5 out of 5 stars An album that warrants repeat listens........2007-05-11

I first came across this album when it was released it 1990, I was 16 and my cousin had it on cassette. It stuck with me over the years and about 3 years ago I looked for it on CD. I think it was out of print, but it was re-released a couple of years ago, at which point I snapped it up. Lately, I have been listening to this disc almosy every day. It has a positive message and Wallinger opens himself up on the disc, talking about personal issues that few pop practitioners touch, especially the spiritual/religious questions he ponders on "God on My Side." A great pop disc which deserves a wider audience.

I have tried several times to write a review of this album and each time I come up empty. This album represents so many things to me it's hard to sort it all out. First and foremost, it served as the soundtrack to a beautiful time in my life, one that a person never forgets, but should that necessarily preclude an objective review of what is otherwise one of the finest albums of the nineties?

In my case, yes.

5 out of 5 stars If 6 Were 5..........2006-11-04

...Or, "I'd Give This CD a 6 If The Scale Went to 6". World Party's second and best album, with Way Down Now and Put The Message In The Box, plus a host of other solid, pure pop/rock/soul tunes that don't fit handily into any one particular classification, yet together they make a very cohesive, compelling listen. Karl Wallinger's writing at its best.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album That Radio Never Played.......2006-06-14

A friend gave me a tape of "Goodbye Jumbo" with the comment "This is the best album that radio never played." I gave the tape a listen and the more times I played it, the better and better it got. There are echos of other bands here, but that's NOT to say that World Party rips off other bands' sounds. I'm only saying that there's a "sound" that certain bands have that one can also find on this album....and that "sound" is good! "When The Rainbow Comes" got me hooked, but I grew into the rest of the tracks and now enjoy the whole work. The newly re-mastered CD sounds great (a heck of a lot better than that old tape) and I think those who enjoy good production work will appreciate this one. Okay, so you probably never heard any of these songs on the radio...neither had I. But trust me, you won't be disappointed by checking out what one of the other reviewers called "A 90s Gem."

5 out of 5 stars A 90's gem........2006-05-02

"Goodbye Jumbo" is one of the most overlooked classics of the 1990's. Karl Wallinger, formerly the keyboardist for the Waterboys, has created a cd that highlights his influences (the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Sly & the Family Stone, Dylan), but has managed to create his own distinct style. Unlike his first cd, "Private Revolution, which was a one-man show, he has enlisted the help of a three-piece band. There is a much more cohesive feel to "Goodbye Jumbo". It's a very complex, layered cd with lots of attention to detail. Wallinger is quite the perfectionist, but he proves that it's worth it.

Wallinger's heartfelt lyrics, coupled with overly catchy rhythms, drive this cd. He covers topics like the environment, love and religion, but keeps a very positive mood throughout the record. The sequencing of the songs is great and it creates a certain ebb and flow that makes the cd even more listenable. "Way Down Now" is quite possibly one of the best Britpop songs to emerge from England in the past 20 years. It was, along with "Put The Message In The Box", a minor college hit in the U.S., but unfortunately, never struck a chord with the mainsteam. Other outstanding tracks on the album include the opener, "Is It Too Late?", the sexy "Ain't Gonna Come Till I'm Ready", the upbeat "Take It Up", the haunting "When The Rainbow Comes" and the soulful "Sweet Soul Dream".

In addition to having hired a full band, there are also guest appearances by Waterboy's violinist, Steve Wickham, and Sinead O'Connor, who lends her vocals to the ballad "Sweet Soul Dream".

In a perfect world, everyone would know about World Party and Oasis would be a footnote in musical history. From beginning to end, it is one of the most consistent cd's I've ever heard. I enjoy it just as much now as I did when I bought it in 1990. This new, remastered version certainly bolsters the sound and I'm glad that I can hear even more of the nuances. This is definitely a cd that should be in every music lovers collection!

