4 out of 5 stars Great Songs but recordings sound crude compared to later stuff.......2007-05-07

I wish they would re-mix this album or even better re-record it, the songs are great but the recording, mix, arangements and performances are just not as good as their later recording, the CD sounds like a demo
compared to Big Chair or Seeds.

The remastering helps the overall sound but it also makes the shortcomings
more obvious.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great Alt-rock albums.......2007-01-29

Like Simon & Garfunkel a generation earlier the Tears for Fear duo of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith will with any luck shine bright for generations to come. The Hurting is their best album and one of the best (top 10) from the 80s (IMHO), all songs resonate and reach deeply inside. The opening to Pale Shelter embodies the mid-80's soaring atmospheric Alt-rock sound. While other Alt-heads were going gaga over bands like New Order, The Smiths and The Cure (yes, all great acts....U2 is a different story altogether) some of us were cheering for Alt-Alt bands like TFF, Howard Jones, The Cars, Echo & The Bunnymen {and for me all courtesy of the once great WLIR radio station in New York (now reborn and webcasting!)}. Thank you Roland and Curt for your great gift to us.

4 out of 5 stars Brought back memories.......2007-01-13

I heard the promo for the new X-Box game "gears of war" and said to myself, "I know that song!" Sure enough, after some before work googling I figured out that it was Tears for Fears a group that I listened to quite a bit back in the '80s, the track "Mad World". I went ahead and purchased this, received it in a week and quickly ripped it to my computer. I've been listening to tracks from this album ever since on my mp3 player. A good trip down memory lane!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-01-11

I have till late been only a casual listener of TFF, and in fact was considerably disappointed with their later "Seeds of love" album. Nevertheless, I took a chance on a triple set of what seemed to be at least two very good albums (Hurting / Big Chair). Having listened to all three now, I have to say that "The Hurting" is TFF's masterpiece. The album is more melodious than its successors (bar perhaps the slightly raucous "The Prisoner"), and the vocal delivery and guitar/synth arrangements are much more effective. "Big chair" just has two great tracks, but this one is consistently good from beginning to end. If you own just one TFF record, this should be it. "Mad world" and "Pale shelter" alone are worth the price of the CD

5 out of 5 stars Tears For Fears - Moral Lesson.......2006-09-14

Tears for Fears was not the average 80's pop band, even if they looked like it on the surfice. They used synthsizers, drum machines with a meliodic and hook laden sound. But the music itself was often melancholy and they brought up serious issues like family values like few contemporary bands at the time had the guts to sing about. Tears for Fears got their name from Arthur Janov's primal scream therapy and they band consisted of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, two highschool friends from Bath, England. Roland was the writer of most songs during the career while they both were co-singing. Some of the music may sound a little dated today (this being released in 1983) but the touchy subjects they bring up are still present today.

The opener and title track is a great pop song and at the same time a good introduction to what is coming, it's about children suffering without anyone noticing or caring. Tears for Fears trademark was mixing good pop with serious subjects and they really succeeded with that. "Mad World" was one of the big hits and recently covered by Gary Jules and taken back to the charts again as the sountrack for "Donnie Darko". The moody alternative song brings up the sad reality we're living in, a world without rules or morals and the people suffering from it. Excellent and haunting ballad. "Pale Shelter" was originally released in 1982 but failed to make it big on the charts, so the song was re-recorded, remixed and re-released and the result was a big hit even for "Pale Shelter". The song is slow paced and distinct with guitars, synthesizers and percussion. It brings up the lack of love some children get cause of bad parenthood. "Ideas As Opiates" is almost minimalistic, it basically only feauture percussion and slow piano sound, the lyrics are also sparse. "Memories Fade" is also a stripped and melancholy song, with it's haunting lyrics and saxophone it's one of this album's highlights.

"Suffer Them Children" is a synth laden pop song about children with problems growing up cause they're ignored and not given too much love. Watch Me Bleed" got very strong lyrics "Heaven comes to he who waits/ But I know Im getting nowhere/ And all the deeds of yesterday
/Have really helped to pave my way" and is overall another great pop/rock song. "Change" was one of three big hits on this album, it got a trademark marimba sound and a great hook which paved the way to the charts. The song is focusing on the destructive behavior of a loved one. "The Prisoner" is the darkest of songs with some very strong lyrics and arrangements suited for a horror film, the lyrics are sparse and they're almost whispered. The last song is called "Start of a Breakdown" feautures a catchy synthesizer sound and meliodic percussion. Why this song was not released as single is beyond me, but it's one of the best songs. This remastered version feauture remixed of Pale Shelter", "Mad World" and "Change and the non-album song "The Way You Are" is present. It's another fantastic song by the way. Uptempo with great percussion arrangements. Nice it was added.

