Interpol create literate, atmospheric, moody, trashy post-punk music that recalls '80s faves the Psychedelic Furs. And this is definitely a good thing. While most young bands are content to rhyme "make it" with "fake it," Interpol pens melodramatic tales of tortured and tortuous urban relationships that are truly refreshing. Like their peers the Strokes, they're bright, sophisticated, and meticulous enough to build stirring soundscapes. Turn On the Bright Lights is a must for anyone who missed Echo & the Bunnymen, the Furs, and Joy Division the first time around. --Dominic Wills

5 out of 5 stars The best new group.......2007-07-21

Lamenting the death of Ian Curtis and the demise of Joy Division? Dry your tears; Interpol is here. While not as good as Joy Division (what group is?), Interpol is the logical choice for those who miss and crave that wonderful Manchester sound i.e. Joy Division, The Smiths, etc. You can listen to this CD over and over and never get bored. Interpol is a revelation.

4 out of 5 stars "My best friend's a butcher, he has sixteen knives.".......2007-07-13

Interpol makes music with repetitious guitars and bass accompanied by slightly off-kilter vocals delivering nonsense lyrics. It's better than that sounds, but maybe not as great as some critics would think. Turn On the Bright Lights is a fun album to listen to. It's never boring, and they create some deeply affecting melodies that are really quite enjoyable. There's rarely a dull moment throughout. I just really don't see how it's much better than similarly catchy/non-varied music that is labeled as punk and generally ignored. Interpol is about as good as that general kind of music gets, but I think they get a ton of acclaim because they sound more mysterious, not because they're actually that superior musically.

The first track is my favorite. The piano blends with the guitar and works well with the rest of the sounds. "Obstacle 1" is a good single, since it encapsulates their sound quite well and is one of the better songs. "NYC" is a slower song and fairly enjoyable. "PDA" is another good single that represents the band well. The thing is, most of the songs do a good job here, because they all sound pretty similar. "Obstacle 2" has catchy vocals and nice interaction with the instruments. Towards the end there are a couple tracks over six minutes long that show a bit more range from the band as they experiment a little. "Roland" might be the hardest track, with a good riff in the chorus. All in all, not a whole lot about the album really stands out from the rest but it is a consistent, good album.

Ok , the title says it all , nuff said. This is one the greatest albums i've ever heard in my life , it flows perfectly from start to end and the musicianship is outstanding. Why is it still only 4 stars , why????!!

5 out of 5 stars It's like learning a new language..........2007-05-29

For the longest time I kept telling myself I really oughta write a nice review for Interpol on Amazon, and tonight's the night. This is my ode to TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS by the amazing New York band Interpol. I had bought the CD the year it came out and decided to take it with me on a road trip from LA to Vegas. I should say I absolutely dread driving to Vegas, most Angelenos do. What is supposed to be a 3-hour trip usually turns out to be a 5-hour bumper to bumper nightmare and the road leading to Sin City is not exactly scenic, with nothin' but desert and all, I mean, how many cactus can one admire in an endless open field of cactuses? But I sensed this trip was different, and I knew the instant I heard the opening track to this flawless debut of an album.

What's more, with each song I grew increasingly interested in the music and slowly drifted from my environment, finding myself enjoying the ride. The road rage that I had started slipping away with each passing of familiar street signs. Imagine a perfect harmony of landscape blended with poetry for my ears. Surely this can't be one of the rare albums that I can listen to throughout its entirety, I pondered, and anticipated. In the end I wasn't let down. With each repeated listen (that's the trick I think, one would have to give this multiple consecutive hearings in order to fully appreciate it), I realized I started developing feelings for the album.

Feelings?

Ah, but let me tell you why.

