This is the studio work of London's prodigious dub godfather, Mad Professor, who takes Massive Attack's Protection album as raw material to create a completely new experience. Bits are added, dropped out, accentuated, run through sonic effects, drenched in reverb, turned inside out until the songs disappear and in their place emerge reborn textural soundscapes. No Protection gives a sort of discursive aural commentary on Protection's original songs, pointing out all the obscured details--the minutest percussive rings and beeps, the most mesmerizing bass loops. --Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars great dub music...plus great album cover art!.......2005-11-19

i might be the only person who has this dub remix album but has never heard the original Massive Attack songs! so, perhaps my feelings on this cd are a bit more free of speculation than the average reviewer...but i love this cd! i'm a fan of dub and i've only got a mild appreciation for Mad Professor's work; but this collection really sees his talents shine and his production values soar to new heights. each cut has a strange sound; stradling old dub ethics with some more modern stylings. the beauty of it is that the warmth of the songs is kept alive and it does not feel like a cold studio effort. well done.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM.......2005-07-13

Anything by Massive Attack and anything by Mad Professor is great by me. I love it all but not by itself, but in a mix with other genres.

2 out of 5 stars D-U-L-L.......2004-04-12

I really enjoy dub, from the old-school Trojan stuff up through Burning Spear, LKJ, etc., and I have a couple Mad Professor CDs. While sometimes overly busy, both have some fun, interesting stuff. I'd heard that "No Protection" bears little resemblance to "Protection." No problem, I thought, it'll be fun to check out what the Mad Professor brings to the project. Inexplicably, he abandons his usual kitchen-sink approach, and what we get here is dishwater-dull. The first few tracks are enjoyable, melllll-ow ear candy. The rest is aural wallpaper. (The last song is an absolute waste of time, but you'll likely be asleep by then.) Buy this only if you're looking for something to crash to.

1 out of 5 stars No Connection.......2004-02-20

"Protection" was Massive Attack`s worst record, but this remix album is even worse, destroying the few interesting moments that the band`s second effort had. Remixer Mad Professor deconstructs the songs and gives them a dub/ reggae-oriented sound, something that`s decent enough during the first two/ three tracks but soon becomes terribly uninspired, repetitive, boring and formulaic.
There are no variations or contrasts in this remixes, the process is always the same and the album seems endless, almost impossible to listen through in one sitting while managing to remain awake. Seriously, this is a major disappointment, and certainly one of the most monotonous, one-dimensional and flat records around.
For fans and completists only.

Massive Attack, after having being (unfair) criticized, after the release of their second Album "Protection", handed over the Original Master Tapes to U.K. Dub Cut-and-paste mastermind "The Mad Professor", who subsequently, took the original source material completely apart, deconstructed, incorporated Dub-reggae sampling and completely Rebuild the album with a much harder (but, Dub-influenced) sound.....(which was what the original "Protection" album was heavily Criticized for lacking).....every track has been completely reworked, to incorporate a thicker more sampled, and Trip-Hop styled sound, Tracks such as the album titled "Protection", "Karmacoma", & "Spying Glass" have had the vocals heavily "Reverbed" & "Distorted" to produce something that is recognisable, yet far removed from the original's Electronica-styled sound, and the surround & resonance move this version into a sound space that the original couldn't possibly hope to occupy, and therefore this makes it a tremendous accompaniment to the original album, rather than a replacement for it....

      3 out of 5 stars A Dub Supplement.......2002-11-06

First of all, the question to be asked is whether one wants to buy this CD as a dub LP or as a supplement to the Massive Attack collection. Lets take the first case. As a dub LP is not bad at all. The original tracks from the PROTECTION LP are enriched with typical tripped out dub sounds, while the singing is downgraded to the second place. In some cases one gets only a glimpse of the lyrics, in short echoing portions. This is not a very ambient dub LP though, it gets difficult to listen at some points if one is not used to hardcore dub. And here comes the second case. Massive Attack funs who might think that through this CD they can enhance their enjoyment of the PROTECTION LP, are wrong. Although the basis is the same, nothing else is. The dub background Massive are using in some of their tracks, is reinforced, twisted and roughed up. No making-love-music in this one, just smokey living rooms, full of silent, head-nodding people and ripped up packs of cigarettes on the floor. If you want to get this CD, do it for the right reasons.

        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful album.......2006-10-05

Nothing's Gonna Stop us now. Sums up the whole album. It's bright, well played, well sung and from the heart. Its a perfect blend of 80s pop and rock...look no further than the 80s for good music.
Beat Control- Very upbeat though too 'poppy' for this album.
Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now- its lyrics are so uplifting. A great anthem; be proud to like it!
It's Not Over (Till Its Over)- rock and almost aggressively sung to get the point across. Great!
Girls Like You- The most rockest of the lot. The lyrics are interesting too.
Wings Of A lie- A very bittersweet ballad. All about doubt as to how the other feels "Someone cares just a little bit more"
The Children- Another uplifting Starship anthem
I Don't know Why- A rather intense but happy ballad from Grace Slick. Can't go wrong.
Transalantic- This sounds like it could of been a hit. Its very rocky and pashionately sung...all about really missing someone and what to do about it!
Say When- This is the best song on the album. Its A ballad and one of the most beautiful songs ever in my opinion. A love song and the lyrics are sensational and its sung with such honesty-it seems to be mysteriously calling to a girl to return to him.
Babylon-Its is well sung by Grace Slick but whats it really about?!
Set The Night To Music- This ones very relaxing to listen to.

