Two years in the making, This Desert Life is the kind of collection that will please the Counting Crows faithful and leave doubters unconverted. Adam Duritz's recognizably emotive vocals and the group's classic-rock stylings remain in the fore as the Crows stick near the nest with their third studio outing. The Mellencamp-like opener, "Hanginaround," is one of the strongest tunes here, thanks to its laid-back passion and catchy piano and percussive elements. The familiar feeling "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" is another lively offering, but at nearly eight minutes it's too long. The emotional, Van Morrison-like lament "All My Friends" feels self-pitying, while the balance of the album is simply bland. Not Their Best But A Solid Effort.......2006-12-20
For Counting Crows third album the band starts off with a song that sounds like it was written specifically to receive radio airplay. Although the song "Hangingaround" was a pretty big hit, it is really significantly different from what Counting Crows are known for and just sounds to me like a kowtow to record industry pressure. I really never liked the song much at all with it's "we've got to have a hit" vibe. After that though things improve immensely with the almost 8 minute "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" and "Amy Hit The Atmosphere" both of which are great songs. The rest of the album is up and down. Overall it is a mellower release than "Recovering the Satellites" as many of the songs are moody and reflective. Other highlights include "All My Friends And Lovers", and "Colorblind". This is probably the weakest of the Crow studio discs up to this point, but it is still a strong album for the most part.
Crows Are Entertaining.......2006-06-13
THIS DESERT LIFE is an interesting piece of work. Melodies, harmonies, and lyrics are the album's standing out traits. Counting Crows' piano player has a very interesting take on how to use the instrument to achieve unique musical sounds. The Pop/Rock group consists of guitars, basses, drums, keyboards, strings, and percussion. These instruments are used to their full extent to create an overall good Pop/Rock album.

This CD is by far my favorite Counting Crows recording. It has a great mix of music styles that are upbeat and fun. It is a must have for any Counting Crows fan.
Classic Crows.......2005-09-19
I am a huge fan of Counting Crows. While this album may not be as strong or popular as "August and Everything After," few album are, this is still a very good album. My personal favorite track is "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby." If you like 90s rock or Counting Crows then you are in for a treat with this album.
For those who haven't heard.......2005-06-01
If this is your first time with the Crows, you might want to check out Films About Ghosts first. That said, this was actually the first Crows CD I bought. My roommate in college my freshman year used to play Mrs. Potter's Lullaby and I immediately loved it. It wasn't until a year later that I heard some other tracks, and I knew this whole disc had to be a winner. When I purchased it, it did not disappoint. Here is my review.
1. Hanginaround: Great bouncy radio single to start the album off with. I love the guitar riff. Basic song about hanging around a small town being a bum. Basically what I do, lol.
2. Mrs. Potter's Lullaby: In my opinion, the best song on the album. I love the piano melody, the thought-provoking lyrics which go on for the song's entire 7 minutes and 44 seconds with no instrumental breaks. This always brings me to tears. This would appear to be about a movie star whom a messed-up man admires from afar. Judge for yourself.
3. Amy Hit the Atmosphere: A nice one, I like the electric sitar intro, undoubtedly bassist Matt Malley's influence. It's about the title girl who leaves a bad place and the singer who wishes he could take the same way out. A great song to waltz to, as it's in 3/4 time. If you can waltz, that is.
4. Four Days: Probably the most underrated song on the album. Has a different feel than the rest of the material. It's hard to explain. Not much else to say.
5. All My Friends: Good lyrics, nice vocals, pretty string arrangement. "I'm still looking for a girl".
6. High Life: No, not the beer. I have gotten a lot of positive comments about the lyrics to this song. They are very complex and pretty at the same time. I find this song stuck in my head a lot. Good long one, too.
7. Colorblind: As beautiful a piano ballad as there ever was. It was featured on the soundtrack to "Cruel Intentions", which is a sucky movie. Nonetheless, I am moved to tears from time to time. This is probably one of the Crows' most popular songs.
8. I Wish I Was a Girl: This one really has to be heard to be believed. But I can empathize with the lyrics. Too much static in my head keeps me from sleeping sometimes.
9. Speedway: Similar to Walkaways from "Recovering the Satellites", in that it is a song about leaving. A slow, quiet number, it prepares you for the buildup of the grand finale that is track 10.
10. St. Robinson in His Cadillac Dream: An epic of a song, barely containing itself within its 5 minutes length. Starts off with mandolins, which is a treat. A great tale about a man whose dreams become bigger than he can handle. Well worth a listen, if only for the ending where Adam reaches his high note amid a chorus of double-tracked and backing vocals. Pure Heaven. It will make you want to get into a car and drive.
10.5: Yes, there is a hidden track. Keep listening after St. Robinson ends. I will tell you that it's called Kid Things, and it's pretty funny. That is all. Enjoy!

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

A Spectrum of Romance in American Musical Composition.......2006-01-15
Often American music is thought to be jaunty, combative, or tragic in content, especially when it comes to songs/lieder for the classical repertoire. This engaging CD takes umbrage with that misconception and in presenting some twenty-eight songs by various composers clearly identifies the romantic side of American composers.
Here are songs well known and not so well known by familiar and not so familiar composers, and in the hands of tenor Robert White and pianist Samuel Sanders they all come across as important. Included are rarities by composers such as Amy Beach, Theodor Chanler, Isabelle Firestone, Eric Ewazen, Albert Hay Malotte, Marc Marder, John Musto and Richard Hageman, with popular composers Rudolf Friml and Sigmund Romberg, along with the greats: Ives, Schuman, Hindemith, Barber, Thomson, Korngold, Copland. Rorem, Bolcom, Corigliano, and Griffes. It is a huge spectrum of work and while some are less successful than other, they all are given respectful and loving renditions by White and Sanders. It is great fun to hear Firestone's famous 'If I could tell you' that opened the Voice of Firestone for so many years along side Samuel Barber's gorgeous 'Sure on this shining night' and Aaron Copland's settings of Emily Dickinson's poems.
This a rare treat for connoisseurs of lieder and for lovers of beautiful songs. Recommended. Grady Harp, January 06
a rare gem of a CD.......2002-07-08
Sure On This Shining Night is not my usual musical cup of tea...yet, it has become one of my favorite CDs. This collection of American Romantic songs has burrowed its way into my heart.
There is a universality to the longing involved in Romanticism. These songs capture this feeling perfectly. From the first song to the last, these songs do one thing perfectly: evoke an emotional response.
This is due in no short measure to the wonderful performance Robert White gives. Rather than being merely technically accurate, White actually gives each of these songs a life of their own. He achieves this effect by getting inside not only the words, but the feelings involved.
Some of the highlights for me are: the lovely and memorable "Rose Marie," Ewazen's setting of Blake's "The Tiger," a moving version of "The Lord's Prayer" and the haunting "Never More Will the Wind."
Samuel Sanders is a worthy musical companion to White. His playing is reciprocally lovely and introspective. The notes are extensive and informative as well.
Even though it may be an acquired taste in our postmodern age, I give Sure On This Shining Night my full recommendation.
