Customer Reviews:
decent album.......2007-07-15
I bought this album because I am a huge fan of The Misfits, Samhain and Danzig. I didn't know what to expect.
Musically this album absolutely rocks! It's heavy and very punk but can also be melodic at times.
I am not really a fan of AFI. I know what some of their songs are about (horror punk rock) and even saw them live once back on the Danzig/Samhain tour back at the end of 1999. While they were great live (and the pit was moshing 2 seconds before the music even started) the vocals never really did it for me. I was used to Danzig's rough growl. While I didn't hate it, it was a bit different.
This CD is good but the vocals really don't do it for me. I don't hate the vocals, I just wasn't used to them. They are not so bad now.
Davey Havok wrote all the songs here. For the most part they are dark (how I like em) and the only really bad song here is Invocation. The music for it is great, but the lyrics seem very uninspired and kind of flat. But the rest of this CD is amazing.
Of Power has some great keyboards and the fast drumming by London May is incredible. Stray, Evernight and In The Hills are all a great mixture of Samhain and AFI. The title track here starts a bit slow and is followed by two even better songs in Satiate and Of Man.
Michael is clearly the best song here. The writing is awesome and this is Davey's best vocal. Purevil wasn't quite as good as the other songs, but still decent. And Invocation I have already commented on.
So i can imagine that any AFI or Samhain fan has this already. If not, I would suggest picking it up even if you're a fan on both bands or only one of them. This is a good solid CD. 4 stars for this.
Awesome CD!.......2007-02-14
This CD is so weird that it's just awesome! i love it, it's addictive. it's a perfect combo of people for this band. i swear that i read that the lead singer of the misfits was in this, but i'm not sure. i don't see or hear anything about him in it... :( oh well, awesome CD.
I love this album!.......2007-01-13
It's only been a month or two that I got this cd and it quickly became one of my favorites. Great lyrics, great vocals, great music. I highly recommend this.
Rock Superteam.......2006-11-03
If you like Afi and high energy music with a classic hard rock feel, then you will love Son of Sam. It's an ally of Danzig(misfits), Afi and Tiger Army. If you like any of those bands you will appreciate this cd. It's not for everyone have you..it's like fine wine, you must already have an aquired taste to like Son of Sam. If you do, you won't be disappointed. This is a classic cd in the staple of Rock. It also makes a good soundtrack while playing Doom or Halo. For those of you who know what I mean, get this rare cd before they are all gone.
one of my all time fav cds.......2006-01-06
This is a great album, the best part is in the lyrics, though the music is good too. The lryics are meaningful, makes you think, and has its own evil but interesting philosophy on life. Listen to "michael" and if you like it, you'll probably like all the other songs. This might not be for everyone if you don't get it.

For their follow-up to their 2001 debut, Y'All Get Scared Now, the original cast of 15--including Arab Strap's Aidan Moffat and members of Astrid, Belle and Sebastian, Mogwai, and Mull Historical Society--have been joined by a deluge of new recruits headed by Idlewild's Roddy Woomble and Teenage Fanclub's Norman Blake, swelling their number to a staggering 27. It seems every Glaswegian with a guitar has signed up to join honorary Scot and Snow Patrol singer Gary Lightbody's lo-fi folk answer to the Traveling Wilburys. The fact that Son of Evil Reindeer is infinitely more coherent and intimate than its predecessor is astounding, and Lightbody himself deserves most of the credit. Aside from Moffat's brilliantly woozy "Whodunit?" the tender words and music are all Lightbody's, and it's the Snow Patrol singer's quietly aching voice that adds melancholy to acoustic ambles "Budapest" and "Your Sweet Voice," and feeling to the country-rock grind of "You Are My Joy." With the co-op's more avant-garde noise factors reined in, the other 26 contributors are seemingly confined to minor cameos, but when the results are as touching as this, it hardly seems to matter. --Dan Gennoe

