After the Heat
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This 1978 collaboration between Brian Eno and Cluster members Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius may sound dated in this era of digital recordings, but the music still possesses a special appeal. This experimental trio concocted 10 electronic-based compositions that focus and embellish upon repeated patterns within their layered tracks of keyboards, piano, and occasional bass and guitar. The results range from the ethereal haze of "Old Land" and the psychedelic throb of "Broken Head" to the serene keyboard musings of "Luftschloss." Eno contributes vocals or spoken word to three tracks, including the backward singing on "Tzima N'arki," a quirky slice of avant-pop that includes bass work from Can's Holger Czukay. Despite their minimalist approach to structure, Eno, Moebius, and Roedelius generate striking sounds and sonic contrasts throughout After the Heat, and one can certainly hear precursors to modern ambient, techno, and contemporary instrumentals on this diverse album. --Bryan Reesman

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

A Near-Classic.......2007-06-13
While "There's No Business Like Show Business" is not one of Hollywood's top musicals it's still worth watching. The story is simple and entertaining. Ethel Merman, Donald O'Connor, Dan Dailey and Mitzi Gaynor are, as usual, entertaining and fun. Though Johnnie Ray tries very hard he shows that he is a singer rather than an actor. Marilyn Monroe is, at best, adequate. While she has never been one of my favorite performers she usually does a better job than she does in his movie.
Superior in all ways........2007-04-11
They certainly don't make 'em like them used to, and this film is a fine example. Excellent songs, actors, story line, costumes, etc. Superb all the way.
The real star of this film!.......2006-09-05
This is a great movie with Marilyn Monroe and Ethel Merman.
However the real star of this movie is the vivacious Mitzi Gaynor! She steals every scene she is in. She is beautiful, talented, and hard to take your eyes off of!
I recommend this movie ! I also recommend " Anything Goes"
with Mitzi Gaynor. It has just been restored and the look of it is probably the best color of any DVD I own.
ONE OF THE VERY BEST MUSICALS EVER.......2006-05-29
it surpasses many an MGM extravagansa..... I`ve been thinking.... "What and WHO does this film miss? Judy? NO! I`m mad for Judy and will always be a fighter for her and Liza.... but THIS one may be the very best musical I`ve ever seen... If I ever produced or directed a film - this would be it.....
The musical score is out of this world as are the performances, set designs, choreography, costumes and art direction...
It`s a very CinemScoped film aaaaaaaaaaaaaand for the better of it:-)))))))
Marilyn deserved a better script. Her musical numbers are a joy to watch........2005-12-15
Why did Marilyn accept such a limited role as Vicky after she was a full star in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) is hard to
explain.
Yet there are things in this movie that has caught my attention.
As soon as Marilyn appears as the Hat check girl named Vicky, she mentiones that she has just finished acting in the CHERRY
ORCHARD, a Chekov play. This movie was filmed 2 years before she
joined the Actor Studio. But at this time, she was receiving
acting lessons from Michael Chekhov, nephew of Anton Chekov the
Russian playwright who wrote the Cherry Orchard. One gets the
feeling that this dialogue in the film was ¨suggested¨by Marilyn
herself. It shows the intellectual side of Marilyn.
Her comic ability does not get many scenes. There's is a comic
scene in which she plays with the pronunciation of the word
AFTER, right before she sings her sing AFTER YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT YOU DON'T WANT IT.
Her best number is HEAT WAVE. Even today it does not look dated.
Her other number LAZY is ok, where she shares the number with
Mitzy Gaynor and Dan Dailey. I felt a more glamorous number
could have been selected here.
¨You'd be surprised¨¨ was a number deleted from the film, but it is found in many Marilyn Monroe CDs .¨In Donald O'Connor's song
A MAN CHASES A GIRL Marilyn provides a background voice. This
song was later recorded by Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds and
it became a hit.
Marilyn deserved a more comic role in this film. Walter Lang did
not know how to make good use of Marilyn's humorous ability. In
her next film, the SEVEN YEAR ITCH, Billy Wilder got a tremendous performance out of Marilyn.

