Interstellar travel in your headphones........2007-05-31
Well, Stargate SG.1 has finally ended after 10 seasons, and this soundtrack CD covers only the first two. I think there's room for a new CD or two, and hopefully the Stargate SG.1 people will get around to creating one.
Anyway, I've listened to this CD once so far and I was very impressed. The music really is enjoyable on its own, and I found myself listening to the Cold Lazerus music twice before I continued throught the rest of the CD.
Finally, don't think there isn't much music on this CD because of the small nunber of tracks. Many of these tracks are six to ten minutes long.
Stargate Music Album.......2007-05-12
Great CD throughout. It's a shame the show is being cancelled after 10 years but this music helps to keep the memory on.
Not as good as the 1st Music release.......2004-10-24
The best of Stargate SG-1 is infact a 9 track compilation of the 1st 2 seasons of the TV show. It's really not the best of Stargate. I rather enjoyed the 1st release namely called Music of Stargate SG-1 and the actual movie music-score. However I still enjoyed the music from several episodes of the 2nd season, most notable being the music suite of Hathor.
A fan of the TV show should be pleasantly surprised by the suites in this CD. It won't disapoint.
one for the fans.......2004-05-07
This CD is really one for the fans. If you've not watched Stargate SG-1 before, then it will be very limited in its' appeal.
I personally enjoyed the CD, as I could relate the music back to the particular episodes in which they appeared. Some of the tracks are sweet and melodic, others are more ominious, so it doesn't come up short on variety.
The music sounds, for the most part, rather sythesised (which is why, if you are used to sprawling epic soundtracks from mainstram movies, I generally don't recommend this if you have never watched the show). Tracks are usually a mixture of synthesised sounds combined with more organic notes from traditional instruments, creating a very "sci fi" sound.
This is a great CD to work and study to as it provides great background music without being too intrusive.
Sweet.......2004-02-23
This is a great CD. Just listing to it makes me feel like I'm watching the show.

Alfred Newman's Final Epic Bow.......2004-10-12
Varese Sarabande has again done credit to the genre of great film scores with their recent release of the expanded (if not full) Alfred Newman score for George Stevens' production of "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (Newman and Stevens had also worked together on "Gunga Din," one of Newman's best efforts). The film title missed the mark a bit as far as the film is concerned. This is probably not the greatest of the Bible epics, but it is an interesting entry nevertheless. For those of us who live in the area of Lake Powell and southern Utah it is a trip to view this film with its very familiar Red Rock backdrops filling in for Palestine. And the acting was in many cases first rate. Newman's score was also an enormous plus. Perhaps not one of his best, it was certainly a great score. Based largely on a major theme that is clearly reminiscent of his earlier score for "The Robe," this is a major triumph, as is this three disc presentation. Nicely packaged and produced at an unbelievable price, this is a must for film score buffs. Disc one contains the original soundtrack recording (with updated sound)including Handel's chorus from "The Messiah" which Stevens' insisted upon using instead of Newman's own ending. Curiously, Newman's choral "Exit Music" would have been a much better fit for the film and is included here. Discs two and three include the majority of Newman's original score, as he intended it. It is really majestic stuff, although much of the score took a sombre tone. I cannot wait to enjoy this score driving down the Burr Trail. It is music that mataches the grand landscape, and the greatest story ever told.
Soundtrack, entire film score and composer ~ Alfred Newman.......2004-10-10
Varese Records presents Alfred Newman's score for "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (1965/196 mins), George Stevens directs an epic that shares the story and life of Jesus Christ ~ featuring Max Von Sydow [Jesus], Dorothy McGuire [Mary], Claude Rains [Herod the Great], Charlton Heston [John the Baptist], Angela Lansbury [Claudia], Donald Pleasence [Satan, the Dark Hermit], David McCallum [Judas Iscariot], Sidney Poitier [Simon of Cyrene], Telly Savalas [Pontius Pilate], Martin Landau [Caiaphas], Robert Blake [Simon the Zealot], Jamie Farr [Thaddaeus], Roddy McDowell [Matthew], Jose Ferrer [Herod Antipas] and John Wayne [Centurion] and many more with memorable performances ~ yet at the time of release, received low praises for the director and cast.
The music, yes the music is where this film shines...Alfred Newman, one of the most respected composers of his time was given the assignment ~ it was Newman who gave us the "20th Century Fox" fanfare theme...also a number of other film scores "Anastasia", "Diary of Anne Frank", "Captain from Castile", "Gunga Din", "How The West Was Won", "How to Marry A Millionaire", "The Keys of the Kingdom", "Man of Galilee", "Mark of Zorro", "Nevada Smith", "The Razor's Edge", "The Robe", "The Song of Bernadette" and "Wuthering Heights" ~ all of them were winners.
The Greatest Story Ever Told is here complete for the very first time and has everything from "Original Soundtrack Album" and then the "Entire Film Score" on the last two discs...making this a three disc "film-score-buffs" dream come true ~ completely remastered, with liner notes that will tell all the inside scoop from author, screenwriters, director and composer...just the way we like 'em!

