The third full-length release from Massive Attack is a taste of the future of pop music--a future where precisely engineered events can be seamlessly partnered with the subtle complexities of a human voice. Since their first album, Blue Lines, they've been making similar magic happen with any one of several guest vocalists, but nothing like the way it happens on Mezzanine. This time they take the union further, moving it into a darker space in which the individual elements become less discernable. Guest vocalists are Sara Jay, Horace Andy (who also appeared on their debut), and Elizabeth Fraser (of Cocteau Twins), whose amazingly articulate and distinctive voice works so very well with the music of Massive Attack. --Paul Clark

A classic.......2007-06-21
There aren't many trip hop albums I have bought over the years that has managed to sound fresh every time I throw in the cd into my stereo or listen to it on my iPod. Massive Attack's 1998 classic "Mezzanine" is one of those few trip hop albums that still sounds as fresh today as I first heard it almost ten years ago. The music is a sublime mix of hypnotic electronic beats, seductive male and female vocals, and a diverse mix of samples from bands like The Cure.
What I love about "Mezzanine" so much is that the music is dark and sinister. All the death/black metal bands in the world cannot create music as richly dense and heavy as "Mezzanine" is. There is a terrifying quality to the music that the entire album would be a perfect film score for a psychological thriller. The first two songs "Angel" and "Risingon" sounds like they would be perfect scores for my nightmares. I can never get tired of listening to "Teardrop" which features Elizabeth Fraser on vocals. The production is neither too slick or too gritty. "Mezzanine" is one of the few albums I can actually call flawless. Every song is a Massive Attack classic.
Worth it by far.......2007-06-18
This is probably one of my favorite albums of all time. Great CD and quality. Buy it, you won't regret it.
Sublime.......2007-05-23
This is one of my favourite CD's and sounds like a cross between Advokat and Zero 7. Great for late night, moody listening...
It's Not Trip-Hop, But it is...........2007-05-04
This was the first Massive Attack album i bought. it doesn't sound like it's been almost ten years since this came out, it just has this timeless feel to it. Massive Attack has, ironically, done everything they have set out to do on this album, and that is be exactly who they are by trying to escape who they have become. i know that that may sound kind of strange, but it makes sense. The label "trip-hop" is something they have always loathed, despite the fact that they were pioneers of it, and i find it ironic that this album is one of the (if not THE)preeminent examples of this style.
"Mezzanine" is like the "Sgt. Pepper's" of trip-hop, and of Massive Attack's career. i don't care how many more albums they release, this will always be the best one. however, i do disagree with some reviews that label this album as heavy metal. Massive's music always seems to come close to style, but shies away. there are shades of everything reggae, hip-hop, metal, ambient, but i can't say that there is enough to pinpoint it down in general. again this is something that i find unique to trip-hop, never quite getting at what it wants to be stylistically but coming very close.
continuing my comparison to "Sgt. Pepper's" the first obvious parallel is the structure of the album. the songs fit so perfectly together, that while some may not be great songs, it is how they fit in relation to the others that makes them work. the track "exchange" while seeming stupid to other reviewers i find to be a wonderful midpoint break between the four track barrage to open the record and the second half. unfortunately though, in similarity to the Beatles and all great bands, landmark albums lead to destruction. The Beatles were never the same after Sgt. Peppers breaking up barely three years later. Massive, while still barely clinging to 3D and Daddy G, have lost a bit of edge. The creative juices only flow so far and i think the gas has ran out a bit. but what an incredible record!!!
The most original album of the 90's.......2007-05-04
Massive Attack's Mezzanine ranks right up there with David Bowie's Low and the Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat for most original album in the history of pop music. It is an album of craft; each beat, each note, and each lyric are carefully put into place for perfection. This album is not for everybody however; the dense, pristine production of Mezzanine conjures up a heavy air of claustrophobia. If slow and creepy is your cup of tea, then take a gulp, because this is as good as it gets. Mezzanine is a concept album. Since it is hard to figure out what the concept is, I will give it away. It is about autism. Mezzanine is not a happy record, but it is not depressing either. The tone that I get is one of fuzzy, distorted confusion, with the singers detailing the struggles of making sense of the world around them (the way autistic savants do) with impeccable songwriting. Lyrics such as "toy-like people/make me boy-like" will remain fresh and experimental for a very long time. Mezzanine is more hypnotic than entertaining, that is for sure. But in that, it succeeds impossibly well. Mezzanine, along with Blur's The Great Escape, is the best album of the 90's. Genius. A+

