Since Toby Keith's commercial success and canny image manipulation show how shrewd he is, perhaps the best explanation for songs as lackluster as "Note to Self" (a generic Rolling Stones arrangement with a hokey lyric) and "Runnin' Block" (about bedding an unattractive woman for the benefit of a buddy) are either laziness or pandering. On White Trash with Money, his first release on his own Show Dog imprint (and without longtime producer James Stroud), Keith occasionally appears to be stretching himself--on the string-laden balladry of "A Little Too Late," the tender "Crash Here Tonight," and perhaps his finest vocal performance to date on "Too Far This Time"--but often seems to be coasting. "Get Drunk and Be Somebody," "Grain of Salt," and "Brand-New Bow" are never less (and little more) than dumb fun, while "Can't Buy You Money" is a clever twist on the "money can't buy you love" adage. The most contentious track here, "Ain't No Right Way," is just waving a red flag at those who refuse to reduce complex issues to simple black-and-white. Keith insists that he only writes as many songs as he needs to record; this time, some quality control might have required writing a few more. --Don McLeese

1 out of 5 stars Another fiasco.......2007-07-23

I gave it one star because it is just not possible to give less.
Toby Keith goes from bad to worse. I cannot buy his music even if they paid me to do such.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2007-04-16

I have generally really enjoyed Toby Keith in the past. I respect his integrity and songwriting skills, but this album diappoints. At it's best, it offers little in the way of new sounds, new ideas, or new flavors. At it's worst, it's dim and, in some cases offensive. None of these songs excited me (like "Beer For My Horses" or "Let's Talk About Me" or wooed me like "I Love This Bar" or "Wish I Didn't Know".

Songs like "Running Block" are downright offensive (and no, I'm not overweight, I just have compassion).

5 out of 5 stars obviously great! .......2007-02-06

music is great or we wouldnt have bought the cd in the first place :)

5 out of 5 stars Machismo Music.......2007-01-28

Toby Keith is cheeky without being arrogant. I like his voice. His music has a baseline brass knuckle truth. I have a friend that I think of every time I hear the the song "I love this bar" Toby Keith has no pretentions to "air"

5 out of 5 stars Back To Their Roots..........2007-03-30

While not completely departing from the rockabilly sound of their previous three albums, "White Light, White Heat, White Trash" is definitely a return to the band's punk rock roots. This album is the closest Social Distortion has come to releasing another pure "punk rock" album since "mommy's little monster". Lyrically, this album has a much more angry and bleak outlook on the world than what was presented in the previous three albums.

This album, along with "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell" stand as the best two complete albums that Social Distortion have ever released. It is another album that is easy to listen to in its entirety. In my opinion, these are the real highlights of the album...

-Dear Lover
-Don't Drag Me Down
-I Was Wrong
-Through These Eyes
-When The Angels Sing
-Down Here With The Rest of Us
-Under My Thumb

5 out of 5 stars SD AT ITS BEST.......2007-01-03

"White light..." is undoubtlessly the climax of Mike Ness' search for a definitive punk-hearted rock style. Songs like "I was wrong" or "Don't drag me down" deserve to be in every anthology of the finest punk ever played by an american band.

5 out of 5 stars Hard Driving Rage !.......2006-06-09

Probably my favorite album from this incredible band. Heck, all of their albums are great, I cannot really think of another band with the consistency as Mike Ness and the boys. What I like so much about this album is how hard it is. This album kicks off with a rockin' # and just keeps driving the pace and sound up up up. Mike Ness, you freaking rule!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Record Ever Made.......2006-05-03

I've been listening to rock and roll and other popular music since 1963. My tastes run from Hank Williams to Chevelle, from Donovan to Type O Negative, from Dinah Washington to Catherine Wheel. I rarely use words like "the best" because "the best" tends to vary over time and with moods - there is just so much good music out there. This recording, however, over the 10 years since its release, has proven itself over time. Ness and Co. set out with a mission: to make a great "punk rock" album. I don't think they did that at all, this isn't even "punk rock" to my ears. What they made is simply The Greatest Record of All Time. It is flawless in its writing, its performance, and its production. I will be forever grateful to them for making it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely gorgeous agony.......2005-10-10

