5 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2007-06-08

I rate 5 star for the music, 5 star for sound quality and 4 star for surround mix. I'm not disappoint when listen to this album, each track on this album is very well selected.

I enjoy even when I listen with red book player. The CD layer also very good when compare to SACD layer.

One of my favorite album.

5 out of 5 stars very good sound.......2007-01-03

I am very pleasure when I heard this SACD, all the sound is clear and the multichannel works like a different instruments places around my room.

4 out of 5 stars voices in the room .......2006-03-14

Nice jazz sampler should appeal to most tastes in mainstream jazz since it's not too funky or free-style. What's the real kicker here is the SACD quality. Certainly not what I would call a great test cd but still good for amazing friends with the detailed sonics and tight bass lines and realistic voices in the room effects.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent.......2006-01-02

very good compilation.
sound quality on SACD is first rate.

4 out of 5 stars Good jazz SACD sampler.......2005-06-06

I'm not a jazz fan, but purchased this SACD for testing the performance of my new SACD & DVDA player. I own a lot of DVD audio discs, but this one is my first SACD.
Sound is good and well separated on the analogue 6 channel output designed for playing such a disc. But the music taste of the disc producer is strictly a jazz taste which doesn't meet that of a lot of music listeners. Beija-Flor, Come with me and Watermelon man are fantastic.
As a conclusion, it's a reliable SACD sampler but not comparable to DVDA which has almost the same sound fidelity, and include further videos, lyrics, photos and interviews.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE ULTRA-LOUNGE!.......2007-05-13

Love this kind of music - can't get enough - have most all of the CDs. Excellent New Jersey-based company with excellent foresight and retro-understanding for the best party and jazz combos. Excellent choice for any kind of day or evening, party or relaxation time.

5 out of 5 stars Great for parties, easy to listen to.......2007-04-04

The Ultra-Lounge series is overall is GREAT. I bought a couple of these CD's at first to try out, and also because I wanted to have some nice background music for a dinner party. I immediately purchased 3 more after that, and I'm really pleased. The songs are cool and set a really nice atmosphere if you're having guests over.

5 out of 5 stars I love the Ultra-Lounge series........2006-12-10

The sound quality of the Ultra-Lounge series is excellent, even though the songs were recorded mostly in the 50's and 60's. Capitol Records packs each CD with carefully chosen tracks consistent with the theme of the particular volume in the series. Many of the selections that appear here aren't available elsewhere, either because the original album on which the song appeared is out of print, or because the song was issued as a single and never collected in an album. A few 'previously unreleased' tracks also appear here. This series is a wonderful introduction to the music of a by-gone era, and each album includes detailed notes on each track (artist, writers, date recorded, how released, etc.). I heartily recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this type of music.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better ultra lounge CD's .......2006-06-04

this is a fun CD to listen to. Not a lot of "serious" salsa here, quite a few novelty tunes, but they get your feet moving and your toes tapping. You will enjoy listening to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Mambo your way to fun.......2004-05-01

Imagine yourself on a wrap-around porch of some grand house basking in the warmth of a summer sunset. Maybe you are simply lounging on a beach with a cocktail in one hand and the hand of the one you love in the other. Perhaps you are in a tuxedo or flaming red cocktail dress and having a wonderfully dry martini (shaken, not stirred) before you get ready to head to the dance floor.

If any of those situations are real or just party of your dreams, this CD from Ultra-Lounge is for you. Rare is the day when you will find some neon decorated, pseudo-tropical paradise lounge or restaurant where drinks were served in coconut cups with little umbrellas. But you can hear the music from them. This CD has the Mambo interwoven in each and every song. You can literally see the band in their white jackets and the lavish costumes on the showgirls as they entertain you.

Yma Sumac drops in for a two song trip down memory lane. You can hear the passion and the fun in her voice. Mariah Carey eat your heart out. The organ tracks are quite amusing, and the Glow Worm Cha Cha will change your life. (Well, not really, but it shouldn't be missed.)

If you ever wanted to visit the famed Coconut Grove or be part of the action with Ricky Ricardo's Band, you need to order this CD. Even if you find that the music is just a throw-back to the days when people in limos were movie stars (and not two girls from Encino using daddy's credit card), it is still a hilarious and joyour romp threw yesteryear.

Fix a highball, add a slice of pineapple, play this CD, and enjoy life.

4 out of 5 stars Virile fusions.......1999-06-17

Before Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley songwriters picked up on Cuban and Puerto Rican styles in the pursuit of disposable novelty hits, these styles were being honestly fused with the emerging modern jazz of bebop and cool. Of course, this took place in New York City, as Machito and other emigres were welcomed by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, and by dancers who no doubt wanted something hotter than intellectual bebop. The result is in these raw recordings, which are compositionally astute, blending Ellingtonian orchestrations with bop heads and the clave, while retaining and even magnifying the rhythmic intensity. Such a virile fusion of Latin and New York styles would not be heard again until the Nu Yorican movement of the 1970s.