Overall, Tears for Fears magnificient debut was one of the most daring and thoughtful albums of the 80's. It's equally intellegent and beautiful full of good lyrics and great arrangements. With this remastered version you get better sound + bonus tracks and the non album song "The Way You Are". Some of the songs may sounds a little dated today, considering all the new equipment used in today's music, but the lyrics and subjects they brought up are just as present in today's society. This album may get a little too personal and the lyrics get frightening when you listen closely to them at times, however if you're a music fan that likes smart lyrics and lyrics that make sense then this is something for you. It's a concept album and it very thoughtful and sincere. One of the greatest debuts of the 80's, let alone albums.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Synth-Pop Set- Terrible Packaging.......2005-08-17

The first three Tears For Fears albums are all quintessential 80's pop. That is to say, the singles are phenomenal, the album tracks have cool synth experimentation, but there are a few slow spots on each disc.

"The Hurting" is almost like a therapy session on record. Some of the lyrics may be a little too introspective, but the hooks more than make up for it. Mad World is an amazing song (follow it up with great cover version in "Donnie Darko") and Pale Shelter remains a sturdy single.

"Songs From the Big Chair" contains this group's biggest hits. Shout is almost like an ode to primal scream therapy, and Everybody Wants to Rule the World may be the best single of the entire decade. Head Over Heels turns out to be part of a pretty cool song suite. There is no filler on this album with the possible exception of track 8 (the instumental last track of the original album which just doesn't really seem to go anywhere).

"The Seeds of Love" start to drop the synth-pop vibe for more Beatles-like sounds and late 80's pop values (which these guys actually do quite well). The title track and Woman In Chains are the singles here, but my favorite is Standing On The Corner Of The Third World, featuring Manu Katche on drums and some really cool worldbeat sounds.

The packaging on this set is a bit of a problem. The CD's seem to have trouble holding in their spots, and I had to exchange this set because of strange warping on the second disc. My next copy still had a few strange warped marks on it, but at least it plays ok. Additionaly, while you do get the CD booklets, this set leaves out the back covers. This unfortunately makes putting these discs in normal CD cases less desirable, as well as robbing the owner of the back cover art. Still, this is a pretty cheap way of getting these albums remastered with bonus tracks (as separate purchases it would cost $45-60).

4 out of 5 stars Tears For Fears' outstanding debut.......2006-06-09

Tears For Fears really hit the mainstream after "Shout" got serious play time on MTV in 1985. Their somewhat overlooked (except by the real fans) debut, though, was truly an incredible effort that laid the groundwork for everything they did afterward.

With the possible exception of their followup release, Songs From The Big Chair, Tears For Fears released a string of very strong albums from start to finish. The Hurting is no exception.

"The Hurting", "Mad World", "Pale Shelter", and "Change" are probably the most well-known tracks, and for good reason. Those along easily make this album worth owning. Even "Ideas As Opiates" and "The Start of the Breakdown", which are the weakest songs in my opinion, don't bring down the overall quality of this album.

The only release Tears For Fears ever did that outdid The Hurting is probably The Seeds Of Love from 1987, which I consider to be their crowning achievement. The Hurting doesn't come too far behind, and for that reason is highly recommended.

My only caveat would be that The Hurting is quite a bit darker lyrically than any of their later releases, but I'd consider this to be a great place to start if you want to dive into the Tears for Fears catalog.

5 out of 5 stars Quite Unique.......2003-12-06

Not that Tears For Fears were ever conventional "The Hurting"
does have an overall sobering affect. At least lyrically-suffering
and discontent seem to be a reucerring theme.Yet "Pale Shelter",
"Ideas For Opiates",the minimal "Memory Fades "and the fabulous
"Mad World" are musically ambitious enough to back up the bands
lyrical ideas.Definately a stand-out moment of 1983!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums from 1983........2002-08-25

Tears For Fears were and still are an incredible band that few others can rival.

The edition I'm reviewing is the older edition without the bonus tracks.

The Hurting, released in 1983 is TFFs debut album that unfortunately is overshadowed by it's follow-up 1985s Songs From The Big Chair. The Hurting is lighter musically but lyrically it's probably the darkest album of all of their 80s releases. My favorite songs are Change, the title track & Start Of The Breakdown. The lyrical prowess is strong especially with Mad World & and the doomsday like Start Of The Breakdown. This track is my favorite song from this often underrated LP. Just the electric electrifying guitar at the beginning of the opening title track proves that TFFstood out well from other bands from the early 80s and now almost 20 years after it's release The Hurting still stands out well from most other LPs that were released the same year. The last track Start Of The Breakdown was pretty far ahead of it's time and coul almost fit on the Big Chair LP.

