Album Description

Straylight Run is made up of sibling frontpeople John and Michelle Nolan who both sing, write, and play guitar and piano. They are joined by bassist Shaun Cooper and drummer Will Noon. There's no doubting the intelligent design of their gloriously adventurous off-kilter pop and the existential underpinnings of their lyrics.

Asked about "Soon We'll Be Living in the Future," the emotionally charged first single off Straylight Run's forthcoming album, The Needles The Space, John confides: "I'm really happy with how that song turned out because I was finally able to put a finger on a feeling I have about living and dying. It's a frustrating and terrifying experience living with the full knowledge that at any point in any day you could die, and what would your life have meant? Everything you're doing - what does it actually mean in the context of your life as a whole? It's something I probably think about too much. It's not a good idea to be too thoughtful about such things."

"The Miracle That Never Came," meanwhile, is perhaps an even more distinctive example of Straylight's brand of thinking-man's pop. It flies out of the starting gate without warning, galloping along on Shaun's insistent bass line, Will's four-four beat and Michelle's fevered vocal, the unexpected ring of glockenspiel spurring it further. Just as the see-sawing melody has lodged itself intractably in your cerebellum, "Miracle" gives way to a swooning, two-tempo waltz bridge that finds Michelle singing, "Oh, look what I've done here/ Let these thoughts creep in/ Let them seep right in." Another standout, the lovely, accordion-laced "The Words We Say," begins with "We'll wait in line for most our lives."

Says John of Straylight Run's evolving sound, which he concedes is difficult to pigeonhole: "I love pop music; I love hearing a well-written pop song. And I like a lot of music that's experimental and weird. I'm always looking for ways to take a pop song and rearrange it into something interesting and fresh and original." Michelle remarks: "We're very lucky because our fans seem to be open to whatever we do. That gives us the freedom to explore any idea we have."

New Straylight Run.......2007-07-19

Out with the old and in with the new, kind of. I love how Straylight Run experimented with a completely new and different sound in songs like "Still Alone," however managed to keep that old honest and passionate sound on tracks like "Buttoned Down". Its a good buy, but I would suggest buying it on iTunes so you get the extra tracks. ("Waiting on the Weekend"- is worth it) Also, I would suggest getting the other Straylight Run album because they're not the type of band that ditches their old songs, and they still perform a lot of them in concert.

Nothing short of amazing.......2007-07-17

I have been waiting for the release of "The Needles The Space" for a long time now and it was definitely worth the wait. I haven't stopped listening to it since I bought it.

When I first listened to it I noticed that it was very different from their previous cd, not in a bad way though. This cd is an example of how much they have matured musically. The harmonies of both John and Michelle are absolutely beautiful. Everything from the lyrics to the music were put together wonderfully. I am proud to have this cd in my collection.

You surely won't regret buying this cd.

straylight RUN TO THE STORE AND BUY THIS!.......2007-07-09

Straylight Run...a band that has more than outdone themselves with this, their latest record. Building upon the male/female vocal mixtures of their previous 2 efforts, they take the diversity to a whole new level, with John Nolan and Michelle DaRosa sharing roughly equal time on vocals. And where as on the last 2 albums, wasn't a huge fan of Michelle's vocal stylings, she left me in awe with her work on this one, often overshadowing John's songs with her own.

The album is very mellow, as someone mentioned in another review, but it will get your toes tappin'. The lyrics, also as another reviewer mentioned, have grown in maturity and overall quality.

The instrumentation on the album is pretty much flawless. They've hit a homerun by adding instruments such as Clarinet, Trombone, Trumpet, and Mandolin to the forefront on a few songs. And yes, It works VERY WELL.

This is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful, artistic, catchy, and original albums I've heard in quite a while. Possibly the best rock/pop album since Radiohead's PABLO HONEY.

AMAZING........2007-07-05

This CD has been on repeat in my car ever since I bought it. They have such a unique sound and they're music consistently gets better and better. Each song sounds different from the last, with John Nolan or Michelle DaRosa singing main vocals on each song. The melodies are very catchy, some mainly piano and others mainly with acoustic guitar. I would recommend this CD to any lover of rock, indie, or even folk music. It is easy for anyone to love, really.