Being a long time Social D fan, I greatly anticipated the release of White Heat... Mike Ness and co. had gone through some line-up changes and in the process acquired "Master of the Skins" and former Danzig drummer, Chuck Biscuits. This new arrival, while he had never been a core writer or personality in any previous band, made his presence more than known on this cd. The tempo and drumming, put to sadistic use in this collection perfectly matched the atmosphere that Ness created when he wrote the songs. Some may say that this cd is a bit depressing. Those people would be right but Ness's pain, loneliness, and frustration is beautiful to listen to unfold. In point of fact, this cd reminded me of why I love music so much. It allows you to explore the darker side of yourself and not to be afraid of it. Kind of scary, huh?
When your finished listening to the entire cd from start to finish, and I advise you to do so, you will feel spent, exhilerated and humming some of the songs all day. Magnificent, heartfelt writing coupled with virtuoso musicianship and recording standards of the highest caliber should result in this cd becoming a pillar in everyone's music library. Most highly recomended!!

4 out of 5 stars The Whole Blue Eyed Gospel Soul Thing Rolled Into One.........2007-02-13

White Trash were an interesting band of jazz, soul, funk, gospel all rolled into one large cacophony of sound reminiscent of what was going down at the time with the likes of Delaney @ Bonnie, Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen, Blood Sweat @ Tears, The Flock..The maniacal screaming albino keyboard rocker Edgar, whose blues man brother Johnny Winter joins him on a track released this 2 LP LIVE set that is all shucking and jive, good musicians with the likes of Rick Derringer and Jerry LaCroix, an audible horn section ..all pretty unique stuff where musicianship was all very important.
Edgar Winter was a trip.

4 out of 5 stars Great album -- really captures the concert feeling.......2007-02-03

This one is about having a great time with a BIG band, soulful grooves, horns, and a lot (maybe too much) of screaming. It's a little sloppy at times, "Tobacco Road" goes on a little too long, but you also get Jon Smith's wonderful sax work, some of Rick Derringer's best playing, and an overall feeling of energy and interaction and love of the music that puts a smile on your face. I had the good luck to see this band in the early 70s at the Academy of Music, and while I kept waiting for Johnny to show up (he didn't), it was still one of the most exciting (and loud) nights of live music I've ever experienced. "Save the Planet" is like going to church.

5 out of 5 stars UNDERRATED.......2007-01-09

AS MY TITLE INDICATES >>THIS WAS ONE OF THE HARDEST WORKING LIVE BANDS ON ANY TOUR. THIS GROUP IN MY OPINION WAS VASTLY UNDER-RATED. 'ROCK AND SOUL' LIKE YOU NEVER HEARD IT>THESE GUYS WERE SO GOOD ,THEY SHUOLD HAVE BEEN BLACK. yES A TERRIBLE RECORDING , NO DOUBT, BUT YOU GET THE 'LIVE FEELING FROM THIS RECORDING, AND THE ARRANGEMENTS IN REGARDS TO ALL THE MUSIC >>>>IS FANTASTIC.i OWN THE ALBUM, AND THE CD >? I LOVE THE HORRIBLE RECORDING ON THE ALBUM>>THE CD HAS LOST ALL THE FAT IN THE BOTTOM END .

5 out of 5 stars Peels the paint off the walls.......2006-02-11

I first heard this album in the early 70's in high school. Now I've turned my own kids (21, 20, 16, 16 and 13) onto it. They can't believe that you could once go into a club and hear bands like this LIVE. They only listen to classic stuff I give them now; there's nothing on the radio that remotely comes close to the gut-wrenching energy of great musicians playing live at full throttle. If you only know Edgar Winter from his "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride" days, you've got an eye-opening experience ahead of you. Listen in particular to Edgar's 18 second full-throated stratospheric sustained vocal in Tobacco Road. You could refinish furniture by putting it in front of the speakers with this song turned up. An absolute MUST HAVE CD.