This album is so underated. So get it!

        2 out of 5 stars Average.......2006-06-19

I liked the rollicking It's Not Over (Til It's Over), though it's surprising that it was a hit in 1987. If it was performed today, it'd be perfect background music on Dr. Phil's talk show or Anthony Robbins' motivational tapes and DVDs. It has a strong message to it about standing up for yourself. The rest of the album fails to match up to this song. It's mostly paint-by-numbers corporate '80s rock that would have sounded better on Journey's albums. The bombastic guitars, the over-the-top sounds and the unimaginative songwriting are mediocre at best. Think of this, drive while listening to this CD during 112 miles I-95 in Georgia south of Savannah, and you'd forget about most of it one hour later! That's just how average and flat it is. No matter how many jokes people make about the 80s, the clothes, the big, long hair the fashions, the neon lights, they can also comment on how lousy this Starship album sounded. It wasn't their best music either!

        1 out of 5 stars Pointless.......2004-05-27

As someone who'd been a fan of the band since the Jefferson Airplane days, this album is the biggest piece of crap ever. The music is weak, soulless, pointless, and not even a pale shadow of what the band had once been. The only reason I bought this in the first place was to keep the collection complete and for Grace's two songs, which luckily are good, especially "I Don't Know Why" which I really like a lot. Grace's writing contributions are the only thing that earned this album a single star.

The problem with the Starship albums is that they're comprised almost exclusively of material written by outside writers. I don't have much time for artists that only perform other people's material. The exception here is "Transaltantic", written by Mickey and Craig. Decent song; its defintely my favourite following Grace's 2 contributions.

That's not to say that all of the non-band material was bad (I did really like "Love Rusts" on HOOPLA), its just that a performer that can't write their own material isn't much of an "artist" to me. And when you compare the stuff on these albums with the bulk of accomplishment from the Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship eras, it simply doesn't compare very favourably.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Mickey Thomas Era.......2003-10-13

Starship is a long-careered band with its history dates back as far as 60s. Right after Nuclear Furniture album in 1984 Paul Kantner one of the original members left the band with the ownership of half of the former band's name "Jefferson". Since then their music direction turned toward more catchy pop rock as seen in Knee Deep In A Hoopla sounding similar to Heart(1984) or Survivor's Vital Signs(1984) with Mickey Thomas participating as background vocal. This album also invites finest songwiters at that time including Diane Warren, known for Heart or Michael Bolton works, penning "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now", #1 hit from Mannequin soundtrack. Comparing with ...Hoopla, the sound became much edgier and closer to Survivor yet with pop-beat rhythm which makes the song memorable. Beat Patrol is a nice example of beat-pop. Ballads are super equipped with nothing's-gonna-stop-them combination of Mickey Thomas, high-toned emotional male vocalist and Grace Slick, one of the finest female rock vocalists ever born. Particularly I love Set The Night To Music nice slow ballad. Minor, less impressive tracks are fine as well such as Transatlantic. Overall this is the best they can get so far and unmissable.

Essential for Vital Signs and Heart(1984) appreciators. Good news for Starship fans is that Mickey Thomas will be back with his brand-new solo album.

4 out of 5 stars ANOTHER CHAPTER IN THEIR GLORIOUS HISTORY!!!.......2002-07-25

Fresh off the success of KNEE DEEP IN THE HOOPLA in 1985/86, STARSHIP released NO PROTECTION in 1987. It was a logical step for the band, as they dug deeper into the slick synth pop of the previous effort. The album opens with a corny but catchy number titled BEAT PATROL. This song's accompanying video managed some airplay on MTV but the song never really took off! Next in line was the HUGE #1 hit, NOTHING'S GONNA STOP US NOW! This song was already a hit when this album was released, so obviously it helped to propel the album to platinum status. Sadly, it would be their last million selling album and GRACE SLICK'S last album with Starship. The songs that follow, are a mix of techno type rockers and ballads, with the standout tracks being, IT'S NOT OVER TIL IT'S OVER(another big hit and an ironic title), GIRLS LIKE YOU and WINGS OF A LIE! The album comes across almost sounding like a gospel rock album, especially THE CHILDREN(another standout)! As usual, there is some tasty but restrained guitar playing from CRAIG CHAQUICO, a possible sign that he would be the next to jump ship! Of all the incarnations of the band, this version takes the most heat for digging into more commercial viable material but truthfully they represented the 80's just as well as they did the 60's and 70's, so PAUL and GRACE should get off their high horse and stop blaming MICKEY THOMAS for going in this direction! They coaxed him into the band anyway, at least PAUL did! Well, hence the title NO PROTECTION...from the crazy things that go on in this business and other people's minds! Anyway, the album is worth checking out, if only for the hits!!!