Album Description
In contrast to Liz's previous work, her second release is a surprisingly hi-fi affair. Gone are the hissing ghosts and unsure echoes that once haunted and obscured her recordings. Her voice and guitar are the focus here, and she performs with more energy, determination, and flat out rawness than ever before. These eleven songs cover a lot of ground. Produced by Vic Chesnutt and engineered by Andy Baker (Macha, Japancakes, Glands).
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful........2007-03-13
At this writing, Amazon is not providing sound clips for this album. If interested, I suggest you find Liz Durrett on YouTube. I was especially taken with her version of "Crazy" (not on the album) and "Little Ascendent" and "Marlene," which are. Very pleased that I stumbled upon this artist. Came upon her work through my interest in Phosphorescent, another amazing musician and writer.
Happy evidence that the South may still be gothic.......2006-11-19
Some years back, the Southern literary magazine The Oxford American questioned whether anything of the Southern gothic still remained. Had Southern heritage and culture survived or had it all been paved over to make room for chain stores? Well, for those who hold that The North won the war, but Wal-Mart won The South, you might have a reason to stop fretting for a few moments. The Mezzanine, by Athens Georgia resident, Liz Durrett, is a beautiful album that mixes evocative images, dreamy ballads, and spooky lullaby-like songs into a haunting pastiche of dusty portraits, kudzu vines, creaky floorboards, and children's toys. At times, The Mezzanine bears a resemblance to the songs of Cat Power's Moonpix. The title song is certainly a stand out, but there are many good songs on this album. Durrett doesn't wear her Southerness like banner, but if you look with the right eyes, you'll find it. For some, it may be a grateful reminder that contemporary Southern music isn't yet entirely reducibly to the corporate designed Dixie-fried hat acts from Nashville.
Don't trust someone else to like the same music that you enjoy........2006-02-08
Words are not my first medium, so I will refrain from trying to translate one art form into the other. I can say this, however:
Wow. Completely beautiful.
Well, personally, I only trust my ears when it comes to music - so I cannot actually recommend that you buy any album without hearing the music first. On the other hand, I couldn't believe there were no glowing reviews for this wonderful record. So give 'er a listen, and then you will be forced to buy it!
Liz's live shows are also well worth your time.

Customer Reviews:
Album 2 is the best.......2005-04-24
Album 2, Seduction Time is the better of the two albums. It has great rhythm and beat and won't dissapoint you in the car, beach, or jogging. I downloaded the album into my MP3 player and thus can have greater portability. I would give it 5 stars but album 1,Dinner Time is just mediocre at best or upgraded elevator music.
This album is must buy. My favorites include Midnight. The music is especially soothing and surreal when driving at night in a smooth lane.
50% Total Bliss !.......2004-10-21
Each of the 3 Mezzanine CDs are different in musical direction, and each has it's own follies, faults, fabulousness. But Mezz 3 is the most curious, by far.
I'm a great fan of this series, so my total and complete revulsion at listening to CD1 (DJ Fabrice Lamy) caught me off-guard. Is Lamy intentionally trying to sink the Mezzanine ship? I've never heard a more incoherent, uninteresting, and totally annoying mix in this genre of music. Words cannot describe how unappealling in every way is the first CD, "Dinner Time". My immediate reaction was to sail the CD out my back door. Wimpy vocals, distrubingly trite lyrics, and the most simpleminded musical selections pretty much sum up this travesty.
Now, about CD2....MON DIEU! Brilliance. Absolute brilliance, thanks to DJ Dyed Soundorom. It's hard to find ANY up tempo house / lounge mix as complete and seemless as this. It's BY FAR worth the price of both CDs to get just this ONE.... you really must.
After you've played CD 2 a couple of times, take joy in disposing of CD1 in whichever way makes you feel best (I suggest baking it in the oven at 450 degrees for 10 minutes, then bathing it in ice cold water...pop, crack, fizzle...)
Tres Fantastique!!!!!.......2004-08-13
I acquired the CD recently and this is all I can say:
Mezzanine Volume 3 has definitely blown top pick compilations out of the water.
Two Discs- Dinner Time & Seduction Time- Once more Dinner time begins to marvel us with it's fine "gourmet" selection of down tempo and jazzy beats, definitely setting the moods towards enjoying the night out till it's time for another dosage of tunes that give the night it's perfectly seductive touch.
That's when Seduction Time enters as the night has barely begun to get going in the only way we know how to enjoy it: To the Fullest.
I sincerely recommend you get hold of this CD. Collections like this are definitely worth GOLD. It's a Top Notch Pick whether it's for having your own personal soiree at home, Enjoying the night on a Late night drive or just simply trying to find the "inner snob"in you.
Best of the Best
The Mezzanine is GOLD again..........2003-07-28
As a big fan of deep house, acid jazz, underground hip hop, clubbed out jazz and chillout music, picking up the latest release of the Mezzanine was a no brainer.
The first volume set the stage nicely with both Dinner Time and Seduction Time mixed by Fabrice Lamy and Shade respectively. The Mezz was followed up with Volume 2 with very sexy and stylin new cover art. The music was again top notch. Fabrice Lamy and Chloe (regulars at the Mezzanine) provide your ears with aural love.
Finally Volume 3 hits the shelves, and took a listen last night in my ride. Damn good...each one gets progressively stronger. Check out the FIERCE beats found on track 4 disc 1 by RJD2....unbelievable smokin beats. Makes you wanna dance dirty with the nearest hottie.....onto some Seduction Time.....
GET THIS DISC, its totally worth every penny.