Each song tells a story, and when I'm told a story, I want it to be as intoxicating, as dreamy and as atmospheric as each song is on this album. It evokes a mood that's long lost along with childhood, the mood of being afloat, being weightless, being innocent with a sense of discovery. As soon as you hear the opening words, you'll know you're being transferred to a place where you wish time stood still. It's mesmerizing, this album, to say the least. And it is dark, and ambient, and very moody, in all good sense of the words. It is music that evokes the very feelings in me, the longing, the fears, the hopes and the dreams. Whenever I'm in a bad mood or have had a tough day, I play this album and instantly feel better. It has over the years become my best friend, my confidant, my haven, a way to relax and enjoy this thing called life. This album is excellent throughout and that's how one should listen to it, in its entirety, but like anybody else I have my own personal favorites:

The beautifully lush opener "Untitled" really paints a picture for the rest of the album. This song makes me want to renew old friendships with long neglected school chums, "I will surprise you sometime, I'll come round.." It reminds me of the carefree, more fearless days of my youth.

"Obstacle 1" and "PDA" were singles I had heard on the radio that propelled me to buy the album. Both are fast with great guitar and drums. I thought if the rest of the songs sound like the two, it'd be money well spent. Turns out I got every pennies' worth and then some. This record really was the best 13-dollar investment I've ever made.

An early favorite is "Hands Away." This is perhaps the most melodic, most hypnotic song on the album. I was cast under its spell upon hearing the beginning riffs. "Will you put my hands away, will you be my man?..." This song is kinda like "Untitled" in that there are only a handful of lyrics to both the songs but the impact they'll hit you with is immeasurable.

My absolute favorite song in the Interpol catalogue is the wonderfully sexually blatant, yet tender and romantic 7-minute opus called "Stella Was a Diver and She's Always Down." It's flawless, this song. There is not a part in this epic song that I don't like. From the music to the lyrics, it's like a dream, and a nice way of spending seven minutes of one's day, loving "Stella" the way Paul Banks does:

"when she walks down the street, she knows there's people watching
building fronts are just fronts, to hide the people watching her
she once fell through the street, down the man hole in that bad way
the underground drip, was just like her scuba days..."

The last song on the album is called "Leif Erikson" and I find out he's one of the first European settlers to set foot in the States. I don't know what that has to do with the song really, cos to me this song conjures up all kinds of notions and ideals of romance. From Paul's voice and the lyrics to the dreamy surreal atmosphere of the drums and guitars, this the most mesmerizing song of all:

"she says it helps with the lights out
her rabid glow is like braille to the night
she feels that my sentimental side should be held with kids gloves
she doesn't know that I left my urge in the ice box
she swears I'm just prey for the female
well then hook me up and pull me babycakes
cause I like to get hooked

the clock is set for nine but you know you're gonna make it eight
so that you can take some time and teach each other to reciprocate..."

If you're still reading this then tonight's the night. Get romanced by a lil' Interpol and who knows, maybe you'll start harboring feelings too.

Afterall, they're nothing more than feelings.

5 out of 5 stars freaking love this album.......2007-05-18

I got into Interpol by seeing them at a few festivals in 2004... and after they joined the Curiosa festival I was hooked. They are an amazing band, and if this isn't a perfect first album, I don't know what is. And they keep getting better and better.

I just saw them in Las Vegas and they did about four of their new songs off the upcoming album - and everything sounds fabulous! This is going to be a great year for this band.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2007-07-06

When Richard Thompson released this album, his first with his wife Linda, he had already a relatively long recording career behind him. As a founder member of Fairport Convention he was the group on their first five albums. His characteristic guitarplaying style can also be heard on Sandy Denny¨s early solo albums and he had released his own soloalbum "Henry the Human Fly" in 1972.

During his time with Fairport Convention Thompson matured a lot as a songwriter and many of the band's early favourites were either written or co-written by Thompson. His inspiration by traditional British music also became still more clear. Many of the songs on "Henry" and "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" actually sound like they were traditional folk-songs.

His collaboration with Linda lasted for 8 years and resulted in 6 great albums. This their first is often regarded as the strongest with Richard's songwriting extraordinary inspired and varied, and his distictive voice blends beautifully with Linda's on these great songs.

The terrific opener "When I Get to the Border", sung by Richard, is catchy with optimistic lyrics. A little unsual for Thompson, whose lyrics often are dark and sad.

Equally cathcy ( and optimistic ) is the title track which deserved to be hit beautifully sung by Linda.

Heartbreakingly beautiful is also the sad ballad "Withered and Died", sung by Linda in way that makes you think of her friend Sandy Denny.

