Good CD to catch a buzz and zone out to when you're in a bad mood - of course all Tricky's CD's are like that, but i felt the previous release, BLOWBACK, grew old with continued listens - 'Vulnerable' however, gets better with each listen - 'Wait for God' is an extremely wicked song w/ a tight beat, crunchy riffs and dark overtones: "I wait for god, but its very hard. I drink your blood but i'm still thirsty.."
Tricky's creative hunger is never satiated and he will always be pushing the boundaries of mood, music and sound. A true artist

It's the ultimate anti-party cd with Tricky's new discovery Constanza purring out lines about dying in a car crash and waiting for God while Tricky himself is a menacing background singer on most of the tracks.It's a great mixture of sweetness and darkness and the lyrics from the songs embed themselves in your mind from "Don't wanna stay another day with you,don't wanna lay with you" to "I'm needy,I'm greedy.." to "Where I'm from there's something wrong I don't belong." Some songs have a bouncy energy and some are just plain haunting(Car Crash) but they all add up to a perfect soundtrack for a tortured soul.

This is the most listenable of the tricky cds i think its more mainstream some of the songs are inspirational.

Being a fresh Tricky victim I only base my feelings on this man trusting what I've felt through his latest 'Vulnerable'. To jump to the end would be the best thing, so all of his art seems to depict all forms of thirst, the man is thirsty! And I truly find myself coming back to this release for personal reasons of course, but that new chick Costanza surely is a heart-breaker! Angel music. Extremely melodic as everything embraces the lightness of FLOW ladies and gentlemen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you listen to this album, just try not to think of PMT, or Nearly God, because you may be dissapointed. But this album stands pretty good alone, despite the new female vocalist who either sounds as if she's whispering the whole time or doing the vocals for some Kmart commercial (although her solo track on Tricky's Back To Mine cd sounds decent). Her voice just doenst match most of the tracks with the exception of Car Crash, where her vocals add the effect of desperation that goes well considering the theme of the song. And I cant even believe that she is rapping on Where Im From; she literally sounds as if she just got her ass kicked and is begging for help, even if she is rappin in Italian. Tricky, I know you can do better than this, or after Blowback, can you?

In the late '60s, Sinatra fan Gaye commissioned arrangements of several standards from pop-jazz composer Bobby Scott. Neither Gaye nor Scott was satisfied with the performances (though a number of the vocal tracks he cut at the time appeared on the posthumous album Romantically Yours), but in the midst of personal turmoil a decade or so later, Gaye returned to the tapes. Spinning a web of overdubbed voices, he found something in the likes of "I Won't Cry Anymore," "Funny, Not Much," and "Why Did I Choose You?" that transformed the songs into a corollary to Here, My Dear, the 1978 concept album that traced the tale of his shattered first marriage. As pained and beautiful as that set, if much less angry in its essential assumptions, Vulnerable is a brief (seven three-minute tracks plus three alternate versions) but potent document of Gaye's vocal mastery and emotional incisiveness. --Rickey Wright

I purchased this CD after reading several books about this outstanding artist. No matter how many times I listened to these songs, the reaction is always the same. A mixture of elation, yearning, beauty, appreciation and longing. He masterfully re-captured our hearts in his rendition these musical standards. Do not miss out on this experience.

I usually consider myself a Jazz/Rock head, carefully avoiding any unnecessary contact with R&B and soul music - Erykah Badu was the only exception prior my encounter with this fantastic record which really has pushed my musical awareness towards soul town. This is one of those rare pieces of music where you can listen to every number on it again and again and just feel in touch with life, the artist and generally complete.

Every composition has a dreamy timeless jazzy feel, very unlike the Marvin the radio usually plays and I am beyond baffled as to why I had to pick this CD up second hand - one would think that record people should know true art when they encounter it and release it for the rest of us to enjoy. I usually write my favorite tracks in a Amazon review but I am gonna skip this, because I simply love the entire record, it goes perfectly for a home evening, with a Gin/Tonic, a nice girl and a couple of candles. Enough said.

My favorite song on this hauntingly beautiful, jazzy work of music art is, Why Did I Choose You. But wait! All of the songs on this here mesmerizing album are my favorites. You can just hear the aching longing in his voice and, by the way, he had heaps of aching in his life. These songs are a testament to his range of vocal ability - from the heights of joy, to the depths of his wracked soul. He sang all the vocals - you can just hear him coming through - clear as a bell! I can't gush enough about this album! Though short and sweet - Marvin . . . we've never heard you better.