If you love Snow Patrol, you will love this........2007-01-18
This is my first Reindeer Section cd purchase and I was not disappointed. What a great cd. I highly recommend it. If you have the Snow Patrol concert dvd, you will recognize a track or two from this cd. Snow Patrol rarely covers these songs in US shows, but I am sure those of you across the pond are very familiar with them. Buy this cd!
towers above EYES OPEN.......2006-11-04
Since I already criticised that album, and since I really hate it so so much (and love Snow Patrol), I want to say again, after seeing all the befuddling reviews of high praise, that EO is the absolute worst music that Lightbody has ever released. And he obviously did it for the frigging money/fame. The two Reindeer Section Albums show how good he can be. It's beautiful, real music. And props to the other involved in these albums, of course.
Few good songs.......2006-03-16
Pretty good CD, has a few good songs, sometime a little slow though...
Y'all Sound better now ya hear.......2006-02-26
I found this album, in comparison to their first, to be more mature. There seemed to be more of a beat you could catch on to. The lyrics went beyond repeating the same line over and over, unlike their first album. 'Budapest'-track 2, is one of my favorites. Overall, i'd say it did not disappoint.
Reindeer Section: Son of Evil Reindeer (PIAS).......2006-02-07
I really behoove you to listen to Y'all Get Scared How, Hear? Before this one. I only bought this album because I was in a PIAS fix. I couldn't get the new Vitalic because it wasn't there. I couldn't buy Mogwai, because I was real skeptical about past work (I admit it!) So it was either Reindeer Section, Mr. Oizo or Llorca. They had Reindeer Section, so I picked it up only to find out that Snow Patrol's Gary Loightbodycreated one of the most charming CDs written. Most of it is just love songs, but the standouts of the album is, of course, the cheesy yet charming "You Are My Joy", the ecstatic "Cartwheels", and "Budapest" written for a baby born during the recording.
The song that sounds like it was written by an Irish Lambchop "Whodunnit" is the most wonderrul ending, because Aidan Smith of Arab Strap makes you feel as if he has been a very flawed and troubled man, and the choir behind him has blessed his beer-drenched heart the drum machine drenched "Who Told You?" and anticipating "Last Song on Blue Tape" are songs that should have been singles. The rest are interestingly executed songs about love and heartbreak, one being the fingerpicked, acoustic "Where I Fall". When Snow Patrol went back to popularize Snow Patrol, I hope he didn't know that he wrote a beautiful, and I'm using that in a serious manner, rocket of an album on his hands.

Calling this album "Clever" seems almost too dismissive.......2005-09-04
Their second album still sounds fresh today with its spikey guitars, big yet unusual sounding drums and booming vocals.
The late 80's keyboard sounds are a tad dated (as it was already a few years out of date when it was recorded). "My Past Lives",
"Worse", "Kicking" and "Song For A Girl..." are some of the best rock songs of the late 80's to be excessively played on college radio. Which may be one of a few reasons why TMJ never became a
household name. Most college radio/critics darlings never make the seemingly obvious leap to mass commercial acceptance. Being a few years ahead of their time (similarly smart-aleck bands like Weezer, Cake and Nada Surf rose to prominence a few years after TMJ's creative high) and poorly promoted by Alias (then poorly promoted by Giant) never did this talented band any favors.
Wanna hear an overload of catchy, well-written, uncomprimising power pop rock songs? Buy this album now.
one of the most underated albums of all time.......2005-08-25
they make fun of bums and even sing about clowns.that particular song "clowns" was on the movie shakes the clown which was abselutely hilarious and an all time classic off beat movie.then theres "thats a lie".i remember the video from mtv.there was a bunch of really fast moving words racing across the bottom of the screen.so,being the curious person i am,played it in slow mo.it says since no one could read it so fast that they could write all sorts of satanic stuff and cuss words and nobody would ever know.it was what got me to buy the album!they have a definate sense of humor and paved the way for bands like the child killer band nirvana and other satirists of the early 90s when grunge was in.later they play the old classic 70s song "seasons in the sun".its a bit faster and done way better than the original whiney one.the last song i really liked was train in vein about his fantasy about a playboy centerfold who likes family get togethers and aborigonees.its good fun and definately underated.
Classic CD That Has Been Criminally Ignored.......2005-07-16
This CD stands right next to their debut as another classic. They spit out pop culture references in a tour de force of muscial brilliance. The subjects are dark many times, but the music is strangely uplifting and they add humor to everything from cancer to clowns. An amazing work of art.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE SAM PUT HIS EARLIER WORK ON A CD PERHAPS A BEST OF. I CAN LISTEN TO HIM SING ALL NIGHT . IT IS SO RELAXING TO HEAR HIM. HR IS TRULEY ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE EVER HEARD.
THE BEST !!!!.......2003-03-10
Iv'e been a Sam Neely fan since 1975, and I'm thrilled to see that Sam has something new. I have all of his albums (yes, those
big round black things you play on a record player/stereo)and the
clarity of this cd is great. Sam's voice is wonderful on this
project, I especially like tracks 6 (Here I Am Again) and 7 (Love
Carries On).
Thanks Sam for the GREAT music, and hope you release something soon, we miss ya!

