Customer Reviews:
good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27
We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.
memories.......2007-02-22
This cd is excellent it has a lot of very good music and true to the original sound, Am getting a lot of enjoyment, highly recomended
TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13
This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.
TV themes.......2006-07-05
Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.
Deja Vu.......2006-02-17
Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

Album Description
"With melodies full of sunshine & lyrics dipped in darkness, Australia's Beautiful Girls graft a heady modern groove onto something Black Uhuru and others began." -- RELIX
"I have had an opportunity to play with the Beautiful Girls over the last few years and they always connect with a cool, groovin', summertime vibe!" -- G LOVE
"With the melodies of Ben Harper and the sheer power of Bob Marley in moments, you can listen to the vocals of Mat McHugh all night." -- SNAP (Australia)
The Beautiful Girls are back with Water, their second U.S. release on Cornerstone RAS. After releasing last year's We're Already Gone to amazing reviews and touring the nation to support it, the guys from down under knew a follow-up album and another tour was a no-brainer. Taking songs from their extensive Aussie catalog, they put together this eleven-song gem that takes you on a kiwi holiday filled with smooth guitars and soothing vocals. Singer/songwriter Mat McHugh really shows off his range with feel-good tracks "Music" and "Good Times" while expressing personal heartbreak on a track like "Need to Give This Broken Heart Away." Songs for every mood await you on this triumphant sophomore release from everyone's favorite Australian import since Yahoo Serious ...ok, Mel Gibson ... ok, Fosters. Hey, what do you know--The Beautiful Girls ARE everyone's favorite Australian export after all!

If you're fans of G. Love, Jack Johnson, & Ben Harper, then this is a must for your collection! I've bought every release they've made available in the States and every one has been fantastic. If you like these guys, I would also recommend checking out the John Butler Trio, another amazing Aussie group.

Customer Reviews:
I love it and I give it as a gift.......2006-12-11
This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by McCartney. They are new to me and I love them. Disk 1 ends with "Jerusalem" and Disk 2 ends with "Land of Hope and Glory." As an American I rarely hear these and I am so glad they were included. I believe this album was intended to help popularize choral music and I believe the selections do fine job towards that end.
I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.
"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.
MarMSED.......2005-08-27
The music selections are extraordinary. The only problem has to do with the balance of sound. There are some parts that are very loud, and some that are so very soft. You have to continually adjust the volume.
Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24
Well, this CD isn't horrible by any stretch, but it is irritating to someone who's more than a casual listener of choral music. I'm by no means as musically "literate" as many reviewers out there, but I have a collection of probably twenty-five or thirty choral CD's and this is one that will probably be gathering dust in the back of the CD book.
The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.
Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.
Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