I was so excited for the arrival of this cd that I pre-orded it months in advance, and this cd after all the wait did not let me down. My favorite thing about this album is the balence between John and Michelle, you can tell that they are related because their voices carry one another in perfect harmony. Out of all of Straylight Run's album, this is by far the superior one. The use of numerous unique instruments on this album is unprecidented by any album I have heard in this genre in ages. My favorite songs on this album are Soon we'll be living in the future, and Take it to Manhattan. Buy this album and you will surely will not be disapointed!

Band on the Run should have been a disaster. Two of Wings' original members quit in a huff just before its production. The whimsical decision to record in Lagos, Nigeria, became a nightmare when McCartney and company found themselves in a decaying studio, then had many of the project's demos stolen by armed bandits. Despite these hardships--perhaps because of them--Band on the Run remains the most focused and consistently satisfying record of McCartney's wildly uneven post-Beatles career. This mini box set contains the original album, a well-written booklet by Mark Lewisohn, and a bonus disc featuring outtake snippets and interviews with all the album's participants (including its cover crew, which includes actors James Coburn and Christopher Lee) and Dustin Hoffman, who recounts how he spurred McCartney to spontaneously write "Picasso's Last Words" on a dare. This second disc would make a fine radio show; it comes up short where it matters most--in music. Time spent detailing the album-cover photo session could have been more gratifyingly devoted to more contemporary outtakes (much of the bonus Band material is culled from live performances from as recently as the mid '90s; perhaps McCartney wants us to know how important the record has been to him over the years) or to a pair of single B-sides, which are curiously absent here. --Jerry McCulley

Classic Early 70's Rock Album.......2007-05-05

The best and most successful Rock album Paul McCartney, with Wings released. It is a classic rock album worthy of its praise, its boldness and McCartney was back with a bang with an emphatic message to the music world.

1. Band on the Run - A classic.

2. Jet - A classic. What a one-two punch to kick of the album?

3. Bluebird - Beautiful harmonies. Underrated.

4. Mrs. Vandebilt - A silly story song made good by Paul's great vocals and great musicianship of his trio.

5. Let Me Roll It - Remains a concert staple and fan favourite. This song is best performed live, the studio version is a weaker immitation of the real thing, which is live baby.

6. Mamunia - The melody master near his best, but many people don't know this song, it is a pleasure to listen to. Macca's voice is at its clearest, the band harmonises in peak form.

7. No Words - Has a Beatles/Badfinger sound to it. Paul and Denny harmonising is really something to hear.

8. Helen Wheels - A fun and catchy rocker, nothing earth shaking.

9. Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me) - Macca's musical response to a Dustin Hoffman challange. Its a great song, I love the drunken feel to the music, great engineering.

10. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five - A pulsating climax to the album, most of Pauls best albums finish with a bang.

One Of The Finest Rock Albums Ever Made, No Question About It........2007-03-04

By 1974, Paul McCartney's solo career had an interesting conflict associated with it. He scored big with his first few solo albums, scoring big with hit singles like "Another Day", "Live And Let Die" and "My Love". His loyal fanbase was broader than ever.

However, Paul and his newly formed band Wings were ripped apart by music critics who felt John and George's solo work was far more innovative and overall worth owning. Paul decided to put an end to this criticism. He, along with his wife Linda and his fellow Wings bandmates, jetted down to Legolas in Africa to record what would become one of the best rock albums ever made. After several months that resulted in various technical problems as well as a mugging, "Band On The Run" was released.

"Band On The Run" is, to put it in simple terms, an awesome album. This is Paul at his best. This the Paul we all know and love. He is loose, focused and clearly enjoying himself along with the rest of the band. The album opens with the classic title track, which starts off as a slow, kind of whiny number, then picks up the pace a bit as an ominous revnge fantasy, then, out of nowhere, the horns flair up as if it were some sort of musical exodus, you can feel the rain exploding with a mighty crash drenching you. It's one of the most stunning musical moments on record.