5 out of 5 stars "People keep askin' me - where's your brother?".......2005-11-23

It's truly a shame that more people aren't familiar with this album. Simply put, Roadwork has got to be one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. From the gospel-tinged "Save the Planet" to the raw blues of "Tobacco Road," this recording just grabs you right from the first song and just won't let go. In addition to being an amazing keyboard and saxophone player, Edgar Winter is an incredible vocalist. When you add the incendiary Jerry La Croix, an equally amazing vocalist, the result sends chills down your spine. For you guys who are air guitar specialists, I recommend that you check out Rick Derringer's rendition of Chuck Berry's "Back in the USA." Derringer proves beyond a doubt why he's a legend on the six string. But it's not enough just to have Rick Derringer on the scene. Edgar introduces his brother Johnny for a fiery version of "Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo."There are so many highlights on this recording that it's hard to select just one as a favorite. Certainly one of the highlights is "Tobacco Road." After you've heard Edgar Winter's White Trash work out on this cut, it's just like there's nothing more to be said. If I had to pick just one cut to represent the genius and passion of this album, I'd go with the old rhythm and blues classic "Turn on Your Love Light." Listen as the horns blast out that classic riff and then let Jerry La Croix take you on a trip where the soul of man never dies. This is rock n roll with a vengeance! Or, as Jerry exhorts the crowd at the Apollo: "If you feel like lettin' it out, hot damn, let it out."

5 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2007-03-27

love this CD. Everlast shows his true styles with fresh beats and lyrics....love this guy...hope he keeps them comin....

4 out of 5 stars greatest white rapper???.......2007-02-18

I'm confused, this is more like country. the guy's got a nice voice but he's not a rapper. which in his case, is probably a good thing. I think he has some nice songs worth listening to! very unique style, just definitely not rap. nothing like it.

5 out of 5 stars The Great White Rapper.......2006-11-10

I have been listening to rap for along time. Since 1978 to be exact. I have seen great rappers come and go, especially white ones. I remember seeing Everlast for the first time in the late 80's when he was down with Ice T's Syndicate. Unfortunately, due to time perception - most are saying that Eminem is the best white rapper by far. I think these critics have not went back and listened to Everlasts lyrics and style. The White Boys, Snow, V Ice, Beasties, on and on - simply do not have the depth, strength and intellect that Everlast contains. He is by far, the greatest white recorded rapper up to this point in history. He is the bar to which almost all should be measured.

5 out of 5 stars Rock/R&B/Rap/Soul/Blues -- All in one?.......2006-06-09

This guy is very talented. I really like how he integrates soul with blues with rap, etc. I initially bought the album for White Trash and Blinded, but quickly found out the rest of the songs are also extremely good. One major criteria that I have for a really good album is how often it goes in the CD player. This one goes in a lot! I didn't even think that I would ever listen to Rap.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent.......2006-06-05

I had only heard the popular Everlast song. I found White Trash Beautiful by accident. It is now in my top 10 all time favorite CD.

4 out of 5 stars Return to the limelight - 3.5 stars.......2007-03-17

Old skool heavy rock fans hate this album. They hate the whiff of sellout, the guest appearances like the co-writing with Desmond Child, Richie Sambora and Jon Bon Jovi. They hate the fact that people as varies as Stiv Bator, Steve Lukather and a whole heap of Aerosmith and girlie faves like Kane Roberts and Kip Winger were also features. Particularly in relation to the latter two mentioned, they take umbrage that such third tier types were in posession of bigger profiles than their teenage shock rock idol circa '89.

The simple fact is that this sort of collaboration is exactly what Alice needed to bring him up to date. To bring his legacy to a new generation and the plain truth is that since this album the Coop has never fallen off the radar as badly as he had with dross such as Special Forces and Da.

The worst things that could be said of this album are that it's a cop out with all the extra writers and that it's a shameless sellout. But even a sellout is better than what we'd put up with prior to this release.

But just cos I'm not someone who was 18 when Billion Dollar Babies came out and therefore feel obliged to hate everything that came after doesn't mean I find this album faultess. Far from it. So, IMHO;

- Poison is a great song and a great way to start an album. Other highlights would be Bed of Nails in a cheesy sort of way and Spark in the Dark and House of Fire scoot along quickly enough that you almost don't notice the shaky musical premises their built on. Nicely flowing chorus' on tunes such as This Maniacs in Love With You and the visceral vocal performance of Why Trust You (a little out of place on a disc so smoothly produced by Desmond Child) lift these tunes to at least bog standard level.