The remastered edition has four bonus tracks. Two are extended remixes, Mad World (world remix)is the original with an altered beat. and one is an extended version of the B-Side The Way You Are. The best of them is the extended version of the intimate Change which is extended to about 6 minutes.

As I listened to Start Of The Breakdown I've noticed that two other songs share similar chord structures with this one. One is Always In The Past, a B-Side from the Seeds Of Love sessions and the other is Hypnoculture from Rolands solo album Tomcats Screaming Outside. No offense to any of these songs. I just simply noticed similar chord structures between these three songs, that's all.

The Hurting is a must own.

5 out of 5 stars Review of the Hurting album from the british artist duo Tear.......2001-06-03

The Hurting album is a pretty good album from Tears For Fears. Both Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith have a lot of talent in their music. Tears For Fears does not have a single formula but are masters of whatever form they undertake. If you have not heard of this band, than this is the album to get. Thank you Tears For Fears.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking Journey Into the Halls of Angst.......2000-12-16

Tears For Fears has the dubious distinction of not realizing their full potential in all musical releases after their debut album. Perhaps nowhere else is there such a flagrant example of a band having amazing genius and intellectual prowess and throwing it out on a second release for catchy commerical tunes. For those of you who put on the headphones and listen to Pale Shelter or Mad World and then listen to Everybody Wants to Rule the World, you know exactly what I mean. This album is like a sacred manual on how to write intelligent songs that touch the emotions deep within. The keyboard arrangements are phenomenal on this CD, the vocals are full of pain and reflection. Buy this and treasure it.

Now five records into a solo career, the former guitarist for Green on Red leaves his stripped-down, bluesy past behind, adding a score of Mellotron, saxophone, synthesizer, and sampling for a more urban mosaic. The result is a soulful medley where Prophet continues to follow the Dylan book of songwriting, arming his characters with compelling story lines and clever wordplay. The title track's account of a broken relationship proves exultant thanks to a playful Farfisa organ and splendid backing vocals by Prophet's wife, Stephanie Finch. Prophet mimics Tom Waits over a fierce J.J. Cale riff on "La Paloma." And radio programmers looking for a hit should check out "Dyin' All Young," a mother's ode to her young son's death. It's an instantly catchy, though forever haunting ballad that propels Chuck Prophet up another rung on the ladder of underappreciated songwriters. --Scott Holter

Album Description

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars complex and cool.......2003-10-21

I have no idea about his past bands or recordings, but this CD is dazzling. It is complex (as Dylan, another reviewer said...maybe, but more wry...like Jack Hardy, more) and amazingly versatile. It is really cool. It's got soul, it's got groove, it's a great ride. WHY ISN'T THIS GUY FAMOUS???????

5 out of 5 stars Three listens. You're hooked........2001-09-17

Earlier this summer I bought Pete Yorn's new album and loved it. So much so, that I thought it would be a while before I stumbled upon something that could pull me away from it. Then, I bought this on a whim after hearing the first track. By the third listen, I was out searching for everything the guy has ever been associated with. He is a musician with a capital M and tackles half a dozen genres here - all successfully. This is the most eclectic album by a single performer I have ever heard. If you had to pigeonhole it, you might say that it is a cross between Nick Cave and Karl Wallinger (World Party), but there something here for everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent work.......2001-02-07

It's no Homeade Blood or Brother Aldo, but certainly more radio-friendly, if that's a good thing. Great anticipation for new recording with Jules Shear.Anyone know when it will be available and the title of the project?

5 out of 5 stars Chuck goes downtown.......2000-08-03

It is actually hard to believe that this cd is from one of the former members of Green On Red who were one of the forerunners of the Alt-country movement. There is nothing country or rural sounding about this cd. Urban sounding would be the phrase that comes to mind when discussing this cd. One thing that hasn't changed though is Prophet's uncanny songwriting ability. The lyrics take unexpected turns (Lucky is not about hitting a streak of good fortune) and the melodies get under your skin. I would also highly recommend Chuck's prior cd "Homemade Blood" if you can find it as it has been cutout. He plays a little more guitar on it but the songs are just as good as the ones on "The Hurting Business".

4 out of 5 stars Chuck can do no wrong..........2000-05-31

Well, I'm a little disappointed at the drift away from the much more organic music of Balinese Dancer and Feast of Hearts, two of the best albums by anybody. The turntables/samples really don't add a lot to my ears, maybe they are a little gimmicky... I'm giving this one 4 stars though three would be more likely if I didn't know his work so well. It's an interesting album & it may make him some well deserved new fans, but I'd start with Balinese Dancer, Feast of Hearts, or even Homemade Blood first. Chuck is THE great undiscovered American songwriter!