FROM A FRIEND AND NO. 1 FAN IN SOUTH TEXAS!.......2001-05-06
Buy it and take it home. You will be listening to "A Legend", over and over again. Sam Neely's singing and songwriting has never been better. His songwriting will truly amaze you, because he shares his own experiences with you, his fans. Sam is truly "THE SON OF THE SOUTH"! I look forward to his next, up and coming CD.
Same Birthplace, Same Year.......2000-02-03
Sam and I were born in the same town (Cuero, Texas) less than three months apart. I did not know Sam then, however, in the early 70s I became a great fan of his easy, down home music that speaks of everyday life. I have all of Sam's earlier albums and "Son of the South" is a great maturing of Sam's voice and music. I would recommend it to anyone. What can I say other than it is great music that takes me back home to the country every time I listen to it. The songs he writes and sings are of everyday life and mimic many of my own experiences. I only hope that Sam continues to furnish such great music. Also, if Sam's earlier albums were remastered and reissued on compact disc every Sam fan would have more of his great music to enjoy.
P.S. Sam's first album "Long Road To Texas" is now available on remastered CD directly from Sam at his website. Hopefully Amazon will not mind a little competition since this is a self-marketed CD of Sam's. Any Sam fans should certainly like this CD in addition to "Son Of The South". Happy listening.

Great Single From "Figure 8".......2000-11-21
This single came out a month or two before Elliot's latest album, "Figure 8". it was put out pretty low-key, but it's contents should are worth the listen. Track 1 is "Happiness" which is an amazing jump from most of his previous soft work, with some truly incredible and introspective lyrics. though the opening lines of the song seem to focus on other characters that Elliot is commenting on, the final lines of the song are repeated from a 1st person perspective of "All I used to be, will pass away and then you'll see, that all I want now is happiness for you and me". quite the emotional gesture. The second track on here is the gem "Son of Sam", but what the single does not point out is that this is the acoustic version of the song, not found on the full album. This is the track that really makes the single worth owning. Elliot even encorporates a harmonica solo into the folky story. this single is definately worth the few bucks it costs!

Good but not as good........2000-04-14
Let me just say at the outset that I love Elliott Smith and I would whole heartedly recomend any project he undertook. Check out the upcoming Figure 8 by the way. However this single seems a bit weaker than his other/older stuff. I and other fans can only hope that this is not a sign of things to come now that Elliott is with dreamworks. The single seems a bit too far on the pop side of things for me, although the more I listen to it and especially Son of Sam I have really learned to appreciate the vibe found therein. Enjoy but you might wanna get some other stuff by Elliott first.
a preview of a fantastic album.......2000-03-14
I've been lucky enough to get a copy of a copy of the new Elliott Smith album, "Figure 8"(I know someone who knows someone who has a connection). Believe me when I say it's going to be known as one of the great pop records of the past several years. The production is lush, like "XO", but the songs sound much better suited to the production this time around -- and they're better, too.Only "Waltz #1", "Baby Britain," "Oh Well Okay" and "Bottle Up and Explode" compare to the new stuff. "Happiness" and "Son of Sam" are just two of the many standout tracks on the album. "Happiness" has a great melody, a nice, reverb drenched vocal, and a kind of "Hey Jude"-like fadeout that is nicely, abruptly cut off, leaving just Elliott, his guitar, and a drum. I've heard and enjoyed the acoustic version of "Son of Sam," but it has nothing on the full band version of the album, which is the first track and is absolutely stunning. Elliott fans, you can blanch at this prospect, but "Son of Sam" is an air guitar type of rock and roll song, and in the best way possible. Get the single, get your Elliott fix, and prepare for the late April release of the incredible "Figure 8."
Good introduction to "Figure 8".......2000-03-01
I very much enjoyed this newly released single, and due to it have high hopes for the upcoming "Figure 8." The production on "Happiness" is much like that of "XO" which at first disappointed me. However I find this to be a far better production job than that of "XO". The ending of the song makes up for everything, where the full band is playing, and as if someone slapped the record to a full stop, all the keyboards, electric guitar, and backing vocals come to a stop, leaving nothing but the bass, light drums, and Elliott Smith singing and strumming. An excellent ending to this song. The second track, "Son of Sam" gives hints of Smith's earlier recordings with the two guitars and harmonica. Excellent track, and worth the price on this single, because it will likely be a full band version on "Figure 8".

Worth buying even if you have "Figure 8"..........2000-08-02
...and if you don't have it, this single provides just a taste with the first track (easily my favorite song off the album) as well as two unreleased gems. "A Living Will" is wonderful--slightly echoing XO's "Bled White." Lastly, the song that gave Figure 8 its title--yep, it's Elliott Smith doing Schoolhouse Rock, and it's gorgeous.
If it were possible to give 4.5 stars, I'd do it, but I've gotta detract because "Figure 8" is only half the song. Still, lovely, masterful work from one of the decade's finest singer/songwriters.