From here on in, the album never lets up. "Jet" is a McCartney classic and a concert staple. A fast paced, wild rocker with a blast your throat out chorus and classic riff. "Helen Wheels" is a crazed bulldozer of a number that will blow your speakers out if played too loudly. This is Paul at his most raucous. "Let Me Roll It" is a blueslier number, a great love song that remains a concert showstopper. "Bluebird" and the lovely "Mamunia" provide the more mellow moments here, but do not drag down the album at all. The vitriolic "No Words" is a raw, gutsy ballad with some of Paul's most cynical and best lyrics ever. "Picasso's Last Words" is a three part chronicling of the last hours before the passing of the famous artist, complete with a singalong chorus and French interlude. The closing "Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five" is an out and out musical extravaganza complete with intense instrumental breaks and some fine piano work by Sir Paul. The one clunker is "Mrs. Vanderbilt", and even that's fine for what it is.

Disc 2 is the real treat. You get Paul performing various renditions of certain tracks (including several different variations of the title track), live performances, and tour rehearsals (including a blistering version of "Jet). The interviews detailing the arduous but enjoyable recording process is a thrill. To hear Paul as well as people like Geoff Edwards, Christopher Lee, James Coburn and many others give their input. The most entertaining interview by far comes from none other than a man who is to cinema what Paul is to music, the legendary Dustin Hoffman, whose fantastic detailing of his influence on "Picasso's Last Words" is a joy to listen to. Paul and Dustin should collaborate more often.

The booklet and photo spread are excellent bonuses, and this is an album all music fans need to have.

As far as Paul McCartney's career away from The Beatles was, this was good it gets. The cd is great from Top to Bottom and a classic rock cd and deserves a spot in any classic rock collection. Truth be known when I was much younger 17; me and my friend would have a contest who could roll one the best before Paul could say Let Me Roll It in my most favorite tune on the cd, but it was an album back then.

Few albums are as fueled by hope, possibility, and the lure of the open road as Born to Run, a virtual concept album about small-town Jerseyites in search of a better life via hot-rodding out on the turnpike, scoring some small-time hustle, or blowing out of town altogether, either across the river to New York City or west for parts unknown. Songs like "Jungleland," "Thunder Road," "Backstreets," and the title track are epic productions, both sonically and lyrically, borrowing from Phil Spector, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, and West Side Story. When Born to Run was released in 1975, it earned then-unknown Springsteen the rare honor of simultaneous covers on both Time and Newsweek. I was not fortunate to hear this album back in the 70's (I am 13), but i know great rock when i hear it. From tracks 1-8, the boss reminds us WHY he's the boss.

1. Thunder road:

As one reviewer said, its lyrically the best opining on any rock song.

"The screen door slams, Marys dress sways.
Like a vision she dances across the porch, as the radio plays.
Roy Orbison's singin for the lonely, hey thats me and I want you only.
Don't turn me home again, i just cant face myself alone again."

The song, like the whole album in general, speaks of wanting to get the hell out of jersey with Mary, and if the run, they can do it.
"I know its late, but we can make it (the train outa there) if we run."

2. Tenth Avenue

Again, the opining lines are pure genius

"Tear drops on the city, Bad Scooter (same initials as bruce springsteen) surchin, for his groove.
Seems like the whole worlds walkin pretty, and you can't find no room to move."

This song is about the forming of the E street band
B.S, is down and out, till the big man (Clarence, the saxophonist) comes and "joins the band". The song is, rocky, jazzy, and full of life.

3. Night

No need for a quote
Anyone who works late at night will relate to this song easily

4. Backstreet's

A lyrical symphony, song writing mastery...the illiad.

"Endless juke joints and Valentino drag, where dancers scraped the tears
Up off the street dressed down in rags, running into the darkness
Some hurt bad some really dying, at night sometimes it seemed
You could hear the whole damn city crying, blame it on the lies that killed us
Blame it on the truth that ran us down, you can blame it all on me terry
It don't matter to me now."

This one verse alone sums up the anger terry and Bruce feel. They love each other, but they try to act like hero's to impress each other, to cheer each other up, in a world that NEEDS cheering. But all it brings them is hate and sadness...