'Pseudo-intellectual, pullover and polytechnic radical fringers'.......2007-06-19
I've been a fan of Brian Eno for some time now. I like him because he gets put in the same egg-head, pseudo-intellectual category as Howard Devoto, when in fact the music he makes is simplicity itself.
He's tricky for sure, and that's part of his (their) problem. I wanted to read the sleeve of this album before I reviewed it, and after a good few minutes searching, I found it under a piece of paper which looked far too small to have a cd hidden under it. That's the trickiness of Brian Eno I thought.....
`After the Heat' sees him in fine collaboration with two other similarly inclined old coves: Moebius and Roedelius who I've never heard of. (Checks sleeve, no info, GREAT!) They must be like-minded, only they look a bit foreign to me. A bit, God help us, European. The evil influences of these agents of change, fresh from the artistic killing fields of Belgium and Luxembourg are clear to hear on dear old Brian. Far from experimenting with 15 minute `soundscapes' (splutter!), he woke up next morning and found he'd (almost) made a pop lp.
Ok, it's not one that would worry George Michael(though it should!), and hardly have the Garry Bushells of this world running for cover, but it's rather nifty nevertheless. It carves out it's own little niche, its as if it knows where it belongs, where it sits in the scheme of things. Low key, but this has real power, proper depth, something that would please and tease a Radio 1 listener. A couple on here would make solid singles, genuine catchy. Two spins and your wretched correspondent was well and truly hooked.
Boffin Eno does have a bit of an indulgence here and there (and you just KNOW it's him and not the other two) he sings one `song' backwards, on another, he blows raspberries, and uses this rather vulgar noise as an instrument, (and all this years before those talentless no-hopers started beat-boxing) just so's we know he still means business(God help those airports), and is still anti-compromise, still DEADLY serious.
I don't and wont buy that. A dyed-in-the-wool misery wouldn't be able to make music as warm, open and down-right accessible as this. His music is our direct route through Brian Eno's looking glass. One side, murky and misty, but on the true side, colour and light and beauty. But beware the gathering storm.
The producer's called Plank! And no , I'm not making it up. He's one of Eno's mates for sure, but where do they find these people? The Plank novelty factor alone means you should buy this cd. Imagine if, after hearing that, you didn't!
Eno, Moebius and Roedelius ( ok, lets give the other two some credit, but who are they!?) have got so many great pop ideas their collective brain must hurt. Don't be fooled by the pigeon-holing, there really is something here for most people. Just open your minds and they'll be in....forever.
I didn't come on here to defend Brian Eno from his detractors(and they ARE legion), but I seem to have done just that. It's ok. He is, after all, at least to my mind, a musical madman, albeit a quiet, mild mannered, wine sipping one.
My absolutely favourite kind.
Great stuff by Eno and some krautrock pioneers.......2007-01-31
This is a very nice set that has aged really well. I owned it on vinyl and I must say that this remastered edition is very nicely produced with an informative booklet inside even. This is indispensable for fans of Eno and Cluster.
Before and After Heat.......2006-10-27
For those who don't warm to Eno's ambient recordings and whose interest ended with Before and After Science, the lesser-known Old Land, recorded in collaboration with the German group Cluster, offered some final enjoyable moments. The pieces were shorter and recognizably melodic, albeit very idiosyncratic. There was nothing resembling a pop tune and no up-tempo rocker, but there were echoes of both the oddly skewed and quiet, introspective tunes from Another Green World and Before and After Science. There were even three vocal pieces (Eno's last for many years)- one sung, one recited, and one sung and played backwards. This album was reissued on CD on the Relativity label back in 1986 with lackluster sound quality.
After the Heat, issued on the Water label, is a sonic delight, equal to the Astralwerks reissues of Eno's solo recording. The sound is clear, sharp, and displays a full dimension. However, After the Heat is not exactly a reissue of Old Land. Not only is the title different and the cover art similar but different, and the recording credited to Eno Moebius Roedelius instead of Cluster & Brian Eno (a distinction without a difference), but the ten-track Old Land and the nine-track After the Heat have only four tracks in common (including the three vocal tracks). The remaining tracks are from the Eno & Cluster album (their first collaboration), and the missing tracks from Old Land have been shuffled over to what is currently being offered as Cluster & Eno. I don't have any argument with the quality of any of the music, though the vocal tracks are the ones I like the best- but you should be aware that if you're replacing an old album or CD you may not be getting what you expected.
A good record, but pales compared to "Cluster & Eno"........2005-12-21
"After the Heat" is the second collaboration between ambient pioneer Brian Eno and electronic experimentalists Cluster (Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius). While their first collaboration (released as "Cluster & Eno) is simply astonishing, this album, while quite an enjoyable listen, is a bit more pedestrian.
All of the tracks are based on basically the same sort of framework-- piano or keyboard lines tend to form the core of each piece with arpeggiated keyboards, swirling hazes, and oddly effected guitars contributing to the ambience of the whole thing. On three tracks, Eno adds a vocal. By and large, the whole thing works quite effectively ("Tzima N'Arki", featuring a bass performance by Holgar Czukay, the simply lovely "The Shade"), but at times it gets a bit tired (Base & Apex", "Oil"), and occasionally you find yourself wishing they'd've left the simply beautiful piano melodies alone rather then adorning them with additional keyboards ("Luftschloss"). One thing that is consistent is that the vocal tracks are fantastic-- I don't know if it's having an additional focus or if they seemed particularly inspired when a vocal was present, I suspect the latter. Take "Broken Head", Eno rambles an odd half-spoken vocal on top of a driving rhythm and eventually gives way to a noisy guitar lead that, while structurally unimpressive, is nonetheless captivating.
I'm not overly familiar with previous issues of this album (I had borrowed a copy from a friend but was never able to get my own copy), so I can't readily compare the sound on this one to the older issues, but it certainly is crisp, clean, and allows the subtleties of the music (of which there are many to really come forth). The liner notes provide a discussion of the music and of each of the tracks. Their first collaboration was somewhat more enjoyable then this, but "After the Heat" is well worthwhile for the already initiated.

