Alas!.......2006-08-22
The sorrowful news of the death of the great and legendary Ustad Bismillah Khan is a great shock not only to every Indian citizen or Muslim but to every citizen of any country who feel close to music. There is no replacing of this Maestro who passed away late Aug 2006. Another doyen of Indian classical music and passes away. We can only hope gems like these are cherished.
Shehnai Maestro Bismillah Khan is alive and well.......2001-09-28
People with no knowledge about the health and well being of popular personalities should not comment on their health or that they have passed away without being certain about it. Shehnai maestro Bismillah Khan is alive and well. He was recently awarded by the highest civilian award by the Government of India, Bharat Ratna (Indian Jewel) in 2001. Though in his eighties, he regularly practices on his shehnai and occassionally gives public performances. Lastly, I know about him as I hail from his hometown in India (Varanasi).
Ustad Bismillah Khan at the peak of his musical journey.......1999-06-07
The tour which took him to various cities around the world also brought him to Atlanta where in front of a packed house he played for about 2 hours. In the performance he displayed true artistic form by blending the classical form with the popular music of India. It was his last tour as he passed away soon after that. His music lives on when two lovers are united in the deep of the night and the sound of shenai is heard in the distance or whenever words are replaced with a parting song.

Disappointing Meeting of the Masters.......2001-02-19
Vilayat Khan and Bismillah Khan are two of the heaviest names among instrumentalists in north Indian classical music. They play live and record a double CD. They perform "ragini" Yamani which is basically a major scale plus the tritone. Vilayat plays much more than Bismillah. At times, when you haven't heard him for a long time, and then he puts the reed to his mouth and just blows a long note supporting Vilayat's chikari jingling, you almost feel sorry for him. One of Vilayat's strong points has been the variation in his playing, on a technical level - playing with overtones, different kinds of meends, bridge playing, finger tapping and all manner of string manipulation, as on his fantastic Bhairavi disc on India Archive Music. This is absent here, and combined with one of his weak points (in my opinion), his enthusiasm for major-scale type melodies, it makes for a week CD indeed. Spirits appear to have been high at the Barbican, with an assortment of thugs laying down the drone on many tampura and shenai, and playing an assortment of rattling drums. But at least in my living room, the music falls flat. These melodies leave a bland taste in my mouth. The rattling of the dholak drums is actually pretty un-precise for classical music. Oh, and Vilayat does sing.