- However despite Alice trying to talk it up at the time, Only My Heart Talkin' was never gonna have much impact on the charts. And Hell is Living Without You is filler while I'm Your Gun - well they probably figured that if they tacked it onto the end of the album nobody would notice it. And given the calibre of the songwriters here it's pretty scary they couldn't come upwith at least ten decent tunes.

- Alice Cooper still has something about him on pretty much any release he touches. And his brand of shock rock that at times delved into art rock is here fairly streamlined into mainstream late 80's hard rock. The riffs are clean, the production nice and when it does work it works pretty darn well. For heavens sake even Barry Manilow loving housewives like my mother liked Poison the thing was so darn catchy!

This slice of corporate rock ain't the best Coop product by a fair margin. But it gave him back the commercial impetus to relaunch his career and he subsequently grabbed that chance with both hands so regardless of what the purists may think this is an important album in the mans cataluge, but not always for the music itself.

1 out of 5 stars HIs Worst.......2006-12-15

This was Alice's big comeback album. The single "Poison" got him back on top 40 radio for the first time in years, and the album was a huge success. Cooper was back to playing big arenas in front of sold out crowds. But......I think the album stinks. The music is cliche ridden hair metal and most of the lyrics are just plain stupid. Compared to most of the Coop's other work this dreck just does not hold up.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Coop's best work.......2006-12-15

Good, but not great.

If you prefer your music heavy, get "Brutal Planet" or "Last Temptation" instead. Hell, get both - they rock.

If you prefer your music quirky and less harsh, go with "From the Inside".

If you prefer old school Coop - well then, you probably already know what you like, and don't need my silly advice anyway, do you?

3 out of 5 stars A Decent Comeback with great moments........2006-07-26

This album was mainly Alice Coopers comeback album that got him back on the popular seen. I personally think the album itself does not have the Alice Cooper twist in it, but it has some of my favorite songs in it. POISON - the song that reached # 7 in the u.s. is a great song, Spark in the Dark is another good one, and Bed Of Nails is just amazing. The rest of the album is okay and occaisonally good. But it just has to many guests in it, that have taken over the album i'd recomend the album to people to listen to, but just know it's not really the Alice we love.

5 out of 5 stars If there were more stars to rate this album I'd use them!.......2006-07-11

Trash is Alice Cooper at his heavy metal best! If there were more stars to use to rate this album I'd use them! This album rocks! From the hard core hair metal sound of the music to the poetic genius in his lyrics, there is not a bad song on it, (well, maybe one). His all star line up of hair band rockers such as Jon Bon Jovi, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and Tom Hamilton, to name a few, are a lot of fun to hear and blend well with Alice Cooper and his band. I think I read that this is the number one selling A.C. album of all time and "Poison" is still one of my favorite heavy metal songs. Buy this album!

The late 60s / early 70s was a time of remarkable innovation in pop music. (The Beatles were at their zenith; Woodstock had just happened; artists were experimenting.) One of the directions was "rock music with a horn section." (Think "Blood, Sweat and Tears," "Traffic," and "Chicago Transit Authority" ... before they shortened their name and started pumping out the smarmy FM-radio ballads.)

Edgar Winter's "White Trash" band emerged from that era, and this debut recording stands up very nicely, 35 years later. Some of it is rockin' soul music, some of it is soulful rock music; all of it features a fat horn section and the vocal stylings of Jerry LaCroix and the ultra-white Edgar Winter. (He and his previously-famous brother, blues guitar-slinger Johnny, are both albino dudes, with white skin and pink eyes. But you'd never guess it by listening to 'em... if I can say so without offending anybody, their music is quite a few shades darker!)

Edgar tells the story of his rise to fame in the autobiographical song "Keep Playin' that Rock 'n' Roll." (a line of which is the title to this review.) It's a good 'un. Other personal favorites: "Save the Planet" (Edgar was WAY before Algore's time, and is more convincing to boot), the blues-soaked "I've Got News for You," and "Good Morning Music."

