An Excellent Bargain-priced CD!!.......2002-02-13

I originally purchased this disc as an EMI Classics Red Line release (I think I paid $5.99 for it). It was a steal then, and remains so today on the Seraphin line (simple a reissue of the same EMI Red Line release).

Maurice Andre is a fantastic trumpet player, and he simply shines on this recording (featuring the Academy of St. Martins on the Field under Sir Neville Marriner). Bargain-priced CDs tend to get the proverbial bum rap, but Seraphin (as usual) offers a first-rate recording that can compete with any full-priced release. I've listened to this disc at least 20 times, and I never tire of it. Andre and Marriner bring to life these works, some by lesser-known composers (like Stolzel, Telemann and Torelli). I can't think of a better introduction to these underrated Baroque artists (with the exception of Sony's 'Baroque in Italy' CD, which sadly is now out-of-print, too).

This recording, as with so many others, will not be available forever. Given the quality of the recording and beauty of the pieces, I strongly recommend purchasing this disc before it, too, goes out-of-print. It's a great disc at a great price, and would be a welcomed addition to any Classical music collection.

Better than a dab of Imperial margarine.......2001-03-01

This is a great feel-good record. Music to reign by.

The Stölzel concerto for four instrumental choirs is a particular gem, a great piece to cue up and wake up in the morning to. There is nothing particularly deep or heavy here. All of these pieces are light, in major keys. They are well recorded and well played.

This CD is just a delight. If you enjoy Baroque, you will find this CD one of your favorites. It has a pleasant register and a lightness that is a pleasure to any ear. An excellent value.

I owned this LP in my twenties, when I listened to mostly jazz and classical music genres. I had always liked show tunes and the the music from My Fair Lady, especially. Andre Previn's ingenious renditions and improvisations to these songs are typical 60's jazz. This CD reproduction is truly a classic and one that should make up any collection of late 50's and 60's piano-based jazz trios.

Like others, I originally bought the LP back in the Fifties.It was always a favourite but of course vinyl dosen't retain its quality forever. What a great surprise then to find the CD was available thru Amazon.Since receiving this updated version,I have found that the quality of this recording has not dated one bit. Unlike some CDs, every track is a winner! Andre Previn has retained the essence of these memorable compositions but at the same time has added some pretty enjoyable, but tight improvisations on piano. Meanwhile the rhythm section , compliments of Manne & Vinegar set up the perfect platform for Previn as they drive each number along like a steam engine! A GREAT recording!

West Coast Sounds At Their Best.......2007-01-13

This was one of the earliest LP's that I bought low those many years ago when I firts began to collect jazz. When I saw it in CD formatt, I jumped to buy it. Previn, as usual is suburb. Leroy Vinneger enhances the group's sound with a solid base line: he is unabtrusively always back there. The bottom line, however, is Shelly. What a supurb drummer! Listen to how he drives the group through the songs of this great Broadway show. As an old drummer I swear that I can hear him "play" some of the melody on his instrument. Add this one to your collection.

Have searched high & low for this album, so Amazon thank you. Andre Previn is so cool on this album along with all of the other musicians. My favorite since college days. From "On the Street Where You Live" to the end, the musical interpretation from the Broadway play is magnificant and has haunted me all these years. Can't wait to hear it again!

An old favourite.......2000-05-14

This album was my first entre to modern jazz in 1958. I still have my original LP and it is still my most cherished. For anyone wavering about modern jazz, do not hesitate with this one. It never goes cold and never stops swinging. A must for anyones collection!

For anyone who likes Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, this CD is a must have.

Arthur at his best........2002-03-20

Arthur Fiedler made listening to classical music fun. Try a listen to 'Pomp and Circumstance', one of my favourite pieces of classical music. 'William Tell Overture' shines as does most of the material on this album. Well recorded for it's day. Fiedler is missed.

Fiedler's Finest.......2002-02-16

I had the opportunity of playing in an orchestra under Maestro Fiedler. He was a tough, no nonsense conductor who expected crisp, lyrical, and expressive. His musical interpretations of everything from Sabre Dance to Syncopated Clock; from Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 to his love for the Beatles, sets him as the ruler supreme in pop music. I only hope RCA will continue to reissue his LPs so a new generation knows the man and his music. Bravo!

what a collaboration of musical excellence, oh what style!.......1999-06-08

I bought this CD a little over a year ago and it is still among my favorites. "Polvetsian Dances" is excellent no matter what your interests. The full version of "Pomp and Circumstance" as well as "The William Tell Overature" are wonderful; The "Procession of the Nobles" is victorious and galliant; the lyrical complexity of "Farandole" is haunting. This is a brilliant compilation of musical excellence.

For the serious or casual LeRoy Anderson fan, this is a must have collection. Has all those songs you've heard on the radio and said to yourself, "I've heard that before - now what is it called?"

THE Anderson Collection to Own.......2005-01-23

As a music lover, I've had a long and happy relationship with the works of Leroy Anderson. As a kid, my parents would take me to the historic Emery Theatre in Ohio, for double features of Laurel & Hardy, the Marx Brothers, Abbott & Costello - you get the idea. During intermission, a skilled player would take over the helm of the mighty Wurlitzer theatre organ, and favor us all with all and sundry selections. One night, however, a certain piece really grabbed me, and I asked my father, a seasoned singer, what it was. "Why, that's called Serenata - isn't it great?" I asked dad who wrote it, and ran off to the library the next day, in search of Anderson albums. I was 8 years old, and my musical tastes were about to grow up.

