4 out of 5 stars The Final Battle.......2006-06-15

This is a fascinating album in that it is a picture of that last moment before true greatness breaks... The change that happened shortly after this album release to usher in the greatness was - Brian Eno left the band - and both parties got better in the doing.

Eno even admits as much, that everybody improved after the break-up

He was able to do his thing (Beautifully) and Roxy went on to be a more suitable pop offering under complete control of Ferry, not a bad thing, they became an example of art-pop with him at the helm and released album after album of beautiful music...

Eno went on to change the world (in my view) creating a musical genre called "ambient" still standing today ...

Both succeeded (A nice story)

There was a time when both Roxy Music and Eno were releasing albums simultaneously and it was staggering the power and artful skill exhibited on both records

such as "Stranded" (Roxy) and "Here come the warm jets" (Eno both in 73)

1974 saw "Country Life" (Roxy) and "Taking Tiger Mountain" (Eno)

1975 saw "Siren" (Roxy) and "Another Green World" (Eno)

1976 was ... Oops Roxy Music stumbled and made some live crappy album Eno released the brilliant "Before and After Science" ... the story goes on and on and I love them both and you should too..

I suggest buying it all, from both Eno and Roxy (right now) you can't lose.

1 out of 5 stars Hmm.......2006-06-10

I just listened to "The Bogus Man" twice. What a piece of garbage -- and nearly 10 minutes long. If this is any indication of the rest of the album, then stay away.

4 out of 5 stars Pain For Your Pleasure .......2006-05-31

Highly influential, but in some ways like Roxy Music's debut, now dated, there are breadths of greatness all over this unique, strange, and oft times disturbing record album. FOR YOUR PLEASURE may have had a great influence over popular culture, but I can't claim that that influence is necessarily good. This record is a hard look, always Pop tinged, musical and challenging, but not often pretty. This record was perhaps more for the pleasure of ROXY's principles than for their listeners, in a strictly tortured or cathartic sense, but there is no doubt this album moves their music forward from ROXY MUSIC's brilliant, yet terminally underrated, eponymous debut ROXY MUSIC. The halls of a music school opener on the third track "Strictly Confidential" clues the listener that ROXY MUSIC's secret is love of the music.

This record faired better than their debut in the ROLLING STONE RECORD GUIDE of 1979 that I reference constantly, garnering three stars, and I give this album another point than THE GUIDE did, yet despite this album's advances from the band's debut, I still rate it below that debut, ROXY MUSIC (which I rated highest with five stars). This is not because the songwriting is less brilliant here, it is even perhaps perfected on this second album. But here there is some obscuring of songs which on later Roxy Music albums are showcased, sans Eno-type effects and theoretically stripped of that influence, apparent on Roxy Music's third album STRANDED.

So, I don't care for "The Strand" too much, at least by 2006, and find it a mixed bag including weak and dated lyrical moments ("a danceable solution...to teenage revolution") which seems most directed at their English fan base at the time than the void of eternity. Yet, it is stunning to know English juveniles were listening to albums of such sophistication as FOR YOUR PLEASURE in 1973 which the USA was not.

Though I appreciate the necessary exploration vocally, aurally, and tonally with "The Bogus Man" it is ultimately, at nearly 10 minutes, a track to be skipped. Upon repeated listening, that track drags down the whole record. Also, contrary to other reviews, Brian Eno's contribution is most apparent on the title track, the album closer "For Your Pleasure." I don't find such apparent influence on "The Bogus Man," so, don't blame Eno. That title track, "For Your Pleasure," is my own favorite, but this whole album is more like your oatmeal than a chocolate bar: necessary and good for you, but not necessarily always a "pleasure." If you are easily challenged, the last and title track is one of the most challenging with Ferry's affected singing and its textural ending that in the 1970s would have had me rushing to my turntable to determine what was wrong and why it was making such a throbbing noise, which in fact may have been the point. It can be humbling, humorous, frightening, inspiring, and horrible to face truth. A woman's voice at the end here exclaims: "You didn't ask why."