5 out of 5 stars Blazing rock n' roll.......2006-01-20

I first heard and saw Edgar Winter as a teenager in 1972 quite by accident. I purchased tickets to see Humble Pie at Atlanta's old Municipal Auditorium, White Trash was the opening act, and guess who blew who off the stage? I was mesmerised by the sound and energy of Edgar & White Trash, so was my girlfriend (boy did I get lucky that night!). I soon purchased this album and 'Roadwork' and nearly wore the grooves off both. Keep Playin' That Rock N' Roll is in my opinion the quintesentail rock party tune, can't quit playing air guitar to it. What a great first release by an artist who could not survive the disco blitz of the late 70's. Every rock/blues fan should own 'White Trash'.

5 out of 5 stars First Rocker for Edgar a Gem.......2005-10-12

I first heard Edgar Winter's White Trash as the opening act for Alice Cooper (it was my girlfriend's idea) in a packed arena in the spring of 1972. I was amazed; they stole the show, and I went right out the next day and bought this album.

A better live act than a studio one ("Roadwork", their only other release before Edgar turned pop-disco, is an incredible album), the debut album is nevertheless well-done, and a number of the songs reflect the energy of the group's live performances, especially the gospel numbers "Fly Away" and "Save the Planet", and the Ray Charles cover "I've Got News for You."

You can almost feel the sweat, sawdust, and smoke eminating from the pores of your speakers, and Jerry LaCroix's gravelly voice both blends with and counterpoints Edgar's high-pitched wails as the horns drive the engine.

They reunited for an album years later called "Edgar Winter's White Trash Revisited." A studio effort, it didn't have the quality of tunes or the drive of the original, but it still had those great voices. I'd love to see it on disc one day, as well as the live album Edgar did with his brother Johnny that featured one of the best rock and roll fifties-sixties medleys I've ever heard.

Edgar's debut album, "The Edgar Winter Experience", was a great 'small' album featuring Edgar singing a dozen of his own original jazz tunes, a totally different style. Love to hear that one again, too.

Till then, I'll groove on "White Trash" and "Roadwork."

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Gem.......2005-04-30

On this brass-heavy hard rock album, there is not one track that is not wonderful. From the foot-stomping "Give It Everything You Got" to the burlesque beat of "I've Got News for You", this is a fine, fine album. Standout tracks include "Dying to Live", "Fly Away" and "You Were My Life", although ALL tracks resonate.

If you like Chicago, Blood, Sweat and Tears or Springsteen and the E-Street band, you gotta get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Edgar and the Boys Cook on this one!.......2005-03-18

How does one describe Edgar and White Trash? You have to hear 'em to to believe 'em. The album is one of those few great truly creative moments in American music. I first heard this ablbum when it originally came out in 1971, and I've never forgotten any of these songs. Get it and enjoy!

By the way, if you ever get a chance to Johnny Winter's "Jazz Blues Fusion" (1962?) that also is a truly fabulous experience.

Who are these Winter brothers???!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Shine.......2007-02-27

Sonic Youth is not a Robot. They are here to make you react to the now. This world is spinning at a certain frequency and this album whirls in your mind like a celling fan on a hot summer night. This is one of the best Headphone recordings I own out of my 1000+ collection. Thurston and Kim's songs dominate this album for me much like Siter. If you like Sonic Youth this album Is A must have along with 1991 The Year Punk Broke Through. Sweet Shine Is my Favorite Song. Thats right period.

5 out of 5 stars Great, top to bottom.......2006-09-13

This was the first Sonic Youth album I listened to, so for a long time I figured my opinion on it didn't count. Had to bow to the opinions of those long time fans, you know, who didn't seem to care for this one. I've since heard several other SY albums over the years, and I always gave them a great chance -- because, damn, this is the group that made Experimental Jet Set, etc. And I think I'm ready to commit now -- this album was their best, at least of the ones I know. It was one of the greatest albums of the 90's. There isn't a bad song on it, and the best ones are, well, transcendent. I can't rate this album any higher.

5 out of 5 stars Their best?.......2006-05-29

Sonic Youth was always good, this may be their best, and one of 4 great 90's albums, along with "CIA Drug Fest" by Old Skull, "Undisputed Attitude" by Slayer, and "We Are They Who Ache With Amorous Love" by Half Japanese. "Winners Blues" is acoustic, a crazy move for these noisemakers, and then we get what we really came for, noisy improv-ish songs that are fantastic, exciting, and occasionally intelligible! Some of the early SY stuff is a little overrated, but this, "EVOL", "Goo", and "Confusion is Sex" are sure to please fans of noisy music.