Imagine my delight some years later, when I found this CD double set - all of the greats, as well as some real rarities, conducted by the master himself. One couldn't ask for more. The selections are all digitally remastered Decca releases, and the work MCA has done to restore them is pristine. Forty-seven pieces altogether make up the collection, and there isn't a lull in the crowd. Standards such as "Sleigh Ride", "Sandpaper Ballet", "The Syncopated Clock" and "Bugler's Holiday" are included, plus the often looked over delights, such as "Jazz Legato", "Town House Maxixe", "China Doll", and "Horse & Buggy". The list just goes on and on - were I to delve into each number, we'd be here for ages. All just great.

If you're even slightly interested in Leroy Anderson's work, make this purchase without hesitation - at this price, it's foolish to pass up on such an offer. And if you already happen to be a fan, BUY IT NOW. This set stands as a wonderful testimony to Anderson's grace and gifts as both a composer and conductor - it's nothing short of a tribute to his legacy. I have a lot to thank Leroy Anderson for in regards to the music I'm so passionate about today - his music opened new doors for me, and I'll always be so grateful for it. I'm so happy that this collection is available, knowing that it will surely do the same for others.

A "Desert Island" Album.......2003-02-11

I have known for quite a few years that Leroy Anderson had recorded most of his music (with a studio pick-up orchestra), but it wasn't until I heard these two discs that I realized just how fine a conductor he was. No other conductor, even Arthur Fiedler or Frederick Fennell, ever matched the bravura and "rightness" that Anderson brought to these encore pieces. Of all the many versions of "Sleigh Ride" I own, this is the recording that makes my jaw drop (and probably the fastest "Ride" one is apt to take). True, the sound is a bit dry and "studio-ish", but that only serves to bring out the detail and snap of each of these works.
I can't ever imagine my collection without these near-perfect discs. Grab 'em while you can!

The ultimate Anderson Collection.......2002-12-07

I had no idea this two disc set of Leroy Anderson compositions conducted by the composer himself had been reissued. Enjoy "light classics"? Then GRAB IT! It is the most comprehensive collection of his works and considering the age of these vintage stereo recordings the sound is just remarkable. It's all here folks: "Sleigh Ride", "The Synchopated Clock", "Bugler's Holiday", "Fiddle Faddle", and all those light classics made famous by Arthur Feidler and the Boston Pops. Plus the ones you may never have heard, all equally creative and fun.

One comment: The last two items on disc one and the last six on disc two (the Scottish and Irish suites) are recorded in mono and predate the other recordings. But don't let that stop you. They are clean recordings all the same. 47 tracks. Over two hours of music. For lovers of light classics in general and Leroy Anderson in particular, you can't get a better collection than this.

Only half the songs of the original set!!.......2007-01-17

Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!

A Good Basic Collection.......2006-02-11

This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.

My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).

Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.

Poor Quality.......2005-12-05

The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.

I returned this to New Castle. Box 15550. I have heard nothing. The date of the return was 15/05/07 from my Throop postoffice in Dorset. I sent it recorded delivery. Over to you. There was nothing on the return screen to explain the fault. ie faulty track. So after many attempts to get intouch I sent it to the address on the paper inside the parcel. Please help.
I am a Grandmother so I am over 13 ???

Awesome Collection!.......2006-07-04

As a young boy I would play my trumpet from my father's old Arban's method book. My private trumpet teacher (Mr. Bonfield) would love to play duets with me from the Merchant of Venice. One day I heard Wynoton Marsailas play a a flawless rendition of The Merchant of Venice on my local clasical radio station. It was flawless and brought back many fond memories of studiying the trumpet as a youngster with my beloved teacher. This collection contains that rendition and a wide selecton of clasical trumpet pieces. You may not recognize every song, but you will enjoy the high quality of the music and artists on this CD. Anyone looking for an introduction to quality, classical, trumpet music should buy this CD. The price also makes this an affordable must for any true trumpet fan.

This is a splendid anthology of music. Traditional Baroque and orchestral pieces up front, and a few surprises nearer the end. A splendid work. The price makes it a steal. Add it to your cart. You will not be sorry. There is technical excellence - peace in some of the songs and real energy in others.

Wonderful edition to your trumpet collection........2003-10-21

Trumpet fans should all own this album, that is if they don't already own all of the pieces on here on separate recordings (it would take a while to obtain them all). This recording features a bunch of great classical trumpeters and innovators such as Armando Ghitalla, Phil Smith, Wynton Marsalis, Mark Gould, H.L. Clarke, Ron Romm, Charles Schleuter, William Vacchiano, and more. Great performances of Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2", the Haydn and Hummel Concertos, Wynton's excellent performance of J.B. Arban's "The Carnival Of Venice", the New England Brass Ensemble performing "Trumpet Voluntary", a very good job done by a Baroque Orchestra of the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets, "The Three Aces" played by H.L. Clarke, and Leroy Anderson's classic "A Bugler's Holiday".

Overall this is a great listen to some of the best trumpet players of all-time in this idiom. All of the pieces are impeccably played by some of the best. I didn't discover this tape in my collection until recently, and boy I'm glad I did.

Quite the CD.......2001-04-17

If I were you, I would buy this CD. It is a diverse collection of amazing performances of quintessential pieces - an important addition to any classical music fan's collection. Heck, even if you're not big on classical music (or trumpet music or brass music or music at all) you should purchase this compact disc.