5. Born to run

The American song. Gives you a rush every time you hear it. By the end, you'll be pumpin your fist to the drums, yelling along with Bruce,

"The highway's jammed with broken hero's, on a last chance power drive
Everybody's out on the run tonight, but their's no place left to hide"

By the end of the song, you'll be standing, screaming at the top of your lungs "TRAMPS LIKE US, BABY WE WERE BORN TO RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNN!!"

Eh, alright

"Eddy this guy he's the real thing
so if you wanna come along, you gotta promise you won't say anything, cause this guy don't dance
and words been passed this is our last chance"

Bruce and eddy are meeting with some dudes about something, but its big, and it could change the future for both of them. The piano/trumpet combo works great...

"Stay close tonight eddy, cause we got our selfs out on that line
and if we blow this one, they ain't just gonna be lookin for me this time
and all we gotta do his hold up our end...stuff this in your pocket, it'll look like your carrying a friend...

8. Jungleland

A perfect end, to a perfect album.

"Beneath the city two hearts beat
Soul engines running through a night so tender in a bedroom locked
In whispers of soft refusal and then surrender in the tunnels uptown
The rats own dream guns him down as shots echo down them hallways in the
Night
No one watches when the ambulance pulls away...Or as the girl shuts out the bedroom light"

The song starts out Fast and furious, and features a great solo by Clarance...then gets dark, as the once happy barefoot woman and "rat", who had big dreams and aspirations, now see them shot down.
But, they learn to carry on, as did Bruce. Congrats. You created the best rock album of all time. I wonder how it feels...

If you haven't experienced "Born to Run"..........2007-07-07

For me, it's just unimaginable to know music, and especially rock, without "Born to Run." This is one of the albums that I've grown up on since childhood, until each song has been so eternally emblazoned on my psyche that it brings so many memories. But outside of pure nostalgia, "Born to Run" is one of the premier rock albums ever in my mind. Bruce's third effort and first on a big budget, "Born to Run" captured people in 1975 with its good-time rocking music and lyricism that was all too real. But besides being a landmark triumph from a musical perspective, "Born to Run" accomplishes an amazing task by profiling the lifestyle of middle-class America in the seventies, surely making a grand statement. Bruce's depressing stories of the "losers," the wage-laboring men and women who get their weekend kicks by driving cars, hitting the boardwalk, and struggling through relationships, are inspirational and moving to someone of any economic standing. But outside of the lyrical content, the songwriting is phenomenal. The verses, solos, hooks, instrumentals, are all perfect. This is the album, to me, where the E-Street Band comes out of the background (although you could certainly say the same about The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle). Clarence Clemmons' sweet sax riffs, Gary Tallent and Max Weinberg's valuable contributions, and Steve Van Zandt's backup guitar simply add to the perfect product that is "Born to Run." The music is incredibly catchy, and each song in its own is a separate masterpiece. These are the kind of songs that will remain with you forever for numerous reasons, from the lyrics, the hook, the instrumentals, and the arrangement. If you own five music albums...make sure one of them is "Born to Run."

The first song is the rock n' roll classic "Born to Run," where Bruce evokes the spirit of Roy Orbison to create a simply beautiful rock and roll song, undoubtedly one of the greatest ever. And the twangy, piano-heavy rock of the joyful "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" makes just another absolutely timeless song. "Night" is an incredible ride through the nightlife of New Jersey, and it showcases the band in the spotlight. "Backstreets" is nothing short of incredible, from it's pumped-up intro with the piano, organ, and guitar to the rallying late-song chorus. The title song is certainly one of rock n' roll's finest, just a perfect song to me. "She's the One" and "Meeting Across the River" are probably the two lesser known songs from this album, but both embrace the musical and emotional spirit of the rest of the album. The final song is possibly my favorite, "Jungleland." Simply an amazing rock song.

If I haven't been able to express it to this point, "Born to Run" is a purely astonishing work of rock n' roll music that can be enjoyed on so many levels. Young listeners just getting into rock and roll might consider making this one of their first purchases. Otherwise, this is simply a must-have piece to any musical collection.