4 out of 5 stars Sexy.......2006-04-24

it's amazing how everytime SY can make an album that is completely different than the previous one. Again so now, after the 'commercial' -Dirty- (which was an awesome record) comes this one.

Starting with the previous unexplored world of acoustic lo-fi, which was relatively big in the indie scene back then, in 'Winner Blues' comes an instant SY classic, 'Bull in Heather'.
For some reason this song is perfect for around 5 am in the morning, it just has that scary feeling, but in a seductive, sexy way that borders on the pornographic when Kim is droning up numbers. Kim's songs are very good on this album by the way, 'Doctor's Orders' having a great chorus you can sing along, and it could almost be a Nirvana chorus.

There are some swing-and-misses, it could have done without 'Androgynous Mind'

In line with 'Dirty', there are some great Thurston Moore songs, if you can call them that. While never reaching the level of 'Sugar Kane' or 'Chapell Hill' songs like 'Waist' and 'Screaming Skull' (with a great riff as a break) have their moments.

It may not be the best SY album, but it's still very good and worth listening to over and over

4 out of 5 stars Good record.......2006-03-06

This is one of sonic youth's best work I think,If you are new to sonic youth this isn't a bad start.

A beautifully full, sweetly melodic pop album that is so lush with sound, it takes a few listens to realize that, remarkably, all the songs are performed with only acoustic instruments. Rhythm guitars provide a thick mattress on which the rest of the elements gently bounce. No single note rises above another. The well-harmonized vocals blend perfectly with the rest of the instruments. The lyrics are fanciful plays on words, but they're sung so earnestly that one still finds relevance and meaning in them. "Obscurity Knocks" and "Only Tongue Can Tell" are the best examples of cleverly skewed lyrics supported by elegant melodies. Overall, Cakeis a wonderful acoustic accomplishment. --Beth Bessmer

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-04-24

I've been listening to this album for fifteen years, and I can't believe I'm actually going to say this, but...it just gets better and better. I never get tired of CAKE. The lyrics and melodies are unmatched. Each song is a gem of unrivaled cleverness and tenderness. What a stunning confluence of sweetness and wit. It gives me something on every listen.

So many albums feel haphazardly slapped together--this one doesn't. It is finely crafted. And so many albums feel like they are about 4 songs too many--this one isn't. CAKE actually feels like it could keep right on going on its own.

I will spare you the details so you can discover them yourself. So I'm gonna keep it short and simple: I don't know what I'd do without this one album in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great brit-pop with clever lyrics.......2005-04-21

I'm writing this review 15 years late, but I had to comment on it. CAKE was one of my favorite CDs of the 90's, and I still can't get enough of it today.

The lyrics make this album really stand out. The play on words is so clever ("Just fair-weather words from four-letter friends" or "You made me feel I was born again, it's a shame I never grew up again") each song has at least one great line.

"Obscurity Knocks" is my favorite off the CD. A perfect pop song. Since the CD came out when I was turning 21, the song became an anthem for me (not really, but that sounds good).

Other outstanding tracks include "Only Tongue Can Tell", "You Made Me Feel", "Funny", "Thrupenny Tears", and "January's Little Joke".

I finally was able to catch TCS in concert, twice in the past year and a half in Austin at SXSW. Although I only got see a small portion of their regular show, they were very solid. I noticed that they didn't play anything off this CD, which was frustrating. If you have the chance to see them live, do so.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2004-08-19

Another one of those CDs that sounds as good today as it did 14 years ago.

TCS are probably a bit arty for many, but they have a very devoted following. They are very talented musicians, I remember way back when during a live show, they would occasionally swap instruments between songs. Very cool.

That being said, "Cake" still makes it to my main playlist. Francis Reader's vocals twist in and out of the numerous plays on words. John Douglas is a superb guitarist.

The standout tracks are the singles "Only Tongue Can Tell" and my favorite "Obscurity Knocks". "Circling the Circumference", another single, is good too but not as punchy as the other two. A great slow track is "Even the Odd".