The dark side of Richard's songwriting become apprent on songs like "Down Where the Drunkards Roll", "Has He Got a Friend For Me" and especially "The End of the Rainbow" . Even the cathcy "We'll Sing Hallelujah" has some pretty dismal lyrics.

The budget for this album was supposedly very limited, but it does show anywhere. Great arrangements, crisp sound and best of all strong songwriting and palying from first track till the closer "The Great Valerio".

The bonus-tracks are 3 1975 live-recordings - nice to have but some may find that they disturb the very consistent feel of the original album, which I won't hesitate to call a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Desert Island Disc.......2007-03-07

My partner and I have over 4,000 CDs (all types of music), and if I could only keep 10 of them, I'd keep this one.

5 out of 5 stars Strong, consistent music.......2007-03-07

Even for an album released in 1974, on the surface "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" seems deeply unhip. In the year when glam rock was at its peak and punk godmother Patti Smith released her first angry single, Richard and Linda Thompspon put out this album of English folk music. Some of the songs, such as "Down Where the Drunkards Roll" or "Little Beggar Girl" are so deeply rooted in the Anglo-Celtic folk tradition that it would easy to imagine they date from the eighteenth century. And yet this is part of the strength of this remarkable album. Largely unswayed by the fashions of the moment, the Thompsons produced an album of beautifully crafted and performed folk and folk-rock songs which have stood the test of time.
This is not the kind of album that has one knock-out punch. Yes, "The Calvary Cross" and "End of the Rainbow" are especially strong tracks but really this album's greatest strength is its consistency. There is not a single weak track here. Another strength is its variety of approaches and styles. "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" is a comparitively upbeat track. It is almost a rocker compared to some of the folkier arrangements. But then there are moody, haunting ballads like "The Great Valerio", which showcase Linda's exceptional voice. And some of the tracks showcase Richard's virtuosity on the electric guitar but, unlike so many mainstream seventies rock acts, never to excess.
This album will appeal to anyone who likes intelligently written and heartfelt music. It will no doubt still be around when a lot more faddish albums have dropped by the wayside.

5 out of 5 stars Two Bright Lights from N. California.......2007-01-21

RICHARD & LINDA THOMPSON are prolific artists whose talent has spanned several decades and is still going strong. They are proficient in any number of styles--folk rock, blues, Cajun, etc. Both have distinctive, appealing voices and their lyrics convey a refreshing honesty.

5 out of 5 stars The best thing I can say about this album..........2006-09-22

Even though it's been in my record collection for many years, I recently listened to it OBSESSIVELY for about a month, every single day. How many albums can provoke that sort of obsession? Every single song is a thriller, a masterpiece. Some songs (particularly Calvary Cross) grew even richer with live-performance development over the years, but that just shows what marvels they were from the start! Other songs, like "The Great Valerio" and "Poor Beggar Girl", appear so richly performed that there's simply no room left for improvement.

Additionally, the balance of Richard's twanging electric guitar, earthy acoustics and mandolins, Linda's dry unaffected alto, and clean, simple production really add weight. The whole thing feels quite natural and timeless.

Timeless. Yeah, that's the best thing I can say. Well, that, and it provokes strange obsessions.

This recording will be a revelation to those who were unlucky enough to catch the staging of Paul Scott Goodman's musical adaptation of Jay McInerney's iconic debut novel in 1999. The show turned the book's drug-fueled, nihilistic portrait of 1980s Manhattan into embarrassing mush. But apparently some thought Bright Lights, Big City was a diamond in the rough, because a studio recording has appeared six years after the production closed. And guess what? The show was worth recording. Goodman's pop-rock score is more varied and flavorful than it first sounded, proving there's something to be said for nipping and tucking. Surprisingly, the ballads and intimate numbers work a lot better than the more uptempo pieces, which still come across as a bit forced. And speaking of revelations--Eden Espinosa, playing three parts, shows a lot more range here than she does in Brooklyn and Christine Ebersole brings punchy, roaring flair to Jamie's boss Clara‹she should do more pop material like this. Kudos also to the wonderful Sherie Rene Scott, who shines in her ballad, "Kindness." Twenty years after the book came out, these lights are shining bright indeed. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Great hidden gem.......2007-03-30

I had heard a few of these songs on Broadway Max on LIVE365 internet radio and fell in love with a few tunes. After buying the album I couldn't be happier! There are great songs with deep lyrics and catchy melodies. The performances are top notch and this recording makes me wish I had seen the live production. If you liked Rent you'll enjoy this cd.

