4 out of 5 stars Great start-up album!.......2005-09-15

I first heard of World Leader Pretend because I work as a DJ at Tulane's WTUL radio station in New Orleans and someone knew one of the band members, but the CD is an incredible look at the only original group to come out of New Orleans that isn't jazz, blues, cajun, funk, or cash money. I just picked up their new CD now that they've signed with a major record company (Warner Bros.) and i do find that their sound is more polished, and slightly more mainstream making me yearn for Fit for Faded, a CD which abounds with style and edge. There's no defining World Leader Pretend's sound; not necessarily comparable to Radiohead, REM, Coldplay, or even Neil Diamond (as ive heard) as they bring a sound all their own. Great CD!

5 out of 5 stars up and coming.......2005-02-25

This album was written when these guys were 17. Yes you can hear the influence of Radiohead, but it is not a rip. These guys are amazingly talented and widely anticipated to make it big. They are an excellent band that will surely grow when Punches is released.

2 out of 5 stars Are these cover songs?.......2004-07-16

I was really let down. This sounds like the Brittney Spears pop version of Radiohead mixed with Coldplay mixed with REM. And besides, how terrible of a band name is this? When you try and sound like Stipe, DON'T NAME YOUR BAND AFTER AN REM SONG!

There isn't anything terribly original on this album, its very clear what this band is influenced by. The production is pretty outstanding I will say, but clearly these guys are a studio band and would probably stink up the stage live.

Lyrics are pretty rancid, there is plenty of Thom Yorke here which makes them sound like a Radiohead coverband spinoff that took a few Radiohead tracks and changed them around a little to make new songs.

All in all this isn't all that great. It won't stand the test of time, but in a world where the majors are just signing marketable crap to sell to kids, I'm sure kids would fall for this brand of ripoff rock. Very much a band for the moment that will not be around or make any sort of impression in the minds and ears of true music fans. This is cheese rock.
