5 out of 5 stars Weird Al's Best Album.......2007-06-17

WEird Al is possibly the greatest comedic recording artist of all time, certainly the best of my generation. This is easily his best, most well crafted album of his long career because he avoids silly polka medleys, etc instead this is a straight album parodying hit MTV songs. The lyrics are twisted in just the right way and the music cloned as to be out and out hilarious. This is Al's first Grammy winning album. For example, Taco Grande is a parody of Rico Suarve and The White Stuff is a parody of The Right Stuff. Al is serious about being funny on this album.

5 out of 5 stars "Taco Grande" is the best.......2006-10-29

There are some hilarious songs on this CD. "Taco Grande" is definitely my favorite, but "Lasagna" and "The White Stuff" will have you rolling on the floor in laughter as well.

Some of the songs on "The Food Album" are on other Weird Al CDs, so make sure that you don't already have all of the songs before you buy this CD.

It's amazing how Al can make his songs sound so much like the songs he parodies. You have to listen to the CD quite a few times before you notice all of the hysterical lyrics. Some people think Weird Al is tacky, but come on--he's guaranteed to put a smile on your face!

5 out of 5 stars A nicely picked bunch of songs based on a common theme.......2005-09-04

Wierd Al's Food compilation features ten of his songs about food spanning from his 1983 self-titled debut to his 7th album, 1992's Off The Deep End. It's true that there is one big problem: it is missing one song, "Girls Just Want To Have Lunch" (a parody of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" from album Dare To Be Stupid). But other than that, the songs are well picked, and they are:

1. Fat (parody of Michael Jackson's "Bad" from album Even Worse)-5/5

2. Lasagna (parody of Los Lobos' "La Bamba" from album Even Worse)-4.5

3. Addicted to Spuds (parody of Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love from album Polka Party!)-5

4. I Love Rocky Road (parody of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'N' Roll" from album "Weird Al" Yankovic)-5

5. Spam (parody of "Stand" by REM from album UHF-Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and Other Stuff)-3.5

6. Eat It (parody of Michael Jackson's "Beat It" from album In 3-D)-5

7. The White Stuff (Parody of New Kids on the Block's "The Right Stuff" from album Off The Deep End)-4.5

8. My Bologna (Parody of the Knack's "My Sharona" from album "Wierd Al" Yankovic)-4

9. Taco Grande (Parody of Gerardo's "Rico Suave" from album Off The Deep End)-5

10. Theme From Rocky XIII (Parody of Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" from album In 3-D)-5

Notably, all these are parodies. Also, if Weird Al made an updated version of the Food album, it would no doubt contain all of these tracks, as well as these additional tracks (in addition to "Girls Just Want To Have Lunch"):

1. Livin' In The Fridge (Parody of Aerosmith's "Living on the Edge" from album Alapalooza)
2. Waffle King (Original from album Alapalooza)
3. Cavity Search (Parody of U2's "Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me" from album Bad Hair Day)
4. Grapefruit Diet (Parody of the Cherry Poppin' Daddies' "Zoot Suit Riot" from album "Running With Scissors")

These would make a great addition to his food compilation. However, it's a good compilation as it is and is a nice touch to his library. The TV album could also be updated, and I'll get to that next.

3 out of 5 stars The Food Album.......2005-04-08

Weird Al Yonkavic "The Food Album"

This album is by Weird Al. He is a very interesting person with a music style to fit his name. Because his music styles his every kind you could want. I have enjoyed listening to his music for several years now and I still find I like it. Most his of his songs are remake of other people's songs but he changes the lyrics and adds a new funk to them. There is, however, no real history behind his album titles. Like this one is called the Food Album because every song on here is about food. He tries to distort every song he can so don't be surprised if one of your favorite songs become weird. The price on amazon.com is 10.99 but if pay a little more you get his other album " Bad Hair Day" as well. He isn't really that new. He has been around for about 18 years.
There seems to be a lot of evolution in his CDs because none of them are alike, except, that there weird. I wasn't really surprised to find him with an album all about food because he has many albums that make no sense. This one is like a lot of his albums... WEIRD!!! It works for certain people but other won't really like it. It makes fun of some peoples favorite songs so they dong really like what Weird Al sings.
Once you listen to he music you get kind of attached to it. First you here some similar beat. Then you find that you like his songs. Most of his tracks on this CD are good. But I think the best ones on this album are: Spam, The Rye or the Kaiser, The White Stuff, Just Eat It, and Taco Grande. I these are good because they copper of some older songs, but give them new meaning. As far as I know there are no hidden tracks.
But yes even though these songs are weird they can be compared to the people who originally sang them. My overall rating would have to be a 3.5 out of 5. You will dislike this if you hate stupid songs about nothing, but like them if you don't. Fans will be glad because now there is a whole CD about food. Well I like it and I hope you do too.