Other tracks benefiting from Eno significantly: the lushly gorgeous and mesmerizing "Beauty Queen," the insightful terminator "Editions of You," and the STONES inspired "Grey Lagoons" ...all standouts on this remarkable record. "In Every Dream Home A Heartache" has less to do with Eno and more to do with Bryan Ferry's creepy lyric and eerie vocal for its legendary effect; who wants to listen to that every day? Phil Manzanera's a** scorching finale is both supple and soothing with a cleansing reprise, the afterburner. Yet, it does leave one with the puzzling question of who are ROXY MUSIC ?? All these years later, everybody knows Brian Eno left Roxy Music after this album, but I must mention it, because the next album, also great, is stripped but no better because of it. Yet, FOR YOUR PLEASURE remains a rare, important, quite imperfect, but necessary and unique record for all who hear that it is, indeed, FOR YOUR PLEASURE. Do you dare listen? You didn't ask why.

4 out of 5 stars It lost some of the distinctiveness of their first album, but was still, and still is, a Great Record.......2006-05-25

When looking at the progress of what was then a new band (headed by a new artist, Bryan Ferry) the assessment presents a trade-off: Roxy as a band had by this time played a number of tours together, with a settled bass player (the first album had, if memory serves, two bassists on it) and had ceased to sound like a group of studio musicians who were backing the singer songwriter Ferry.
On the other hand, the first Roxy album was so unusial, between the sound of Ferry's voice, his crafty-campy style of songwriting, and Brian Eno's strange sound sheets, that there just wasn't anything else out there in 1972 that sounded even remotely like it. The first Roxy album was very much the proverbial breath of fresh air.
This second Roxy album, while still a set of oustanding songs, sounds more conventional, as Ferry goes a little more to the classic Rock 'n' Roll ethos, and the album's songs are suggestive of other people- like Chuck Berry or Eddie Cochrane or the Rolling Stones or anguished Gospellers in Black churches in southern America. The strange edge is still there, has to be because Brian Eno is still in the group. But his presence is not so deeply felt on each song of this album, unlike the first where the spectre of Eno could be heard from first to last. There is one song that has the markings of the first album, the bizarre "In Every Dream Home a Heart Ache" the lyrics of which devolve from suburban melancholy to object fixations (or Ferry imagening a sexual triste with an inflatable doll). But the track abrubtly breaks out of this murmering grey dirge with a heavy burst befitting Led Zeppelin.
The peak of this album is the extended work out track known as "Bogus Man." Eno makes his most definate contribution to the album here, and the progress of the band as a playing club is again demonstrated to impressive results. The album is still wonderful, interesting, and eminently entertaining; and while it might be a five star for most any other group of the time (like the then critically overated "Stories") for Roxy their great masterpiece was still ahead of them, ("Stranded") and the loss of Brian Eno and the gain of Eddie Jobson.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for 5 stars!! Perfect........2006-05-22

First picked this up on vinyl, a couple of years after its release, having first heard Siren and Country Life. Love the inside cover art where the 5 of them are each in rock star pose yielding different guitars. Too cool! Even though there is a an eeriness to some of the songs/arrangements on For Your Pleasure, there is an overall warmth to the sound. For me, hearing this album was a life-altering experience. The scope of the instrumentation (from 1920's to the future and beyond) was mind-boggling. They were unlike any band in the world. All of the progressive rock and pop stuff I was listening to at the time paled in comparison. This more than stands the test of time!! An essential purchase!! Let's all hope and pray that their recent studio endeavors will harken back to the creativity and intensity of this (their collectively favorite release). Scary how good this is.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent Performance.......2007-01-10

What can I say about Bach played by LAGQ but The Perfect Combination. The only thing reprochable is that some tracks like the "Loose" Cannon by Pachelbel ends in fade out instead of a real ending. I wish this was a two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars For Thy Pleasure: Yeap, It is Very Enjoyable .......2006-10-25

For the first time, I listened to LAGQ from Vermont Public Radio while I came back home. After listening to "Little Fugue In G Minor", I could not get it out of my mind. I like the original version of Bach's organ music but the LAGQ version gave me a different feeling of music: True melancholy.
Buying the cd gave me a lot of joyful time. All the music in the cd were excellent. I believe there are a lot of musicians who are techically perfect but only a few of them can give me this kind of pleasure. All the music are beautiful and graceful. On top of that all of them are absolutely enjoyable.