Unbelievable.......2007-03-06
I can NOT express in words the joy that I am experiencing listening to this album(and I'm not even under the influence). Refreshing, pure, melodic, and every other positive quality in all of the previous reviews. I personally enjoy this more than the "We're Already Gone" album. It has more of a Caribbean feel. Heavy regga overtones. Good but this one has the beachier more relaxed feeling that I love oh so much.
Very good.......2006-11-06
I am a big fan of Jack Johnson and bought this CD on a reccomendation. It is a chilled-out lyric focused album perfect for summertime.
An Amazing CD..........2006-03-01
Wow, I did not expect to hear this. Who ARE these guys? I was hesitant at first to order it because there was no way to hear any of the tracks, but I knew who Mason Jennings was and I liked his style so I took a chance. Unbelievable! This is album is completely stripped down, you can practically hear them recording in someone's basement. They've got a funky, chilled-out, reggae/rock vibe and soulful lyrics. This CD is a must-have if you like Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Mason Jennings, etc. or if you just love great acoustic music.
Hidden Treasure.......2006-02-27
If you are a fan of Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, etc.. you will love this album. I was hesistant to purchase this at first, since I had never heard anything about the band, but I ended up making a great choice by purchasing this fabulous cd. It is unfortunate that there aren't more of The Beautiful Girls' albums in the US.
dreaming of summer..........2006-02-03
4 weeks ago i moved from Sydney, Australia (the hometown of the Girls) to Zurich Switzerland. I've always liked this album, its got some nice catchy acoustic pop tunes but its only since I've moved that its taken on new meaning. The Beautiful Girls are truly one of Australia's best kept secrets and one of their best live acts. While they may not have the dynamic stage presence that other aussie bands like AC/DC or Wolfmother have, these guys are really fantastic.
"Learn Yourself" was the then 3 piece's first full length album (they have since been joined by multi-instrumentalist Filipe). In many ways it is still their best release, showcasing the understated singing/songwriting talent of frontman Matt McHugh anchored down by a rootsy rhythm section consisting of Clay McDonald on bass and Mitch Connelly on drums. Despite their stripped down setup, they have produced some incredibly varied sounds: from the dark, chilled reggae of "blackbird" to the crowdstarting rhythm of "music", from the perfectly flawed harmonies on "freedom pt.2" to the morose tear-jerker "la mar".
I saw the band live on their "we're already gone" tour of 2005 and were one of the best live acts I've ever seen. They have since progressed to a more complex carribean/latin sound complete with horn sections and improvised jams, but the crowd always responded most to the songs from this album. It's rare to find a band that can find such a fantastic sound so quickly, but with their unique mixture of roots, reggae, and classic acoustic ballads, its a sound that I hope will be around for a lot longer.

"I have had an opportunity to play with the Beautiful Girls over the last few years and they always connect with a cool, groovin', summertime vibe!" - G LOVE
"They're catchy, familiar, but still refreshing." - THE DRUM MEDIA (Australia)
"With the melodies of Ben Harper and the sheer power of Bob Marley in moments, you can listen to the vocals of Mat McHugh all night." - SNAP (Australia)
We're Already Gone exceeds expectation in instrumentation, performance and songcraft. Keyboards, a brass section, melodica and harp solos move the album forward, and the rhythm section's time spent on the road is evident. It swings!
Like its predecessors, We're Already Gone is a raw album and a collision of styles. It occasionally dips into the same pool of influence as other material from TBG, but that's where the similarities end. The songs, for the most part, are darker - though there are still trademark moments of melodic beauty. Mostly, it is a collision of structure and riff; a mix of art, dub and rock.
Customer Reviews:
BOB MARLEY'S ILLEGITAMATE SONS ROCK REGGAE.......2006-10-20
I HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS BAND BEFORE I PICKED UP THE CD. I PICKED UP THIS CD BECAUSE IN ONE REVIEW IT SAID: "THE MELODIES OF BEN HARPER AND THE SHEER POWER OF BOB MARLEY." THE TRUTH IS THAT THEY ARE 100 TIMES BETTER THAN BEN HARPER, AND IF BOB MARLEY WERE ALIVE TODAY, HE WOULD HAVE THIS BAND OPEN UP FOR HIM FOREVER! BOTTOM LINE: THIS IS THE BEST CD I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE, AND I'VE HEARD OVER 100,000 CD IN MY LIFE - SO FAR. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CD FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: 1. PRACTICALLY EVERY SONG IS A FUTURE CLASSIC. 2. THE MUSICIANSHIP IS STUPENDIUS! 3. YOU WILL LOSE ABOUT 5 POUNDS A DAY FROM ALL OF THE UNCONTROLLABLE DANCING YOU WILL BE DOING ONCE YOU PRESS PLAY ON YOUR CD PLAYER. AND FINALLY, IF YOU ARE DEPRESSED IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, YOU WILL BE SMILING, HAPPY, AND 100 PERCENT CONTENT AFTER JUST ONE LISTEN TO THE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS.
instant pick me up.... this CD is a must have.......2006-08-08
i got this cd after i had "learn yourself" for about a year and i love it ten times more. this cd is not really that alike to their first album and i would reccomend buying this one first if you have never heard them because it kind of touches ground on their different talents within the group moreso than learn yourself which is mainly acoustic.