3 out of 5 stars Definitely Fun To Listen To, But Haven't We Heard This Before?.......2007-01-04

The one tragedy that will always plague "Bright Lights, Big City" from now until eternity is that it was written after "RENT;" because of this, it can and will only play second fiddle in the history books to that other, better known rock-musical from the 90s. However, if one ignores the pretty obvious typecasting ("City" Tad = "RENT" Collins, anyone?) and other technical aspects of the show, the music by itself is a gem in the recent rock-musical canon. The amazing thing that struck me about this show is that it kept the tone and the feel for each song distinct and unique while never seriously deviating from the rock/pop genre, an uncommon accomplishment even "RENT" cannot boast.

As noted by other reviewers, the cast leaves absolutely nothing to be desired as far as talent goes, even though some of the actors and actresses were given fairly weak material to work with. However, despite the weakness of the individual songs and characters (of which better breakdowns and descriptions than I could write are found elsewhere) the show as a whole is fairly strong and tight. A very good recording that shouldn't be missed by rock-musical aficionados.

3 out of 5 stars Rock Musical but R rated.......2006-10-11

Great idea, great cast. The songs wonderfully tell the story, while each song could be covered by a rock-pop band of the day. That being said my only major concern is that people buying this CD know the subject matter is more adult than most musicals. It does have a warning on it, but so does Avenue Q, and I dont feel that label is as necessary as this one. All this being said I'm not sure this musical is a glowing gem. It has its moments and I think its more than just a collectors CD, but it shouldnt be the first of a collection. It is definitly one for younger listeners who like the more modern musicals. Favorite Song: "I Hate the French"

4 out of 5 stars Great Rock Album.......2006-07-30

I have only listened to this recording two times through, but I love it. The music and lyrics are so earnest [with the exception of Odeon, which I personally just don't like and garners this recording 4/5 stars] and the real star of this recording is Sherie Rene Scott, who is given beautiful music to showcase her phenomenal voice. Props to Gavin Creel and Christine Ebersole, as well. It's a great recording to have.

3 out of 5 stars Fun musical version of book better than the film adaptation........2006-02-27

Though not of Rent caliber this musical has plenty of rousing and clever songs. Some songs are very funny like the priceless I Hate the French and some rocking tunes peppered with sex and drug references are a nice change of pace from many squeaky clean musical numbers.Maybe not Andrew Lloyd Webber caliber but still a very entertaining underrated musical.

5 out of 5 stars Rick Nelson Masters Country.......2007-03-10

The beautiful man with the beautiful voice, Rick Nelson, has done it again. This man could sing any style music and make it Award Winning.
It's too bad his life was cut short for many reasons. But,for his fans, he could have been a Country Star.
The song "You Just Can't Quit" written by him, should have and still could be a hit. No matter what kind of songs Rick Nelson sang, they were beautiful, and they all told a story.

5 out of 5 stars Great Country cds, Rick Nelson and the band are fantastic!.......2007-02-07

The harmonies are fantastic ! Rick Nelson's voice is superb and these country LPs (CDs) are as good as any Country cds I've heard. The band is great and James Burton is a music legend as of coarse is Ricky Nelson. These are must have cds if you are a Ricky Nelson fan. Rick Nelson shows on these 2 cds that he had so much talent and vision. From Teen Idol, to Country artist to Country Rock pioneer he was and is a Rock-n-Roll legend. He made his mark in country and here are the 2 cds to prove it. They are British imports and 2 cds in one so that is why they are a little more than a single cd but it is sooooo worth it. Buy it,you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Rick Does Country Justice.......2006-02-17

This 2 album CD is a natural transition from Rick's Rockabilly music of the late 50's and early 60's and a prelude to his Stone Canyon Band. Some great standard Country songs done tastefully and with plenty of heart both from Rick and James Burton, who is extrordinary on the dobro as well as the Telecaster. Rick wrote two of the songs on these albums, both of which are excellent compositions.