Please try the last track, "Canon In D: The Pachelbel 'Loose' Cannon" when you are blue.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Guitars...And Then Some!.......2006-10-17

As a guitarist(mostly metal, neo-classical, rock, and blues), I have always been seeking that one 'classical' album that is just guitars working out entire orchestrations; no violins, cellos, etc(nothing personal, mind you...). This is that album. From the subtle to the intense, these 4 players work effortlessly together, putting together some faithful and authentic renditions of some familiar(some not so familiar)classical pieces. I was amazed at first just by the blinding technique, but began to appreciate the much more hidden aspects of this CD on multiple listenings. It has inspired me to look into a whole new style of playing. This is a really good starter CD for someone like myself who is just looking for some nice classical guitar ensembles.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasure For Your Musical Soul .......2006-02-22

I listened to this CD three times straight to make sure I heard every outstanding note. The arrangements were superb, and the talent....
This CD is a must for anyone who loves guitar and arrangments that will have you humming in your sleep!!

5 out of 5 stars Just amazing playing!.......2005-05-17

This cd is great, the repertoire isn't played very much, and these four gentlemen play it so well! My personal favorite track on the disc is the "loose" cannon! Just a fun arrangement of one of the most popular classical songs of all time, and it's virtuosic in every way! Another great CD. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars If You Love Classical Music, This CD Is For You .......2007-01-10

This compilation of movie themes is one of the most pleasurable CD's you'll ever own.

5 out of 5 stars Probably Decca's best "Adagios" set.......2006-07-26

I say "probably," since it's hard to outdo its "Beethoven Adagios" set. I've only bought a few of these "Adagios" sets because, looking over the track listings of so many, there's just so much overlap. Here, you get the best single collection of the bunch. Here, I was introduced to Addinsell's "Warsaw Concerto," and for that alone it was worth the price. But let's not forget a significant number of other gorgeous classic adagios: Beethoven's "Emperor" concerto (used in a gorgeous film, "Picnic at Hanging Rock"), Bach's "Air on a G String," Mahler's Adaghietto from Symphony no. 5, some obligatory Mozart, the Barber adagio, Debussy's Claire de lune, and - oh lovely! - Schubert's String Quintet in C. Then there are much-appreciated entries (Cinema Paradiso, Gabriel's Oboe) from a personal favorite composer, Ennio Morricone, one of the actual official film composers (as distinct from long-dead composers whose music was used in film) used for this collection, along with a couple from another personal favorite, John Barry. (You'd really need to get Barry's own set of "adagios," titled "Moviola," to get his best, e.g., the title theme to "Out of Africa" and to "Somewhere in Time." For Morricone, the master of the romantic adagio in the past century, go with "Itinerary of a Genius" or individual soundtracks like "Legend of 1900," "Lolita," "Once Upon a Time in America," "Once Upon a Time in the West," and others.)

A couple drawbacks to this set: (1) The adagio from Rachmaninov's 2nd is truncated to a mere 4 minutes. For this, one is well advised to purchase a CD with the entire concerto, or get a full version of just the adagio elsewhere (Decca does include a full version on its "Romantic Adagios" collection). (2) So much from so many composers is included, that there is too little room for more Beethoven. I'd prefer the adagio from the "Pathetique" sonata to the "Moonlight" one which was included here. For Beethoven adagios, you need the "Beethoven Adagios" set as an accompaniment (where you get, among other things, adagios for the op. 130 string quartet, the 6th symphony, the violin concerto, piano concerto no. 3, the 7th symphony, and the romance for violin no. 2, op. 50). If you're a fan of Mozart music often used in the movies, there's the "Mozart Adagios" set and/or the "Amadeus" soundtrack.