A sublime CD overall, prolly rated 4.5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars A cake that's sparkling with colors.......2004-06-09

'Cake' by The Trash Can Sinatras falls somewhere in between The Sundays' dreamy guitar textures and the playful romps of The Housemartins. Throw in Johnny Marr's fluid jangles and minstrel-like vocals of Roddy Frame, and you have a debut combines melodic/acoustic-derived Britpop with The Smiths. Joyous and sparkling. Not a bad combination. Let The Trash Can Sinatras take you on a leisurely stroll where the sun is shining, the grass is green, and everything is alright.

4 out of 5 stars Far from "Trash"........2004-01-20

I don't know a single other person who knows this band, but I sure am glad I do. This is one of those special albums that came out at a great time in alt-pop. They sound alot like other bands from that era (1990), but also add a very smooth and melodic touch to their music, almost shoegazeish, but not. The best tracks in my opinion are "Obscurity Knocks", "Even The Odd", "Funny", and "Only Tongue Can Tell". All wonderful. If you like bands such as "The Ocean Blue" or "Mighty Lemon Drops", you should like this album. It might be the best "Cake" you ever had.

4 out of 5 stars Good Up-tempo punk style recording.......2007-01-12

This is a solid and fast-paced collection. "The Bag" and "She's Gone" are best on the cd. I think "Punk in Drublic" cd is a better one to have, but this is one I listen to every few weeks and enjoy. NOFX seems to have their own sound and "White Trash..." seems to represent this in every cut.

5 out of 5 stars soul doubt.......2006-12-15

and that's exactly what they did. too bad because they used to be good, and this album is one of the best nofx cd's out there. it has a lot of classics on it: stickin in my eye, bob, liza and louise, johnny appleseed. and also some really great songs that you might not have heard: you're bleeding, she's gone, and soul doubt. this is really the last album nofx recorded before they started turning pretty poppy. punk in drublic and so long are both still good, but don't buy anything after that. pump up the valuum might be worth having but definently not worth buying, so get it from a friend or something. but if you want to hear classic old-school nofx, then get this album. and if you like it, then get s&m airlines and be really rocked the [...] out.

5 out of 5 stars Probably their best album.......2006-06-29

This was the frist NOFX album I heard and I still love it just as much today. The songs are funny, clever upbeat, exciting and really showcase NOFX's talent. If you like punk or pop-punk than this is definately a must have album for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars White Trash, Two Heebs, and a Bean- NOFX.......2005-11-11

Okay, let me start by saying that I am a huge NOFX fan, and I have been for my entire life. I have listened to all of their albums, and I must say, this is one of their best ones (the only one I would have to say I like better is "S/M Airlines"). This a perfect combination if punk, ska, and a good time. It's great, it's funny, and its just all around awesome. Useless Fact: This was the first full length NOFX album El Hefe appeared on (he was on the EP "The Longest Line" before this). Before i get to the song-by-song review of this great punk rock treasure, I need to get some of this out of the way. Some retard posted something like "this isn't punk, get simple plan and good charlotte". shows how much you know kiddie (yeah, i'm older, i just don't have an amazon username). this is REAL punk! good charlotte are sellouts, poseurs, and they never WERE punk! they're music represents NOTHING that punk is, and it doesnt have the punk FEEL or SOUND. yeah. nofx are pretty big, but they are NOT sellouts, OR posuers, and yeah, there are more underground hardcore-er bands that might be considered "more punk", but this is real f*****g punk s**t. Anyway, here is the song-by-song review of this great piece of punk.

1. Soul Doubt: the first song on the album, and what a first song! this song (like every single one on the album) is a great song! awesome instruments (you really come to EXPECT that from nofx), and fat mike's catchy, great lyrics ("i stick my head out of the window when it's closed, instead of air i get glass stuck into my head"). 5/5

2. Stickin In My Eye: ah, stickin' in my eye. great song, all the way through. AMAZING basswork (fat mike truly has to be one of, if not, THE greatest bassist ever!), great guitar, great lyrics, everything. this one had a video that showed them playing at Gilman's. Cool song! 5/5