5 out of 5 stars "Is It Too Late?" to enjoy this classic.......2006-05-15

No! I can remember in the late eighties hearing "Ship Of Fools" on the college radio station and being absolutely floored. I'm not going to bash on the decade like many others do but this song floated up in an oasis of the musical landscape at that time. Never bought the CD in fact could not even find. But a couple of years later, a neighbor had a cassette of Goodbye Jumbo and after he loaned it to me, I was hooked. Karl Wallinger who is essentially World Party mixed up all of his late sixties and seventies influences into a giant pot and created this classic. Every song is a winner and sounds as fresh today as it did in the early nineties. If you are a fan of seventies rock, give this a try. I have never really heard anything like this but when I heard You Get What You Give by the New Radicals, I actually thought World Party had released a new Cd. The rest of that Cd is not as good but I still strongly recommend that too.

5 out of 5 stars World Party - Goodbye Jumbo.......2005-09-15

I don't understand why this CD is limited for purchase. I believe Rolling Stone gave it "Best Album of the Year" around 1990. Great example of music of the time and a prelude of future styles of music. $50.00 for a "rare" CD of this music? Crazy. Get it on CD that is accessible so all can enjoy it. Uplifting and an easy flow throughout. A rarity now when most CD's are so choppy there is absolutely no continuity whatsoever.

Hey, I'm 50 years old, and I can listen to this great collection of timeless songs over, and over, and over again, and always be amazed at how good this man is and how fresh the music sounds. Its the only music I even remember from the 90's. If you have not listened, you are missing out.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You World- For this Album.......2004-10-23

Hey, I'm 12 years old. You may think I'm some punk kid, but I'm not. My parents came across this album by chance, and I love it. EVERY song is absolutely great! A must-have for any rock music fan. Every song is different, but still extrordinary. Amazing. You HAVE to get this CD.

    4 out of 5 stars Hello Jumbo........2004-04-28

Even though my favorite "World Party" song is "Is It Like Today", this is the album I like most. Overall just a great listen. The most well known song here is "Put The Message In A Box", which is incredibly catchy, and I believe "Way Down Now" was a minor hit as well. This band (or guy) has numerous obvious influences, but I think sounds most like "The Jayhawks" to me. I can't understand why all these albums are import only, I guess they're low sellers. It would be nice if "World Party" released a collection sometime too.

5 out of 5 stars One Man's Opinion: The Best CD of the 90's.......2004-02-05

I have a rather short list of "beginning-to-end" albums; that is, albums that I can listen to from beginning to end without a single song letting me down. This album is near the top of my list, and as close to a perfect pop-rock album as one can hope to get. Every single track contained here could stand alone as a pop classic, it's simply that rich a record. This is to my mind, the best CD of the 1990's. Yes, Wallinger borrows liberally from his influences (the "oo-oooo" chorus in "Way Down Now" is a direct steal from the Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil"), but that doesn't diminish the genius of the songwriting. Echoes of the Beatles, Stones, Sly Stone, Van Morrison, among others, can be heard here. This is a rich, rocking, soulful, funky, recording. Do yourself a favor and add it to your collection. I, too, don't understand why it's only available as an import, but the DVD can only be a pleasant bonus. Buy it anyway.

5 out of 5 stars The Band That Should Be King.......2003-07-19

Number 12 on Dan's Top 25 - World Party: Goodbye Jumbo is a modern pop masterpiece which sounds FRESHER today than the day it was released. Does that sound trite? Maybe so, but in this case it's actual, factual: everything is satisfactual. The IMPORT (Seaview) version adds "higher resolution" on ordinary CD players. That's "Beverly Hillbillyspeak" for: them new fangled machines dun gone 'n made Cuz'n Karl a might better! Well, doggies!"* I are a coledge gradjeate but I ain't no audiomafile. Jed, the top end and (more importantly) the bottom end finally sounds "right." (I always wondered where the BASS was the first go 'round. Well, FOUND IT!) This was the CD which was supposed to break Karl Wallinger's one man studio, a big star. But like with Alex's "Big Star" -- it never happened. The songs were always great from start to finish, but NOW, you not only get better sound, you get something even cooler: three bonus videos. Peter Gabriel ostensibly redid his entire catalogue because he didn't like the mix of the Fripp produced Self Titled CD AKA II AKA Scratch AKA (the one, unless you're a Gabriel nut, you look at and say HUH)? Only the L.E. LP type CD versions give you some bang for the buck. Not so, with England's lost son, Karl. Mr. Wallinger provides videos in all the World Party reissues. Get 'em (clearing throat) whilst one still is able. * All Hail BH! RIP. Buddy Ebsen, we hardly knew ye! Sob.