Album Description
For the past six months, the beautiful girls have been locked away in studios from sydney to l.a., putting the finishing touches on their third studio album, 'ziggurats'. The 2006 release of 'we're already gone' received rave reviews and had critics highlighting the diversity of the trio. 'ziggurats' is another curve in the band's sound. The influence of recent addition to the drum kit, bruce braybrooke, shines through, producing a rockier, heavier sound to the pop skewed tunes. Includes the first single 'i thought about you'.

An opera that deserves consideration by a major company.......2003-10-04
I became familiar with this recording of the "The Crucible" back in the 60's when it was available on the old CRI label. It was an exciting piece then and it remains one now. It has been a puzzle to me why such an opera has not been taken up and presented regularly by major companies. The music is appealing--and frequently more than that; the drama is potent and never fails to captivate; it offers wonderful opportunites to a cast of singing actors. So what's the problem?! Granted some of the liberties taken with the Arthur Miller text render certain moments dramatically unclear and the Gershwinesque strains that accompany the slave Tituba's character are certainly a mistake. Still, the work as a whole is an exciting one. Hightlights abound, with the whole of the last act being especially moving.
This is still the only recording available and, overall, it is excellent. The leads perfectly embody the roles of John and Elizabeth Proctor, while the balance of the cast, a few vocal duds notwithstanding, competently fill in the many character roles.
The CD sound is very good and far superior to my old vinyl disks.
If you've never heard "The Crucible," give this recording a chance. It is well worth your time.
Soaring majesty!.......2001-12-19
This performance is a gem. Just the soaring majesty of Frances Bible is well worth the experience. What a sadly underrated artist. The final duet with Bible and Ludgin is a lesson in passionate, searing drama and full-out singing.
a favorite opera with an old and inconsistent performance.......1999-03-23
I had the privilege of being part of a cast of this opera at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the late 70's, directed by the avuncular Herbert Wildeboor (since deceased). I've always loved the 7/8 hymn at the end of the first act. However, this performance is very uneven, including generally unfortunate singing by female leads, and bad acting (at least) by the person singing Reverend Parris. Reverend Hale and John Proctor are consistently good. And the orchestra parts, very demanding, are well handled. It astounds me that there is no new recording in all these years. I've since seen it done in Pittsburgh and know it's being done somewhere on the West Coast. While Mr. Ward's music is considered cliche by some, I prefer it much to, for example, Moore's Ballad of Baby Doe. Perhaps my affection for it is due to having the opportunity to perform it.

Oh, no, not Dein ist mein ganzes herz plus English version .......2005-01-06
Why must record companies endlessly churn out the same familiar stuff, when Tauber recorded many hundreds of songs and operatic items?
And, as another reviewer has justly indicated, at least make the CD contents audible. It's just too irritating to have to keep altering the volume because some engineer didn't bother to get the level right in the first place.
Isn't it possible for recording companies to set a common standard of volume level, particularly when the originals were recorded in a constricted dynamic?
Okay, apart from the rant, Tauber still sounds fine, but some less stale material would be nice. How about next time including some of his radio and stage recordings, such as excerpts from his final Covent Garden performance as Don Ottavio?
High in charm but low in volume........2003-03-21
Reissues of recordings by the Austrian tenor Richard Tauber are beginning to feature in the Naxos catalogue. This CD presents 18 of them and runs for 60 minutes. Of the eight Lehar items, four are sung in English, and Lehar himself is the conductor in another of them. The recordings date from 1927 to 1939. Rarities include two little songs in which Tauber provides his own piano accompaniment.
Everything Tauber attempted gets my attention. I don’t wish to hear again, however the adaptation of the Strauss waltz “G’shichten aus dem Wiener Wald” that is included here. I eagerly await a reissue of something called “Love Lost Forever More” which featured in “Blossom Time”, one of Tauber’s films.
David Lennick’s transfers are satisfactory, but the volume level is very low.

