Household Favorite.......2007-06-08
I got to first and foremost admit to being a huge Collective Soul fan. Well, this was the first record that came out since I've enjoyed listening to them so much, so naturally, I bought and fell in love with it almost immediately.
For Collective Soul, this is very similar to 2 of their other albums (even more so than the rest). Disciplined Breakdown breaks down like Collective Soul (the second record) and also like Blender (the fifth record). This is more consistently melodic than Blender while also seeming more consistently heavy than Collective Soul.
Less generally speaking, I love the songs here. Like Full Circle fits the title and somewhat tells a story while remaining melodic, catchy, a rock song, and a typical Collective Soul song. They took a stab at perfection with all of the brilliant timing setup in Blame: that song is just marvelous the way it all comes together. That old titlecut Disciplined Breakdown, well, here's the breakdown: not a radio single but it is the best song on the record. More???...well, it has it all--it is just a well-writen, fierce, complete song.
The songs on this album are vividly complex, by the way. I think Ed and Dean Rollands' Songwriting abilities really come through on this record. Wow, what a winner.
Outstanding!.......2005-12-02
What a great CD! Haven't taken it out of CD player since I first heard it! I'm a newcomer to CS, starting with Youth and working my way backwards to the beginning of their collection--This is one terrific CD that I, as many other viewers, keep playing each song two and three times over until I get to the next song. This one just rocks! Every single song is awesome! Great lyrics, great writing. To me, this is the best one and not to be missed.

Another solid outing by Collective Soul
Precious Declaration gets the album off to an energetic start with a little of CS' way of telling it like it is. Things soften a little with Listen and Maybe, yet both songs show an intricacy and level of emotion not present in many songs today--especially Maybe. Full Circle is one of those feel-good songs, but it is a little too light musically--maybe it's the harmonica, maybe the horns--there is a definite yet very slight annoying quality. Blame is bookended by short acoustic numbers--maybe to calm listeners in advance of the harsh lyrics(that is, if they could refer to you). The title track is classic saw-blade distortion seen on previous Collective Soul work, and it works well here. The next four songs--Forgiveness, Link, Giving, and In Between--all have that endearing quality and beautiful production that is always present when Collective Soul show a softer musical side. Some may be turned off by the pristine production, but at the same time it enables the listener to pick out the various details. Crowded Head definitely lets out a little frustration, and is not a favorite here musically, yet it's done well. Everything returns to the old recipe of meaningful lyrics set over top of layers and layers of clear, concise giutar work, solid lyrics and good percussion--the norm on this album. Collective Soul continue to mature with this offering, and time has treated this one well.
As good as all their others. .......2004-09-01
I have always liked "Collective Soul" since their first single came out, but for some reason I never gave this third album a listen. My mistake. What a great record. I find it to be just as good as anything else they've done, so if you like anything from the debut to "Blender", you should like this. It starts with the two excellent songs "Precious Declaration" and "Listen", picks up again with the title cut and "Forgiveness", and continues to impress with "Link", "Giving", and "Everything". Overall a must for fans, and anyone who likes pop, rock, or grunge should enjoy it. I hear they're working on album #6, let's hope it's this good.
Possibly the Best of Collective Soul.......2003-07-09
I first heard of Collective Soul with the single "Shine" and I was a little impressed, but not enough to buy the CD. When "Disciplined Breakdown" came out, I decided to give it a shot. WOW!! Talk about major growth as artists!! I was amazed at the complexity and layers of their music as well as the deepness of their lyrics. "Precious Declaration" is one of my favorite songs to rock out to, "Listen" is very artistic pop/rock, "Maybe" is one of my favorite songs - speaks of the feelings you experience of losing someone close to you - beautifully acoustic guitar here. "Full Circle" and "Blame" are gems of pop/rock music as well with very intense lyrics. This was one of the most under-sold and under-rated CDs of the 90's and remains one of my most-played CDs even today. I highly recommend this band to people who value deep lyrics and artistic music... Collective Soul does not disappoint!