5 out of 5 stars Experimental Does Not Mean Bad.......2006-11-26

This album may be a bit too experimental for some reviewers however, to me, this is a great album that provides a little more diversity than the normal status-quo Connells album - A great addition to any CD collection.

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad album...just bad by Connells standards !.......2006-08-14

OK, so this is by no means the best Connells album...infact, its probably their weakest, but the one star reviews are totally unjustified. When i first heard this I thought it was amazing, however that was only because the first four songs...Maybe, Start, Fifth Fret and the brilliant Just Like That were so good...however I have to admit that after this the album does kind of go downhill...not even downhill...just nowhere, its almost like a collection of OK b-sides of varying styles - Adjectives being a good example. Hang On kind of gets your hopes up again but after that, to be honest there isnt a lot to get excited about. Individualy most of the other songs are OK but its miles away from Ring or Still Life - the album really loses its structure towards the end.

Anyway as I finish this review I'm still not sure to give it three stars or four...I give it 4 because so many other people have been so hasty with one star reviews ! Its so cheap second hand, just buy it for the first 4 songs, but buy the earlier stuff first !

3 out of 5 stars It's not really that bad........2005-09-05

Well, it's obvious from the reviews on here that this is an album that really divides people. It seems like you either love it or hate it. Now, I have been a fan of The Connells for a long time and own almost everything they've ever put out, but that doesn't mean I can't be objective. I wouldn't give this a 5 star rating, but I wouldn't say it deserves 1 star, either.

I think that the reason "Weird Food & Devastation" gets ripped apart by so many reviewers is that it is a change of sound for the band. The guitar sound is more raw than on other albums, the vocals are more subdued and there is a bleakness that seems to hang over most of the songs. These are not necessarily bad things, though. It just adds an edge to it. This is not a happy album. To me, this is a good album to throw on when it's damp and overcast outside or when you are depressed and angry late at night.

Now, there has been a lot of talk about the lack of catchy melodies. Well, all I know is that there are at least 4 or 5 songs on here that can easily get stuck in my head for days. "Maybe", the leadoff track is a good example. I find it insanely catchy. Also "Start", "Adjective Song", and "Hang On" are all memorable if you ask me.

What I'm trying to say is that even though it might not be as good as some of their other work(I will concede that the lyrics can be a bit weak in spots), it isn't as bad as it is made out to be. If this is the worst album The Connells ever put out, then they have nothing to be ashamed of.

1 out of 5 stars not so good........2003-12-14

Recently, I ran across a CD by George Huntley (Brain Junk), and took a chance on it. Many of the $.50 used bargain bin CDs I have run across were worth a single listen and then discarded, but "Brain Junk" was actually a pleasant surprise, and I found myself listening to it many times. A few weeks later, I read that George Huntley was in the band "The Connells", and I remembered that the same store had several used CDs by them ranging in price from $.50 to $.99, so I bought "New Boy", "Still Life", and this album, "Weird Food and Devastation". While I somewhat enjoyed "New Boy", and there was some decent material on "Still Life", this CD (Weird Food..) was a complete and total dud. I have listened to it 3 times now to give it a fair chance and see if it grew on me or if there was a song or two that I overlooked, but there is really nothing here that I am impressed with at all. All of the songs are bland, undistinguished and unimaginative. I noticed at the store I bought this CD at that the regular price for it new was $18.99, and I am just thankful that I didn't pay that for it. For $.50 it was worth a listen.

1 out of 5 stars Get Real People!.......2003-06-22

When I see that several people have actually given this album a five star rating I have to laugh. Amazon customers tend to give out five star ratings like candy at Halloween, failing to realize that in the history of recorded music very few albums, maybe 5 or 6 dozen tops, deserve such a rare honor. This meandering mess of a record isn't even anywhere close.

I've always assumed that The Connells, a band I really like, delivered this album as a method of payback for their label TVT. TVT had refused to let The Connells out of their contract so that a bigger label could release the band's previous album "Ring" (a real gem of a record). A bigger label could have given the album the type of promotion push that could have made it the colossal hit it deserved to be. As a result The Connells missed out on their chance at the big time.

So when payback time rolled around the band delivered this dud of an album to TVT. Perhaps they were hoping the label would reject it and release them from their contract, or maybe they wanted to label to released the album and have TVT lose their shirt when it tanked commercially. Who knows? In any case this is hands down the most forgettable album in The Connell's catalog.

I owned this CD for a good year and a half after its release, and I gave it repeated listens determined to find anything memorable since I assumed that it was one of those subtle albums that took repeated listens to really pick up on its charms. No luck. I finally took it to a used CD store and used it as a down payment of a CD I like much more. Eventually, somebody bought that copy...and I am sure to this day that they are fuming at how they got ripped off.

Still, don't take my word for it. As I type this review I see that there are currently 122 used copies of this CD being sold here at Amazon starting at a mere penny. Doesn't that tell you something?