I'm a "purist" as to a few works; I'd rather hear the entirety of the "Emperor" concerto than merely the adagio, for instance. In plenty of other cases, an adagio movement is heard just fine as a stand-alone work; plenty of the most beautiful music is used for adagio movements, as these sets make clear enough.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CDs you'll ever own.......2003-03-23

This is an excellent selection of music. I listen to it every chance I get. It is great just to put in your CD player on "repeat" and allow it to soothe and inspire you for a few hours, for an evening, or an for entire day.

One reason I chose it was that I was looking for music that could simply be a nice background noise for when I'm working on things that require reading and concentration. I wanted music that would not be a distraction, and this does a good job. It is also great to listen to when doing almost anything, like even cleaning the house or doing laundry. I will admit though, that listening to the selection from Swan Lake might make you want to dance around the living room.

Also, besides the obvious ones that everybody knows (Beethoven's 5th, or Canon in D, etc.) I do not know enough to distinguish specific songs from their composers, which is why I was hesitant to buy a classical CD soley of one artist because once I got it I may not have liked it or been familiar with any of the songs. That is why I picked Movie Adagios because I knew it would be a selection of some of the best classical music from the movies, which it is.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime!.......2002-09-08

Of course, I'm nuts for classical music and classic movies, so this compilation of music featured in some of the most famous movies ever made is an absolutely ideal CD.

Filmmakers have been raiding the classical music files since the days of the silents in order to heighten the mood of a scene and provide a greater emotional impact. Barber's Adagio for Strings has been used not only in "Platoon", as this CD lists, but also in "The Elephant Man". While there's only a small snippet of Rachmininoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 here, it's worth remembering that the entire piece is used throughout the magnificent "Brief Encounter" to heighten the impact of the romance. Mozart's Trio (Cosi fan tutte) was brilliantly used in "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" to comment on a complex romantic triangle.

There are also 5 pieces written directly for the screen, two by Ennio Morricone (the haunting Gabriel's Oboe from "The Mission" and the exquisite Nuovo Cinema Paradiso from "Cinema Paradiso"), two by John Barry (a lovely version of We Have All the Time in the World from the James Bond classic "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and the elegiac John Dunbar Theme from "Dances With Wolves") and one by Michael Nyman (The heart asks pleasure first from "The Piano").

I love this CD, to relax with, to read with, and just immerse myself in the spectacular sounds of genius.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC.......2001-12-03

This is a great classical piece for the lovers of classical, as well as the ones who may hate it. These Adagios CDs get beter and better each time there is a new release. I must warn you there some good as well as some bad ones. There is a certain Adagio flavor for everyones. At the present I have others, but the ones I truly enjoy are Violin Adagios, The Piano Adagios and this one. This compilation is great for reading. Furthermore this CD can be great evening music... for sleeping.

Those of you who have not got on board with the ADAGIOS, please get on board the next time you go to your favorite music store. You may be surprised at how you have enriched yourselves with great music for your listening pleasure.

This is such a great cd for relaxing with a glass of wine and candles. It really makes the soul feel good.

5 out of 5 stars new age/space music prime choice.......2006-11-07

Kerala Dream is a very special album of space music, akin to that heard on NPR's "Music From the Hearts of Space". The last cut, "Samadhi", is especially fine and contemplative, with a subtle sitar creating soothing melodies and a calming mood. Some of the songs have flute and bass. This album has a variety of sounds, from environmental sounds from India, to vocals and sounds from the Amazon. This album goes especially well with yoga practice and exercises. This album is a exemplary blend of musical forms from India, environmenatal, and Western styles. I use this album to go to sleep to and I frequently do not remember the last cut since by then, I am fast asleep. Very relaxing album and I highly recommend it to yoga enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars The title says it all........2006-03-19

If you are looking for music with an Indian flavor, and a sure bet, look no further. This is great music for Yoga practice, or just relaxing. Sample Durga Shakti, and Guru Brahma and you 'll see what I mean. The sounds of Amazonian frogs and birds, the sitar, and awesome vocals make this CD unique, and just a pleasure to listen to.