If your a fan of Ricks, new or old, you'll be more than glad you purchansed this CD. Rick never got the credit he deserves as most people thought he was handed his stardom from his dad through his appearance on the "Ozzie and Harriet Show", but you can tell he loved music and performing it and this CD is no exception!

5 out of 5 stars Not all of us knew Rick was such a Country singer. TOO. .......2005-08-13

Bought this CD out of sheer curiosity. Finding (okay, not surprisingly) that Rick's warm mellow voice was as well suited to Country as to Rock'n Roll. And guitar virtuoso James Burton on dobro is indeed something. Twenty-four songs, varied enough to offer new pleasant discoveries at each listening, for a long time. My personal favourites: "Take These Chains From My Heart" (where Rick sings a few lines in French!)and "Welcome To My World."

5 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR RICK FANS.......2005-02-25

These were two of my favorite albums by Rick. They really were the forerunners of the country rock movement in LA of the late 60's, alongside of the Everly's classic, "Roots" album.

Classic Burton solos on tele and dobro and Rick's vocals are in top form.
Talk about an inovator...take a listen to these landmark albums that foretold the coming of LA country rock music years before the Eagles, Ronstadt, Buffalo Springfield or anyone else.

5 out of 5 stars Great Specialist Song.......2004-12-24

Buy this EP just for the song The SPecialist and PDA. Great songs, and THe Specialist is a very long song.

5 out of 5 stars Woohoo!.......2004-03-07

Considering all the weird emo crap their putting out these days, this is a good kick back and be yourself CD.Interpols style kind of reminds of Grandaddy meets radiohead. I really like this CD and I recommend the second track from turn on the bright lights.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for any Interpol fan.......2003-04-10

The "Interpol EP" was originally issued in June, 2002 as a "preview' of their debut album "Turn on the Bright Lights". Even though 2 of the 3 tracks on the EP would wound up on the album, it nevertheless is an essential CD for any Interpol fan.

"PDA" is one of the best songs from the "Bright Lights" album. It comes with a hard-driven, yet mesmorising beat, and the last 2 min. "outro" is genius. "NYC" is the most inward looking song (don't call it a ballad!) from the album, and the one that would give the album its title. "Specialist" is the last track, and the one that makes this EP, er, "special". The song is completely in line with the dark atmosphere of the album, and similar in energy to tracks like "PDA" and "Obstacle 1". (It is also a staple on Interpol's current set list. If you have a chance to see them live, don't hesitate!) Buy all means, BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars Best new cd this year..........2002-11-07

If you're tired of the [stuff] that's being put out these days in the "music" genre, give Interpol a try. They have both a nostalgiac feel, while retaining a freshness that keeps the listener coming back for more!

4 out of 5 stars Great e.p. - great price........2002-07-27

Great e.p., for the right price. I'd pay the money just for "P.D.A." The full length CD will be released in August, but for now, buy this e.p. By the way, I can understand why people reference Joy Division when speaking of Interpol, but let me be the first to mention (at least in this forum) that these guys are the spitting aural image of the Chameleons UK. And that's a good thing.

    Album Description

Recorded throughout September and October of 2003, as Farrar criss-crossed the country with the DC-based 5-piece, Canyon, as his backing band, Stone Steel & Bright Lights offers a diverse collection of Farrar's solo career. The album features 2 new originals ("Doesn't Have to Be This Way" and "6 String Belief"), 15 songs from Farrar's 3 solo releases, as well as 2 well-chosen covers (Syd Barrett's "Lucifer Sam" and Neil Young's "Like A Hurricane). As a bonus, the album package also features an 11-song DVD with performance footage from Slim's in San Francisco. The new originals, "Doesn't Have to Be This Way" and "6 String Belief", prove to be especially timely eventhough they were written and recorded in 2003. According to Farrar, "'Doesn't Have to Be This Way' reflects the headlines in the newspapers during that period," and frames its surging protest against a "new world of shame" with a chiming piano and mournful lap steel. "6 String Belief" touches on an issue that seems equally close to the songwriter's heart - the strength of rock and roll to renew and redeem itself in moments when it becomes jaded, corrupted and bankrupt. The song, says Farrar, "deals with the idea of rebellion against the status quo in a music industry context. When corporate blitzes and payola reach a saturation point at the mainstream level, it spawns a reaction of good music - a grassroots, do-it-yourself level." He calls the song "two-thirds idealism and one third reality."