Amazon.com essential recording

Just as anybody even halfway serious about learning blues must get The Complete Robert Johnson, this set is completely essential to anyone with even a passing interest in Latin music as it has evolved since World War II. But this is not a package of dry scholarship. Puente has always been a master of the groove, whether it be mambos, boleros, salsa, or boogaloo. From early selections such as "Mambo Inn" to his recent works on Concord, Puente has always been more than just a showman. The original "Oye como va," included here, simmers at least as hard as Santana's amped excursion. This is a truly wonderful package, pointing up to the strongest points in a career always short on weak points. --Skip Heller

5 out of 5 stars Great Music by The King Of The Mambo.......2001-01-09

This was the first and only Box Set that I have of "El Rey" and I must say that this boxed set is the greatest collection of music ever recorded it has some great songs including Que Te Pedi, Celia & Tito, Donde Estabas Tu, and Nina Y Senora to name a few. The reason I like this boxed set is because it gave you 50 of the greatest tracks ever made plus it is a great starter for people just getting into latin music or Tito Puente in general. So if you are in the mood to dance then this 3 cd set is for you.

5 out of 5 stars More than I expected.......2000-07-11

I bought this box set with apprehension, not sure what to expect, but equally aware that this is essential listening for Jazz lovers and Latin music enthusiasts alike. I can honestly say that I got much more than I expected. The diversity and complexity of the tracks included is impressive, especially because I'm a member of a musical generation brought up on one sound, one hit wonders. I definitely would recommend this set to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Tito's gonna be dead, and you'll be telling people..........2000-01-13

i've been listening to him for years!

I must admit that line from Stripes and the authorship credit on Abraxas induced me to buy this.

I love it! Everyone should have some Tito... You cannot be still while listening to this.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Percussionists in the World.......1999-10-02

Bill Cosby approved! A great boxed set by a great percussionist! Very few musicians have achieved what Mr. Puente has done. Many of contemporary artists are in the music business just to make money, but Mr. Puente does it for the pure joy and excitement of music... oh yeah, the money's good too!

3 out of 5 stars Really a 5-star...however..........2006-10-16

Do you dig the Vice Prez Paul Quinichette? Man, to hear him trade choruses with Al Cohn--with the Herd and Tito Puente's latin percussion behind them--let me tell you something: GET THIS CD. And another little bonus--besides the all-star band and the great charts throughout, and the gorgeous acoustic guitar guesting with the Herd--is hearing upstate tenorman Joe Romano here with the Herd.

OK, so why just 3 stars? Well, unfortunately a lot of the tracks were mastered from surviving vinyl (you can hear the records' surface noise, and you can hear the crappy process used to try to hide it, albeit only during quiet passages, of which there aren't many, being that this is a powerfully swingin' and hard blowin' HERD). The notes boast that this session is restored to it original lustre for this CD. Nope. Not when you can hear the needle grinding on the record's surface during the guitar-big band features, sadly.

So, yes, the Everest LP reissues of this stuff through the years were subjected to fake stereo and the shoddy like, which, as I say, remains on many of these CD tracks, as they were recorded from surviving vinyl (presumably the original master tapes no longer exist--and/or Everest had permanently stereo-reverberized the masters...which is probably why the meticulous Japanese companies won't touch these). And that's why this CD, aside from having the original cover art and Hentoff notes, is not all that improved over the Everests, although the overall fidelity and Rick Pantoja's mastering certainly earn 5 stars, especially when you consider there were no master tapes to work with. Mike DiMartino in Rochester, NY, USA.

5 out of 5 stars It's About Time.......2005-02-10

Anybody who owned this original LP and the subsequent shoddy transfers on CD (if you can find them still) can now rest at ease. Finally someone has taken the original LP and released it exactly as it was - complete original Nat Hentoff liner notes - The real cover of the LP, and finally the real title!! But the best news here is the remastering job - An amazing recording to begin with, finally sounds amazing on CD. It's about time! SMOKIN' HOT !!

4 out of 5 stars Good Latin Based Trio Outing.......2002-05-09

Most of the important stuff was stated in the preceding review.

I just wanted to say that I've never heard a bad tune by this man! He could take the most innocuous tune and grab your interest with his rendition. Most everything that he recorded was done in a single take............not too many artists can make that claim. He also couldn't read music but was blessed with an uncanny ear and a feel for the melody. While he improvised well, you will note that he never strayed too far from the melody so that you never are in doubt as to what is being played......some of his intros were another matter. His unique style probably is what made him the first solo artist that I became aware of in my youth (I started out as a big band fan).

I think you will like the CD whether or not you like mambo, simply because of the piano talent. If he was not one of the top pianists of all times, it wouldn't take long to call the roll.

4 out of 5 stars Piano-Based Combo-Mambo Anyone?? ;).......1998-10-24

As the title suggests, this is a collection of tracks done with a mambo feel, in the classic Erroll Garner style. If you're a real Garner fan (like me), you'll probably enjoy it very much. If you're not into the mambo thing, you might have a take-it-or-leave-it attitude towards it. Nevertheless, still a very good disc. It has 2 bonus tracks, has also been digitally remastered, and sounds quite good. Check it out, especially all you budding pianists... Garner is the real deal!