3. Bob: the other song with a video! this one (as talked about in the song) shows a drunk with suspenders riding a scooter! This song is awesome. Many of the elements that have today defined NOFX. good bass, good guitar, good drums, and el hefe's signature ska-trumpet playing! Great song! 5/5

4. You're Bleeding: this is another great one (i think we have established about every song on here is). nothing TOO special, but still a great song, that sounds cool, and deserves 5 stars! 5/5

5. Straight Edge: lemme clear the air. i read a couple reviews that said "straight edge is so stupid" and stuff like that. THIS SONG IS A F****** JOKE!!!!! yeah, alot of these kiddies don't know that, becuase they don't know minor threat. straight edge, in its original, 45 second, fast, hardcore form, was the first single released by a, well, straight edge hardcore band from DC named Minor Threat in the early 80's. they sing a joke version of it because they like drugs, sex, and booze!!!(being straight edge is no drugs, no booze, no casual sex) Anyway, a good funny el hefe novelty. cool bluesy guitar, cool trumpet, hilarious! 5/5

6. Liza And Louise this is another one showing the wit and range of fat mike's lyrics. to lay it out: this song is about lesbian sex. yeah, snicker all you want kiddies, we're not all homophobes. yeah, that don't mean i am one, but i have no problem with them, and fat mike just seems to have a liking for lesbians (see also "louise" on the louise and liza single, and the not as good remake on the 2000 lp pump up the valuum) 5/5

7. The Bag: a pretty cool one. not as great as others, but still cool. 5/5

8. Please Play This Song On The Radio: okay, kiddies, do you know what to say when i count to three? 1-2-3: "WHAT AN A**HOLE!!!!!!" greatest yell/chant ever! this song rules! its about how corporate rock and the radio stations cant play anything that has swears in it or, to quote the song, "the fcc's gonna take a **** right on your head!" great message, great lyrics, great ******* song! "almost every- line is sung in- time, and almost every verse ends in a rim" 5/5

9. Warm: the only one i skip when i listen to this cd, not that great, but not at all bad. 4/5

10. I Wanna Be Your Baby: this is a great, catchy, harder one! cool guitar, great vox! 5/5

11. Johnny Appleseed: this is another funny hefe novelty, about, well, johnny appleseed! funny! 5/5

12. She's Gone: okay, here it is! she's gone! this is my favorite song on the album, and one of my favorite nofx songs of all time! this is like the climax of the album! it rules! great bass, great guitar, great drums, great vox, great lyrics, great everything! "she's gone, and its NOT gonna be alright! not for me, she's gone, and its NOT gonna be alright! not for me, she's gone"
10/5

13. Buggley Eyes: ahh, alls well that ends well. heres where the climax falls and you get a nice funny, short, soft little ditty. another one of nofx's classic funnies. "did you ever go to sleep with bo derek, and wake up with bo didley? you got so loaded, you thought that she, was the most beautiful girl you ever did see" self explanitory. 5/5

so, there you have it! one of the greatest works of our time! deffinately buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2005-08-15

This album is a true classic of what punk was in the early 90's.

The first NOFX LP featuring the talent of el Hefe (Hefe joined during the Longest Line EP). Hefe's musicianship is displayed throughout the album with some amazing guitar work, trumpet, backing and lead vocals. Leading to what will be defined as NOFX'S characteristical sound, that has been imitated countless times but never equaled.

Along with Bad Religion and the Descendents, NOFX can be credited for being the finest representatives of melodic punk. This album is a landmark album that influenced a whole generation of bands. (Not just Fat Records bands). If you are a NOFX fan you already own this. If you are just getting into punk get it! Furthermore if you are between the ages of 13-17 it is of extreme importance that you buy this before you are brainwashed by mtv's current definition of "punk".

Standout tracks:
Soul Doubt
Stickin in my eye
Bob (a classic)
Straight Edge (amazing jazzy cover of a hardcore classic by Minor Threat, with a great solo by el Hefe)
Liza & Louise
... Hell! all tracks are awesome

Cheers.

Candye does it again. A nice mix of originals and a few covers, this great voice always manages to surround herself with competent players and make a great CD. Check it out, even better...see her when she tours and hear that it is no studio trick. I hope this survivor keeps singing for a long long time. Favorite tracks on this one...
