Elliott Smith's Guitar [Explicit Lyrics]
Editorial Reviews
The Mercury, 13 June 2002 (Katia Dunn)
" Super-poppy pop, trippy instrumentals... melodic, crooning girl voices singing, I loveyou, but I think you're kindof an a**hole."
Amy Denio, May 2002 (Tone Dogs, Curlew, Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet, Pale Nudes, Etc. )
"Really great... each time I listen, I hear more cool things."

A member of the band Heatmiser, Elliot Smith recorded home demos on any equipment he could get his hands on. His first "solo" album is a cheap four-track home recording that hints at the melodic possibilities Smith would explore in greater detail on subsequent releases. The title track is remarkable but with four songs referred to in sequential order as "No Name #1," "No Name #2," etc. ... the inspiration isn't always fully firing. Blessed with a quiet angelic voice and a lyrical mind that easily transforms the squalid details of everyday life into something worth hearing about twice, Smith stood on the verge of getting it on. With his next, self-titled release, he did.--Rob O'Connor

the "point a" of Elliot........2007-07-24
4.46 stars.
for anybody who even half-way enjoys the one-man-and-a-guitar stylings of pre-"figure 8" Elliot Smith, go ahead and make that collection complete by snapping up a copy of "roman candle". i bought this album for that reason alone and wound-up very much enjoying it.
the opener, from whence the album takes its title, is enough to justify the purchase price, but that's not to say that the rest of the album is anything to simply gloss over. Elliot fans who, like myself, became such because of the "good will hunting" soundtrack will be happy to have a familiar friend along the way in the form of "no name no. 3". also, the sinister swell that "last call" delves into as it comes to a close is pretty ded-gum neat, so be sure to check that out as well.
i only rate this album a 4 instead of a 5 because i DO NOT wish to give the impression that i find it to be on par with "Elliot Smith", so if you are trying to decide between the two of them, hit that other one first. however, if after injesting that one you like it as much as the rest of the Elliot-lovin' free world does, be sure to get ye back out into thine music-gettin' landscape to procure a copy of "roman candle" for yo'self as well. enjoy!
Great Album.......2007-04-17
This maybe my favorite Elliott Smith album next to Either/Or. I would purchase this album with Either/Or if I were just getting into Elliott Smith. It is a very chill album to listen to while driving at night, doing homework, or going to sleep. Elliott's acoustic guitar playing and lyrics are very well arranged. Give it a glance.
beautiful.......2007-03-13
i bought this cd completely on a whim at a local cd store. it took a few listens for certain songs to really sink in, but now i absolutely love it. No Name #3 and Condor Avenue are worth the price tag alone
A glimpse inside the audio diary of Elliot Smith.......2007-03-05
This unpretentious cd is sparse and mysterious as was the late recording artist himself, who died under mysterious circumstances shortly after receiving critical acclaim. I think it is the best representation of Smith, who has other more polished cd's that seem to have somehow missed his essence. This one seems to have been recorded early on, low-fi in a basement or bedroom, and lets you get up close to him without studio intervention. There are many tracks that don't even have bass or drums, just guitars and voice. The tunes are haunting and insecure, but will soon get right under your skin. This is no high-gloss commercial venture, but more like a glimpse inside somebody's audio diary.
Three Cheers.......2006-07-16
Roman Candle has a very endearing adolescence to it much softer than Elliott's later work. An innocent recording of someone's youth.

Album Description
Winterpills bring you a tender, filigreed sound, a humming and a fragmentation of warmth and chill, a delicate suspension of belief. They are a band playing you songs of pretty losses and hollow hopefulness. They formed on a bare wood floor during a winter when mutual friends and potential enemies met to nurse wounds, drink, ignore the obvious, play other people's songs, and found they had their own. They now give them to you in all their friendly, angry, wimpy, moody fragility.

