Customer Reviews:
If there was one concert I'd go back in time for, this is it.......2006-11-23
If you didn't know Purple Rain was track 10 on disk one, you'd be thinking to yourself, "This is a cool intro, wonder where this is going?" Given the movie had just come out and the song wasn't yet an 80's classic, covering it at Glastonbury seems an interesting and intriguing choice. Having Wickham's fiddle do the solo at the end where Prince's guitar should be is incredible.
Lots of other stuff to like here, but the reason to buy this is that the WBs were at one time, the almightiest live act on Earth. And these discs capture that. A band that one one hand can cover an obscure Dylan track, a Hank Williams ballad, Fisherman's Blues... and then burst out screaming into "Be My Enemy" and "Medicine Bow"... well, not too many bands can pull that off.
Over on the British Amazon site, one reviewer said to experience the WBs you needed this and Fisherman's Blues 2 (aka Too Close to Heaven). I'd disagree. You really just need this one. And if you need to see where the band was going at this point in time, get "Room to Roam", which is far more interesting than most of the later work.
One question - why does Amazon's Editorial Review above state this is the only official live release? It was not released by the band or its label at the time. The "official" live album was "Karma to Burn" released just a few years ago.
The Waterboys live is top drawer!.......1999-01-18
For anyone interested in the Waterboys...you've got to get this disc. The band is amazing in its delivery of the 18 songs on this double CD. Their ability to improvise is truely a rare find, and songs like Old England, The Thrill is Gone, The Pan Within, and Spirit are unbelievable. Mike Scott sings with such emotion and power throughout and the band is impeccable in its precision. The set closes with a wonderful and fitting song, Saints and Angels. This is a beautiful live tribute to a great band.
Total Inspiration.......1998-12-03
Well, if you like The Waterboys, or even if you're just curious about them, you NEED this CD. Believe me, I have followed them for almost 15 years, and can easily say that this recording comes the closest to capturing the inspiration, energy, virtuosity, and absolute emotion that Mike Scott and The Waterboys signify. The sound is a bit rough (as if you were listening live at a bar), but the performances are amazing. I got goosebumps when I listened to "This is the Sea", "The Thrill is Gone" and "Pan Within" -three masterpieces performed with utmost intensity. Also, there is an excellent, slightly funky version of "Old England". Die-hard fans and neophytes, you have to get this one.

THEY GAVE ME THE BLUES.......2004-05-10
I anticipated buying this release on Amazon , especially after reading 5 star reviewa. I was disaappointed .Two songs , i think they are titled Death Is Not the End , and This is the Sea , are great , but much of the album ,and it is a double C D , ( and especially the fiddle , ) sounds the same , with virtually none of the sounds I love on a live alvum , to wit the crowd.
for years, a bunch of us who knew, wished ..........2003-10-16
that it had been the case. That what?
that the best d*mn live band ever had recorded a live album sometime in the mid/late '80's when they were at that awesome full throttle force. Then, magically, it appeared, ten years or so later. A fitting musical coda to an out of control, always on the edge, and always insanely musical fairytale. The people behind these performances knew what we all knew, that there had to be a document other than the myriad of badly recorded bootlegs. ...
Here it is, in all its brilliant glory. If you never knew who they were, and never saw them, it won't be quite the same, but it's all here, you can just imagine it
Mike, Anto, Steve, etc .. thanks for those wonderful shows. Magnificent.
A Soulful Musical Extravaganza.......2003-01-04
From the opening soulful exuberence of Dylan's hopeful "Death is Not the End" to the poignant and soothing lullaby "Saints and Angels", The Live Adventures of the Waterboys is an orgasmic experience replete with scorching guitar rifts, sizziling fiddle playing, a sonic saxophone and, of course, Mike Scott's spiritually penetrating lyrics. Live albums are too often poorly recorded attempts at capturing the enthusiam and soul of a band's heart, but not here; for this album is a well produced and sonically breathtaking affair that takes you on a journey through Mike Scott's world, where we witness his sometimes biting reprisals of world leaders who rule with a despotic hand (notice his dedication on "We Will Not Be Lovers"), as well as his heartrending displays of human compassion and his desire for human reconciliation on such songs as "The Thrill is Gone/And the Healing Has Begun", "The Pan Within", and "Spirit." The music races from traditional style Irish ("Meet Me at the Station") to furious rock and roll ("Savage Earth Heart"). An album that will truly take your heart to places outside this earthly realm and all its mundane experiences, and leave you gasping for breath at the end, The Live Adventures of the Waterboys is a pure joy to any and all who will offer it a listen. Thank you Mike Scott for an album that heals, especially in these dark times that we live in today.
it doesn't get better than this!.......2002-08-15
this represents the pinnacle of the Waterboys' achievement - demonstrating how music can really take you to a higher place. The band fits so well together, and the atmosphere of their live shows comes through so strong!
the second disk (Glastonbury Festival) is absolutely stunning, including stellar versions of The Pan Within, Spirit & Savage Earth Heart.
Every Waterboys fan must have this!