Embracing the role of fellow spiritual seeker as well as composer, pianist Kevin Kern invites listeners to find a safe, comfortable place in their imaginations and tag along on what his CD packaging describes as a "self-guided healing visualization." For those favorably inclined toward such musical journeys of the soul, Kern proves to be a sincere and capable guide. His slowly unfolding piano works (periodically embellished with acoustic guitar, flute, strings and understated electronics) are soft, serene and, on occasion ("High above the Valley" and "Through the Veil" in particular), memorably attractive. The foil-stamped/die-cut/textured paper packaging for The Winding Path, Kern's sixth career release, is first-rate; the story line it contains, centered on the discovery of a "cauldron of healing," is a matter of personal taste. As for the music, Kern's compositions can intermittently seem a touch too sweet or simplistic, but the overall flavor is peaceful, relaxing and, considering the context, admirably refined. --Terry Wood

4 out of 5 stars Good Quiet Time Music.......2006-11-05

I like this CD very much, it is good relaxing music.
The only thing I don't like is the fact I can't rip it into my computer - that is very annoying because that was one of the main reasons I purchased it - so I could add it to my Calm Music MP3 compliation on my computer. Because of this I won't be purchasing more of Kevin Kern's music.

5 out of 5 stars An Easy Winner.......2005-08-26

A strange thing happens every time I listen to this album - I hear the first few cuts and then there's a blur and the last cut is going by. This isn't meant as a negative, but it does point out that this is one of those albums that quickly blends into whatever I'm doing and becomes part of the environment.

Much to my surprise, Kevin Kern is a native Detroiter (there's not a lot of New Age music getting made up here). His training is classical, with a lot of mentoring by George Shearing. The combination has made him a master of improvisation, with a knack for taking the melodic path. Winding Path is his sixth album, done in 2003. It spent some 15 weeks on the charts, which is a pretty solid accomplishment.

This is a 'group' album - Pamela Copus on various woodwinds and Jeff Kinski on Guitar are the core players, (listen to the first two cuts - Touch of Love and Way of the Stream) but several others add their talents to make the album something of a surprise to those who think of Kern as a solo pianist. He also experiments a bit with sound effects and such (High Above the Valley).

I'm hesitant to say this is his best album, but once I decide to pay careful attention to it, it is certainly one of his most interesting. A lot of the work is quite subtle. I give this one an 'A' for listenability. Yet another reason to put a stereo in the woodshop.

5 out of 5 stars Real Music.......2003-06-13

"Winding Path" is a rare great album, a must-have for all who loves emotional, intelligent, comforting piano-based music... Thank you very much, Kevin, for this wunderful and timeless record.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2003-06-04

As a long-time fan of Kevin Kern's music, I'm excited to say that I think "The Winding Path" is his best album to date. Due to a serendipitous equipment failure just prior to the recording sessions, this album is much more acoustic than previous albums and the "canned" strings are all but gone. Kern recorded this album on an amazing Hamburg Steinway that he refers to as "God's own piano," and his passion for this instrument sings through on each piece. Joining Kern on this album are 2002 (Pam Copus does an incredible job on all of the wind instruments, and Randy supplies bells and other sounds), Jeff Kinsky on guitar, Jeremy Cohen on violin, Terence Yallop on bells on one track, and Kevin's wife, Pam, on rainstick. And then there is that piano. The combined forces produce a "great big soundscape" (Kevin's quote) that may surprise some of his fans. The music is still very gentle, soothing, and uplifting, but the feel and quality of the album is bigger and fuller. I love it! Kern says that the difference in his approach to this album is that this music will be the "heart and soul and center" of his live appearances - concert audiences are in for a real treat!