Ladies and gentlemen, this album is a treasure of songs Marvin recorded back in the 60's and 70's off and on...this is the type of music that he would say, "I loved the most". He wanted to be a crooner like Sinatra and Cole. Before there was "Here, My Dear" (the all time classic), there were these songs that Marvin wanted to release, but would the public buy them? People, "Vunerable" is a hit and Marvin speaks from the grave on this one. Big Ups to Motown for completing this record!! Marvin smiles on this vocal masterpiece. ..."if I had to choose again, I would still choose you". 5 Stars!!!!!

I was more afraid that I wouldn't buy it 'cuz it ain't Marvin's work, but now I love it, I know all the details behind this lost/posthumous release. Those songs incl. the alternate versions were recorded 1966 thru 1976 or '77 until Berry Gordy announced his decision not to released it in the public. According to David Ritz on the book "Divided Soul: The Life of Marvin Gaye" saying that Marvin had actually 2 or 3 songs that he think which is his best work but the other 4 songs he didn't want on there. When it was released in public in '97, everybody thought they should buy y'know there were a lot of unreleased songs that Marvin had did before he passed which I would say 1984 the year I was born. Thank God it was released posthumously on CD the first time since his last 2 recordings that were releases right after are DREAM OF A LIFETIME and ROMANTICALLY YOURS (those I should pick up). I'd already have the album "The Soulful Sound of Marvin Gaye" that incl. those songs from those album incl. his best one Midnight Love.

'specially I like every song that he did on this album incl. the alternate versions which were very interesting. I recommend this who wants to hear the jazzy side of Marvin than they do with the R&B-pop side of Marvin. Y'know people called him the black Frank Sinatra of our time or Black Haunting Eyes which I'll say.

    I first heard Renee Bondi about 8 years ago at a Women's Tea at my mother's church. I not only thought she had a remarkable testimony, but she has a crystal-clear, bell-like voice(which is a miracle in and of itself considering, as a quadriplegic, she was once told that she'd never be able to sing again!). I have all her other CDs and was really excited about getting this one.

    Even though most of the CD consists of Christian covers, she still sings them with the warmth and clarity that is her style. I especially enjoyed "On My Knees" and "Shout to the Lord." I would definitely recommend this CD to those who have not heard her sing. It's a real treat!

      It's a wonder why this wasn't released while Marvin was still here, even though this was first recorded in the late 60s/early 70s! Marvin truly shines on these standards...highlights from this release are SHE NEEDS ME, I WISH I DIDN'T LOVE YOU SO, and WHY DID I CHOOSE YOU. Don't over look this...this packaging is great!

      Great sophomore attempt by this upcoming star. A few of the songs on this CD are a bit too poppy and produced for my tastes (i.e. Self Portrait and Try So Hard) "Anywhere" captures best the beautiful writing and heartfelt simplicity of Stephanie's music. My favorite is "Let Me Know" for it's spirituality and storytelling.

          Rarely do I love an album on first listen, but this one I did. "Nowhere to Go But Crazy" was the first song I heard on a local Americana radio program and fell head over heels immediately. It is still a favorite. I only wish she would come back to Texas!!

          I've listened to a lot of wonderful (and underappreciated) women singers recently--Lucy Kaplansky, Rosie Thomas, Mindy Smith, Kasey Chambers. I've enjoyed all of their CDs. Maggie Brown easily ranks among them. Her debut CD is simply amazing. Comparisons to Bonnie Raitt and Toni Price come to mind. Maggie Brown holds her own with everyone that I've mentioned. And she is a truly gifted songwriter. Buy this CD!

          It's the rare musician who takes time off, lives a "normal" life, and actually returns to write about it. But that's exactly what the thirty-something Brown has done. As a teenager she earned the family's keep in roadhouses and honky-tonks throughout Texas, but when her mother passed away, she dropped out, married and started a family. Years later, the siren's call of music proved too strong, and as she gradually re-entered the industry, she found that the life she'd been living provided ample material.

          Her songs (she wrote eleven of these twelve) knit together the bluesy work of Bonnie Raitt and Joan Osborne (those who've never listened past Osborne's "One of Us" should take her album "Relish" out for a spin) with the twangy fusion Lucinda Williams brought to her self-titled album in 1988. There's even an occasional spark of Janis Joplin to be heard. Brown is equally at home singing confessionals with her acoustic guitar as she is belting it out in front of an electric band.

          Though technically a debut album, these are the songs and performances of a seasoned artist. Brown writes with a voice full of experience, fleshing out women on the move from failed relationships to those that should have been and never can seem to be. She contemplates the contradictions of being both a mother and a daughter, and finds both dreams and nightmares on the road. Producer Jeff Ford mixes up full-band backings with acoustic singer-songwriter settings that frame Brown perfectly to create a tremendously accomplished CD.