Not a huge Bruce fan. Moreso because i was born in 1986 and the only songs i ever really heard of him was all of his new stuff, and some of the overplayed songs that came off his "landmark" recording Born In The USA. To me, he hit his stride early with this amazing album. With a song like THUNDER ROAD, how can it not be amazing, the title in itself blows you away. The title track is amazing, as is more or less every other track here. Honestly if you are questioning if getting into Bruce is worth your time, don't bank on Born in the USA to change your mind. Look back at Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town. These are the albums that will move you, and my guess is that the songs on USA already make you sick and if they don't listen to classic rock radio for a day or two and then they will. Just my opinion

The first retooling of any album in the mighty Springsteen catalog is an exemplary labor of love by Columbia. The original 1975 release was the make-or-break record of Bruce's career and arguably still his best collection of material. It is presented here on one disc unsullied by outtakes or inferior versions--just pristine digital remasters of those eight grittily romantic songs of street life that defined the artist's signature styles. The substantial bonuses are two new DVD programs, one featuring a full concert performance by Bruce and the E Street Band on their first date outside the U.S. at London's Hammersmith Odeon in November 1975, and the other a "making of" documentary including band interviews and contemporary concert footage. The whole handsome box truly honors a legendary recording while providing generous value for fans.

The meat of the bonus material is the London show. A mythology has built around it that the band were so disorientated by travel and culture shock and Bruce so enraged by label-generated hype that they gave one of the worst performances of their career. Primitively shot by today's standards, the footage captures the brilliance of the relatively new band's ensemble playing. Highlights include a "Thunder Road" accompanied only by keyboards that opens the show, fiery solos on "Kitty's Back," a dynamic "Saint in the City," and a number of songs that have long since been retired. It's certainly notable how pensive and joyless Springsteen appears when compared to his later, animated stadium persona, but it's also fun to see the far greater role as foil played by Clarence Clemons. As he now testifies in the sleeve notes, putting lie to the myth, on that night they had "gone for broke," and as this writer can bear witness, the British audience exalted the show as the arrival of the greatest live performer of his generation. --Rob Stewart

The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle (1973)
The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle After a folk-rockish debut album that bubbled with ideas and dense lyrical play, this is where Springsteen began to find his voice as a rocker and as a songwriter. The prisoner-of-love romanticism of "Rosalita" and "Incident on 57th Street" hinted at what was coming, and this early version of the E Street Band--jazzier and more spare than later versions, thanks largely to David Sancious's piano--sounds great, if a little ragged, these many years later.

Born to Run (1975) and Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978)
These two records, which belong on any compilation of the top 100 rock albums of all time, sketched the themes that he would spend his whole career chasing, and defined the expectations fans would bring to his records ever after. The first chords of "Born to Run" sounded like freedom itself the first time I heard them on the radio, and the album lived up to them. "Thunder Road" is still the greatest rock & roll love song anyone's ever written. The record sounded so big and impassioned and propulsive it was easy to miss the dread running underneath it. Darkness... put the dread front and center. There are more of his best songs here than anywhere else, even if the sound is muddy and leaden at times.

Nebraska (1982)
After The River (the best record that didn't make this list) and the ensuing tour answered his rock & roll prayers--he was a big star now, not just a perennial critics' favorite--Springsteen holed up in a rented house on the Jersey shore, where he wrote these songs and sang them into a four-track recorder in his living room. The tape was supposed to be a demo for the band, but after several false tries he concluded that the tape he'd been carrying around in his pocket was the record. Quiet and bleak, Nebraska nonetheless grabbed you by the collar and made you listen as surely as his rock & roll records ever had.

Tunnel of Love (1987)
Tunnel of Love The glare and hubbub surrounding the Born in the USA tour (the tour was great--the record itself overrated) made him pull back again, this time to write a cycle of songs about love and fear and self-doubt. After this, Springsteen's first marriage broke up, and he started a family with Patti Scialfa, disappearing for the better part of 10 years, notwithstanding the pair of not-bad, just-disappointing albums he released in 1992, Human Touch and Lucky Town.

