5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Down-home harmonies.......2007-01-20

Excellent collection of old-time gospel music with sublime harmonies. This music says "home" to many of my family members, who grew up hearing these songs in church. We still sing them at family reunions. The songs are beautiful to our "hillbilly" ears. These CDs provided a special Christmas gift for my mom, who used to sing many of these songs in a church quartet with her late father in the 1930s. Her voice is still great, and she enjoys singing along with Grampa Jones and the boys. Even if you aren't religious, and even if you didn't like the TV show "Hee Haw," these beautiful gospel songs can carry you away. I'm going to order more of these for family and friends.

5 out of 5 stars brings back memories.......2007-01-19

the gospel portion of hee haw was always my favorite. good to see the music on the market. Remindful of childhood memories of going to church with our parents (who both passed away in 2000 age 55 and 59).

2 out of 5 stars Sadly, Not What I Was Expecting!.......2006-10-01

I remember the Hee Haw Gospel Quartet song-segments on the old Hee Haw show as a chance to hear country Gospel done in a reverent, simple, downhome way complete with Roy Clark's excellent, understated, country, flat-top picking. The harmonies and solo instrumentation were excellent and when I saw this Hee Haw Gospel Quartet CD being released, I thought, Wow! The old song-performances from the show in remastered form! I eagerly awaited my purchase.

Well, it came today, and I popped it in my player and with the first notes from the first song, I was disappointed! I hit my next-track button and more of the same disappointment was there. Folks, what has been done by the producers is to embellish the old performances with extra instrumentation, additional choruses, and reverb. To me, this has all but obliterated the charm and excellent simple performances that I remember from the old show.

If you a have a fondness for these old Hee Haw Gospel Quartet song-performances, rather than buy this CD, purchase the DVDs of the Hee Haw shows and enjoy these songs in the simple and reverent way they were intended to be heard and viewed.

5 out of 5 stars COUNTRY GOSPEL AT ITS BEST.......2002-09-01

This is REAL Country Gospel at its BEST. The CD is absolutely fantastic. Song after song brings back fond memories of the Hee Haw television program. The music will lift your spirit and provides comfort for the troubles of the past as well as courage for the challenges of today. The richness and quality of the music was not "mixed" out in the studio. It is just like having Buck, Roy, Grandpa Jones and Kenny sitting on your front porch singing these songs just for you. If you like Country Music, Country Gospel or are a Hee Haw fan this is a MUST HAVE CD. You won't be sorry you made the purchase...I'm not!!!!

1 out of 5 stars What happened to the original recordings?.......2001-08-14

The producers seemed to desire money rather than the genuine. What's an electric guitar doing in the background? Are the singers really the original four? There's little in the music industry that promotes the genuine. I give this CD one star.

1 out of 5 stars Deadly awful stuff, a sacrilege.......2000-08-24

Please note what I'm writing here applies only to Vol 1 of "The best of the Hee Haw Gospel Quarter." I haven't heard Vol 2.

Some cretin, with the first volume, decided to add electric guitar and piano to all the cuts, and in the process of doing so, destroyed all the authenticity of what began as masterful renditions of traditional church music.

Once upon a time I owned all the HHGQ albums --seems like there were at least six of them-- on cassette, and when they either wore out or were borrowed and never returned I bought Vol one of "The Best of..." I've seldom, if ever, been so disappointed in a music purchase. Doesn't deserve any stars at all, but Amazon insists on at least one.

I gave the CD to my sister, who is not a particularly discerning listener, and to be honest, she loves it. But if you think Vol 1 of "The Best of the Hee Haw Gospel Quartet"represents what used to be played on the TV show, you'll be sadly mistaken.

5 out of 5 stars Comforting Hand and Memories.......2000-06-24

As a child, I can remember my grandparents watching Hee Haw. I recently lost my grandfather and I decided to buy these CD's to help comfort me. I can't go one day without listening to them! They bring back memories of my childhood and the songs have helped me deal with his death. I loved them soooo much, I bought my mother and grandmother copies too! They love them as well! I hope there will be a Vol 3 & 4!

5 out of 5 stars Great Singing.......2000-03-18

I am a diehard HEE HAW fan and I am always inserch of great music rom HEE HAW and I recamend this one to anyone who is a quartet fan. I always did like the HEE HAW Quartet.