Great Album, But About Those Alternate Takes..........2006-08-31
it would have been nice if the "Powers That Be", whoever they are, had also put the original album cuts of "In Marsovia", "Down In Dear Marsovia" and "Vilia" on this CD and not just the alternate takes of these 3 songs. The absence of the album cuts of these 3 removes 2 stars from an otherwise great CD.
MERRY WIDOW Broadway style.......2004-02-03
Decca's old 78 RPM album of THE MERRY WIDOW was recorded shortly after their phenomonally successful OKLAHOMA! set and sounds like a cast album of a Broadway production. Well, why now? After all THE MERRY WIDOW made her North American premiere at the New Amsterdam theatre for 416 performances begining October 21, 1907.
Though this recording is not directly taken from any specific production, two of the male leads Felix Knight and Wilbur Evans had appeared in a 1942 staging at Carnegie Hall which may explain why both men sound so comfortable in their roles. Kitty Carlisle makes a delightful widow, a role she too had played on stage many times. She sings with a straightforward, unforced voice and enunciates the lyrics clearly. The whole performance made for an enjoyable listen when the set was new and the only problem is the occasional bit of surface noise from Decca's well worn master discs.
The 1950 set of highlights from THE STUDENT PRINCE (6 selections plus and Overture and Finale) shows what happens when singers go overboard: Though the rest of the cast is fine, Lauritz Melchior oversings the role to the point where it sounds as if he is mimicing Ezio Pinza in SOUTH PACIFIC.
In short, get this disc for THE MERRY WIDOW but go elsewhere for STUDENT PRINCE.
A (new) old Merry Widow . . ........2003-02-16
This album was available on 12" DECCA Lps for years under two separate editions. However, this time the powers that be, used the alternate and expanded takes of at least two of the best cuts. These were too lenthy for the 78's but they pack a wollop and add to the reality of the show. Vilia is expanded and the rousing "In Marsovia". This is the first time these two have seen the light of day since they were recorded . . . so I bet Kitty was surprised when she heard them.
The supporting cast is supperb with Lisette Verea being a standout. The sound is excellent . . . in fact it is such a nice treat to the ears . . .real authentic sound just the way you hear it naturally without hearing the tongue clicks and sibilants that "modern" recordings give you. This is sound as you would naturally hear it. Today's sound is more about technology than music . . . like looking at a painting and seeing all the brush strokes instead of the picture. Great CD. The other side, Student Prince is good except for Lauritz Melchior who is God awful.
A Nostalgic Visit With the Merry Widow.......2003-02-06
My ancient 78 rpm album of acetate records of this version of The Merry Widow is worn with age and over-use. So am I.
However, this reissue "digitally remastered" on a CD is like a joyous finding of an old treasure. There are many English translations of the orginal German lyrics this fine operetta and, perhaps, each listener has his or her own favorite. This performance happens to be mine. I happen to like Kitty Carlisle in the title role because I've been listening to her sing it for 60 years! I'm delighted this came out digitally remastered as it is. I wish someone could figure out how I can be digitally remastered -- just to keep up with things the way they are.

