Using a typically deft DJ touch, Karl Hyde and his sharp-eared cohorts flesh out a compelling collection of new textures and beats on these extrapolations from the original singles on Underworld's excellent 1999 release Beaucoup Fish. In typical remix fashion, thematic tidbits get deconstructed and rebuilt, framing familiar songs with new settings. However, Underworld's low-key tactics make these small nuggets of rhythm or intriguing melodic elements sneak up on you. Check out how the "Jedis Sugar Hit Mix" of "Jumbo" takes a naked central melody and cuts it up into snippets of synthesized bliss that gradually lend the song an entirely different texture and direction. When the song kicks into gear for real, those spare snippets are washed away with oceanic blasts of keyboard and rhythm. By stripping the original rhythms and melodies bare, most of these mixes open enticing new musical avenues, often producing song versions that match, or even surpass, their predecessors. 4 out of 5 stars Twas very impressive with some of it but it needed...more.......2004-01-09

I thought this Single Box from Underworld was worth buying only paying a total of $21.50 for it. I thought the Push Upstairs single was the best single out of all three of them (I would give it --***1/2-- stars). The Adam Beyer Remix and the Roger S. Blue Plastic People Mix were the two bests mixes out of the Push Upstairs selection. Please Help Me is one of the most beautiful tunes I've heard coming from Underworld. It starts off with pretty music and melody in the beginning with echoing voices and progresis into a nice upbeat tune. Bruce Lee was kind of a strange song when I heard it on Beaucoup Fish but after hearing the different versions on the Push Upstairs single, I have different thoughts of it now. The Micronauts Remix was very impressive with the beginning beat as it gradually progressed a minute later (I had headphones on the first time I heard it and the sort of buzzing sounds in the beginning were a bit painful to the ears having the volume loud enough) and the Dobropet version of Bruce Lee I did not get at all...felt like there was no beat or anything to it. The King Of Snake single was yet another impressive single after hearing it on Beaucoup Fish and 1992-2002 (I would give it --***-- stars). The Straight (Mate) Mix, Barking Mix, and the Fatboy Slim Remix are my favorites out of it all (Fatboy Slim is a GENIOUS). Lastly, the Jumbo single (I would give it --**1/2-- stars). Jumbo was never one of my favorites on Beaucoup Fish but the different remixes were quite good. The Future Shock World's Apart Remix was my only real favorite for it's pretty background melodies and easy beat. The rest of them sounded the same to me except for the two Jedis versions of the songs. Cups (Salt City Orchestra's Vertical Bacon Vocal) was another beautiful tune adding in the lyrics from the orignal version of Cups on Beaucoup Fish (also Everything, Everything; LIVE even though that was more dance). Cups could've been a bit shorter but overall it was great.

That's my REVIEW on Undrworld's Singles Box. Hope it helped you out if you are thinking of purchasing it somewhere wherever you live ^_^

4 out of 5 stars AN AMAZING SET FOR A DECENT PRICE!.......2001-05-24

This set includes some pretty impressive remixes. I would highly recommend this to the die-hard Underworld fan just to hear what other people can do to their already amazing songs.

The spin on the songs as usual create impressive sounds and break the mad beats, like fred flinstone jumpin around with bald feet!

Get it while you can!

-Grandad Girolamo

3 out of 5 stars casual listeners can skip it.......2001-03-12

Fans must have it. Obviously there is some filler here and a lot of stand out mixes of already amazing singles. It is really fun to put these in your CD changer and hit "random play".

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars: a great purchase for techno-hungry fans.......2001-02-02

I bought this quite a while ago and STILL am stuck on the remixes of King of Snake!!!! Fatboy Slim's is astonishing. Most everything's wearing lovely new costumes. All the big fans should have these tracks. Even some of the basic edits are awesome (notably KOS & BL -- but Jumbo does sound gutted). This is NOT a complete collection - I believe atleast five remixes are missing (King of Snake-2 missing, Push Upstairs-2 missing, Bruce Lee-1 missing). If you're diehard and wealthy, just buy all the singles/EPs; otherwise, this is an excellent purchase for the price! "Please Help Me" is sooooo beautiful!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars DJ's and Techno Purist Need Only Apply.......2000-10-28

I'm breaking rank with the rest of the reviews. Is it because I think it's an awful collection. No, it's just that it is so unlike the rest of the CD's they have put put out. It is like being in a club hearing the same song over and over again. If I was on a budget I would buy the DVD "Everything, Everything". That is an experience which it is impossible to watch sitting still- ya gotta dance! But let's say you're a DJ, this box set is a MUST for the beats.

    Product Description

By 1963, Berry Gordy and company were fine-tuning Motowns sound. Jumping on the charts were Martha & The Vandellas, with Come And Get These Memories and Heat Wave, signaling the emergence of the writing/production team Holland-Dozier-Holland. Little Stevie Wonder was No.1 with the record-breaking Fingertips (Part 2). Mary Wells You Lost The Sweetest Boy and Whats Easy For Two Is So Hard For One turned out to be a double-sided hit. The Supremes made their Top 40 chart debut. This five-CD set captures the hits and the misses during the labels fifth year of existence. It features the A-side and B-side of every single released by Motown and its subsidiaries during the high-growth phase of Detroits entertainment juggernaut. Over the course of the sets 119 tracks, you can hear The Chuck-A-Lucks and Jack Haney & Nikiter Armstrong with a couple of Cold War novelties, Martha & The Vandellas following one hit natural disaster Heat Wave with another Quicksand, and an outstanding H-D-H production The Marvelettes Locking Up My Heart that should have been a much bigger hit than it was. Leaving the fold were the Workshop Jazz, Divinity and Miracle labels; new to the company was the V.I.P. imprint. The set is bound in a scaled-down 78-rpm-era album, with cardboard sleeves to hold each of the discs, and 92 pages of rare photos, detailed annotations and liner notes. It also features a reproduction 45-rpm single from its era; in this case, its Martha & The Vandellas (Love Is Like A) Heat Wave b/w A Love Like Yours (Dont Come Knockin Every Day). Martha Reeves contributes an essay to the set detailing the artists-eye-view of life in the labels early years. Also included is an historical overview by author and scholar Craig Werner, and, as in previous volumes, copious track-by-track annotations researched by noted authors and discographers Bill Dahl and Keith Hughes.