"The Touch of Love" opens the album on a rather ethereal note. The 2002-influence is really strong on this piece, and it is a truly beautiful collaboration. Pam Copus' flute has such a feeling of yearning, combined with sweet voices, and that marvelous piano (and pianist!). "The Way of the Stream" is a gorgeous guitar/ piano duet with a few additional sounds for color. "A Million Stars" is a wonderful piece that Kern created in the studio at Terence Yallop's suggestion that he "play the sky." (Pieces like this make my fingers itch!) The clarity and sparkle of the upper registers of the piano are perfect for depicting a clear night skyscape away from the lights of the city. This is definitely one of my favorite Kern pieces (not just from this album). "High Above the Clouds" begins with the sound of a thunder storm; Pam Copus comes in on Native American flute, playing a lovely, melancholy melody. Then the piano picks up the melody and develops it. The piece becomes a flute and piano duet with some background accompaniment. "Through the Veil" is a classic Kern anthem with the addition of a rhythm track. Mostly piano and guitar (with Pam on rainstick!), the melody is compelling and heartfelt - another one of my favorites on this album. My favorite track on "The Winding Path" is the title track, which features Kern on piano, Copus on flute, and the incredible Jeremy Cohen on violin. An achingly beautiful piece, this one touched me deeply each of the ten or so times I've heard it.

Bravo to Kevin Kern and company for producing a "real" standout! A guided visualization is included in the liner notes for those who are so inclined, but the music is vivid and colorful enough that you can probably produce your own daydreams to accompany it.

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous Offering from Kevin Kern.......2003-06-04

"The Winding Path" is Kevin Kern's latest CD for Real Music, and what an outstanding collection of tracks is to be found on this 44 minute disc.

With far more emphasis on blending other instruments with his exquisite piano playing, this CD is quite different from his previous efforts. Long-term Kern fans need not worry, however. The additional accompanying instruments merely enhance the beauty of his piano playing, and make this one of my all-time favourite CDs.

2002 fans will be delighted by the duo's quite prominent presence on the disc. From Pamela Copus's gorgeous flute playing on tracks 1 and 10, plus harp on track 2, to Randy Copus's percussion on tracks 2, 5 and 9, it is not difficult to see why some of the tracks have a 2002 feel to them. I agree with Kathy Parson's observation that this is very evident on the first track.

All the tracks are strong on this CD, but favourites include tracks 1, 3, 8 and 10. I note that Kevin dedicates Track 3,"A Million Stars" to "all those who reach for the stars". This is likely to be a popular track with his fans, partly because it is extremely beautiful, and also because it truly is solo piano.

This CD is exceptionally well presented, and has a wonderful feel to it. The CD insert contains an introduction to guided visualisation, where the listener is invited to go on a relaxing journey whilst listening to the music.

It may be of some interest that this CD was apparently going to be originally called "Leaf, Twig and Petal". I think that the change of name was a wise move, and is more befitting of the content.

On a par with "In the Enchanted Garden", this CD is right up there in terms of melodic beauty, and way beyond it with regards presentation. Kevin is using other instruments to compliment his piano playing, and this shows a willingness to move forward with his music. It, in no way, detracts from the beauty of the lead instrument.

I give this CD my highest recommendation. It is a joy to listen to from start to finish, and it is no wonder why there seems to be great excitement surrounding this disc. Stunning.