Absolutely mesmerizing...............2007-02-09
Nina is one of those artists that will turn out more than one masterpiece in her music career. She's a bottomless pit of ingenious creativity, and not afraid to experiment. Each song is compelling...and everytime you listen, you will hear new sounds you didn't hear before. I have not heard all of Nina's works, but this one, Fearless, Nunsexmonkrock, and In Ekstasy have to be her best works.
Very highly recommended
what the?.......2006-03-23
Nina Hagan is a good vocalist, one second she's singing very beautifuly then the next secondher voice will sound a little evil and then she will do spoken liyrics. Most of the lyrics are in German and the rest are in English. I myself prefere her to sing in German because it sounds better. Some of the songs have a dancey feel to them and some of them contain some indian music which sounds pretty good. One song I don't like is Frequenzkontrolle because it's all over the place with a lot of the vocals and the soundbytes are annoying. So uh well if you like dancey poppy music with some indian music thrown in or if it sounds interesting to you then check out this cd and give it a listen to before buying it.
Splendiforous!.......2005-01-01
I absolutely LOVE Nina, but have to agree some of her 90's albums were rather uninspired and lacked good production. She has spoken in interviews about her problems with various producers. This is one of her best albums of all time and my current favorite. The songs are:
1.Return of the Mother: excellent, techno sounding, but with incredible operatic vocals, quite emotional and powerful.
2. Der Wind Hat Mir Ein Lied Erzahlt: a gorgeous ballad with smooth, emotive vocals.
3. Schachmatt: A very catchy, addictive trance type of song. Mysterious, dark and evocative.
4. Frequenzkontrolle: My favorite on this disc! A grinding industrial tune that will have you both thinking and shaking your butt! This song is not about aliens,as stated by another reviewer, it is about how Americans think they have a free society but we actually live in "the most controlled society on this planet." It is about control and manipulation of the media and lifestyles. Bravo, Nina!
5. Poetenclub: Very pleasant, laid back, trip hop tune.
6. Hollenzug: Another favorite of mine on the album, it is great, but difficult to describe. Very passionate, mid-tempo,very danceable with a nice guitar riff holding the various elements of the song together. Sort of a folkie/pop/industrial song. A very complex, layered tune that keeps your interest. Do some of the reviewers on here even listen to the CDs? There is only one version of this song on the disc.
7. Schuttel Mich: One of Nina's more cartoonish songs with silly vocals. Fun, cute, silly, danceable.
8. Yes Sir: Another of the more cartoonish songs, very fast, upbeat, swirly and yes, good for dancing.
9. Hand Grenade: A more challenging song that requires repeated listening. At first, it seems very simplistic, but it grows on you. This is one of the more political songs, about Nina's (and many others) belief that it is not AIDS that is fatal, but the drugs they use to treat it that ultimately, kill people.
10. He Shiva Shankara: Yes, this song is a little weaker than some of the others and not in the same musical style. Still, I don't agree with the reviewer who said he would not purchase further CDs if she included songs like this. It is a simple devotional hymn, yet pleasant enough. Nina obviously wanted it on the CD to reflect her spiritual/Hindu beliefs and if her fans care about her as an artist or a person, they need to respect her beliefs. It does not, in my opinion, ruin the album.
If you love Nina, buy this album, it is well worth the import price! If you enjoy artists who are brave, creative, unique and not afraid to tell it like it is, buy this!!!
When something throws me to the ground...........2004-10-11
This record did. I remember vividly listening to the Return of the mother for the first time. The title track threw me to the ground. What a great song full of raw energy and fire. I just like the way she plays with her voice in that song.
Der wind.. another beautiful slow song where Nina sings with a very soft voice...a magical moment. Hang grenade is very lound and delivers a personnal message about aids that you might agree or not...its up to you.
This album has differents styles (different producers ) so it might feels like a different style of music and production from one song to another. It might even feel like its a best of...
But beside that i give this record a 5 stars...any true Nina fan should own this record...
Scattershot but still Great Nina.......2003-11-11
For those of us who are fans,we know what Nina Hagen is capable of,and at times she Delivers.Return promises more highlights than not,yet after a good handful of years one wonders why the album not only has just ten songs, but one of them"He Shiva Shankara" has already been released prior elsewhere, and the least interesting "Hollenzug" appears twice!!
I also feel that the result of using 3-4 diffrent producers on one album emanates a slight lack of continuity of sound and cohesion.
Amidst this subtle irritation lies some great tracks that will definitely fulfill our desire to hear Nina doing what she does best-and this albums mix of themes on Spiritualism,U.F.Os,Prophecy,Conspiracy,and alittle of everything else recalls Ninas earlier and more original efforts.