The Ghost of Tom Joad (1995)
The Ghost of Tom Joad Some call it Nebraska II, but his second acoustic album was not a repeat of his first--the characters and settings had changed, and their circumstances were more expressly desperate, and social--though it did share the same interest in what happens to people whose isolation or marginal status renders them invisible.

The Rising (2002)
The Rising Everybody, including Springsteen, seemed to think it was a record about 9/11, but the subject was broader--death and loss as seen from more than halfway down life's road. Dave Marsh nailed it: "A middle-aged man confronts death and chooses life" Brendan O'Brien's production sounds great.

I never would have purchased this set until I heard the live version of "Kitty's Back." Boom... Ordered it that night. Not only was the remastered CD a good trip past the years but the DVD! The band is tight and dressed out except for Springsteen. Made me dust off the Santana, Steely Dan, Van Morrison and Sinatra - believe it or not.

Worth it.......2007-05-07

The remastered album will only sound different from previous CD versions if you have very good headphones or a very good stereo, but the concert DVD (Live at the Hammersmith Odeon London 1975) and the documentary (Wings for Wheels) are worth the price on their own. There's also a booklet of small but sort of grainy pictures, taken from the tour and, possibly, the recording sessions.

The documentary has all sorts of interesting and funny insights into the production of the album, as well as insights into Springsteen himself. The concert DVD has shoddy picture, which is to be expected, but the sound quality and the quality of the performance itself more than make up for it. The picture booklet seems almost perfunctory, an afterthought, but even still, there are some interesting shots in it. And, again, the remastered audio will only sound different if you've got good headphones or speakers to begin with, but if you have that, it's wonderful.

If you're a fan, if you like good documentaries, or if you like a good concert on DVD, get this album. If you just want the songs and you're not an audiophile, just pick up the cheaper, non-30th Anniversary CD (which I don't believe was remastered, but I may be wrong).

Great album and package.......2007-04-29

This is great stuff. The original album needs no introduction every track is a winner - its a 5 star album. From Thunder Road to Jungleland via Backstreets this is one of the great Springsteen albums. Perhaps what make this album standout from other Springsteen albums is its epic scale. This isn't prog-rock though, despite the length of some of the tracks. As I think Springsteen once said, he was trying to capture the drive of the Rolling Stones (at there early 70's peak), with the voice of Roy Orbison, and the production of Phil Spector. An ambitious combination, but the result is worth it.
The documentary DVD is interesting, but you may only watch it once - however documentaries are very subjective and what I found uninteresting you may love.
The concert DVD as other people have said is a bit dark! However, the performances are excellent, the E Street band are on fire, and I found it enthralling to see (or not!) Bruce and the band 30 years ago performing with such passion.
If you haven't already got Born to Run you should buy this, if you have, do what I did and get as a birthday present.

Is Run-DMC the most important group of the past 25 years? Well, if you believe that the rise of hip-hop is the most significant musical development in a quarter century, what other conclusion can you draw? Run DMC seems a bit dated in a way, an artifact of the 80s, but that might be a good thing. Their raps are free of the celebration of anti-social behavior that's found in a lot of current rap. It's not sissy stuff, but you can listen to it without worrying if children are around. Their stuff has a heavy beat to it, it's kind of like rap/rock. Maybe that's a big part of why they had significant appeal to white kids and broadened the audience of rap. Indeed, Run DMC is one of the lead rap groups ever, largely because they were instrumental in taking rap mainstream. I'm an 80s white kid, and these guys are some of the first rappers I remember listening to. One criticism might be that a lot of the raps sound the same, at least as far as the beat goes. The raps are usually pretty fun and sometimes humorous. Like I said, it's stuff you can listen to "in the open." With over an hour of raps, this is a good buy, especially for those looking for some 80s culture.

