20: Singles & EPs '94-'96 [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
It's hard to understand how the Coral became a critical and commercial phenomenon while Gorky's remain a footnote in rock history. In the mid-'90s, the Carmarthen teenagers displayed many of the same attributes as the Coral: a faintly alarming eclecticism that usually coalesces into psychedelic folk-rock, a proud disconnection from prevailing trends, and a quirky sense of humor. While their later work is also excellent, collection of early recordings may prove to be their most satisfying set. Rustic disorientation is spattered by the odd splenetic outburst: a cover of Soft Machine's "Why Are We Sleeping?" provides a suitable map of the general territory. But the magic of Gorkys lies also their oddness and unpredictability. So "The Game of Eyes" is a baroque pop classic, roughly resembling "The Monster Mash" covered by Pink Floyd, while "Heart of Kentucky" seeks to graft Krautrock onto country music, and just about gets away with it. Daftness and naivety have rarely been so beguiling. --John Mulvey

4 out of 5 stars Crystal Gayle 20 Great Love Songs.......2006-07-03

Thanx for the quick delivery. All her greats are on here plus unknown ones, but good ones.

3 out of 5 stars Oldies but Goodies.......2005-10-17

Call me sentimental, but I love highly emotional songs, especially when sung well by a female singer who loves to sing.
As such, this album's title speaks for itself.
"Don't it make my brown eyes blue" makes my green eyes red;
"Someday soon" always elicits a tear or two;
"I still miss someone" evokes some sad memories.
Mind you, I could do without "When I dream" (too sappy even for me).
In other words, this album reflects the best of the pop-country crossover genre, of which Crystal Gayle is surely one of the originators

5 out of 5 stars A GREATEST HITS COLLECTION.......2003-06-03

In the seventies Crystal Gayle (Loretta Lynn's younger sister) was one of the most successful crossover country artists and this valuable collection explains why. It contains her massive 1977 hit Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue plus the next year's number one, Heart Mender. In addition, there are the soulful slow ballads I Still Miss Someone, Talking In Your Sleep and When I Dream, the wistful Someday Soon and another big hit, the catchy Hello I Love You. And if those weren't enough, the melodic beauties Dreaming My Dreams, Too Good To Throw Away and Cry Me A River are superb too. It's a pity the brilliant songs Why Have You Left The One You Left Me For? and Wayward Wind from the album When I Dream have been omitted, but that's my only complaint. This is a wonderful anthology of quality country-pop containing gems aplenty.

5 out of 5 stars Super Hits........2002-04-15

The BEST Crystal Gayle collection around. This album is quite generous . . . concerning some other skimpy compilations available on the market.
The recordings and Crystal's vocals are splendid.
You can never get tired of listening to "Beyond You" & "I Wanna Come Back To You".
Strictly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Humanity in Song and Generosity of Spirit.......2007-01-26

"Its knowledge is beyond intellect
And its actions are driven by compassion
Hope is wisdom"
(Excerpt from author Kirby Thibeault's poem Hope in his book titled Wealth)

Do They Know It's Christmas is an act of love and hope directed toward the betterment of all of humanity. The song was motivated by a compassion, a love for humanity, and a generosity of spirit that resonates and inspires like no other form of communication. This is the meaning of existence, and of human integrity in an active condition.

There exists on this planet individuals who have achieved what Maslow terms a state of self-actualization. These individuals exist in every nationality, in every faith, and in every walk of life.

Like a silent calling, a greater social conscience is directing itself toward the goal of the betterment of all of humanity. In essence, the seeking of higher states of spiritual awareness helps to nurture the flowering of love, hope, sincerity of thought, and understanding that otherwise would be amiss. It is a social universal conscience, a letting go of self -- a letting go of the illusion of ego in favor of a greater love... a global love... a self love... an integral identification with the feelings, hopes, and concerns of others.

We all feel it. We all know the feeling that arises when we perform acts of love, sincerity, kindness, and integrity. We all know the feeling that arises when we inspire another, when we encourage another's positive self-development, when we affirm another's self-worth and -value. Such actions contribute to the betterment of all of humanity.

"Life is about helping and caring
Not rejecting and criticizing
Learn how to accept and you will learn how to love"
(excerpt from author Kirby Thibeault's poem Awakening in his book titled Wealth)

This is the true meaning of Wealth. We all feel it in each and every moment -- with every action, deed, thought, dream, hope, reason, and word: "Accordingly, it is our responsibility as individuals and as a species to always attempt to help bring out the best in each and every one of us which is accomplished by seeing, or realizing the inherent 'wealth' that all of humankind possesses" --passage taken from Kirby Thibeault's acknowledgement section of his book titled Wealth --

These are the spiritual and inspirational views taught to me by Kirby Thibeault, author of the book "Wealth."

Do They Know It's Christmas is a song of celebration, felt within the social conscience and beyond the finite nature of existence. It is a universal act of love and caring, performed through a wisdom beyond knowledge:

"It unites humanity through its desire for good
Hope is love"
(excerpt from Kirby Thibeault's poem titled Hope from his book Wealth)

4 out of 5 stars Only one of the 3 songs is worth it........2007-01-06

The original Band Aid version of Do They Know It's Christmas is on here, and that makes the purchase of this album worth it. There are 2 other versions of the song on here - one live, and one by "Band Aid 20" ...whoever they are. The live version is pretty good...but the other one, stinks. I just replay the original song anyway. Since you can't find the song on Napster, it's worth buying if you're a fan.