Haunting and Beautiful.......2006-07-24
An amazing album that will haunt you with achingly beautiful melodies and intelligent lyrics. Reminiscent of both Elliot Smith and Radiohead, songs like "Pills for Sara" and "Threshing Machine" will stick with you. I had the good fortune to see this band at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and they were one of the highlights of the weekend.
One for the Ages.......2006-06-13
I was introduced to Winterpills by a friend in New Jersey, who raved about this CD. He was right. This is truly magnificent music. There is something quite classic in the blending of the vocals that is magical. Just listen to "Pills for Sara" "Laughing" and "Found Weekend" and your soul will be stirred. While others are comparing them to newer bands, I hear sixties Mamas and Papas and Its a Beautiful Day in there. The songs are timeless and expansive. If this came out in the sixties, it would be considered a classic today. Yes, it is that good. Do not hesitate in picking this one up. A+++
The Washington Post was right!.......2006-03-26
I bought this cd based solely on the Washington Post review. This is BEAUTIFUL music--perfect for a lazy sunday afternoon.
Tasteful Folk Pop with Substance and Melodies Shines.......2006-02-08
Folk pop can fall into certain traps: it can be cliched, too precious, or too derivative of other established bands, but the Winterpills are an original band with warm melodies who avoid these traps. Fans of Innocence Mission, Belle and Sebastian, and The Trash Can Sinatras will probably enjoy the Winterpills. If you like this type of melodic folk rock, may I suggest the Swedish band Ronderlin.
Finally a Cure.......2006-02-03
Is there a pill for the winter? Yes. It's this album.
Lush and jangly and warm, like the morning sun slipping in past the icycles on your roof. It envelopes you and warms you up. This album hugs you.
I found the Winterpills through a band called School for the Dead and their singer Henning Ohlenbusch. Ohlenbusch and the Winterpills' Philip Price were collaborators in a band called The Gay Potatoes which also featured Chris Collingwood of Fountains of Wayne. Did you follow that? I'm not sure even I did.
Price, like Ohlenbusch and Collingwood, has a talent for scribing beautiful, friendly, melodic, and moving pop hits. The Winterpills themselves, the band, arranges them into these delicate yet powerful expressions of emotion. You'll love it.
If you enjoy the music of Elliot Smith, Sufjan Stevens, The Shins, The Sundays, Paul Simon, School for the Dead, Fountains of Wayne, and Suzanne Vega you will want this album for your very own.

For fans of thoughtful Portland pop-punk-pop.......2005-08-18
This appeals to me as a long-time Heatmiser fan. Neil Gust was of course overshadowed by his band-mate and fellow singer-songwriter Elliot Smith, who was simultaneously pursuing already a solo career on Cavity Search and Kill Rock Stars labels. But Gust, taking often gay themes and working them into Heatmiser's power-pop-punk structures, continues to evolve leading this Portland trio, which keeps tracing the templates Gust (and Smith, even if the latter resisted them) established together as co-frontmen of Heatmiser. This album sounded only so-so when I first played it. It will not exactly leap out at you. You should get used to it slowly, coming back to it in a variety of moods. I returned to it after a long lapse and found that I was ready to appreciate its understated tones and offhand pace better.
This 2002 album follows "No Memory," but progresses smoother. It seems to have been more carefully prepared for than the restless debut which followed Heatmiser's demise more rapidly. The effort in this album, as its plaintive title suggests, may be not as widely heard as Smith's recordings, but admirers of their city's other 90's bands such as Quasi--whose Sam Coombes (ex-Heatmiser) appears on one track, Pond, & Heatmiser should find much to like--as should fans of Smith's more aggressive (if far less Beatlesque and baroque in No. 2) styles. Joanna Bolme, later of (S. Malkmus &) the Jicks and co-compiler of Smith's posthumous album, appears as co-"recorder"; the fourth Heatmiser member, Tony Lash, mixed the sharp & clear pressing.
It reminds me at times of Bob Mould vs. Husker Du, as in Sugar he attempted to marry the rawer pop-punk edge with more traditional song stylings and lyrics about relationships and yearning into a catchy delivery that neither insults the listener's intelligence nor strains to be overly sophisticated "college/alternative" self-referential ghettoized rock as a category too insular to be lastingly appealing as song craftsmanship rather than the exorcising of one's inner demons.
Mould and Gust contend with issues smartly, packaging them into three-minute messages that convey themselves smartly, yet, at their best, in a humbler persona than a strutting rock poseur. While Mould's critical acclaim, like Smith's, has dominated post-Husker and post-Heatmiser efforts by Gust (contrast those of Grant Hart), I trust that Gust and his band-mates will keep remembering that there's a loyal following for their brand of solid punk-pop as we mature alongside them, and that the demand for their thoughful blend of energy and introspection keeps up as we await a third album from No. 2...