4 out of 5 stars Great Stuff.......2006-04-21

This album is a collection of songs from from the very early days of the Birthday Party, many of which were recorded as the band "The Boys Next Door," (circa 1979) but this is definitely some good stuff. Songs like "the Friend Catcher" and "The Hair Shirt" definitely reflect the band's later darker direction. It doesn't end there; "A Catholic Skin," is a pounding rhythm-based jam, (read: deep, bass centered groove) as is the final track "The Hair Shirt,". For those looking for some great Post-Punk music this is an exceptional beginning. The Birthday Party were an intense group by design, and as an introduction into later, more chaotic works this re-release functions extremely well. Death rock owes much to these guys and I, for one, love them. Those who appreciate Nick Cave should get a lot out of this. Follow this album with the Mutiny/Bad Seed EP. The Birthday Party were immensely important, whether or not you like their insane songs. Listen. Learn and judge for yourself, no one else can say anymore than that.

4 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-04-03

I must admit; I do not own all of The Birthday Party's Cd's but from the one's that I do own (Mutiny, Prayers On Fire, and Hee-haw) this one is probley my favorite. It feels so raw and outlandish...if you really like to hear a band "give it their all" I'd say you should deffintly think about picking up this album if you get the chance.

5 out of 5 stars dark, evil and catchy.......2002-03-05

i love this album for it's raw simplicity(i find i've been saying that a lot on here...i think it's my style...anywho ;-)...). the songs on Hew Haw(culled partly from when the Party was the Boys Next Door, and the rest from the first Party album) are very catchy, very...uh...gothic, indeed, and very punk. it's like the Banshees and Bauhaus' first albums...very jaggedly, staggering dark dirges and full-on Stooges-type jams set to a gloomy minor key. Cave's vocals and lyricism is(was at the time) abstract and benign, but most of the songs are metaphoric: clarinets, birthday parties, clocks, hats, etc. the names and content may seem forced and somewhat silly, but they grow on you quickly as a whole, creating a very cryptic pop sound. there is lots of atmosphere on this album...achingly sustained distortion painting scenes that linger, creep, rattle and ramble. my favs are probably "The Friend Catcher", "Death By Drowning", "The Red Clock" and "Riddle House", but i usually listen to the album as a whole, so i guess everything is pretty great. don't get this album if you are looking for a "Nick Cave album"...this was before Nick Cave found Nick Cave; just think of it as a great debut for a great post punk group.

3 out of 5 stars Early Nick May Not Be Much of a Party to Some.......2001-04-24

And so here it is, (minus the Boys Next Door's 1978 'Door Door' album) for all practical purposes the beginning of Nick Cave's enigmatic, three decade long career. It's hard to imagine, listening to this 40 some odd minutes of noise and vile, that the very same person would be, twenty-two odd years later, mentioned in the same breath as Bob Dylan and easily considered the "Dark Laureate" successor to Leonard Cohen. As you may gather, just because it is first does NOT make it the place most will want to start. Once you're more familiar with Cave, however, it puts many puzzle pieces into place.

Not really an album proper, this release (originally co-credited to the Boys Next Door AND the Birthday Party) gathers a Boys Next Door ep and single, and two Birthday Party singles recorded in late 1979 and early 1980. What's the difference between the two bands you might ask? Almost nothing. The band personnel (and it is one of the great post-punk lineups) is the same, though the biggest difference is the move in early 1980 to London where the name change occurs and the latter singles are released. It's those last singles that you encounter first on the cd, and that's fair enough. Here the band collects its messy Swell Maps/Fall/No Wave inspired clatter into a genuinely catchy sound. "The Friend Catcher" and "Mr. Clarinet" (both as lyrically obtuse as they sound) are bonafied art-punk classics. The final Boys Next Door single ("Happy Birthday"/"Riddle House" not credited in the liner notes!)is just behind these two, finding our Aussie expatriates learning their craft well. At the end of it all, we are, uh, "graced" with the 'Hee-Haw' ep in its chaotic entirety. A good history lesson I suppose, but mostly lots of Rowland S. Howard's feedback with little of the hooks he'd soon have down, and Cave taking that shriek of his just a little too far, too often. Not bad, necessarily and perhaps best served as the soundtrack to late night car repossessing.

Overall, an interesting introduction to one of the major songwriters of the last twenty years and a painfully good time to those who like their music heavy on the LOUD.