Get your Own Drum Synthesizer....and You're in Business!.......2003-07-09
A number of beach restaurants and swank hotels along the French Cote d'Azur are hiring DJs to play, and are issuing recordings of, music that (they think/hope) reflects the ambiance of their locales. It's such a trend that it's almost surely happening elsewhere in France too!
This is one of the leaders in that trend. "L'Alcazar" is a Parisian hot spot restaurant that was created a few years back by Terence Conran, a trendy British designer. This CD is a selection of some of the background music that he has allowed in. I really have to hope his cuisine is better than the music his DJs have come up with.
Thousands of diners, plus 'le tout-Paris' "in" crowd think I'm wrong, of course, or just don't care as long as they can be in the swim somewhere and maybe meet a like soul. If your idea of a cool night out is a drink and conversation with friend/friends over a background cushion of endless, montonous, simplistic, unsubtle, and ultimately boring electronic beats -- one very much like the one preceding it -- plus a repeating electronic or "vocal" motif over the top, then this is for you. If my adjectival laundry list appears redundant and heavy, it nevertheless reflects the music as I hear it.
If, however, you like musical music and have your own musical choice and identity then you will quickly find the Alcazar formula empty.
There is much that makes music a valid art form that is missing at L'Alacazar. Their crop of composers sets up a rhythm on a drum synthesizer, adds a mournful riff, a dirge or some brief tough dialogue and then repeats, and repeats and repeats it. I imagine it provides a medium that stressed-out yuppies can chill out to. However, it is ultimately a creation of the drug age, where hypnotic sound is considered a plus.
As for the drumming patterns on these disks, the likes of Chick Webb, Sonny Greer, Sidney Catlett, Dave Tough, Jo Jones, Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones and their (dead) disciples are surely turning over in their graves.
The recording is good and if you buy this series of CDs, some of your friends may find you pretty darned stylish!! However, this up-to-date canned elevator music will surely soon go the way of the Lambada.
Another Dinner & Lounge Mix From A Paris Hotspot.......2001-04-22
I buy a lot of this stuff and there are only 5 tracks of the 23 that I had before, so even though it's kind of the same old story, there's plenty of new stuff and most of it is quite good. Same concept as Claude Challe's Buddah Bar: first disk is "Dinner" and the second is "Seduction", but without the Far East/World influence. Starts out as chilled out, ambient, light trip hop and ultimately ends up in sampled, deep house. Nicely mixed but not so seemlessly you can't hear it. Would sit nicely next to Naked Music, Kevin Yost, Costes, or anything lounge or deep house (no divas). Would be a good buy both for someone new to downbeat, chilled, house as well as someone trying to get their hands on more.

Music to lounge and move to........2006-04-28
I found this cd to be a great find, two cds with some really good tunes and all of them have a different beat, style (latin, rock, etc.) and speed. Some of the remixes of by BAZ for "Never Ending Story" even the Bob Marley Try Me. If you like dance this has it with double and Jungle Wonz.
My favorite is Jerome Sydenham with Stockholm-Go Bang (Club Mix) which is a very good tune.
Enjoy the music.