5 out of 5 stars 10 Year Anniversary Box Set.......2007-07-04

I should start out by noting blur's status as my favorite band, which would predispose me to liking this set. And I do, let there be no doubt about that. The packaging itself is luxurious, something few bands ever have the distinction of receiving. Not only is it a collection of the singles and b-sides, but their original sleeves are all reproduced, in high-quality. It sounds silly to include that as a note, but these are gorgeous reproductions. The booklet isn't much more than a compilation of different covers for different formats of the various singles, but it's on excellent paper and is worth flipping through. All this is nice, but, obviously, the focus of the set is the music, and here's where it gets interesting. All the live b-sides are fantastic, that should be made clear. blur were a formidable live act, and their skills are in full display here. The studio b-sides vary in quality, as is the case for most bands. I found the majority of b-sides for all the singles off Leisure and Modern Life is Rubbish to be passable at best, and I didn't even get through most of them. After that, the band really hit their stride, and it's a conistently entertaining listen. Definitely not a purchase for those not familiar with the band, but for big fans, it's a must-buy.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it, but sorry it's now out of print...........2006-12-05

(repost by same reviewer, different name)
Blur may have strategically packaged all their singles and b sides in a cool case logic type packaging, divided them in 22 cds and 127 songs all in all, but it is worth it for all of you die hard blur fans. Blur singles are hard to find in America and so here is our answer. The lucky consumers will even get some live tracks. Blur's music have changed since their early years. The contents of the 22 cds will then cater to Blur fans who liked their music then and now. Each cd neatly enclosed in the singles' original cover sleeve, the whole collection may become valuable in the new millenium. Blur made collecting cd singles a joy. That's why this boxset is so essential. Every song is quality (even Rednecks is a lot of fun), but the b-sides from the Modern Life Is Rubbish era has always been my favorite. I owned all of these singles on my own at one time, but when eBay FIRST introduced to me, I remember making like 90 bucks for the 2cd set on For Tomorrow, not to forget selling Popscene for $50, and Bang and the original There's No Other Way for the same...this boxset makes the grade. I like how if there were a part1&2, it's now on the same disc. Just great stuff. The only other band I think stood the test of time like this as far as really strong b-sides is Mansun. If you haven't b-sides from them, get Kleptomania. The fans picked their 14 or 15 on disc two, but again - every song is powerful.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential Blur.......2005-08-18

Blur is, hands down, the best British rock band of the last 15 years (yes, even better than Radiohead...Blur did it FIRST, did it better, and without the ridiculous overhyping and pretension). This box set contains all of Blur's 22 singles (up to the point that this was released...they released 4 more singles....Music is My Radar, Out of Time, Crazy Beat, and Good Song) and their b-sides, all in the original sleeves. Blur is one of those bands (along with Suede) where the b-sides were usually top-notch quality, and that's borne out in this set. Check out Young and Lovely, Ultranol, Explain, No Monsters in Me, Bone Bag, Peach, Tame, Magpie, All We Want, All Your Life, and Polished Stone (just to name a few)! Fantastic. While this is hard to find, especially in America, for a true Blur fan, it's essential.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must.......2001-03-08

If you are a true Blur fan this collection is a must have. The packaging itself is superior. Very creative and thoughtful. The cover art for the CD's is high quality. The zipper case that nestles the CD's is first class. If you look closely the typical and funny thing about this set is that it comes in a plain brown box. So much for the packaging, which is an important feature for box sets. The music is what truly counts. The music speaks for itself.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars actually, good stuff.......2003-12-01

I know that there's only two songs on one disc, and here are 11 or 12 disks, but it's still good. Because this box includes a lot of good songs. Well, if I would be the producer, I would put all these songs on one disc. But still, it's only for big fans. Better get the albums, like machine head, or fireball, and I guess you know the rest of the classic deep purple albums ...

    5 out of 5 stars a Nicey for collectors.......2003-06-20

I'm STILL a Deep Purple fan. This box set is great. It is not just thye music, but the original cover art from around the world. There is even one from India. Singles A's and B's, is incomplete and has no real history. This is a must-have for collectors.

    3 out of 5 stars why again?.......2002-04-05

why again? what about the singles a's and b's cd that had been released for 4 years ago? the songs are not new.......
I used to be a big Deep purple fan for many years but I think this re - released on the small sleeves cd is a symbol of money maker from the recording company.
I said yes because the whole songs like strange kind of woman, fireball, coronarias redig, love child, you keep on miving , black night, Iam alone, Hallelujah, Hush, one more rainy day have already been appeared in the singles a and b cd. check out the cd (Singles a and b)

3 out of 5 stars just a rare Oasis thing............2006-01-16

it's just a good rare thing about Oasis, if you are a fan, you must buy it, is an interview, it is not the box that contains the singles

3 out of 5 stars This box set includes no singles.......2005-09-15

Don't be fooled...this is the singles BOX, the interview cd, and the little booklet. I thought i was getting the deal of the century, but hey, too good to be true, yea?

THERE ARE NO MUSIC CDS INCLUDED IN THIS PACKAGE.

the amazon description says 'interview only cd' as opposed to 'interview cd only'....kind of misleading.