A fascinating look at a tortured genius.......2002-08-21
Naxos continues to do a wonderful job with its "Life and Works" series. Quite some time ago, we had a Life/Works of Mozart, one of Chopin and then two more, Liszt and Beethoven. he latter are even better packaged than are the earlier sets, with a thick booklet that offers us essays on the historical background, the position of the composer in his time, a look at the major works, a listening plan, recommended readings, personalities, a calendar of the artist's life, a glossary, and a discography. This booklet is worth the price of the set alone.
Now we have two more entries in this amazing series, again written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann: "Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky" (8.558036-39) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 5 min. and "Johann Sebastian Bach" (8.558051-54) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 34 minutes. (Please see my comments on the Bach set on its webpage.)
Was there ever a sadder composer than Tchaikovsky? Siepmann practically introduces us to the child in his cradle and covers his 53 or so years of torment over his music, his sexuality, his impossibly hopeless marriage his strange relationship with Mme von Meck, and above all his music.
To make the recording more vivid, the producers have assigned professional actors the roles of the composer himself (Malcolm Sinclair), the women in his life (Karen Archer and Teresa Gallagher) and the men (Stephen Thorne and David Timson). There are many music examples (drawn, of course, from Naxos recordings), some of them considerably longer than necessary. For example, the "Sugar Plum Fairy" is heard at length to represent all of the "Nutcracker" score when several shorter samplings would have served the purpose better. But this has been true for the entire series, and perhaps the producers will rethink this aspect.

Customer Reviews:
Golden Age Singing.......2001-02-21
In very good live-performance sound, this generous (74 minutes) selection of highlights boasts the finest Carmen cast and conductor I have ever heard in one production. Verrett's is the only performance not duplicated on a commercial set, and she is spectacular--as close to the perfect "Carmen voice" as any I have experienced. Te Kanawa's gorgeous sound is likewise unmatchable, even on her complete recording with the same conductor. Van Dam is perfection, and Domingo even better than one has come to expect. A word about the excerpts: they include all of the big "numbers," as well as enough ensemble work to allow one to fully appreciate the conducting of the great Sir Georg. Considering the modest cost, this disc is unbeatable.
A GREAT PERFORMANCE.......1999-10-29
Verrett is the best Carmen imaginable, Domingo the best Don José, Kiri the best Micaela and Solti it's a grand conductor. The ideal Carmen.

Customer Reviews:
The Best Recording of the King Kong Score.......2001-12-21
I own and have listened to all the recordings of the score to the film King Kong (1933). This is simply the best of them all. Fred Steiner's recording is even superior to Max Steiner's original soundtrack recording. The CD's only shortcoming is that Fred Steiner did not record the entire score. Most of the score is here, and it is magnificent.
A classic score.......2000-03-01
This recording was previously released but I couldn't get it before. That's why I'm glad to know that this magnificent score was re-recorded and is now avilable again. Fred Steiner reconstructed the score and, of course, this is the best recording ever made. Rhino and Ryko seals are trying to offer us old recordings with lots of dialogues... That's a pity.