3 out of 5 stars Honorable intentions, Original lineup awesome, pitiful redo.......2006-12-20

Do They Know It's Christmas? really is more of a novelty song than a Christmas tune. It was always intended to raise awareness of the famine that had swept Ethiopia in 1984. Bob Geldoff and Midge Ure and the whole Band Aid had their hearts in the right places, but in retrospect AND in foreward thinking, it's sadly a waste of time. Any money that is ever sent to the various oppressed countries in Africa never reaches those for whom it is intended. The governments are so corrupt that they steal the money for the politicians and continue to let their people suffer.

As for the 1984 song...I love it but not because of its message or because it's a lovely Christmas tune (which it is not). I love it because it is a miracle that all of the really BIG performers out of Britain (and some of them were HUGE folks!) came together and sang on this one song. You have groups of such diametrically opposed style coming together to sing for one song! How cool is that?!

Now the remake in 1984 and the one in 2004, well, they're just....not good. They're slick and empty attempts at cashing in on the fame of the first version.

In the U.S. many of these performers were not known at all, but in Britain, these groups were big stuff.

Get this for the original song and forget about the vapid remakes. Fortunately, not only do we get the original but we get the live version of the original.

1 out of 5 stars This is so overwhemingly bad.......2005-12-24

First of all, the song "Do they know it's Christmas" is one of the worst songs ever written ("there won't be snow in Africa this Christmastime" -- but when does it ever snow in Africa at Christmas?) In a continent that's mostly Muslim anyway, no, Bob, they don't know it's Christmastime because they don't celebrate the holiday. This is a patronizing, Euro-centric song with a banal melody, trite lyrics and a smug, simplistic and paternalistic sentiment. The old version was completely devoid of women singers, making it not just Euro-centric but male-centered. The original version was also geared to the young pop stars of mid-80s -- Simon Le Bon, Boy George, Bono etc.

Macca didn't sing on the original, why should he sing now? Teh question is: why is this single being re made? It was bad enough to begin with. This new version is overproduced with a hopeless attempt to be hip and current. It fails miserably.

5 out of 5 stars One of the all-time best!.......2001-06-24

I grew up on the Beatles and knew some groups before them and most all groups after them. MB20 and "Real World" rank up with the best of them. This song is one to really touch the soul. I especially enjoy it while doing a heavy exercise class--feeling great and hearing this song on top of it makes for a special experience. "Real World" is a Real Song by Real People.

4 out of 5 stars Its worth the money if ya have a cd burner or want a poster.......2001-01-14

Actually, Its worth it for me because i am one of the biggest mb20 fans in the world. +, like I said, you can add the bonus songs, acoustic live versions of "Long Day" and "3am" to an mb20 compilation, and comes with a free small poster. "Real World" is not one of mb20's greatest songs however, so i didn't give this cd a "5". Your money is better spent on "Bent" or "If You're Gone", which are better songs, with better live tracks on the singles.

    5 out of 5 stars What a Song!.......2000-07-26

This is such a great song. I recommend this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this song.......1999-04-19

I'm not sure why. It's not that original. But the enthusiasm of the band for their music comes through. What does it mean? It means, "Let's go out and sing a song." That's what current music is all about. If you want meaning, listen to some real music, like Mozart or Beethoven. But if you want some fun music to listen to, get this.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome song!.......1999-04-06

"Real World" definitely lives up to its name. It is a song which links its lyrics to everyday life. The listeners can really relate to it. It is a nice song to relax to at the end of a hard day.

4 out of 5 stars So the consensus is that "Like A Prayer" makes it worth it........2001-12-09

Echoing the opinions of the previous reviewers, I'd say that Bigod 20's cover of Madonna's "Like A Prayer" is the real reason for purchasing this single. If you like "On The Run" (and it is a worthwhile song), then try to uncover an out-of-print copy of the full length album "Steel Works!", because it's got "On The Run" plus other great songs, like their second claim to fame, "The Bog". The prolific remixes of "On The Run" on this single are fairly unoriginal and annoying after three of them in a row. "Tschirm Tschikwirk", the other non-album track, is just a lot of noise...

5 out of 5 stars Electro Industrial classic..........2000-03-21

The "Like a Prayer" is club classic at its best. Scratchy vocals and a thumping beat give this song more life and speed than Madonna ever intended. However, do not forget the A side of this single "On The Run." The Starry clubbing and Turbo mixes are a great jump start to any Saturday night clubbing. The electro beats and speed of this song will get you going and your body moving. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, Simply Amazing..........1999-10-05

...I have been obsessed with the Lyke A Virgen single since I heard it all that tyme ago... ...And I finally found a place to purchase after many a soul told me it could not be done... ...I could care less for the On The Run Mixes... ...It's LAV that I'm after...

4 out of 5 stars Get it for "Like a prayer".......1999-07-26

I must agree, the remix of "Like a prayer" is well worth the price. The other tracks are okay, but not as good as "Apotheosis" (is that even available anymore? It's awesome.)

5 out of 5 stars Buy this for the cover of "like a prayer" if nothing else.......1999-04-24

This is one of those cd's that is impossible to find, most of the people i talked to said it was discontinued, but it is well worth the six bucks for the "Like a Prayer" cover alone. The rest of the cd is quality as well, but "Like a Prayer" is definately the high point.

          5 out of 5 stars Gorky's Forever, mutha****er.......2005-12-25

I totally was turned onto these guys from a friend who found out I was completely obsessed with Belle and Sebastian. They're weird, different, totally unrelenting. I like to think of them as the other side of Super Furry Animals, and if you like SFA as much as me then you'll enjoy these guys as a companion piece. Country Folk, rock and stone age Beatles feelings. Honestly it sounds like music that they would play as background music in kindergarten when people are fingerpainting, it's fun and it's stunning. Be careful while listening you just might learn something. I still can't figure out what language they are speaking but (it's Welsh) I'm getting sick of people singing in English in my music anyway.

(I had to edit this later because the band is welsh and I didn't know that at the time I wrote this.)