The Absolute Kings of Rock.......2007-05-25

First, thoughts and prayers to JMJ's family and friends. RIP JMJ. This is a great introduction to the best hip hop, rap or whatever label you want prefer. I can remember the Metal Head's in high school (circa mid 80's) blasting this and that was unheard of in my little town. Run DMC is the most influential group in the last quarter century period. They bring back so many memories and they were one of the first rap groups I ever heard and was hooked. I think 99% of todays "rap" or "hip hop" artists or whatever you want to call them, suck. Listen to this and then listen to something from one of todays rap "stars" and try to argue that rap has really gone downhill in the last 5 to 10 years IMHO.

Really good that an album like this came out. A bunch of Run DMC classics on one cd. Run DMC set a standard style for Hip-Hop and theyll be remembered for doing so.

The production on this album is just crazy. That old school sound that sounds perfect on these songs. This album has 18 tracks, all classic RUN DMC songs. But back to the production, most of the beats are insanely dope. If you like old school hip-hop then youll love all these beats. Some beats that are standouts are.. "Its Tricky", "Beats To The Rhyme" (Love this beat), "Peter Piper", "You Be Illin", "Its Like That", "Sucker MC's", "Jam Master Jay" (RIP). These beats are top-notch and keep that real hiphop old school sound to it.

The lyrics are also good, just your typical old school hip-hop. I recommend this album to any Run DMC fans of course, and anyone who appreciates real hip-hop and old school hip-hop.

Run DMC hold a special place in my heart since they introduced and convinced me that rap deserves to be considered an aspect of music no different than rock , folk, etc.

There materials worked, at the time, because of the "cross over" nature of their songs. They injected a true rock sensibility into their raps. I wish more artists today would utilize guitars and real drums when rapping.

When you listen to this, the main theme of the music is FUN. This is roll down the windows, crank it up, sing along, songs.

The best songs are the ones that incorporate rock structure and pop culture. "Its Tricky", "Can you rock it like that", "My adidas", "Mary, Mary" and "You be Illin" are great.

The highlight is "Walk this Way". They took a song that was essentially a predecessor to rap and made it even more funky. I will challlenge any Aerosmith fan to a debate...if it was not for RUN DMC then Aerosmith would still be an obscure, over the hill group from the 70's. They made Aeromsith cool again! Run DMC's version is an improvement over Aerosmith's. This song is the ultimate party tune.

Run DMC will always be the best to rhyme. The beats are great and will make you say wow. They are not overated like some say because they are just so great that people can't say enough about their skills. This is an album of their classics and this is the record i put in my cd player to bring me back, or to just chill. Their music makes you feel so good and the beats you just want to rock your head to. Songs like 'you be illin', you talk to much', 'its like that', 'its tricky', and 'runs house' will never get old. Those aren't there only good songs, this album is full of hits and so are there other records. Its different than todays music definitly, yet they will always be the best rap group of all time.

For some artists it is relatively easy to list a best of collection but not so The Ventures. Don't get me wrong this is an excellent album and is well worth a look but I am not sure it is a better "best of" than a few of their other "best of" albums.

The best instrumental band of all time! They've gotta be! And they're still around! Well, what's cool about them is that on these recordings, their drummer, Mel Taylor, has just made it in my Top 5 drummers of all times! Well, after he died, his son took over the drummer duties for the Ventures!

This collection is basically songs from the 60's that made the Ventures what they are, THE BEST at what they do!

This is probably the best collection of their songs that you can get. It's set at a great price as well!

Not Bad, But Doesn't Seem To Age Well.......2006-06-21

I am being generous with 4 stars. It seems to me that the music sounds dated and doesn't age well. Not particularly interesting with so much other instrumental music to choose from. Also, the curse of any "best of" album is that there is always going to be something missing that someone thinks should be on there. Wasn't Pipeline a big, big Ventures hit? Also Telstar was quite popular too. Those are the only two Ventures songs that I recall getting consistent radio play, but perhaps I just missed hearing a lot of the other songs. Still, the album seems incomplete without Pipeline. Some of the songs are more interesting and innovative than others, which is why this probably deserves 4 stars.

This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.

This is my first CD of the Irish Tenors. And what a joy! I played it as soon as it arrived. I like the blend of their voices,the passion and enthusiasm they bring to this CD. What I find is a real treat is the words to all the songs are in the booklet.I love this CD.