Not the Best but Good Enough.......2002-11-21
THE STUDENT PRINCE is my favorite operetta by any of the Golden Age operetta composers, and I was extremely eager to hear this version first recorded in 1950 but only now being released on CD coupled with another classic THE MERRY WIDOW. Alas, the film soundtrack with the incomparable Mario Lanza and the Columbia studio cast version with Jan Peerce still outdistance this release by a considerable margin.
The primary problem is the Prince himself sung by Danish tenor Lauritz Melchior. Melchior has all the notes and is in good voice, but his age works against him. There is no zip, no brio to the singing (which sets Lanza apart), and he seems supremely uncomfortable singing these songs in English (where Peerce excels). Peerce also has the luxury of stereo recording and the fact that his recording features the entire score, all benefits that make that release (sadly not on CD yet) the one to own.
Jane Wilson makes a youthful and lovely sounding Kathie while Lee Sweetland adds power and authority to the baritone refrains. It's not the perfect PRINCE, but it's a nice souvenir of the show's highlights.
THE MERRY WIDOW turns out surprisingly to be the better of the two operettas offered on this CD. Kitty Carlisle seems perfect casting as the title lady in question and handles her vocals admirably. Even better is bass-baritone Wilbur Evans who punches out the familiar songs with considerable power. Felix Knight adds whimsy to a couple of numbers.
These recordings, available for the first time in decades, are not the definitive versions of these shows, but it's wonderful to have them available again to familiarize ourselves with melodies which have been around longer than most of us who are eagerly listening to them.

Majors for Minors - Classical Music Nursery Rhymes.......2002-04-27
I come from a classical music background and wish to congratulate the producers of this CD. For the first time ever, to my knowledge, here is a CD that's incredibly straightforward and extremely simple - perfect material for babies and young children. By no means a classical music masterpiece but the entire easiness and simplicity is perfect to ease any child into a positive state of mind as it does with my baby and toddler. For the Bambino's, I say this is a cut above Mozart. ( Give 4 stars)
Majors for Minors- classical music nursery rhymes.......2002-04-25
...My wife and I have used the Majors for Minors series for the last three years, we have two small children and can only praise the positive results our children have had from these CD'S.
I can only assume that G Spanos is a music academic and authority on classical music, however from what I know of the research that went into this series the mucis is purely a classical interpretation and the success is actually created by sound frequencies and specfic patterns which the producers have used.
The fact that the product uses digital instruments as opposed to authentic instruments from what I understand has no bearing on how this product works.
I admit as a lover of classical music myself that there is far supeior available, however as a product designed to calm and assist with active and passive situations during a childs daily life - there is nothing better in the market (from what we know of) and we have used many other products designed for this purpose wthout success!
My knowldege of Majors for Minors workings is probably better than most average person, due to the fact that when I was in the UK on business, I read an article in a London newspaper which gave detail on how the produsers of this product went about their research and they admitted that their compilations such as the nursery rhymes and the lullabies would sound rather monotonous to the average adult, however the effect on children under three is excellent.
We challenge G Spanos or any parent with young children to use this product and not experience the incredible benefits to their children as my wife and I have found. In fact we would go as far as saying that the principles of this product should try and do alot more to make Majors for Minors more known to the rest of the world.
Classical Music Nursery Rhymes.......2002-04-19
I bought this CD for my 5th child, who has special needs when he was 5yrs old. I had struggled with 5yrs of disturbed nights; frequently up for 2hr stretches. I would play it in the sitting room whilst cuddling/rocking my son. I would concentrate my mind on the music, rocking patting, walking in time with the beat, until he slept. Because my son frequently needs attention during the night he sleeps in our room, and for the last year or so whenever he wakes at night I play this music softly, it does not disturb my husband and it gives me a focus on which to concentrate instead of mulling over the day ahead or worrying about matters. It has been our nightly friend and companion. Please send us your comments about Majors for Minors.
AVOID THIS CD.......2002-03-11
DO NOT BUY THIS CD !! This cd purports to be Classical Music Nursery Rhymes. It is nursery rhyme melodies, but completely homogenized pablum. It is not classical, it is synthesizers - the worst kind of muzak versions, with the melodies practically hidden away in the synthesized "new age" (in the worst sense of the word) background/easy listening, mellow accompaniments. It might be ok for putting kids to sleep, but I can think of much better music to do that, that is real music. If you are looking for real versions of nursery rhyme melodies, this is NOT the cd to buy.