Album Description

Considering today's Red State Blue State dialectic, you'd think Alternative Tentacles with our "San Francisco values" and a Southern-fried party band from Baton Rouge (which translates to "RED stick"), Louisiana would be like oil and wateran assumption that couldn't be more wrong! AT and Dash Rip Rock continue the joint enterprise that began with their twenty-year retrospective Recyclone (Virus 329) in 2005 with Hee Haw Hell, an all new album by the undisputed kings of Southern country punk. Hee Haw Hell blows any stereotypes about Red staters, punks, and country rockers out of the water with the genius of its conceit: it's a country punk opera based onÉDante's Inferno! With spoken parts and good ol' rock-n-roll, Dash Rip Rock tells the story of Donkey's tour of Hell (populated by ghosts of Lynrd Skynrd and hippie jam bands) with Ol' Virg. As if a country-punkified version of a 14th century Italian epic poem isn't over the top, guest stars Mojo Nixon and Jello Biafra among others guarantee that Hee Haw Hell will be a thespian and musical piece de resistance. If you can party to a Southern rock legend AND learn about Dante by osmosis at the same time, then what you got there is called a win-win situation.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great..........2007-04-12

Dash Rip Rock, even though well into middle age has put out several good albums in recent years. Hee Haw Hell is slightly below the quality of PayDirt or Sonic Boom. The songs across the board just aren't as strong and the production is lacking. The theme of the record, a hillbilly rock opera, is relatively well realized with several notable guest stars including Jello Biafra and Mojo Nixon. But, again, the songs as a whole don't live up to the promise of the idea. Still worth checking out if your a fan. Good stuff to be had here for the long-time fan, just not as much as I'd like.

5 out of 5 stars What a hell funny Hee Haw Hell !.......2007-03-28

This album is a masterpiece of southern rock, psycho-rockabilly, and cow punk music. Filled with incomparble senses of humor and fan of wits, not to mention, melodies of tunes are great! I hope if I could go to Nashville or New Orleans, to see DASH'S show!

4 out of 5 stars Cow Punk Lives in Hee Haw Hell!.......2007-03-14

Well, it's a concept album. Thank God it's a concept album by a band that does not take it self seriously. This ain't 2112 - once again - thank God! The first time I listened to Hee Haw Hell I thought, " I could live without the freakin' poems. But then I though, "Your missing the concept, dingus, or maybe just the point." Here's the deal - no one else is doing crazy stuff like this. It's Dash and it sounds great. Hee Haw Hell is frequently goofy and sometimes down right juvenile and I would have it no other way. Buy it and go see them live!

This consolidation of Nick Cave and Co.'s first two releases as The Birthday Party, the Hee-Haw EP and The Birthday Party LP, is a masterpiece of macabre, chilling dirges, with haunting vocals, and the songwriting- the notes- are sheer genius. The burning, profoundly eerie guitar openings and frantic, howled pleas haunt me in my sleep and play over and over again in my head. And I love it. This album displays less of the grimy, blues-rockabilly influence that came to characterize The Birthday Party's later releases, and it also lacks the thrashing feedback. Instead, they utilize tight, anxious guitar riffs and distinctly Arabian-influenced horn solos. It sounds much cleaner and more solemn; to me, it sounds as if they were focusing more on music-writing and instrumentation, and I see this as a good thing. This is, in my opinion, the best of all their releases. If it does not chill you and immerse you in its ubiquitous Edward Gorey-like eerieness, check your pulse. If you find yourself deceased, you might like it even more.

You won't be sorry you made the purchase...I'm not!

5 out of 5 stars A great offering of country gospel.......2001-08-24

The Hee Haw Gospel Quartet has recorded what I want to hear. Real, simple, honest gospel. The type of music I grew up hearing my mother sing. Music with comforting meaning to me. It is perfect for when the stress of living a fast-paced life catches up with you. No orchestra, no mechanical sounding background, just four talented men singing songs that they have probably sung all of their lives. Songs that you can tell they love too. This type of music is sadly becoming more and more rare.

        2 out of 5 stars Dave's Opinion.......2001-08-14

This album was ruined by dubbed-in music in most songs. Simply RUINED. On most songs for example, the music is so loud, the songs can't be heard. Had I known that, I certainly would not have bought it. I don't like it.