--Bryan Reesman

listen to it (but in the right way).......2006-12-07
you'll have to listen to this record with the appropriate song following order , that is the one of the original vinyl, that is:
1) oil
2)foreign affairs
3) luftschloss
4)the shade
5)old land
6) base & apex
7) light arms
8) broken head
9)the belldog
10) t'zima narki ( lyrics of king'slead hat sung backwards)
I wonder why they modified it.....it was really perfect in the original version
Another one of the "Berlin Five".......2002-12-12
As one reviewer said, "This was before it's time in 1978, and it's before it's time now". My sentiments exactly. I don't know how they're doing what they are, but somehow C+E create some of the weirdest soundscapes and most bizarre rythmic structures I've ever heard. Having pushed the envolope of synthesizer-based music as far as it would go with "C+E" from the previous year, they now push it even farther, going COMPLETELY off the edge. Get a load of "Oil" or "Broken Head" or "Foriegn Affairs" to hear what I mean. And then there's "T'zima narki", featuring Holger Czukay on bass and Eno's backwards vocals. (I played this song for a friend once and he said, "What is that, swedish?")
And how about the titles? "Oil"? "Base and Apex"? "Broken Head"?? I doubt if Eno ever used hallucinogenic drugs, but this release makes me wonder.
As anyone who has been reading my other reviews knows, I'm really big on the "Berlin Five" idea. (read my review of "C+E" for an explanation). One thing: How come Bowie wasn't on any of the Cluster albums, or Cluster on any of the Bowie albums? I know that they weren't all made at the same time, but it would have been interesting to hear some cross-artistry like that.

This is the second and final lp for Eno and the German synth duo Cluster, and more so than "Cluster and Eno," this lp is a much more cohesive, yet no less strange, album.
Eno tends to be the more dominant force on this recording, going so far as singing on a few of these tracks, and the whole lp has a kind of "Before and After Science" feel to it, which is certainly not a bad thing.
Cluster would go on to make excellent lps after this point (not that they hadn't to that point), taking what they gained from Eno and putting it to good use. Eno would also take much from these meetings, and those influences do pop up on several lps he made after this one.
Both Eno and Cluster lps are essential listening and belong in your cd collection.
Approach this with care.......2000-02-03
All good Eno fans should buy this album-but, a word of warning: DO NOT buy this album if you've never listened to Eno before. This is the most DEPRESSING Eno album I've heard, especially "Broken Head". Strange to say, that's what makes it so good. Written in Conny Planck's studio which had a view of the berlin wall. Ouch. Sad.
The other 1/2 of..........2000-01-28
This is the companion work to "Cluster and Eno", and really should be taken in along with that wonderful work for maximum impact. Not that the absence of its tracks diminishes this release any, as this is definitely the stronger of the two albums. Cluster, at this point in time, was well into their near-classical approach to ambience, and pairing this with Eno's full-flowered approaches to atmospherics and complex arranging creates a masterpiece recording that has only improved with time. Description of what's going on in here is rather hard; it should just be sufficient to say that you should buy this CD if you have even the slightest interest in any of these artists, in ambient music, or electronics. An aside note: this was Eno's last lyrical effort for many years; he only found voice again on his collaboration with John Cale, "Wrong Way Up", over a decade later. When one listens to "The Belldog", though, it's clear why...what _does_ one sing about after creating such a work? A critical, essential album.

As good as the contemporary wind band can get. Craig Kirchhoff works his magic again by compiling a collection of new music which the entire instrumental music community can take part. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