3 out of 5 stars it depends on you.......2004-07-22

If you're a fan of all that Sexton had done before this,(and after): virtuoso sideman guitar in his own high-energy version of a rootsy style, this cd will sound like different person. Fans of British pop-rock might like it, but I'm of the first persuasion, and I'm guessing that so is Sexton, as he abandoned this persona shortly afterwards.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Be Fooled By This Recording.......2003-10-27

You have to know the history of Charlie Sexton to know what made him tick, and that goes back a long ways. When this record came out, we got a copy at my college radio station, and we played the single "Beat's So Lonely" until it became radio and MTV fodder, then we worked the rest of the record.I don't know what Charlie was on when he let the record label and the imagemakers turn him into a 17-year-old, posturing, 80's hair boy. There are good songs here, but the record does not do justice to him as a guitarist, all-around musician, or songwriter.Better bets include Arc Angels, the superband with Doyle Bramhall, Jr., Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon...yes, Double Trouble.Things to know: Charlie was a renaissance kid. At 13, if the story he tells is true, he was going to school, working a job and in a band! Forget child prodigies and forget Hanson...Sexton was a true bluesman as a teen, he's lived it, breathed it and is STILL making great music. Now, if only he would get the proper respect the critics owe him!

5 out of 5 stars Charlie Sexton is a legend for a very good reason........2003-07-17

Even with the taint of the 80's clinging to it, I can't help loving this disc. Charlie Sexton's skill makes me want to chuck my job and my mortgage and become a groupie.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of the '80s........2002-08-25

I got this when it was first released. Great sound, great voice, great lyrics. I put this album in the same category as ex-Sex Pistol Steve Jones's album "Mercy." Bluesy, dark, a little cynical. Admittedly, listening to "Pictures for Pleasure" now, it's a little dated with a kind of produced '80s sound, but that's easily made up for with his sensational voice and the clever lyrics.

4 out of 5 stars An Auspicous Beginning.......2002-05-14

Why dig this record?? Well, if you're into Bowie, into Idol (Check the "Thin White Duke"-ish baritone vocals...) , and have a sweet tooth for slightly over-produced non-metal 80's hard rock , this cd's for you. Most of us know Charlie plays lead guitar for Bob Dylan now..what most people don't know is when he signed to MCA for this album in the mid-80's he was paid the most ever for an "unknown" (millions) and he was only 17. Sexton became a victim of what mainly the critics attacked him with...he was a "HYPE". But listen to this record today and you'll know....the talent is considerable....the songs are for real, and the soul is THERE. Dylan was already a fan before the record was released (Check out "Biograph" liner notes). Too bad the critics /cynics put the lights out on this one before Charlie got the chance he deserved....A+++++

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

What a crowning achievement to bring "Reel Chill:Cinematic Chillout Album", released by Silva America and featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus ~ conductors are Mark Ayres, Paul Bateman, Rick Clark, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine and David Temple director of the chorus ~ one can only expect the highest quality of performances and quench the thirst of all "film-score-buffs".

Sit back and unleash the first disc with composers ~ Albinoni, Craig Armstrong, John Barry, Vladimir Cosma, Enya & Nicky Ryan, Handel, Francis Lai, Ennio Morricone, Sean O'Riorda, Nino Rota, Ryvichi Sakamoto and Vangelis ~ taking each film score cue "BILITIS", "CHARIOTS OF FIRE", "CINEMA PARADISO", "DIVA", "GALLIPOLI", "THE LORD OF THE RINGS:THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING", "BARRY LYNDON", "MERRY CHRISTMAS MR. LAWRENCE", "MIDNIGHT COWBOY", "THE MISSION", "ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA", "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST", "ROMEO & JULIET" and "ROMEO + JULIET", with arrangements that soar and then simmer into pure meditation of grandeur ~ classic film music prevails, as orchestration comes to the surface with pure originality ~ one masterpiece after another is long last presented as it should have been, is cause for celebration ~ each cue is a distinctive gift for striking modernism, touching on the transition of the period in this planets history.

Second disc is waiting in the wings are composers ~ Samuel Barber, John Barry, Patrick Cassidy, James Horner, Mahler, Mascagni, Stanley Myers, Thomas Newman, Michael Nyman, Howard Shore, John Williams and Hans Zimmer/Lisa Gerrard ~ take a musical ride with "AMERICAN BEAUTY", "A.I.
