didn't care much for the rest but grew to like nearly the entire album. "All Come True" is one of the best songs, follow the bass to get the full effect. Another of my favorites is "It Can Be Beautiful (Sometimes)", which I didn't see mentioned. I've read that the following album "Goodbye Jumbo" is the magnum opus but I don't believe so. This is one of the best albums from '86 and has a different sound than most of the rock that was playing then. "Ship of Fools" has a message that still holds true today.
BLAST FROM THE PAST.......2001-07-27
World Party and Lenny Kravitz are often referred to a retro rockers but I find them both to be very creative and brilliant songwriters. Frankly I would rather listen to this c.d. than just about anything put out in the last year. There is a wide variety of music here too. Rock-Funk in "Is It Too Late?". Smooth falsetto soul in "Ain't Gonna Come Til I'm Ready". Retro rock on "When the Rainbow Comes", Pop on "Put the Message In the Box", the classic ballad "When I Fell Back Alone" and the late Beatles period sounding "Thank You World". Great music from a very talented man.
My all time favorite album.......2000-11-25
This is my all time favorite album. I'm not a music critic so I wouldn't do the album justice to try and convince anyone based on words. You've simply gotta listen to the best music on the planet. I have been trying to find a copy of the "Ship of fools" video now for years without success. Now that Karl has rereleased his older albums with the videos he'll be parting me from even more of my cash! Way to go Karl.