Harold Blumenfeld: "Rilke for Voice & Guitar".......2000-03-09
This CD set includes "Rilke for Voice & Guitar" by Harold Blumenfeld. The composer submits this review of the work by Donal Henahan in the New York Times. "In Harold Blumenfeld's austerely beautiful 'Rilke', a cycle of three songs, soprano Rosalind Rees sang superbly, with a dulcet tone, unusual attention to dynamic subtleties, and flawless pitch. The songs, with the guitar softening contemporary asperities that a piano sometimes exaggerates, made their lonely, pained point with the utmost precision. The guitarist, David Starobin, performed with exemplary technique and great sensitivity as accompanist."

Customer Reviews:
Acoustic Grunge.......2005-09-14
The Graze's debut album, Iowa Anvil, is a sort of amalgamation of early Nirvana/Soundgarden style grunge with a touch of Death Cab and a hit of Damien Rice. The lyrics are solid, not necessarily rhyming but simply doing what they want when they want, and the stories they tell are enjoyable.
I have to say, though, the music itself is where this album really shines. It really is a grunge style, but in a flavor that was really uncommon when grunge was popular. I mean, when one thinks of grunge, one generally thinks of distorted, electric guitars - and don't get me wrong, they show up a couple of times, and to great effect. But the guitar's being mainly acoustic lends this album a nice, mellow quality that most grunge doesn't have to offer. Now, that might not be someone's cup of tea; but it happens to be mine.
This is definitely a wonderful debut album, so if you enjoy grunge, and more mellow music, this cd is just about perfect for you.

Customer Reviews:
A real departure - strange and brilliant!.......2002-06-20
This can't be the new Elliott Smith CD. No way. Challenging in places, this recording reveals a diversity of interests and opens great mental expanses. But really I never expected this type of sound-I listened to the whole thing through and through and I still don't believe Elliott had anything to do with it. Weird.
"Not necessarily Normal, but Beautiful".......2002-05-11
This album is all over the place but it's good! It's filled with catchy hooks, songs you can't get out of your head and songs that sound like soundtracks. An emotional listen. Parts of it make you laugh, parts of it are sombering and the Elliott Smith song deserves to be a college radio hit.
The rest is too strange for the radio but Brainwarmer doesn't seem like the kind of band who's trying to make it big. There are some lo-fi parts to this album, some electronica and even country western.
Check it out if you love something different and mixing it up. Recommended if you like Radiohead, Mary Timony, Aphex Twin, Portishead, Thalia Zedek, New Pornographers, Julie Cruise or Delirium.
Strange and lovely.......2002-05-10
Have you ever listened to an independent, listener-supported community radio station, late late at night, when they let the freaks have shows? And the freaks always have excellent taste in music and play the most obscure little gems, with seemingly no concept of continuity? So you'll hear a silly pop song followed by an ambient/experimental piece, followed by a country tune? That's what this cd is like: really cool tunes thrown together in a way that's delightfully wrong. This is a great cd to have in the car for when you're driving between urban centers at 3 a.m., and you can't stand listening to talk radio any more.
Great music, even better bodies.......2002-05-09
If you love dark yet jaunty, heartbroken yet optimistic tunes, Brainwarmer will do you right. See them live if you get a chance. Word on the street is they nude up for the encore, and every last one of 'em is a perfect physical specimen.
astonishing/scary.......2002-05-08
The dark past of these folks is enough to scare anyone. I know I don't have to tell any of you about their unsavory hijinks!
The record is an amazing relic of their lucid moments, though. Swirling solid masses of noise are punctured by blunt slabs of lyrical wonder. Elliot Smith's Guitar is only a scratch on the surface. Tiffany Lee Brown may be the next Patti Smith, or not.