Stone, Steel & Bright Lights documents the acrobatic swings from quiet intimacy to guitar roar that typify Farrar's approach to live performance. Resisting the urge merely to regurgitate his studio recordings, Farrar, with Canyon's help, reinterprets, reinvents and offers up new material. As Stone, Steel & Bright Lights unfolds, some of the best songs of Farrar's solo career roll out of the speakers in astonishing new guises or with clever new twists in arrangement or instrumentation. This collection proves that the heart of Farrar's last three records lay not in manipulating tape but in his superb songwriting.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Solid.......2006-07-18

I feel that negative reviews are almost always an exaggeration, and it is surely the case here. Jay Farrar is the alt-country love child people seem to love to hate. But they love to hate him because they just loved Son Volt (and Uncle Tupelo) so much. That's history folks. And face it, he's talented and has the voice that hundreds of men try to emulate. This album is certainly not a clone of Son Volt's, but he's not doing Son Volt stuff here. It's a solid album, and worth having in your collection. Listen for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars From a reviewer that grew up near Farrar.......2005-10-06

There are some brilliant reviews here, and some that completely miss the point. I grew up about ten minutes away from Farrar's hometown, and I really fear some reviewers cannot understand the context from which he writes. Imagine the "rust belt", where factories have closed, people have moved away, and sprawl has crept in. You have our hometown area. The song Cahokian, which another reviewer took to task, is especially poignant to anyone familiar with the area. He speaks of the mounds, one being a HUGE ceromonial mound built by native americans which still stands today. The other, a landfill, visible from the first mound, stands across from a motor sports racetrack. The fact that Farrar recognizes this and chooses to speak on it, I believe, shows the consciousness that makes me love his music. If you like this slant, you should really check out March "16-20, 1992". This album completely forshadowed Tupelo's split, with noticable "tweedy songs" and "farrar songs", with Farrar's being of the social consciousness ilk. Please, continue to check out Farrar's solo work, Trace and Wide Swing Tremolo (not a big fan of much else son volt), and any Tupelo you can get your hands on. I should also add, quickly, some favorite songs from S,S,& BL. Please pay attention to Medicine Hat, Six String Belief, and Greenwich Time. Thanks for your time!

2 out of 5 stars Please someone tell me where else I can find this song.......2005-08-12

I have heard this whole CD and it's nothing special. One song is very good and I do wish to have it. It is the first song, "Things don't have to be this way". I do want that song but don't want to have to pay for this very ordinary CD to get it. I have not been able to find where else it is so if someone knows I would sure appreciate you pointing me towards it. Thanks.

    4 out of 5 stars A very pleasing discovery.......2005-07-30

This man's work is new to me but it's a great discovery! A previous and somewhat negative review suggested that if I liked this I'd need a lobotomy! Well, book me in for some cranial work as I think that most of this album is fantastic and the rest is very good indeed. His voice - reminiscent of early Michael Stipe - is forceful and memorable and songs like 'Feel Free', 'Make it Alright' and 'All of your might' stay long in the memory. Best of all, it's rounded off with a blistering performance of Neil Young's 'Like a hurricane'. I'm certainly going to investigate his previous work but to those who don't like this album I say, 'Damn shame'! Recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Newsflash - Farrar Loses Plot.......2005-05-08

Guess what folks - another solo disappointment from the most boring man in alt.country. Jay Farrar has completely lost it - every damn song on this record is boring, save for Cahokian, which is merely trite and re-hashed. Do not waste your money on this garbage unless you love the rest of his solo work, in which case you should have a lobotomy. Listen, dear consumer, buy the Uncle Tupelo best of and then Buy Son Volt's TRACE and Wilco's YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT. Then forget about Jay Farrar.

P.S. He is even more boring as a solo live act than on record.
